Editorial Comments The Old Homestead, Fred B. Kniffen

The Geographical Bulletin

In a less restrictive sense the same is true of our modern households. All the basic needs common to man the animal must be provided for. However, our great technical advancement over primitive peoples permits a variety of ways in which we shape our shelters, prepare our foods, and supply needs we were not even aware of a century ago. We have radio, TV, and kitchen appliances to perform tasks accomplished by hand when I was a lad. Let me illustrate by example. As a boy in the first years of the century I lived in a modest village on …

“We Will Tend To It”: The Reconstruction Of The Wimauma, Florida’S Bethune Area Through Archival Research And Oral Histories, Alanah Cooper

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on heritage preservation efforts led by Wimauma community members interested in preserving the history and heritage of Wimauma’s Bethune Area—a historically African American community. This study aims to challenge the dominant narratives of Wimauma that erase/silence the tangible and intangible legacy of the Bethune Area. By collecting and drawing upon oral histories from community residents; engaging in participant observations; conducting archival research, my thesis will strive to construct an expanded narrative of Wimauma to include the history and heritage of the Bethune Area and the everyday lives of underrepresented people and families who helped shape Wimauma. This …

Assessing The Micro- And Macroscopic Changes Of Taphonomically Altered Bone, Shelby Feirstein Mar 2025

Assessing The Micro- And Macroscopic Changes Of Taphonomically Altered Bone, Shelby Feirstein

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Forensic identifications may be hampered when perpetrators find unique ways of obscuring their victims’ identities, such as fire and household corrosive substances. Thermal alteration, sodium hydroxide, and hydrochloric acid are known to change both the structural integrity and composition of skeletal elements; but the patterns of these processes, nor how each may affect the potential for obtaining identifying DNA data, are well understood.

Burned bone concomitantly follows a defined color spectrum and eventually reaches calcination, consisting only of its original inorganic mineral, hydroxyapatite, which is naturally white in color and brittle.

In contrast, analyses of chemical exposure focus on total …

Capital Structure Strategies For Catalyzing The Growth Of Mining Companies In Developing Countries, Pepe Kalombo Kapompa

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A lack of effective strategies to develop capital structures affects operational profit and growth. Consequently, leaders of mining companies in the Democratic Republic of Congo are concerned about the significant financial losses resulting from these deficiencies. Grounded in trade-off theory of capital structure, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies that leaders of mining companies in the Democratic Republic of Congo used to develop capital structures that enhance operational profit and growth. The participants included three business leaders from three mining companies who successfully implemented such strategies. Data were collected from semistructured interviews and company …

Understanding the capacity of forests to adapt to climate change is of pivotal importance for conservation science, yet this is still widely unknown. This knowledge gap is particularly acute in high-biodiversity tropical forests. Here, we examined how tropical forests of the Americas have shifted community trait composition in recent decades as a response to changes in climate. Based on historical trait-climate relationships, we found that, overall, the studied functional traits show shifts of less than 8% of what would be expected given the observed changes in climate. However, the recruit assemblage shows shifts of 21% relative to climate change expectation. …

Advancing Telemedicine Adoption: Insights From Health Behavior Models With A Focus On The Multi-Theory Model, Rahib K. Islam, Abigail E. Watson, Alec Robitaille, Manoj Sharma, Robert E. Davis, Joshua T. Clark, Vinayak K. Nahar

Journal of Public Health in the Deep South

Telemedicine, the use of digital communication technologies to deliver clinical healthcare remotely, has emerged as a pivotal advancement in modern medicine. By providing virtual consultations, asynchronous data transmission, and remote patient monitoring (RPM), telemedicine enhances accessibility, particularly for underserved populations, while promoting efficiency and continuity of care. As telemedicine transforms healthcare delivery, its adoption hinges on understanding health behaviors—actions influenced by psychological, sociocultural, and environmental factors. These behaviors can be categorized into preventative, illness, and risk-related actions, with established models like the Health Belief Model (HBM), Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and Transtheoretical Model (TTM) offering insights into behavior change mechanisms. …

Whole Broken People Wholeness Of Life At All Ages, Brenda K. Lewis Mar 2025

Whole Broken People Wholeness Of Life At All Ages, Brenda K. Lewis

Doctor of Ministry

NPO Statement

Experiences of lost independence or control overwhelm or block the spiritual coping mechanisms of some Independent Living residents at Givens Estates.

Key Research Insights

Deep cultural bias, denial, and a lack of realistic role models form blocks between us and healthy coping with the realities of aging. When we lose independence and control, we often lose our expected storyline, our sense of our identity, and our understanding of the role of our spiritual traditions. The Christian tradition offers rich resources for redefining our story and ourselves in ways that deepen our faith and our connection with the people …

Industrialization adversely affects the gut microbiome and predisposes individuals to chronic non-communicable diseases. We tested a microbiome restoration strategy comprising a diet that recapitulated key characteristics of non-industrialized dietary patterns (restore diet) and a bacterium rarely found in industrialized microbiomes (Limosilactobacillus reuteri) in a randomized controlled feeding trial in healthy Canadian adults. The restore diet, despite reducing gut microbiome diversity, enhanced the persistence of L. reuteri strain from rural Papua New Guinea (PB-W1) and redressed several microbiome features altered by industrialization. The diet also beneficially altered microbiota-derived plasma metabolites implicated in the etiology of chronic non-communicable diseases. Considerable …

Uncertainty As A Catalyst For Growth: Learning Through Dialogue, Questioning, And Reflection, Eric Jennings, Hans Kishel

International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education

Higher education institutions strive to turn out graduates that are well-rounded, engaged, and civic-minded individuals no matter their discipline or major. The authors believe that more can be done to ensure that this goal is attained. To address this issue, two librarians designed a learner-centered course that embraced the uncertainty found in today’s information landscape through the use of dialog, questioning, and reflection. This article will describe the social and educational atmosphere at colleges that necessitates looking deeper into how and why colleges and universities need to build these new types of courses to meet their goals. From there, it …

Amplifying Underrepresented Voices: Advancing Citation Justice In Scholarly Communication, Heather Cunningham Mar 2025

Amplifying Underrepresented Voices: Advancing Citation Justice In Scholarly Communication, Heather Cunningham

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Voices of scholars are raised and amplified through the academic currency of citations. However, not all voices are heard and shared equally. Citation justice is an increasingly recognized issue within academic circles, focusing on the under-citation of women and people of color. This systemic bias, evident across many disciplines, impacts career progression, grant acquisition, and ultimately diversity among decision-makers. Citation practices are pivotal in shaping academic discourse, research, and education. Despite the significant influence of these practices, there is currently no comprehensive method to assess citation biases based on the demographics of authors. Efforts to measure diversity through computational analysis …

Institutional Racism In The Discretionary Legalization Of Marijuana, Gary D. Brinker, Haoyang Liu Mar 2025

Institutional Racism In The Discretionary Legalization Of Marijuana, Gary D. Brinker, Haoyang Liu

Times Talk Archive & ADP Projects

Dr. Gary Brinker and Haoyang Liu will present their research on a conceptthey call “discretionary legalization of marijuana.” Critical race researchershave found strong evidence that many police officers practice“discretionary arrest,” for example pulling drivers over for being black andconducting unjustified searches, while only pulling white drivers over forviolations and ignoring any evidence of marijuana use. Their research showsthat the states with larger African-American populations, particularly thosesuspected of practicing discretionary arrest, are less likely to legalizerecreational marijuana, supporting this theory.

Historical Perspective And Contribution Of Aquaculture To The Amr Global Pandemic, Miriam Reverter, Sarahi Vega-Heredía, Philip Warburton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The global rise in the emergence and spread of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites) that have developed or acquired new resistance mechanisms to drugs, commonly referred as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is alarming. The emergence and spread of AMR, which is mostly attributed to the use (often overuse and misuse) of antimicrobial substances such as antibiotics, is not a new phenomenon. In fact, AMR was discovered several decades ago. However, exponential increases in global antimicrobial use have led to a rise in the emergence and spread of AMR, which is nowadays considered as one of the top ten global public …

State-Powered Acceleration Of Cannabis Economy Growth Engines, Benjamin C. Varadi Mar 2025

State-Powered Acceleration Of Cannabis Economy Growth Engines, Benjamin C. Varadi

Pace Law Review

Small cannabis companies in state-regulated markets have driven extraordinary job creation and economic growth, but now face extinction as consolidation looms. Government intervention can build a future populated with prosperous small business growth engines, while failure to act will magnify economic disparity. This Article proposes state-backed loan guarantees, funded by municipal “cannabonds,” as a novel solution to guide the industry toward a healthier and more diverse economic landscape. This approach offers constitutionally resilient strategies to express explicit preference for local stakeholders and inverts traditional risk metrics to leverage historic institutional lending bias as a force for positive change. In doing …

Robust projections and predictions of climate variability and change, particularly at regional scales, rely on the driving processes being represented with fidelity in model simulations. Consequently, the role of enhanced horizontal resolution in improved process representation in all components of the climate system continues to be of great interest. Recent simulations suggest the possibility of significant changes in both large-scale aspects of the ocean and atmospheric circulations and in the regional responses to climate change, as well as improvements in representations of small-scale processes and extremes, when resolution is enhanced. The first phase of the High-Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP1) …

Shiny New Beginnings: Reaching For Celestial Bodies In Romance And Research, Alexandra C. H. Nowakowski

The Qualitative Report

This commentary explores a series of social fiction novels about relationships through the lens of ethnographic research. It amplifies the lessons about love and life from Dr. Patricia Leavy’s Celestial Bodies series focused around two people with complex trauma finding kinship and healing with one another after a chance meeting. In the process, it uplifts the rigor and uniqueness of Leavy’s methods in translating findings from many years of observational research with people in different kinds of relationships to the social fiction format whose name she coined herself. In journeying through a shared life with main protagonists Tess Lee and …
