Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang Jan 2010

Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Let µ(?(1)) denote the enveloping algebra of the two-dimensional nonabelian Lie algebra ?(1) over a base field K. We study the maximal abelian ad-nilpotent (mad) associative subalgebras and finite-dimensional Lie subalgebras of µ(?(1)). We first prove that the set of noncentral elements of µ(?(1)) admits the Dixmier partition, µ(?(1))?K=? 5i=1 ?i, and establish characterization theorems for elements in ?i, i=1,3,4. Then we determine the elements in ?i, i=1,3, and describe the eigenvalues for the inner derivation ad Bx,x??i, i=3,4. We also derive other useful results for elements in ?i, i=2,3,4,5. As an application, we find all framed mad subalgebras of …

Not Everything In Its Path Confusion And Coping On The Bolivar Penninsula After Hurricane Ike, Mary Barnes Jan 2010

Not Everything In Its Path Confusion And Coping On The Bolivar Penninsula After Hurricane Ike, Mary Barnes

Theses & ETDs

This is an ethnographic study of the social effects of Hurricane Ike (2008) on Gilchrist and Crystal Beach, two communities on the Bolivar Peninsula, a strip of land near Galveston, TX. Using community members experiences, I examine the ways in which their recovery efforts were complicated by disputes with insurance agencies and engagement with the media. I then discuss some of the coping mechanisms that residents employed, including reestablishing community groups, using online communication tools, comparing Hurricane Ike to the Hurricane Katrina, verbally affirming their resilience, and reflecting on the importance of place and material belongings. I found that, nine …

Heidegger’S Notion Of Religion: The Limits Of Being-Understanding, Angus Brook Jan 2010

Heidegger’S Notion Of Religion: The Limits Of Being-Understanding, Angus Brook

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

In the last two decades, the question of religion has become a central concern of many philosophers belonging to the Continental philosophical tradition. As the interest in religion has grown within Continental philosophy, so also has the question of Martin Heidegger’s relationship with religion. This paper poses the question of what religion meant to Martin Heidegger in the development of phenomenology as ontology; how he preconceived the notion of religion and why he eventually denied any authenticity to religion. In engaging with this question, the paper will also attempt to disclose some delimitations of Heidegger’s approach to religion.

The Invention Of Creativity: The Emergence Of A Discourse, Camilla Nelson Jan 2010

The Invention Of Creativity: The Emergence Of A Discourse, Camilla Nelson

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Creativity is increasingly cited as the key to social and economic change in the 21st century. It is also a very modern concept — making its first appearance as an English noun in 1875. This paper investigates the cultural construction of creativity in the context of the history of ideas. It understands creativity not as a given human attribute or ability, but as an idea that emerges out of specific historical moments, shaped by the discourses of politics, science, commerce, and nation. It shifts the ground of analysis away from the naturalised models that have traditionally dominated the field of …

The Development And Validation Of The Intercultural Effectiveness Scale, Tamra Portalla, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The present study developed and assessed reliability and validity of a new instrument, the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale (IES). Based on a review of the literature, 76 items important for intercultural effectiveness were generated. A total of 653 college students rated these items in two separate stages and generated a 20-item final version of the instrument which contains six factors. An assessment of concurrent and predictive validity from 246 participants in the final stage indicates that the IES was significantly correlated with other related scales. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed as well.

To Whom Was Christ A Slave (Phil 2:7)? Double Agency And The Specters Of Sin And Death In Philippians, Nijay Gupta Jan 2010

To Whom Was Christ A Slave (Phil 2:7)? Double Agency And The Specters Of Sin And Death In Philippians, Nijay Gupta

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Paul’s so-called “Christ-hymn” in Philippians 2:6-11 is one of the most scrutinized passages in the Pauline corpus as questions abound regarding its origins, purpose, format, and the theological components of its Christology. One factor in the determination of this Christology is the interpretation of doulos in 2:7 focusing on the question to whom was Christ a slave? While a number of answers have been put forward, it will be argued that the best explanation involves “double agency.” That is, when the hymn is closely examined, as well as the theological character of the whole letter, Christ appears to be a …

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

When Joan Digby first proposed taking collegiate honors students into our national parks, I jumped at the chance. Within minutes of reading her email, I not only responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!” but went so far as to volunteer the resources of the Southern Utah University Honors Program to get things started. Nestled among 5 national parks in southwestern Utah, I felt our campus would be a natural focal point for the kind of program Joan envisioned. Within weeks we had laid the groundwork for a proof-of-concept pilot project at nearby Bryce Canyon National Park. Little did I know at …

Representing Rwanda Anthropology's Role In Witnessing Genocide, Kaitlyn Collins Jan 2010

Representing Rwanda Anthropology's Role In Witnessing Genocide, Kaitlyn Collins

Theses & ETDs

The academic scholarship available on genocide is limited. Alexander Hinton is one of the few anthropologists who has written extensively about genocide; his writing explores the roles that anthropology can play with respect to genocide from both a preventative and a prescriptive perspective. Using Hintons work as a foundation, this thesis will explore the role that anthropologists can play in preventing genocide, investigating the connections between everyday practices of violence and more extreme derivatives of violence. I will focus my lens on the Rwandan genocide, using this as a template to evaluate anthropologys place in the study of genocide due …

Recovering The Temple Mount The Politics Of Place, Memory And Identity, Britney Summit-Gil Jan 2010

Recovering The Temple Mount The Politics Of Place, Memory And Identity, Britney Summit-Gil

Theses & ETDs

The Temple Mount/Haram es-Sharif has been a center of religious worship and political turmoil for millennia. It is the site of an important Islamic shrine and mosque, and the Western Wallthe holiest site in Judaism. Jewish tradition marks it as the site of Solomons Temple, Herods Temple, and the Third Temple of the Messianic Age. The following explores the Temple Mount through Jewish literature and Israeli archaeology to understand why, in recent years, the site has drawn national and global attention. The survey is framed in the context of social memory and identity to understand the role the Temple Mount …

Nomadic Pastoralism In Mongolia's Age Of The Market, James William Birmingham Jan 2010

Nomadic Pastoralism In Mongolia's Age Of The Market, James William Birmingham

Theses & ETDs

The pastoralists of Mongolia have recently gone through a dramatic shift in their economy and government one arguably even more challenging to their traditional subsistence economy than the Soviet era that preceded it. Mongolian nomadic pastoralism is now dealing with global capitalism. This thesis will analyze this transitions effect on the nomadic pastoralists of Mongolia. It will focus on the tension between the traditional methods of the pastoralists and the capitalist policies that are being employed in modern Mongolia.

Fresh From The Grove Ethnographic Research In Florida's Citrus Industry, Miranda Rosalynne Bailey Jan 2010

Fresh From The Grove Ethnographic Research In Florida's Citrus Industry, Miranda Rosalynne Bailey

Theses & ETDs

From groves to laboratories to gift shops, citrus is a commodity and cultural symbol that has become representative of Florida across the globe. In this thesis I discuss the changing role of citrus as a Florida industry and, through interviews with growers and others agriculture professionals, I investigate what these changes mean for future generations. A cycle of economic slumps and industry consolidation has combined with disease pressure and environmental threats to wreak havoc on the productive acreage of citrus in Florida. The future of citrus in Florida, with its family-owned heritage, is unclear.

Moving Upstream Domestic Violence Prevention Initiatives In A Community-Based Advocacy Organization, Myranda Pierce Jan 2010

Moving Upstream Domestic Violence Prevention Initiatives In A Community-Based Advocacy Organization, Myranda Pierce

Theses & ETDs

The focus of this thesis is community education and engagement in the context of domestic and sexual violence prevention at SPARCC (Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center in Sarasota, Florida). This research takes the form of unstructured interviews and participant observation learning alongside educators and leaders in the Sarasota area who teach various groups in the community about domestic and sexual violence issues. Specifically, I discuss various strategies and goals of primary prevention and observe how projects and outreach events put on by the prevention team fit into these goals. I also look at the needs and limitations of the …

Play It By Ear Towards A Definition Of Audio Documentary, Anna O. Hamilton Jan 2010

Play It By Ear Towards A Definition Of Audio Documentary, Anna O. Hamilton

Theses & ETDs

The ambiguous nature of the contemporary audio documentary has been noted by scholars and audio producers alike, who tend to borrow terminology from, and employ conventions of, other expressive forms when discussing and conceptualizing the genre. This thesis will provide an understanding of early experimental approaches to broadcast journalism as well as creative uses of the radio medium. Such aesthetic techniques allowed exploration of the possibilities for the documentary narrator, methods of remixing sonic elements, and oral historical purposes for the genre. Analogies drawn between contemporary audio documentary and resources of drama and lyric poetry will prove especially invaluable for …

Through the use of participant observation and interviews with both members of the Orange Blossom Community Garden and people from the surrounding area, I look at issues of access in regards to community garden space. I explore the physical as well as metaphorical relationships between the garden space and social practices and systems. Through examining community gardens as sites where people have a hand in shaping public space, constructing place out …

Sacred Pathways The Importance Of Caves In Maya Ritual And Ideology, Karin Camila Boynton Jan 2010

Sacred Pathways The Importance Of Caves In Maya Ritual And Ideology, Karin Camila Boynton

Theses & ETDs

In the Maya tradition, caves are considered important parts of the sacred landscape. Mayan art and literature often depict caves as the portals between the human realm and the Underworld. Remains of religious rituals in caves have been recovered from sites all across Mesoamerica, pointing to a possible cave complex that extends as far back as the Preclassic Olmec (1200-400 BC). In this thesis, I will use Naj Tunich a remote cave in the Guatemalan Petn as a case study to illustrate the importance of caves in Maya ritual and ideology. Naj Tunich and the artwork found within …

Tibetan Buddhist Autobiography 18th Century To Present, Theresa Sellers Jan 2010

Tibetan Buddhist Autobiography 18th Century To Present, Theresa Sellers

Theses & ETDs

The tremendous literary heritage of Tibetan Buddhist culture contains a number of autobiographical works known as rangnam, or liberation stories, written as early as the eleventh century. In a style unique to Tibet, accomplished Buddhist masters would give accounts of their outer, inner, and secret lives on the path to enlightenment, negotiating Buddhist ideals with the lived realities of Tibetan society via the written medium. This thesis will explore the genre of rangnam, examining selected works of Tibetan Buddhists from the 18th through 20th centuries. Looking at how historically situated individuals lived and wrote in a traditional framework that also …

In The Company Of Detective Ladies Gendered Modes Of Detection In The Works Of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, And Alexander Mccall, Alexandra Alden Charles Jan 2010

In The Company Of Detective Ladies Gendered Modes Of Detection In The Works Of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, And Alexander Mccall, Alexandra Alden Charles

Theses & ETDs

The rational male detective, exemplified in Sir Arthur Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes, is frequently portrayed as a socially unfixed, unemotional, loner figure. He protects, but is divorced from domestic realm. Because female characters cannot disengage from their domestic identity in the same way in which male characters can, female detectives have to incorporate two seemingly conflicting identities. In order to negotiate the issues that result from their gendernamely, assumed differences both in types of knowledge, and in the construction of personal and professional identitiesfemale detectives employ different modes of detection. Miss Marple, Agatha Christies spinster detective, gleans information from town …

People Helping People Community, Identity, Memory, And Place At The Senior Friendship Center, Loren Mora Jan 2010

People Helping People Community, Identity, Memory, And Place At The Senior Friendship Center, Loren Mora

Theses & ETDs

This thesis provides an ethnographic case study of the Senior Friendship Center (SFC) in Sarasota, FL. Within an American cultural context of aging, I will explore how Reminiscence and ritual work together to construct identity, community, and home. Relying on Myerhoff, I discuss how Reminiscence and ritual turn space into place by infusing it with memory and meaning on the individual and collective level. These constructions result in the formation of elder-friendly places necessary for successful aging.

Effect Of Props On Preschool Children's Communicative Interactions In Scripted Play Events, Gabrielle Yvonne Defiebre Jan 2010

Effect Of Props On Preschool Children's Communicative Interactions In Scripted Play Events, Gabrielle Yvonne Defiebre

Theses & ETDs

The current literature review and research proposal investigated the role of props in preschool childrens communicative exchanges during scripted play. It has been shown that several factors influence the physical environment that children are exposed to, and that the physical environment (including toys) influences how children play and communicate. The proposed study would try to explicate the role of abstract or realistic props during scripted play interactions. A total of sixty-four preschool children (thirty-two boys, thirty-two girls) between the ages of four and five would participate in this study. Preschool children would play with a same-sex peer and would be …

Ain't Nothin' To It But To Do It Collaboration And Reflexivity In Experimental Performance, Caitlin Mcmullen, Christina Martin Jan 2010

Ain't Nothin' To It But To Do It Collaboration And Reflexivity In Experimental Performance, Caitlin Mcmullen, Christina Martin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is the written component of a performance project co-conducted over the 2009-2010 academic year. This project was comprised of fall workshop rehearsals, composition of set pieces in January, and a final performance event. Working collaboratively with an ensemble of students, we structured improvisational games and created a distinct compositional vocabulary based on these games. We composed pieces individually as directors for a final performance, which took place on Sunday, January 31st, 2010. We did not begin this project with a specific end product in mind. This process was highly reflexive; we allowed the experience of rehearsals to guide …
