Class Competition And American Health Care: Debating The State Children’S Health Insurance Program, Janet L. Dolgin Apr 2010

Class Competition And American Health Care: Debating The State Children’S Health Insurance Program, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The Article begins in Part II with a summary of the nation's failure, over nearly eight decades of trying, to create a health care system providing broad access to care. It then reviews several political and economic explanations for that failure. Next, Part II describes disparities in health and in health care in the United States as compared with other nations.

Parts III provides background information. It describes the SCHIP program and unsuccessful efforts in 2007 and 2008 to renew and expand the program. The story of these efforts illustrates the Article's central claim—that implicit class competition played a significant …

Normative And Legal Pluralism: A Global Perspective, William Twining Apr 2010

Normative And Legal Pluralism: A Global Perspective, William Twining

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

This lecture sets out to demystify the topic of legal pluralism by examining the relationship between legal pluralism, normative pluralism, and general normative theory from a global perspective. The central theme is that treating legal pluralism as a species of normative pluralism decenters the state, links legal pluralism to a rich body of literature, and helps to show that some of the central puzzlements surrounding the topic can usefully be viewed as much broader issues in the general theory of norms and legal theory. A second theme is that so-called “global legal pluralism” is in several respects qualitatively different from …

Impact Of Globalization On Socio-Economic And Political Development Of The Central Asian Countries, Karina Orozalieva Apr 2010

Impact Of Globalization On Socio-Economic And Political Development Of The Central Asian Countries, Karina Orozalieva

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main objective of this thesis is to understand the economic, social and political impacts of globalization on the Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Central Asian countries in general. The empirical studies based on panel data analyses and the case study on Kyrgyzstan demonstrate that the socio-economic effect of globalization on development of these countries is twofold. On the one hand benefits produced by globalization such as migration and remittances can be useful for economic development in the short run. They take a role of a "shock absorber" of the challenges that are associated with transition to a free market economy. On …

Associate Degree Nursing Students' Thoughts, Feelings, And Experiences Of Short Study Abroad In A Low-Income Country, Cynthia Foronda Apr 2010

Associate Degree Nursing Students' Thoughts, Feelings, And Experiences Of Short Study Abroad In A Low-Income Country, Cynthia Foronda

Dissertations (1934 -)

Associate Degree Nursing students are rarely offered opportunities to study abroad. Educational research about nursing students studying abroad is limited but suggests positive outcomes. Prior research has focused on graduate or baccalaureate students in developed and less developed countries, thus, the experience of studying abroad in a low-income country for the associate degree student is unknown. The purpose of this study was to describe the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of associate degree nursing students who participated in a short study abroad course in a low-income country. Ten students participated in phone interviews to share narratives two to six weeks following …

A Christian Augustinian Response To The Problem Of Evil In The Shinto Religion With Reference To The Thought Of Motoori Norinaga, Delia Ursulescu Apr 2010

A Christian Augustinian Response To The Problem Of Evil In The Shinto Religion With Reference To The Thought Of Motoori Norinaga, Delia Ursulescu

Masters Theses

Despite great advances within the last few decades of Western scholarship concerning the indigenous Japanese religion, little has been written on the Shinto concept of evil. Given the overall optimistic Shinto attitude toward life, the purpose of this thesis was to analyze its view of evil with reference to Motoori Norinaga's thought in order to find out whether Shinto understands it in a realistic manner. Another aim was to compare Norinaga's position to a Christian Augustinian view to determine which one offers a more coherent and comprehensive answer to the challenge of evil. The thesis examined Norinaga's available writings and …

Rao's Quadratic Entropy And Some New Applications, Yueqin Zhao Apr 2010

Rao's Quadratic Entropy And Some New Applications, Yueqin Zhao

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Many problems in statistical inference are formulated as testing the diversity of populations. The entropy functions measure the similarity of a distribution function to the uniform distribution and hence can be used as a measure of diversity. Rao (1982a) proposed the concept of quadratic entropy. Its concavity property makes the decomposition similar to ANOVA for categorical data feasible. In this thesis, after reviewing the properties and providing a modification to quadratic entropy, various applications of quadratic entropy are explored. First, analysis of quadratic entropy with the suggested modification to analyze the contingency table data is explored. Then its application to …

When Jesus Was A Girl: Polymythic Female Christ Figures In Whale Rider And Steel Magnolias, David Fillingim Apr 2010

When Jesus Was A Girl: Polymythic Female Christ Figures In Whale Rider And Steel Magnolias, David Fillingim

Journal of Religion & Film

Partially in response to Anton Karl Kozlovic’s call for research to refine the concept of the cinematic Christ-figure, this article examines Whale Rider and Steel Magnolias as Christ-figure narratives with the intention that the Christ-figure interpretation sheds light on the meaning and significance of the films, and that the two films’ young, female lead characters can illuminate the Christ-figure concept. Both films are polymythic Christ-figure narratives in that Christ-figure characteristics are present alongside elements from or allusions to other spiritual and mythological traditions. Both films also convey feminist sensitivities. The relationship between the films’ polymythic elements and feminist messages suggests …

Man’S Desire Exceeds His Grasp – The Prestige As Utopia, Daniel Cojocaru Apr 2010

Man’S Desire Exceeds His Grasp – The Prestige As Utopia, Daniel Cojocaru

Journal of Religion & Film

This essay introduces the Girardian model of conflictive imitation to explain the rivalry between the two main protagonists of The Prestige, Alfred Borden and Robert Angier. Furthermore it will be argued that the protagonists are representatives of two schools of utopian thought. Finally, boundless desire resulting from conflictive imitation can be seen as the reason for the failure of Angier’s pursuit of scientific utopia that consequently becomes a dystopian reality.

Book Review: Spirited Encounters: American Indians Protest Museum Policies And Practices By Karen Coody Cooper, Majel Boxer Apr 2010

Book Review: Spirited Encounters: American Indians Protest Museum Policies And Practices By Karen Coody Cooper, Majel Boxer

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In recent years a number of related academic fields have explored the connections between museums and Indigenous peoples. The growth in published monographs and edited volumes has in part been spurred on by the 2004 opening of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. This monograph raises significant questions and reveals numerous debates surrounding such issues as ownership and access to museum collections and archives; the repatriation of human remains, funerary items, and cultural patrimony; Native American traditional and modern art and art museums; the need for consultation and collaboration with Indigenous peoples and communities; and the …

Book Review: Silent Victims: Hate Crimes Against Native Americans By Barbara Perry, Beth R. Ritter Apr 2010

Book Review: Silent Victims: Hate Crimes Against Native Americans By Barbara Perry, Beth R. Ritter

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Anyone familiar with Indian Country and the endemic racism and discrimination—on and off the reservations—that persist for Native Americans in the United States might assume that hate crimes perpetuated against this population are not only common but also well documented. As Barbara Perry provocatively establishes, only the former is true: Native Americans are subjected routinely to ethnoviolence, yet they rarely report these transgressions. In fact, according to Perry, Native Americans reported only 83 incidences of hate crimes in 2004 (< 1% of all reported hate crimes that year).

Perry explores several explanations for this apparent anomaly, including traditional Native cultural values of nonconfrontation. Her thesis, however, focuses primarily …

Book Review: Skeletal Biology And Bioarchaeology Of The Northwestern Plains Edited By George W. Gill And Rick L. Weathermon, W. Raymond Wood

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume is a capstone of George W. Gill’s long and productive (and continuing) career at the University of Wyoming, where he has spent the last three and a half decades teaching and in pursuit of the data encapsulated here. Contributions from 21 scholars, most of them his students, present studies of bioarchaeology and skeletal biology, especially in the fields of demography, pathology, and morphology. The 19 chapters (and the introductory comments by William M. Bass, Douglas H. Ubelaker, and the senior editor) cover 10,000 years on the Northwestern Plains, from the Archaic period to historic times, encompassing studies of …

Forever Changed: The Transformation Of Rural America Through Immigration, Maha N. Younes Ph.D., Elizabeth A. Killip Apr 2010

Forever Changed: The Transformation Of Rural America Through Immigration, Maha N. Younes Ph.D., Elizabeth A. Killip

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

This qualitative case study reveals the impact of immigration on one rural Midwestern community and its longtime residents. The 123 phone interviews and sessions conducted with two focus groups provide compelling insights into residents’ perceptions of immigration and immigrants as well as their ensuing personal and collective struggle with and adaptation to an immigration process that forever changed the community. The residents offer prudent insights for policy makers, immigrants, and other communities facing similar challenges. While the focus of the study is on the macro conversion of the community through the eyes of its residents, the author stresses the need …

Review Of William Wayne Red Hat, Jr.: Cheyenne Keeper Of The Arrows By William Wayne Red Hat, Jr., Christina Gish Hall Apr 2010

Review Of William Wayne Red Hat, Jr.: Cheyenne Keeper Of The Arrows By William Wayne Red Hat, Jr., Christina Gish Hall

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In an attempt to add a Cheyenne voice to the voluminous literature published about this Great Plains Indian nation, Sibylle M. Schlesier has come together with William Wayne Red Hat, Jr. to produce a text that transcribes this Cheyenne Arrow Keeper's multiple personal narratives, ranging in topics from his experiences in Vietnam to his religious role in his community to ruminations on Cheyenne history, culture, and oral tradition. As the daughter of anthropologist Karl Schlesier, Schlesier was in a unique position to collaborate with Red Hat, Jr., having known the Red Hat family from childhood. Since Red Hat, Jr. was …

Holiday Home, Sweet Home: A Phenomenological Approach To Second Home Living In Ireland, Deirdre N. Quinn Apr 2010

Holiday Home, Sweet Home: A Phenomenological Approach To Second Home Living In Ireland, Deirdre N. Quinn

Doctoral

This study constructs a phenomenological account of the second home living experience in Ireland, exploring the interactions between the everyday home life and the holiday home life of the second home owner. It is contextualized by a critical review of the relevant literatures on post-modernism, cosmopolitanism, home and second home living. The thesis utilises a package of participant-centred qualitative methodologies (including in-depth interviews, audio diaries and participants’ photographs) in order to produce a fine-grained insight into their experiences of second home living.

The fieldwork consists of two phases, the first based on in-depth interviews with second home owners and the …

Standardized American Indians: The “Names Of Indian Tribes And Bands” List From The Office Of Indian Affairs, Charles D. Bernholz Apr 2010

Standardized American Indians: The “Names Of Indian Tribes And Bands” List From The Office Of Indian Affairs, Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The inconsistent spelling of American Indian tribal names at the end of the nineteenth century led in part to the development within the Office of Indian Affairs of an array of 270 standardized identifiers, ranging from Absaroka to Zuñi. These efforts paralleled the simultaneous improvement of a large suite of relevant terms by the United States Board on Geographic Names. Both compilations were included in style manuals published by the Government Printing Office beginning in 1900 and approved for the use of federal agencies. In 1903 and 1904, Charles J. Kappler, in the preparation of his multi-volume Indian Affairs: Laws …
