Evaluating The Impact Of The Scottish Enlightenment On The Formation Of The United States Government, Lene Carroll
Evaluating The Impact Of The Scottish Enlightenment On The Formation Of The United States Government, Lene Carroll
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
To what extent did the Scottish Enlightenment impact the founding of the United States government? This dissertation begins to answer the question by first acknowledging that the Scottish Enlightenment as an independent branch of the overarching intellectual movement separate from both the British and the French. Scottish Enlightenment theories were not only relegated to the capital, but instead, would spread throughout the cities and towns to encourage a community involvement in the growth of new ideas. Some key theories attributed to the Scottish Enlightenment are the Stadial Theory, Ideal Theory, Common-Sense Philosophy, and most well-known, Moral Philosophy. Tracing the ideological …

A Qualitative Sociopsychological Study Of Expectancy Violation And Uses And Gratifications Theories Pertaining To Phubbing Behavior And Reception In Generation X Women, Sandra Joslyn Tallarico
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The overall aim of this dissertation project was to examine the effects of phone snubbing, called phubbing, on Generation X women born between 1965 and 1980 who reside in the United States. This qualitative dissertation explored the experiences Generation X women have with the reception and action of the act of phubbing others through 18 semi-structured interviews via dyadic face-to-face conversation. The study’s findings indicate that Generation X women dislike being phubbed, negatively impacting conversational, communication, and relational satisfaction. Further indications suggest Generation X women typically try to avoid phubbing others, except for the felt need to check on their …
Integrated Marketing And Impact To Consumer Loyalty And Customer Satisfaction, Richard A. Sizemore
Integrated Marketing And Impact To Consumer Loyalty And Customer Satisfaction, Richard A. Sizemore
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation explored how the lack of an effective marketing strategy can result in the loss of consumer loyalty and customer satisfaction when a grocery retailer takes an omnichannel approach. The researcher used a flexible, single case study to explore the potential when a grocery retailer offers services for in-store and virtual platforms when an integrated marketing strategy is not used resulting in the loss of brand equity. The researcher was guided by two critical questions and two sub questions to set the limitations, assumptions and delimitations to understand a contemporary issue. The literature review, which contained over 110 peer-reviewed …

Art Therapists’ Perspectives On Exploring Sexuality In Treatment Sessions, Daniel Blausey
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This study examined the relationships between U.S. based graduate-level art therapists’ (N = 174) personal and professional characteristics and their decisions to explore sexuality in sessions. A mixed-methods concurrent design generated quantitative and qualitative data through a one-time anonymous internet study centering on two clinical case vignettes. One vignette highlighted gender nonconformity, the other the sexualization of the therapist. Comparison of years of art therapy experience for two groups, those who interacted with one vignette before exiting and those who interacted with both found the group that rated both vignettes had more years of AT experience (M = …
The Importance Of Keeping The Constitutional Foundation Strong, Ellie Shoemaker
The Importance Of Keeping The Constitutional Foundation Strong, Ellie Shoemaker
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
A house with a weak foundation will inevitably fall. Foundations are essential to the rise and longevity of everything built. From architecture to ideas, governments are no different. They need strong foundations to guide laws and to shape the nation’s future. America’s foundation is its Constitution; it is the cornerstone for the Liberty American citizens enjoy and the Justice system that maintains law and order, it outlines what the founding fathers desired for the country, laying down the framework for the rights of citizens for generations to come. Every law must align with the Constitution as it continues to provide …
Eastern Strategic Thought And Its Connection To Confucianism, Taoism And Chinese Buddhism Compared To Christianity In Western Strategic Thought, Joshua Harden
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
Belief, whether religious in origin or the culmination of experiences and wisdom is part of the foundation for strategic intent. Personal decisions, situational leadership, and character are derived from the foundational worldview of the individual and this individual is characterized by a multitude of principles that make up their worldview. This can be extrapolated to explore the philosophical underpinnings of eastern strategic thought in comparison to that of western strategic thought. Eastern strategic thought is heavily influenced by Taoism, Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism but to what degree and to what end have these mechanisms influenced eastern strategic thought. On the …

Classical Worldview And Secular Materialism: Natural Law And The Political Ideals Of Modernity In The Formation Of Consequential Public Policy, David W. Bolton
Helms School of Government Spring Public Policy Conference
Historically, morality has been rooted in and expressed through a religious lens. Early views on morality were often formed under the auspices of the reward/penalty social contract displayed in historical religious texts. Questions arise. If morality did not have a basis in religion, from where would its ideals and structure be provided for otherwise? How does one evaluate the standards and effectiveness of secular morality? In this paper, the major factors exposing the failures of modern secular materialistic liberalism will be explored: freedom of choice and modern liberal politics; God’s existence as a cardinal assumption of all philosophy and the …

An Interdisciplinary Analysis Framework For Found Object Experimental Music, Erin Demastes
An Interdisciplinary Analysis Framework For Found Object Experimental Music, Erin Demastes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Found object experimental music consists of compositions and performances created with objects not intended for musical performance. Found objects can range from appliances and household items to power tools and consumer products to souvenirs and heirlooms. Although these objects are used with the intent of creating musical compositions, new characteristics that are not found in traditional music emerge. One major characteristic that differentiates found object music from traditional music is that the objects have inherent cultural associations and meaning outside of their use in the composition. While an analysis of the sonic structures and scores of found object experimental music …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
ObjectivesHumans display species-wide right-hand preference across tasks, but this pattern has not been observed at comparable levels in nonhuman primates, suggesting the behavior arose after the panin-hominin split. Muscle attachment sites (entheses) are used to infer soft tissue anatomy and reconstruct behaviors within skeletal populations, but whether entheseal size asymmetry can reflect hand preference remains unclear. If entheseal asymmetry is linked to hand preference, we expect to see greater asymmetry in human hands, where hand preference is more pronounced, compared to nonhuman primates. We tested for bilateral asymmetry in the size of the opponens pollicis muscle flange using a sample …

Exploring The Experiences Of Women In Guyana's Male-Dominated Transport And Logistics Industry, Jennifer Prashad
Exploring The Experiences Of Women In Guyana's Male-Dominated Transport And Logistics Industry, Jennifer Prashad
JWU Dissertations & Theses
The pursuit of gender equality in the Caribbean and Latin America is a significant issue, as indicated by the 2022 Global Gender Disparity Report, which projects that, at its current pace, it will require 132 years to eliminate gender inequality globally. Given the historical male dominance in the transport and logistics sector, the purpose of this study was to explore Guyanese women's experiences in this male-dominated industry (Ng & Acker, 2020). Incorporated into this research was Eagly's (1978) Social Role Theory to analyze how societal roles and physical distinctions influence gender inequalities and the entrenched norms that shape women's roles. …

Maintaining Intimacy In Long-Term Marriages During Graduate School, Marina G. Bunch, Matthew Lyons, Nicholas Boyd, Robyn Flores, Kashvi Khanna
School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
This qualitative study explored the process of maintaining intimacy among graduate counseling students in long-term marriages. Recognizing that stressors of graduate school can challenge marital relationships, the study used grounded theory methodology to analyze the experiences of nine participants enrolled in Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP)-accredited counseling programs. The emergent themes include choice and intention, connection and communication, acceptance of growth and change, identifying and supporting needs, and sharing dreams and interests. These themes collectively form the maintaining marital intimacy theory, which emphasizes that intimacy in marriage evolves and requires intentional effort, especially with graduate …

Fighting Instinct: The Brain, Emotions And Decision-Making In The Water, Jill Nash, Sam Hills
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
This conceptual paper explores the complex interplay among the human brain, emotions, and decision-making processes, particularly in aquatic environments. Integrating insights from neuroscience, psychology, and behavioural economics, we investigate how instinctual responses and emotional states influence our decisions during water-related activities. By analysing both biological and psychological factors, the paper aims to illuminate the intricacies of human behaviour in various aquatic settings and highlights significant gaps in the research on emotional decision-making that warrant further investigation. Additionally, the paper suggests interventions, including plausible communication strategies, to mitigate the impact of instinctual responses and improve safety and decision-making efficiency.

Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"For previously incarcerated persons, affordable and safe housing options are scarce. Barriers to securing housing include federal mandates (i.e., eligibility requirements) as well as local rules and regulations (i.e., zoning and ordinances). When housing is available, disclosing criminal history on applications impacts individuals’ chances to rent (Philips & Spencer, 2013). A lack of a consistent rental history, no personal and/or employment references, and securing capital to cover security deposits are added challenges. Since parole rules direct ex-convicts not to associate with others that have a criminal record, living with partners, friends, and family members may not be an option. Research …

The Nigeria Correctional Service is an agency of the criminal justice system (CJS), saddled with the responsibility of safe custody and rehabilitation of persons remanded. This paper examined the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates in Nigeria correctional centers, focusing on the Ikoyi Custodial Center, Lagos state. For rehabilitation to occur, certain conditions must be necessary, including the welfare of inmates in recreational activities and vocational training/skill acquisition. Data was collected using structured questionnaires administered to one hundred and fifty (150) inmates and in-depth interviews. Results from the study showed a significant positive relationship between recreational activities and rehabilitation. It also …
Beloved Elder: The Spiritual Journey Of Aging, Elizabeth Nielsen
Beloved Elder: The Spiritual Journey Of Aging, Elizabeth Nielsen
Doctor of Ministry
Aging has changed significantly in recent decades due to medical, economic, and social factors. The increasing length of American lives is both a blessing and a challenge for families and elders themselves, but our cultural and theological foundations are not sufficient to address this situation.
My NPO emerged from pastoral experience caring for elders: Aging Christians often struggle to know the presence and love of God finding their faith practices to be inadequate for the distinctive challenges of aging.
Key insights from my research include:
- The most significant challenge of aging is surrender to childlikeness before God. In late life …
