Effects Of Transferable Rhetorical Literacy Analysis Strategies On Grades 3–8 Students’ Reading Achievement, Staci Karile Hammer
Effects Of Transferable Rhetorical Literacy Analysis Strategies On Grades 3–8 Students’ Reading Achievement, Staci Karile Hammer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Revised state learning standards—including a heightened focus on analyzing an author’s purpose and craft (APC) in high-stakes assessments—has propelled efforts to evaluate rhetorical knowledge (RK) in the U.S. state of Texas and highlighted the need for student practice with rhetorical analysis. The intentional development of RK is also emphasized by the framework for success in postsecondary writing to support academic and postsecondary success. The problem addressed in this study was a lack of student practice with a transferable rhetorical literacy analysis (TRLA) strategy at a North Central Texas school district. The lack of practice was concerning considering this shift in …
British Latino: Investigating Discourse-Stylistic Variables And The Construction Of Persona Within Podcasting, Jonathan A. Pye
British Latino: Investigating Discourse-Stylistic Variables And The Construction Of Persona Within Podcasting, Jonathan A. Pye
International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest
This study expands upon previous work (McIlwaine et al., 2011; McIlwaine & Bunge, 2016) by analyzing how the Latin American community in the UK constructs identity through podcasting. The sociolinguistic construct of the persona (Campbell-Kibler, 2008; Coupland, 2007; D’Onofrio, 2020; Eckert, 2019; Podesva, 2007) is operationalized to understand how the persona of the British Latino is discursively constructed in the podcast of the British Latino Network. Using qualitative discourse analysis and values coding (Saldaña, 2013), this analysis finds that the British Latino persona is indexed in the podcast as a bricolage of four principal attributes: (1) aspirational, (2) educated, …

Displaced: An Ethnography Of Language And Identity Loss, Ariel Caroline Wilsey-Gopp
Displaced: An Ethnography Of Language And Identity Loss, Ariel Caroline Wilsey-Gopp
Dissertations and Theses
Through ethnography and personal narrative, I explore the language and identity loss of one person, my father, in order to understand the complex issues surrounding the effects of symbolic and structural violence on language and identity development. Through personal narrative, fieldwork, and interviews, I tell the story of one person, born in wartime during Nazi occupied Serbia, and follow the guiding questions: how does language get lost and what are the effects? Drawing on methodology set forth by empirical ethnographical work as well as more recent theory around epigenetics and trauma, my research synthesizes into focus three pillars of understanding …
Messianic Judaism And The Church, Robert C. Greer
Messianic Judaism And The Church, Robert C. Greer
Liberty Theological Review
One of the more curious phenomena within the Protestant Evangelical Church is Messianic Judaism. Its gospel is essentially the same as Protestant evangelicalism since Messianic Jews worship Jesus as Messiah, Savior and Lord. Yet many shun the label "Christian," preferring such titles as "fulfilled" or "completed Jews." Messianic Jews typically worship on Saturdays and observe a kosher diet. The symbol of the cross, which is ubiquitous in Protestant Evangelicalism and regarded as its most sacred symbol,, is problematic with many Messianic Jews. Messianic Judaism therefore maintains an arm's distance from Gentile Christianity. This paper is an exploration of that separation …

Public Theology And Political Polarization: Environmental Policy, Jean Golicz, Leonard S. Momeny
Liberty Theological Review
The purpose of this article is to explore the impact of public theology on potentially polarizing political views. Specifically, the historical and contemporary interpretations of the Lynn White Thesis (1966) are examined as well as the practical implications for developing environmental policies that align with a biblical worldview. The authors propose the application of multiple paradigms to the study of religiosity and environmental activism as a way of addressing the complexity and diversity of various viewpoints. Understanding the multiple ways Jesus operated in an equally contentious and polarized society creates a path forward for churches. By rejecting the supposition that …
A Man After Yahweh-Chemosh's Own Heart: Syncretism And Davidic Allusions In The Story Of Jephthah, J. Christian Doling
A Man After Yahweh-Chemosh's Own Heart: Syncretism And Davidic Allusions In The Story Of Jephthah, J. Christian Doling
Liberty Theological Review
Jephthah's story has caused no small amount of confusion among scholars as they wrestle with what to make of Jephthah's oath and subsequent sacrifice of his daughter. Some have believed that Jephthah was acting in accordance with Yahweh's wishes, others believe that he was acting out of selfish interest. However, there are two aspects of the literary makeup of the Jephthah story that can help shed some light on the subject. Firstly, the story is filled with Davidic allusions, and the second aspect is syncretism. The Davidic allusions paint Jephthah as a prefigurement of David. In other words, David and …

No. 34: Food Insecurity And The Coping Strategies Of West African Migrants In Accra, Ghana, Ralph Armah, Mary B. Setrana, Peter Quartey, Aba Crentsil, Cynthia Addoquaye Tagoe, Innocent Agbelie
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
This paper examines the food insecurity experiences and coping strategies of West African migrants in Accra, Ghana, across three periods: pre-COVID-19, during the pandemic, and post-COVID-19. Utilizing a survey of 420 migrants, the study explores the interplay between remittances, socioeconomic factors, and food security. The findings reveal that food insecurity was most severe during the pandemic, with remittances—especially food remittances—offering limited mitigation due to underlying vulnerabilities. Coping strategies employed by migrants included reducing meal frequency, relying on less preferred foods, borrowing food, and seeking social support. The study highlights the need for targeted policies to strengthen urban food systems, provide …

Restoring The Soul To Birthing In Miami: A Call For Justice For Obstetric Racism In Miami–Dade County, Jordan Brooks, Jamarah Amani, Sannisha Dale, Dr. Karen A. Scott
University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review
For far too many Black mothers and birthing people, U.S. hospitals are dangerous and fail to keep our Black mothers and birthing people and their babies safe, alive, and thriving during and after childbirth. The confluence of medical racism and obstetric violence—obstetric racism—leads to a disproportionate rate of predictable, preventable, and unfair death, sickness, and trauma for Black birthing people and babies in the afterlife of slavery. Obstetric racism, as defined by Davis, is both an analytic and phenomenon that describes mechanisms of subordination, control, and dominance to which Black mothers and birthing people are subjected by health systems and …

Cross-State Travel For Cancer Care And Implications For Telehealth Reciprocity, Erika L. Moen, Qianfei Wang, Lingbo Liu, Fahui Wang, Anna N.A. Tosteson, Rebecca E. Smith, Lauren Cowan, Tracy Onega
Faculty Publications
Importance: Patients often travel for cancer care, yet the extent to which patients cross state lines for cancer care is not well understood. This knowledge can have implications for policies that regulate telehealth access to out-of-state clinicians. Objective: To quantify the extent of cross-state delivery of cancer services to patients with cancer. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study analyzed fee-for-service Medicare claims data for beneficiaries (aged ≥66 years) with a diagnosis of breast, colon, lung, or pancreatic cancer between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2020. Analyses were performed between January 1 and July 30, 2024. Exposure: Patient rurality. …
