Perimeters Of Democracy, Heather Fryer
Perimeters Of Democracy, Heather Fryer
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
During times of conflict, Americans have worried that enemies within would twist freedom of speech into a weapon of propaganda and use freedom of assembly to unleash violent internal chaos. As a result, the government isolated and confined within federal communities groups that they deemed dangerous. Within these so-called cultural structures of realistic democracy, the government awkwardly attempted to protect citizens while curbing their rights and freedoms. It is no accident that the government’s enclosed worlds were most numerous in the American West, where abundant open space has long symbolized the glory of American freedom and progress. Heather Fryer looks …
Editing Eden, Frank Hutchins, Patrick C. Wilson
Editing Eden, Frank Hutchins, Patrick C. Wilson
University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters
Recent scholarship on the Amazon has challenged depictions of the region that emphasize its natural exuberance or represent its residents as historically isolated peoples stoically resisting challenges from powerful global forces. The contributors to this volume follow this lead by situating the discussion of the Amazon and its inhabitants at the intersections of identity politics, debates about socioeconomic sovereignty, and processes of place making. Editing Eden focuses on case studies from Amazonian Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador regarding the themes of indigeneity, community making, development politics, and the transcendence of indigenous/nonindigenous divides. Portraits of the Amazon emerge through an analysis of …
Student Nutrition And Academic Achievement, Lindsey M. Dodsworth
Student Nutrition And Academic Achievement, Lindsey M. Dodsworth
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
Proper nutrition that abides by United States Dietary Guidelines is critical in the cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical functioning of students. Food and drink choices that students make are heavily based on their preferences and what is available to them. Students who consume balanced, nutrient dense food and drink perform better in areas of participation, behavior, attendance and get their assigned tasks done more completely than students who do not eat well. Young people of today will be functioning members of society in the future so equipping them with proper education and skills for success is a critical role that …

Librarian As Professor: A Dynamic New Role Model, Martha Fallahay Loesch
Librarian As Professor: A Dynamic New Role Model, Martha Fallahay Loesch
Library Publications
The 20th century information explosion provided widespread technological innovation and ease of access to information, and due to the 21st century emphasis on digital collections and electronic resources, libraries around the world are facing an uncertain future. This naturally causes librarians to re-evaluate their professional role, but perhaps academic librarians are best prepared for the future due to their co-existing role as professors. Essentially they have always been teaching, but now they must conquer the disparaging image and status treatment to which they have been subjected and evolve their profession by joining their teaching faculty colleagues in classrooms on college …

The Engaged Humanities: Principles And Practices Of Public Scholarship And Teaching, Gregory Jay
The Engaged Humanities: Principles And Practices Of Public Scholarship And Teaching, Gregory Jay
Imagining America
Will public scholarship and community engagement become central to revitalizing the humanities in the 21st century? Efforts to connect humanities research and teaching with projects to advance democracy, social justice, and the public good might take advantage of the latest episode of crisis, and even argue that they represent a strong new direction for revival. After a brief review of how definitions of the humanities have changed since the 1960s, the essay contends that the future of the humanities depends upon two interrelated innovations: the organized implementation of projectbased engaged learning and scholarship, on the one hand, and the continued …

Academic Integrity Office: A Proposal, Brian Stewart, Charles Faires
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
In higher education, the topic of plagiarism and the issues surrounding this topic are ever present. However, the larger umbrella issue of academic integrity, of which plagiarism is encompassed, is not present. To formally address the larger umbrella issue, the School of Education (SOE) at a private nonprofit University, located in the Southeastern United States, proposed the creation of an Academic Integrity Office. This paper provides background information related to academic integrity gathered from the SOE, a review of literature, summarized data collected from faculty members of the SOE, and a proposal. Sections of this paper are based upon a …

Alleging parallels between Scripture and other ancient Near Eastern texts has always been a matter of controversy. The controversy has resulted from criticism of the comparative method by those who accuse its users of being overly simplistic or reckless when applying their particular approaches to the texts. This recklessness has resulted in alleged connections that are now considered very loose, unjustified, and harmful to the context of Scripture. In order to avoid the dreaded "parallelomania" that has resulted from hasty conclusions in comparative studies, it is necessary to approach alleged comparative units in a more concrete fashion, synthesizing the best …

Review Of Anthology Of New Perspectives Edited By John R. Wunder And Kurt E. Kinbacher, Clara Sue Kidwell
Review Of Anthology Of New Perspectives Edited By John R. Wunder And Kurt E. Kinbacher, Clara Sue Kidwell
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This book grew out of the ninth biennial Maple Leaf and Eagle Conference on North American Studies hosted by the Renvall Institute at the University of Helsinki in 2002. It thus includes significant coverage of Canadian as well as American Indian history and several comparative studies of Canadian and American tribes. It is also wide ranging in terms of disciplines, including historical, anthropological, and literary studies.
Of the volume's seventeen articles, nine are authored by scholars either trained in or currently teaching at Finnish and Canadian institutions, thereby contributing an international flavor to the collection. The complexities of Metis identity …

Book Review: Thunder And Herds: Rock Art Of The High Plains By Lawrence L. Loendorf, Linea Sundstrom
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Archaeology is often described as detective work. In this detailed exploration of the High Plains of Colorado and New Mexico, archaeologist Lawrence Loendorf proves as adept as Sherlock Holmes in bringing diverse and often surprising clues to bear on understanding the who, when, where, and why of ancient rock carvings and paintings. From climate change to cultural migrations to landscape, Loendorf carefully reconstructs the contexts, cultural and physical, in which long-ago and not-so-long-ago American Indians created this complex array of images.
The twin joys of archaeology are discovery and the challenge of filling in missing pieces of history. The former …

Book Review: One Hundred Summers: A Kiowa Calendar Record By Candace S. Greene, Phillip Earenfight
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
In One Hundred Summers, Candace Greene examines a recently discovered bundle of heavily worn Kiowa calendar drawings by one of the great Kiowa calendar keepers, Silver Horn, now in the collections of the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History (SNOMNH). The loose drawings, once bound in a ledger book, document events from 1828 to 1929, a period that brought unprecedented change to the Kiowas.
Greene opens her study with an introduction to the Kiowa calendar tradition, followed by two shorter chapters dealing specifically with Silver Horn’s calendar at the SNOMNH. Chapter 4 presents the 64 surviving sheets that …
Book Review: Kiowa Ethnogeography By William C. Meadows, Michael P. Jordan
Book Review: Kiowa Ethnogeography By William C. Meadows, Michael P. Jordan
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
With his latest book Meadows has made a significant contribution to our understanding of Native American ethnogeography. Comprehensive in scope, the work addresses the Kiowa people’s evolving relationship to the land from their initial migration from the headwaters of the Yellowstone River to contemporary life in rural southwestern Oklahoma. Meadows demonstrates that the Kiowa people have maintained a sense of homeland throughout two episodes of migration, confinement to a reservation, and the allotment of tribal lands in 1901. After providing a useful overview of research on Native American ethnogeography, he delves into a discussion of Kiowa interactions with the environment …

Book Review: Lipset’S Agrarian Socialism: A Re-Examination Edited By David E. Smith, Jim Mochoruk
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Seymour Martin Lipset, rather famously associated with the concept of “American Exceptionalism” and renowned as one of the leading practitioners of political sociology in the United States, was better known in Canada for works that seemed to make little, if any, impression upon U.S. readers. First and foremost was his landmark study of the social democratic Co-operative Commonwealth Federation’s (CCF) rise to political power in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan—Agrarian Socialism. It is the stuff of legend in Canadian academic circles how a young PhD student—a Jewish leftist from New York no less—came to Saskatchewan in the mid …
