Humans emerged across Africa shortly before 300 thousand years ago (ka)1,2,3. Although this pan-African evolutionary process implicates diverse environments in the human story, the role of tropical forests remains poorly understood. Here we report a clear association between late Middle Pleistocene material culture and a wet tropical forest in southern Côte d’Ivoire, a region of present-day rainforest. Twinned optically stimulated luminescence and electron spin resonance dating methods constrain the onset of human occupations at Bété I to around 150 ka, linking them with Homo sapiens. Plant wax biomarker, stable isotope, phytolith and pollen …

Of Cordial Ladies And Independent Women: An Analysis Of The Ceramic Assemblage Of The 19th Century Cooper-Frost-Austin House, Mikayla Roderick
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis explores the transformation of Susan Austin’s (1807-1885) household in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from a private family home into a boardinghouse, challenging traditional distinctions between domestic and economic spaces. Using feminist and queer theoretical frameworks, it examines how Austin’s decisions blurred public and private boundaries, creating an intimate boardinghouse. Through ceramic analysis of two occupational phases and a documentary examination of the household members over time, this study identifies shifts in material culture that reflect changing household practices, social relationships, and status negotiation. Austin intentionally created an environment where commercial spaces took on a domestic appearance, integrating elements of familiarity …

INTRODUCTION: The diversity of participating investigators representing diverse disciplines, career stages, stakeholder groups, regions and types of institutions is essential for the success of large-scale research programmes. In 2021, the National Institutes of Health introduced a requirement for some of its large grants to include a separate section that describes the project's plan for enhancing diverse perspectives (PEDPs). Our project aims to develop consensus-based PEDP evaluation metrics and instruments that can be systematically and sustainably collected across the projects.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Evaluation work is organised into three objectives. First, shared knowledge about PEDP infrastructures, activities and outcomes will be …

In December 2022, members of the College and University Archives Section of the Society of American Archivists conducted a survey that examined the prevalence of impostor phenomenon (IP) among archivists. This study, the first to specifically focus on archivists, measures the prevalence of IP in the professional archival community. Using demographic data and the Clance Survey, the authors seek to identify factors that may lead to increased IP in archivists. This paper will review literature related to IP in the information sciences profession, detail the survey results, and suggest personal approaches and workplace initiatives to combat the phenomenon.

Becoming A Learner: An Autoethnography, Joshua Dickinson
Dissertations and Theses
It is well understood that attitudes toward language learning impact outcomes. This thesis uses autoethnography to explore the author's experiences learning German, in-class and independently, examining the interplay between motivation, attitudes, and the learning environment. I analyze personal journals and notes, employing graphic storytelling to illustrate their emotional journey. This paper draws upon existing literature on second language acquisition, particularly focusing on Dörnyei's L2 Motivational Self System and Ushioda's person-in-context approach. The study reveals how personal beliefs, self-doubt, and the limitations of traditional classroom settings impacted my motivation and ultimately, how reflection facilitated a renewed commitment to learning. In conclusion, …

The Inadequacy Of Legal Provisions On Workplace Sexual Harassment In Nigeria And Ghana: The Way Forward, Emuobo Emudainohwo
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
Sexual harassment has been a persistent problem in workplaces in Nigeria and Ghana. The legal provisions in both jurisdictions generally focus on the definition of “sexual harassment” without remedies for the harassment, sanctions, enforcement procedures, anti-sexual harassment policies, complaint procedures, etc., that can control sexual harassment in the workplace. The article examines the scantiness and inadequacy of legal provisions on workplace sexual harassment in Nigeria and Ghana, suggesting a way forward. The doctrinal research method has been deployed, focusing on relevant Nigerian and Ghanaian legal provisions. The article considers the organization theory of sexual harassment, using it as a framework, …

Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
The struggles of indigenous peoples in both New Zealand and Indonesia to gain legal recognition remain ongoing. This study focuses on two central aspects. Firstly, it examines the historical-legal journey of indigenous peoples in their quest for legal acknowledgment. Secondly, it makes a comparative analysis with New Zealand, highlighting the potential contributions that indigenous peoples can provide to their respective countries. The study follows a legal research methodology, linking existing issues with authoritative sources and real-world situations. The findings reveal that in New Zealand, indigenous peoples possess a legal standing, albeit not entirely comprehensive. Conversely, Indonesian regulations do not provide …

Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (Slapp): A Legal Based Threat To Freedom Of Expression, Eko Riyadi, Sahid Hadi
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
There are still many attempts to silence freedom of expression in Indonesia. One of the ways to silence the freedom of expression in Indonesia is Strategic Lawsuit against Public Participation (SLAPP). This study analyzed at least three SLAPP cases in Indonesia: (1) the case of Prita Mulyasari vs. the Omni International Alam Sutera Hospital in Tangerang; (2) the case of Budi Heryawan as known as Budi Pego; and (3) the case of Nur Alam vs. Basuki Wasis. This study proposed two questions. First, what is the pattern and portrait of SLAPP in Indonesia? Second, how is the analysis of human …

World Heritage Convention And Transnational Legal Process To Protect Indonesian Nature, Ary Aprianto
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
The World Heritage Convention demands its states parties to strengthen mechanisms to conserve and preserve natural and cultural heritage consistently. A party to the Convention, Indonesia faces challenges to maintain the balance of economic, social, and environment considerations, pertaining to policies that affect natural heritage. Nevertheless, Indonesia remains committed to observe the Convention’s rules, including ones on sustainability and conservation. As analyzed through transnational legal process theory, the performance of this commitment helps to internalize the Convention’s rules into domestic context. It is suggested that Indonesia step up its interaction with the Convention’s actors in the hope of expanding the …

The Implication Of The Globalization On The Pancasila-Based Principles Of Local Democracy In Indonesia, Seno Wibowo Gumbira, Jamal Wiwoho
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
Abstract
The liberalism principles have influenced the whole life aspects of the nation and the state of Indonesia. On the political aspect, the principles influence the elections in Indonesia from the lowest (village head election) to the highest (presidential election) levels. The liberal principles are not in accordance with the principles of Pancasila as the national philosophy and the source of law (staatsfundamental norm) of Indonesia. The liberal democratic principles cause high cost democracy. They create the conditions of ‘free fight’ and ‘homo homini lupus’, as well as many potential corruption practices in villages. In addition, it …

Penyelesaian Konflik Berbasis Desa Di Indonesia (Studi Kasus Di Desa Yosorejo, Jawa Tengah), M. Ya'kub Aiyub Kadir
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
Paradigmatic Reverse In The Legal Policy Of The Notion Of Deliberative Democracy From People's Consultative Assembly (Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat) To Village (A Preliminary Study), Inna Junaenah
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
Abstract
This article aims to assert that some regulatory mechanisms, such as the appointment of members of and the voting for decision in both Indonesia Peoples Deliberative Assembly (MPR) and village flows in a formalizing pattern from the top governmental body of the central, to the regional, and to the ends at the boom level, the village. This also applies the procedural aspects of the democratic system where the organizational body is made as formal, uniform, and permanent in structure (despite the periods). This somehow seems contradictory with the noon of deliberative democracy (demorasi permusyawaratan) once upheld by the founding …

Teacher And Student Roles In Freire’S Critical Pedagogy: A Qualitative Case Study, Joan Nkansaa Nkansah
Teacher And Student Roles In Freire’S Critical Pedagogy: A Qualitative Case Study, Joan Nkansaa Nkansah
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Research has indicated that many teachers and students lack the critical classroom experience where they play the roles of subjects controlling the educational process and developing knowledge together. With an emphasis on teaching instead of learning, classroom interactions are limited, and creativity and the cultivation of critical thinking skills and critical consciousness are restricted. This qualitative case study explored the instructional delivery methods in a Ghanaian university through the lens of teacher and student roles, a concept of Paulo Freire’s critical pedagogy. The study purposefully selected 11 participants (eight students, two teachers, and one administrative staff) who provided substantial data …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The Andronovo Culture, which originated from the Sintashta Culture, played a significant role in the migration of populations across the Eurasian steppe. The Tianshan Mountains, situated at the eastern end of Eurasian steppe, became the main distribution area of Andronovo culture in Xinjiang during the Late Bronze Age (LBA). To investigate the genetic structure, genetic diversity, and possible migration routes of the Late Bronze Age Andronovo population, we conducted mitochondrial genomes analysis on 12 individuals excavated from the Shihuyao cemetery in the Central Tianshan of Xinjiang. The results revealed that Shihuyao population exhibited high genetic diversity, and a close genetic …

Luminescence Dating And Its Application To Anthropogenic Sedimentary Sequences:Tepecik-Çiftlik Prehistoric Settlement, Eren Şahi̇ner, Mehmet Korhan Erturaç
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Luminescence dating is a fundamental technique in the field of earth sciences research, offering a reliable method fordetermining the age of sediments and artifacts. Applications of luminescence dating in archaeology include the dating of ancienthabitation sites, burial mounds, and artifacts such as pottery. This provides a chronological framework for understanding humanactivities and environmental changes over millennia. The capacity of luminescence dating to ascertain the age of events spanning a fewdecades to several hundred thousand years renders it an indispensable instrument for the construction of timelines and interpretationof the past. This study presents a concise overview of the various stages of …
