Why The Council Of Nicaea Still Matters For Asian Trinitarian Ontology, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy Jan 2025

Why The Council Of Nicaea Still Matters For Asian Trinitarian Ontology, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy

Landas

Does the Council of Nicaea still matter for developing Asian trinitarian ontologies? Yes. This paper examines the development of a faith-based ontology of a triune God, the centerpiece of the Nicene Creed. It advances the claim that the Nicene Trinitarian ontology is rooted in faith revelation that frames a novel construal of consubstantial (homoousios). From this, one can propose the concept of relation as a co-principle in being. Giulio Maspero calls this the objective genitive sense of the term trinitarian ontology: Christian thinkers made innovations on the dominant metaphysics of their time by discerning God’s being according to revelation. Part …

The State Of Global And African Ecology, Peter Knox Jan 2025

The State Of Global And African Ecology, Peter Knox

Landas

This article recounts the growth of concern for the environment in the latter half of the 20th Century, and its entry into Catholic magisterial theology. It expands on the ecological theory of planetary boundaries, and identifies how the theory surfaces in Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. Based upon solid contemporary science, the encyclical is well founded to outline an appropriate and compassionate moral theology of care for creation. The article cites multiple instances where African people are at the nexus of environmental and social crises, focusing on how contemporary ecological factors affect women in particular. Environmental crises should not …

Examining The Creative Process Of Visual Artists: A Phenomenological Study, Filiberto Vargas Jan 2025

Examining The Creative Process Of Visual Artists: A Phenomenological Study, Filiberto Vargas

Dissertations

Creativity fuels problem solving and innovation, driving both economic growth and individual success. Yet, many schools and organizations fail to nurture it. Today, there is a decline in creativity scores among U.S. students. This is concerning since many of these students will be the future leaders of organizations and communities. For this reason, this dissertation explores the creative process of visual artists to better understand how creativity can be cultivated. Visual artists' perspectives and sense-and-meaning-making processes offer a unique view of innovation and creativity. However, there is limited research on the creative processes of contemporary visual artists from culturally diverse …

Languaging The Infrathin Of The Everyday Un/Clear, Claire Walsh, Edward Reardon Jan 2025

Languaging The Infrathin Of The Everyday Un/Clear, Claire Walsh, Edward Reardon

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper plays within the moments felt as subject(ivity) formed within actual events, moments Whitehead describes as actual occasions. Moments pulled away from creative becoming, the Deleuze/Guattari conceptualisation of affect, their immanently relational nonbeing, to attune, or retune, into conformations acceptable to what Moten and Harney speak into as logistical capitalism and its assemblage of the ‘proper way to do things’.It is a thinking within the comprehensibility of logistical capitalism aiming “...to straighten us out, untangle [unravel] us...in the constant measure and regulation of flesh and earth,” conversing with Manning’s concept of the clear – the violent colonial destruction of …

Doing Doctorates Differently: The Parapedagogic Potentialities Of The Phd Process, Helen Bowstead, Ken Gale, Mary Catherine Garland, Claire Walsh Jan 2025

Doing Doctorates Differently: The Parapedagogic Potentialities Of The Phd Process, Helen Bowstead, Ken Gale, Mary Catherine Garland, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Coming together in this conference collectivity, these are doctorates that in their doing – thinking, researching, writing, supervising, assessing, publishing – live by “no preexisting rules, processes, methods, categories or ‘determining judgement’.”1 They are doctorates that “cannot be taught or learned.”23 Such PhDs – thesis’ refusing to (con)form – in their ever probing, in-forming, stubborn curiousness of problematics living beyond solution driven research, lead to transformative moments in the act of learning, that in their difference are “...made sense of, not in terms of what [they] mean but in terms of what [they] do.”4Yet in their difference, doctorates working within …

Accelerated Human-Induced Extinction Crisis In The World's Freshwater Mammals, Erik Joaquín Torres-Romero, Jason T. Fisher, Vincent Nijman, Fengzhi He, Timothy M. Eppley Jan 2025

Accelerated Human-Induced Extinction Crisis In The World's Freshwater Mammals, Erik Joaquín Torres-Romero, Jason T. Fisher, Vincent Nijman, Fengzhi He, Timothy M. Eppley

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Human activities have significantly impacted natural habitats and wildlife worldwide, particularly emphasizing repercussions for freshwater habitats and associated species. These negative impacts on freshwater fish are well known, but for mammal species that regularly use and dependend on freshwater systems, there is an incomplete understanding. Here, we assessed the status of freshwater and semi-aquatic mammal species inhabiting and dependent on freshwater ecosystems (hereafter referred to as freshwater mammals) and evaluated the impact of human activities on species richness both globally and by biogeographical regions. We used structural equation modeling and simultaneous autoregressive models to assess the direct and indirect effects …

Is Silence A Sustainable Act Of Self-Preservation For Asian Americans?, Laurie Nilo Jan 2025

Is Silence A Sustainable Act Of Self-Preservation For Asian Americans?, Laurie Nilo

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

This paper is a combination of self-reflection and academic writing. It begins with a description of the event that inspired this paper. This event is an example of the author's Asian American identity development journey. In this paper, the author explores the effects of silence on the lifestyle that Asian American college students can create for themselves after college and what Student Affairs professionals can do to best support these students. To do this, she draws on interviews with student affairs professionals, Yosso's (2205) theory on community cultural wealth, and Strayhorn's (2019) theory on Sense of Belonging.

Untangling Memories Of Violence: The Khipu In El Rincón De Los Muertos (Alfredo Pita), Jonathan J. Oliveri Jan 2025

Untangling Memories Of Violence: The Khipu In El Rincón De Los Muertos (Alfredo Pita), Jonathan J. Oliveri

Living in Languages

This research proposes a structural reading of El rincón de los muertos to decode and trace echoes to the khipu which are embedded throughout the novel. Contrary to a graphic writing system, the Incan empire’s khipu (khipu) was a mnemotechnic system—a three-dimensional communicative device, an archive of memory that recorded information using different colored strings, and a system of knots. Our concept of mnemonics is different than that of the indigenous communities who relied on oral tradition and specifically for khipu a khipukamayuq (reader of khipu), in a narrative and discursive manner, to reconstruct the message the khipu contained. …

Carano V. Disney: The First Amendment Right Of Expressive Association As A Defense To Firing Employees For Their Political Speech, Joel Timmer Jan 2025

Carano V. Disney: The First Amendment Right Of Expressive Association As A Defense To Firing Employees For Their Political Speech, Joel Timmer

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Following a series of controversial social media posts by actress Gina Carano, a cast member of the Disney+ Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, Disney terminated her employment on the show and announced that Carano would not appear in any future Star Wars projects. According to Disney, Carano was terminated because the views expressed in her posts did not align with the company’s values. Carano filed suit against Disney, claiming Disney violated California state labor laws that generally prohibit employers from sanctioning employees for their political activities. In response, Disney claims that the First Amendment right of expressive association provides …

From Land Reform To Landfare: Land Claims And The Welfare State In Kerala, India, Sudheesh R.C Jan 2025

From Land Reform To Landfare: Land Claims And The Welfare State In Kerala, India, Sudheesh R.C

Articles

While large-scale land reform may still be underway in many countries, other contexts have states responding to land claims through scattered land provision measures. This article puts forward “landfare” as a lens to capture such measures and unpacks its features in one location. The article first explains this term, outlining its location in and departure from the land reform scholarship. It next shows how Kerala, India, widely cited in the scholarship for its 20th century land reform, addresses the land claims of its Adivasi citizens in the 21st century through landfare. Through an exploration of Adivasi land claims and an …

Divergent Bodyminds: Kin In The Difference, Ruth Churchill Dower, Claire Walsh Jan 2025

Divergent Bodyminds: Kin In The Difference, Ruth Churchill Dower, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

In breaking the habit of ‘making sense’ typified by normative, neurotypical modes of engagement with the world, neurodiverse sociality performs a treachery in relation to prescriptive, dominating forms of normative reality. Within this conference paper, a modest site of resistance, a reconsideration of neurotypical normative reality takes place, extending beyond the boundaries underpinning neurotypical hegemonic discourse about ‘human’ reality, identity and existence: rescinding the neurotypical “normative standard for human experience” requiring the mapping of bodies in advance, to foreground bodies in excess, neurodiverse bodies subject to patterns and rhythms that defy stable or coherent identification. As bodies “always extending beyond …
