Understanding The Rapid Rise Of Charismatic Christianity In Southeast Asia, Knowledge@Smu May 2010

Understanding The Rapid Rise Of Charismatic Christianity In Southeast Asia, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

There seems to be something about speaking in tongues, prophesy, sing-a-longs and loud music bands that augurs well with the well-heeled, educated, middle-class, ethnic Chinese Southeast Asian. Juliette Koning, a visiting professor at SMU, and her colleague first took notice of this as they were conducting research in the region; of how urban and upwardly mobile ethnic Chinese communities seemed to be drawn to this particular brand of Christian worship. An in-depth study that followed confirmed their observations. What's more, they found that while church attendances all across Asia have been expanding rapidly, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia are said to …

The Transformation Of Persons And The Concept Of Moral Order: A Study Of The Evangelical Ethics Of Oliver O'Donovan With Special Reference To The Barth-Brunner Debate, Bruce D. Baker May 2010

The Transformation Of Persons And The Concept Of Moral Order: A Study Of The Evangelical Ethics Of Oliver O'Donovan With Special Reference To The Barth-Brunner Debate, Bruce D. Baker

SPU Works

This dissertation investigates the evangelical ethics of Prof. Oliver O’Donovan in order to explore the implications of his “evangelical realism” for theological anthropology, moral knowledge and the concept of moral order. The Barth-Brunner debate regarding natural theology provides a lens onto these issues. Theological case studies are used to test our findings.

Chapter 1 provides an overture to these issues, paying attention to current ideas about human nature and morality, and the growing influence of neuroscience and evolutionary psychology.

Chapter 2 focuses on Resurrection and Moral Order, and elucidates the salient factors in its outline for evangelical ethics.

How Natural Is Nature? The Effect Of Burning On Presettlement Vegetation In West-Central Illinois, Paul Kilburn, Richard C. Brugam

The Confluence (2009-2020)

When the first Euroamericans arrived in North America, they thought they were seeing a “wilderness,” unaltered by human hands. However, they were actually seeing highly managed environments. Kilburn and Brugam examine the impact of the burning of forests and prairies by Native Americans on the plant species in west-central Illinois.

The Prevalence Of Technology, Greg Townsend May 2010

The Prevalence Of Technology, Greg Townsend

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The current study at hand administered a survey to determine the prevalence of technology and Internet usage in undergraduate college students. The results of a survey administered to 66 participants revealed that just about two-thirds of the students may have or had an excessive problem, which could be related to several aspects such as age, gender, class status, country of origin, and so on. The results did allow the research to support the hypothesis that stated if someone in college were given a technology and Internet addiction survey, then he/she would report that he/she is in fact addicted to the …

Body And Self-Image, Ting Chin May 2010

Body And Self-Image, Ting Chin

Perspectives

After interviewing my three respondents and after analyzing their interview data to find an issue to compare and contrast between the three, it was very apparent that all three of them have had very different, yet interesting experiences regarding their body and self image, and much of these experiences have resulted from the country they grew up in and the culture that surrounded them. In my paper, I will firstly introduce my respondents and give a brief description of their experience with body and self image. I will then compare and contrast their experiences, and attempt to analyze how they …

Geographic Information System Analysis Of Changing Demographic Patterns And Ethnic Restaurant Locations In Bowling Green, Kentucky, 1940-2005, Shwu-Jing Jeng

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The geography of food has been a popular subject for researchers and scholars who have explored the representative foods of a given region in reference to the area’s cultural identity. Food plays an important role in the development of individual cultures and civilization. Food consumption and dining habits usually reflect individuals’ location, cultural and individual identity, accessibility to food and heritage. United States is a country often called a “melting pot society.” Immigrants in the United States comprise over eight percent of the population, and various ethnic groups have reshaped American society with their unique cultures and foodways.

A Hermeneutics Of Blessing As A Meta-Requisite For Reconciliation: John E. Toews’ Romans Paradigm As A Case Study, Vern Neufeld Redekop May 2010

A Hermeneutics Of Blessing As A Meta-Requisite For Reconciliation: John E. Toews’ Romans Paradigm As A Case Study, Vern Neufeld Redekop

Peace and Conflict Studies

Within an overall framework of reconciliation as a transformation of mimetic structures of violence to mimetic structures of blessing, teachings of blessing are needed throughout the process. “Teachings” are considered as paradigmatic stories, principles, insights, and practical wisdom that are derived both from religious traditions and the human sciences. “Blessing” refers to that which contributes to sustained human well-being at the individual, collective and relational levels. A hermeneutics of blessing is a deliberate interpretive endeavour directed toward the generation of teachings of blessing. It can be used with any particular source and the insights can be both direct and inverse, …

Relationship Between Student Involvement And Gpa, Jennifer Ellen Burdick, Paige Martin May 2010

Relationship Between Student Involvement And Gpa, Jennifer Ellen Burdick, Paige Martin

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Data were collected regarding student involvement and grade point average in a way that could be beneficial to the students of Lindenwood University. Many students, whether actively involved in a sport, work, and/or other extracurricular activities, spend their college career engaging in time management. These people may have to sacrifice some schoolwork in order to accomplish everything they desire. In understanding this, the researchers wanted to see if the activities had a relationship with grade point average. The hypothesis stated that students who are actively involved outside of the classroom have less free time. These students may spend less times …

Foraging Habits And Social Learning Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus Capucinus), May 2010, Jennifer E. Koska May 2010

Foraging Habits And Social Learning Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys (Cebus Capucinus), May 2010, Jennifer E. Koska

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Foraging for food is an essential aspect to the life of Cebus capucinus. The transmission of this knowledge takes many months of careful observations and trial and error. I studied the foraging habits of C. capucinus in the Cloud Rainforest. It was predicted that there would be a difference between adults and juveniles. My data suggests that there is no difference in the foraging habits between adults and juveniles. These results suggest social learning during the juvenile phase of life impacts the foraging behavior of the C. capucinus.

Cultures In Our Community A Social Studies Unit, Anna Louise Buglino May 2010

Cultures In Our Community A Social Studies Unit, Anna Louise Buglino

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to create a yearlong unit for social studies that any teacher could pick up and implement into their classroom. It was designed using second grade standards, but can be modified for use in other grade levels. The units are integrated into all subject areas with the goal of teaching students about the community in which they live. It also was designed to create in the classroom an understanding of cultures different from their own. This will create a deeper understanding and awareness of diverse populations and their differences. The instruction of social studies education …

Acculturation, Alienation, And Hiv Risk Among The Russian-Speaking Drug Users In Estonia, Anna Skosireva May 2010

Acculturation, Alienation, And Hiv Risk Among The Russian-Speaking Drug Users In Estonia, Anna Skosireva

All Dissertations

In 1991, dramatic socio-political changes transformed the Russian-speaking population in Estonia from the governing class to an immigrant minority virtually overnight absent of a relocation or emigration process. New citizenship and language policies, and associated socioeconomic hardships, drove many of the Russian-speaking population to the edges of the society. These processes were amplified by traditional acculturation challenges that led to increased psychological distress, rising indicators of social exclusion and social alienation, and poor health, including HIV/AIDS and substance abuse, in this linguistic group during the past two decades. Given the growing relevance of cultural issues in this group as well …

The Population Genetics Of The Endangered Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, Sphyrna Lewini, Across Its Eastern Pacific Range, Holly Nance May 2010

The Population Genetics Of The Endangered Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, Sphyrna Lewini, Across Its Eastern Pacific Range, Holly Nance

All Dissertations

I have characterized the population genetic structure, inferred the evolutionary processes shaping it, and estimated effective population size (Ne) using different contemporary and coalescent methods in the endangered scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini, throughout its Eastern Pacific (EP) range. I found significant genetic differentiation among seven coastal sites between Mexico and Ecuador using 15 microsatellite loci, and significant isolation by distance among samples of mtDNA control region haplotypes. While Bayesian statistical analyses and coalescent-based methods revealed low levels of ecological connectivity between most sampled sites (point estimates of Nm = 0.6 - 7.3), mismatch analyses showed that all populations experienced …
