Influence Of Field Trips On Adolescent Environmental Stewardship: Examining The Role Of The Dominant Social Paradigm, Gita Bhushal, Meghann Smith, Pankaj Lal, Neeraj Vedwan

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Promoting environmental stewardship among youths is crucial for inspiring collaborative, multi-generational actions to tackle long-term environmental challenges. This research study explores the impact of an environmental education (EE) field trip, which highlighted wastewater management and renewable energy technology, on high school students using the revised new ecological paradigm (NEP) scale as a key metric in a pre-post survey, which uses traditionally pro (NEP) and anti (dominant social paradigm, DSP) conservationist statements to measure beliefs towards the environment. When applying the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (null hypothesis t = 0, no change) to the series of environmental stewardship action questions “___ is …

Comparing Concepts And Applications Of Reflexivity In Qualitative And Quantitative Social Sciences: Impacts For Results, Relationship, And Reputation, Cecily Shepherd Jul 2025

Comparing Concepts And Applications Of Reflexivity In Qualitative And Quantitative Social Sciences: Impacts For Results, Relationship, And Reputation, Cecily Shepherd

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Reflexivity, as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary (2025), is the ability to examine one's own feelings, reactions, and motives—and how these influence thought and behavior in a given situation. In the social sciences, inconsistent applications of reflexivity across qualitative and quantitative methodologies can undermine research reliability, hinder community engagement, and damage institutional reputations. The concept was first addressed in The Child in America by William and Dorothy Swain (1928), and later championed by Alvin Gouldner in The Coming Crisis of Western Sociology (1970), who called for a reflexive sociology. Today, reflexivity is widely used to mitigate bias, enhance validity, and …

Tefl In Rural Schools Of Uruguay: Designing A Network Of Practice To Enhance Language Teaching, Vanessa Z. Mari, Valentina Alpuín

The Rural Educator

This article explores the program “Inglés Sin Límites” (English Without Limits), established in Uruguay to bridge teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) instruction between urban and rural schools. As part of these efforts, the Godparents Project was created to develop a network of practices in which educators in rural schools could be supported in the teaching of English. Through the lens of a network of practice, we discuss the approaches used to support teachers as well as recommendations for expanding these practices and supporting rural teachers and students.

Syntax-Enhanced Boundary-Aware Named Entity Recognition Model, Chuanming Yu, Bin Deng, Zhengang Zhang Jul 2025

Syntax-Enhanced Boundary-Aware Named Entity Recognition Model, Chuanming Yu, Bin Deng, Zhengang Zhang

Journal of Scientific Information Research

[Purpose/significance] This study addresses the issue of inadequate perception of entity boundaries in traditional character-level modeling-based named entity recognition models by integrating syntax information containing entity boundary features into the task using a multi-head graph attention network with dense connections. This integration enhances the effectiveness of named entity recognition.

[Method/process] This study proposes a Syntax-enhanced Boundary-aware Named Entity Recognition Model (SynBNER), which utilizes BERT for text semantic representation and integrates syntax information using a dense-connected graph attention network. This integration incorporates implicit entity boundary information from syntax information into word representations, thereby enhancing the model's entity boundary perception capability.

From Palimpsest To Prompt: Rewriting Shakespeare, Creative Authorship, And The Generative Logics Of Large Language Models In Contemporary Theatre, Michael Harding, James Hutson Jul 2025

From Palimpsest To Prompt: Rewriting Shakespeare, Creative Authorship, And The Generative Logics Of Large Language Models In Contemporary Theatre, Michael Harding, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the convergence of creative authorship, adaptation, and generative artificial intelligence within contemporary theatre, taking Michael Harding‘s Awake, Young King as a central case study. Through the rewriting of Shakespearean drama, Harding‘s creative process demonstrates how theatrical meaning emerges through ongoing negotiation among playwright, performer, and audience, with scripts historically subject to revision, improvisation, and reinterpretation. Concerns regarding copyright, intellectual property, and the role of AI in the performing arts are reframed as extensions of enduring debates over originality and authorship, rather than novel threats. Tracing the evolution from The Rise of James VI to Awake, Young King, …

Coastal communities have complex bodies of knowledge around environmental change, resilience, and sustainability, which extractive forms of research are not well suited to understand. This paper outlines an arts-based action research pilot project to understand social-ecological resilience in the Western Indian Ocean. Our project used visual, artistic, and participatory approaches to foster co-learning and action research on: (1) the arts-based methods themselves and (2) resilience building in coastal communities and ecosystems. This paper focuses on the former elements. We present our inherently phenomenological approach as a research assemblage that can be used to bring together different communities and stakeholders, disciplines, …

Defending The Golden Fleece: A Study Of Disruption And Resilience In The Movement To Defund Public Libraries In Louisiana, Ciel Lane Quebedeaux

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this moment of societal change and institutional capture, public educational institutions have become sites of contention where national ideological and political debates are carried out in local school and library board meetings across the country. In Louisiana, the creation and expansion of a statewide conservative organization has led to the defunding of public libraries sparked by accusations of grooming and inappropriate programming. In response, local library defenders have created another statewide organization to share information and organizing strategies to combat disinformation campaigns propagated by conservative organizers at local and state levels. This qualitative study includes in-depth interviews with library …

Evolving Ontology And The Case Against Predictive Algorithms In The U.S. Justice System, Eryn Reyes Leong Jul 2025

Evolving Ontology And The Case Against Predictive Algorithms In The U.S. Justice System, Eryn Reyes Leong

Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies

In the United States today, predictive algorithms, a particular form of artificial intelligence (AI), permeate all segments of society, including the criminal justice system. With the help of AI, judges are able to “plug” defendants into algorithms and generate outputs that produce a deterministic and homogenous view of defendants. Proponents of predictive algorithms cite accuracy, neutrality, fairness, and efficiency, but what is missing from their calculus is the human person, the central figure who shapes and is shaped by algorithms. Using the story of defendant Darnell Gates as a case study, this article seeks to contribute to the development of …

Elisabetta Sirani’S Timoclea: Baroque Agency And The Aesthetics Of Feminine Rage, Shaylen Grace Gardner Jul 2025

Elisabetta Sirani’S Timoclea: Baroque Agency And The Aesthetics Of Feminine Rage, Shaylen Grace Gardner

Theses

This thesis examines Timoclea Kills the Captain of Alexander the Great (1659) by Elisabetta Sirani as a foundational example of feminine rage within the Baroque period. By framing Timoclea’s violent act not as an outlier or solely reactive gesture, but as a deliberate, composed assertion of power, Sirani constructs a model of feminine agency that defies patriarchal expectations of female submission and passivity. Through interdisciplinary analysis grounded in feminist theory, formal visual analysis, and retrospective cultural studies, this research argues that Sirani’s Timoclea exemplifies the Baroque’s strategic use of socially acceptable iconography to veil explicit challenges to gendered expectations. This …

The research explored how this specialized school structure supports Black boys' academic achievement, aspirations, and resilience—addressing longstanding disparities in educational and social outcomes. Through qualitative interviews with Black male alumni of 6–12 school models, the study identified factors within the design that positively influence self-efficacy both within and beyond the classroom. Findings indicated that sustained relationships with supportive teachers, a keen sense of brotherhood among peers, and consistent engagement …

Spiritual Practices In Survivor Care: A Qualitative Analysis Of Christian Faith-Based Shelters And Survivor Well-Being, Jeanne L. Allert Jul 2025

Spiritual Practices In Survivor Care: A Qualitative Analysis Of Christian Faith-Based Shelters And Survivor Well-Being, Jeanne L. Allert

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Christian faith-based organizations constituted a significant proportion of shelter programs for survivors of sex trafficking in the United States, with an estimated 63% identifying as Christian-affiliated (Institute for Survivor Care, 2024). Despite their prevalence, such programs often elicited skepticism due to the rise of secularism (Pew Research, 2022) and concerns that spiritual programming might retraumatize survivors (Ahrens et al., 2010; Hodge, 2020). However, Ahrens et al. (2010) and Hodge (2020) also found that religious practices can be helpful. This qualitative study employed a trauma-informed, descriptive survey design to explore the experiences of 158 trafficking survivors, who had either resided in …

Investigating The Threshold Of Opa1-Mediated Mitochondrial Fusion In Shsy5y Cells, Jorge Alberto Elizondo Jul 2025

Investigating The Threshold Of Opa1-Mediated Mitochondrial Fusion In Shsy5y Cells, Jorge Alberto Elizondo

Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondrial dynamics occurring under stress-induced conditions in SHSY5Y neuroblastoma cells provide insight into the OPA1-mediated mitochondrial fusion threshold in cells of varying energetic demands. Mitochondria are dynamic structures that are continuously balancing fusion and fission, depending on cellular needs. The ability to fuse and divide relies on the maintenance of the mitochondrial transmembrane potential. Stress-induced conditions in SHSY5Y cells were induced via utilization of carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP), a protonophore that disrupts the transmembrane potential. OMA1 protein reacts to the loss of transmembrane potential and subsequently cleaves the fusion-active isoforms of OPA1, L-OPA1. This causes an accumulation of S-OPA1, the …

Separate But Not Equal: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods Study Of Adjunct Structural Empowerment, Experiences, And Perceived Needs In A Midwestern Community College, Shauna Sowga

Theses and Dissertations

Higher education institutions are increasingly reliant on contingent or gig-based labor in the form of adjunct faculty. Adjunct faculty make up the majority of community college faculty, yet they tend to receive the least support, resources, and training investments from colleges. This is no different at Metro Community College, a large, urban college in the Midwest. The problem of practice for this study revolves around Metro Community College social sciences adjunct faculty’s needs for support, resources, and training to do their jobs effectively. This sequential explanatory mixed methods study examined these adjuncts’ structural empowerment, experiences, and perceived needs for support …

Different Ways To Broker: School Social Workers, Resource Distribution, And Equity For Immigrant Students, Benjamin J. Roth, Leticia Villarreal Sosa, Tasha Childs, Sophia Rodriguez

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

This study uses quantitative methods to explore the role of school social workers (SSWs) in promoting education equity for immigrant students. We focus on how SSWs act as resource brokers, connecting immigrant students to valuable resources both in schools and the wider community. Our analysis is based on data from a national survey of SSWs (N = 324). Through regression and multivariate analyses we find that a significant number of SSWs actively facilitate resource access for immigrant students. This often involves bridging the gap between teachers and immigrant parents. Notably, SSWs were more likely to engage in these brokerage …

From One Stolen Generation To Another: Replicating Trevorrow In American Courts, Jennifer Grubman Jul 2025

From One Stolen Generation To Another: Replicating Trevorrow In American Courts, Jennifer Grubman

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The note examines the historical injustices of Indian boarding schools in the United States and argues that survivors may assert fiduciary duty claims under the Indian Tucker Act to seek redress for the government’s mismanagement of tribal funds and the cultural trauma caused by these institutions. It critiques the lack of a nationwide reparations scheme and highlights the challenges posed by the statute of limitations in pursuing legal remedies. The analysis draws parallels to the Stolen Generations in Australia and emphasizes the need for a multifaceted approach to address the intergenerational harm inflicted by these policies.
