Ethnicizing Europe: Hate And Violence After Versailles, Éva Kovács, Raul Cârstocea, Gábor Egry Jul 2025

Ethnicizing Europe: Hate And Violence After Versailles, Éva Kovács, Raul Cârstocea, Gábor Egry

Central European Studies

Ethnicizing Europe focuses on the dynamics of interethnic violence in Europe between the two world wars. The new international system that was enshrined by the Versailles peace treaties after World War I did not bring stability to East-Central Europe. Rather, it resulted in a host of conditions like self-determination, international oversight, revolutionary political ideas, and democratic processes, which eventually gave new meaning to already established conflicts, as well as igniting new conflicts in the region. This book opens with a discussion of the theoretical scholarship on ethnicity before proceeding to specific case studies investigating the different ways in which ethnicity …

Can Mere Possession Of A Consumer Product Boast Your Self-Efficacy? : A Cultural Perspective, Yixuan Gao Jul 2025

Can Mere Possession Of A Consumer Product Boast Your Self-Efficacy? : A Cultural Perspective, Yixuan Gao

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Beggan (1992) introduced the mere ownership effect, suggesting that people evaluate owned objects more positively. Beggan argued that ownership fosters a psychological bond between people and their possessions, driven by self-enhancement motives (e.g., “I am good, thus my object must be good”). Yeung et al. (2017, 2020) extended the mere ownership effect, showing that ownership influences self-evaluations (e.g., I own a book so I am knowledgeable). Previous studies on the “person-based” mere ownership effect have primarily focused on East Asian participants. This thesis aims to compare cross-cultural differences, if any, in the “person-based” mere ownership effect (Study 1), and systematically …

Shoham: A Byzantine-Period Farmhouse (Monastery?) / שוהם: בית אחוזה (מנזר?) מן התקופה הביזנטית, Israel Kornfeld, Ayelet Dayan Jul 2025

Shoham: A Byzantine-Period Farmhouse (Monastery?) / שוהם: בית אחוזה (מנזר?) מן התקופה הביזנטית, Israel Kornfeld, Ayelet Dayan

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

Two salvage excavation seasons conducted in the center of the Ḥamanyot neighborhood in Shoham uncovered the remains of a large building, adjacent tombs, a complex winepress and several additional agricultural installations, all dating to the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods (sixth–eighth centuries CE). The building can be identified as either a large farmhouse or a monastery. Its solid walls, agricultural installations and small finds—such as fragments of glass windows, a marble chancel-screen column and a marble table leg likely from an offering table—all indicate the presence of a church at the site, supporting the interpretation that the building functioned as …

Ghost Highway: De-Touring Albuquerque's Route 66, Madison A. Garay Jul 2025

Ghost Highway: De-Touring Albuquerque's Route 66, Madison A. Garay

Art & Art History ETDs

Route 66 was a U.S. Numbered Highway stretching from Chicago, IL to Santa Monica, CA, rising to fame through music and popular culture. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Route 66 has a troublesome twin life as Central Avenue, a highly politicized space where bodies are contested. In this thesis, the function of public arts and architecture of Albuquerque’s main street thoroughfare, Central Avenue, will be analyzed as visual devices of U.S. Highway 66, or known in popular culture as “Route 66.” I employ a critical Derridean framework through Mark Fisher’s theorization of hauntology and Gerald Vizenor (White Earth Ojibwe)’s theory of …

Boricua En La Luna: An Ethnographic Case Study On The Spatializations Of Puerto Ricans In New Mexico, Neritza Díaz Cruz

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This ethnographic case study investigates the spatializations of Puerto Ricans in New Mexico, a state where the community is small, dispersed, and often invisible. The purpose of this study is to examine how Puerto Rican identity is shaped, expressed, and contested across New Mexican spaces. Drawing from critical spatial theory, this study investigates how broader structures such as language ideologies become spatialized in the everyday lives of five Puerto Rican adults living in the Albuquerque area. Data was gathered through interviews, observations, and participatory mapping. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data with a focus on how lived, perceived, …

Background

Little is known about arterial stiffness in rural subsistence populations that experience few cardiovascular risk factors. We conducted a cross‐sectional study comparing 3 arterial stiffness metrics among Tsimane forager‐horticulturalists with 2 representative US cohorts.

Methods

Arterial elasticity (the inverse of stiffness) markers C1 (large artery elasticity) and C2 (small artery elasticity) were measured using a tonometry device among 490 Tsimane adults (mean age, 51.2±10.1 years; 55% women), and compared with 6294 multiethnic US adults (mean age, 62.0±10.2 years; 52% women) from MESA (Multi‐Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). Carotid‐femoral pulse wave velocity was assessed using the foot‐to‐foot method in a smaller …

Global economic development has been associated with an increased prevalence of obesity and related health problems. Increased caloric intake and reduced energy expenditure are both cited as development-related contributors to the obesity crisis, but their relative importance remains unresolved. Here, we examine energy expenditure and two measures of obesity (body fat percentage and body mass index, BMI) for 4,213 adults from 34 populations across six continents and a wide range of lifestyles and economies, including hunter-gatherer, pastoralist, farming, and industrialized populations. Economic development was positively associated with greater body mass, BMI, and body fat, but also with greater total, basal, …

Evolving Leadership And Increased Wisdom – Understanding Ethical Leadership, Tangela Rutledge, Cam Caldwell Jul 2025

Evolving Leadership And Increased Wisdom – Understanding Ethical Leadership, Tangela Rutledge, Cam Caldwell

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Laying the foundation for understanding ethical leadership, we begin this paper by identifying a framework for understanding the leader’s roles based upon five dimensions for understanding leadership’s duties and responsibilities. We present a model for ethical decision making that addresses the complex factors of ethical decision-making based upon a virtuous continuum. We then review five levels of leadership identified by Jim Collins (2001) in his research about leaders – identifying the special significance of Level 5 leaders who enabled their companies to evolve from “Good” to “Great.” We describe the characteristics of leaders in each of Collins’ five leadership levels …

Television's Influence On Cultures Jul 2025

Television's Influence On Cultures

Communication Research Trends

It is widely assumed by the public, broadcasters and some communication researchers that television has caused major shifts in contemporary world view and values. McLuhan introduced the notion that the form of the medium itself- the simultaneous sound and vision - has brought about a new intuitive, holistic pattern of thinking. For McLuhan, the generation gap is the product of a television generation. Gerbner sees television as the central cultural arm of American society. Like a religion, it is the chief source of repetitive and ritualised symbol systems cultivating the consciousness of mass publics.

Others think that the process is …

Further research will be needed to improve our understanding of the mounds and the underlying geologic and biologic …

A Narrative Study Of How Secondary School Teachers Experience Generative Ai Writing Tools In The English Language Arts Classroom, Nick Brodell Jul 2025

A Narrative Study Of How Secondary School Teachers Experience Generative Ai Writing Tools In The English Language Arts Classroom, Nick Brodell

Doctor of Education (EdD)

With the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) programs such as ChatGPT commonplace in secondary English language arts (ELA) classrooms, scholars and practitioners are both curious and skeptical about the technology’s ability to help students improve their ELA skills. Teachers have been using tutoring software and Web 2.0 technologies for decades, yet AI writing tools offer new functionalities. Teachers and administrators have experiences engaging with the benefits and burdens of the technology, and scholars of composition pedagogy, ITS (intelligent tutoring systems), and ML (machine learning) have theories about students using it for skills acquisition and practice. This study collected and analyzed …

Comparison Of Leveling A Deep Curve Of Spee With Extractions Versus Non-Extraction: A Biomechanical Perspective, Mitchell James Muller Jul 2025

Comparison Of Leveling A Deep Curve Of Spee With Extractions Versus Non-Extraction: A Biomechanical Perspective, Mitchell James Muller

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: This study evaluated and compared orthodontic forces from different archwire designs and materials used to correct a deep curve of Spee. Methods: A three-dimensional orthodontic force tester (OFT) was used to measure forces and moments exerted by archwires on brackets from central incisors to first molars. Two setups were tested: one with a full dentition from central incisor to first molar, and another simulating bicuspid extractions with the first premolar removed. Dentoform models representing a deep curve of Spee were created using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data. The setup employed 0.022 × 0.028-inch zero-prescription brackets secured with elastomeric ligatures. …

Savoring The Seaweeds: Health And Sustainability Through Creole Foods, Roxanna Belleau Jul 2025

Savoring The Seaweeds: Health And Sustainability Through Creole Foods, Roxanna Belleau

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Incorporating kelp into American diets offers a promising avenue for enhancing nutrition and environmental sustainability. Despite its nutritional richness and ecological benefits as a "superfood" and carbon sink, cultural resistance presents a barrier to its widespread acceptance. This study delves into kelp's nutritional content and ecological advantages, exploring its potential to reshape dietary habits. Drawing insights from interviews and surveys, cultural norms emerge as a significant obstacle to kelp's integration into American cuisine. Strategies inspired by successful culinary adaptations, such as creole dishes, are proposed to navigate these challenges and shift societal perceptions. Furthermore, integrating kelp into familiar American foods …

Critical Reviews Of Advertising Jul 2025

Critical Reviews Of Advertising

Communication Research Trends

In the late 1950s and early 1960s a series of very influential thinkers began a strong movement of criticism of advertising. This questioning of advertising led to a deeper questioning of the 'cult of consumerism' which advertising propagates.

Vance Packard in his popular book, The Hidden Persuaders (1956) attacked advertising for using the techniques of depth psychology to raise 'subliminal anxieties' and manipulate desires for alcohol, cigarettes and other consumer items. John Kenneth Galbraith, in The Affluent Society (1958) pointed out that advertising was encouraging a wasteful consumerism which allowed a small portion of the world's people to use up …

Signifying The End Of Swidden? An Analysis Of Vocabulary Of The Fallow Stage Among A Kalimantan Indigenous Group, Indonesia, Syamsul Rijal, Muhammad Hasyim, Lukman Lukman, Ery Iswary

Forest and Society

This study examines how the Dayak Tunjung community in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, employs linguistic classifications to structure and transmit ecological knowledge within a traditional swidden agricultural system. It focuses on the vocabulary used to denote fallow stages and analyzes how generational shifts in language use reflect broader socio-ecological transformations. Data were collected through 16 semi-structured interviews and participant observation in Linggang Melapeh Village, stratified by age and occupation to capture intergenerational dynamics. The findings reveal that older generations retain a detailed lexicon tied to ecological succession and customary land practices, while younger members increasingly adopt shortened fallow cycles and show …

Nongovernmental Organizations In The Design And Implementation Of Social Forestry Programs In Indonesia: Interests, Power And Strategies, Arsad Ragandhi, Agus Heruanto Hadna, Setiadi Setiadi, Ahmad Maryudi

Forest and Society

Many social forestry projects have failed to produce expected outcomes. In many cases, they do not suit specific local contexts, problems, and needs because they only articulate the interests of powerful actors outside local communities. In this study, we examine how nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) affect social forestry implementation. In many cases, NGOs are characterized as benevolent actors, often claiming to represent voiceless groups, including poor local communities, in the social forestry context. We are specifically interested in analyzing the ways by which the studied NGOs have shaped the implementation of social forestry models in the forests managed by the state …

Rhythms For Living: Fluid Cultural Adaptations Within The Dynamic Watersheds Of Eastern Indonesia, Cynthia Twyford Fowler, Blajan Konradus, Sri Widinugraheni, Agustinus Gergorius Raja Dasion

Forest and Society

Tectonics literally and figuratively create rhythms for living in the seismically active nation of Indonesia where shifting plates generate landforms around which cultures construct their homelands. Eastern Indonesian communities who have built their societies around the region’s dynamic watersheds have constructed traditional ecological knowledge and place-based skills for accessing freshwater. What is the water-related knowledge and skills of Indigenous societies who live in the tropical monsoon climate zone of Nusa Tenggara Timur Province (NTT)? How have communities living on Sumba Island in southern NTT adapted to their homelands where they find water to pose the most difficult challenge to survival? …

The Enduring Relevance Of The Right To Strike: Arguments For Further Legal Protection And Regulatory Reform, Tonia Novitz, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey Vogt

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

In this thematic issue, the contributors demonstrate the past and contemporary relevance of a right to strike. Some authors do so with reference to the long-standing role that such an entitlement plays in protecting dignity, democracy, and other vital public interests. Attention is also paid to emerging contemporary issues, whereby the right to strike offers important leverage that would otherwise be absent, for example countering abusive treatment of those at work in global supply chain practices and the environmental degradation of the planet. They all conclude that, while it is possible to utilise existing legal protections of a right to …

One Health Policy Communities’ Perspectives On Zoonoses Risk Factors And Management: A Multiple Qualitative Methods Approach, Lisset M. Dumet, Erin Kenzie, Julia M. Goodman, Veronika Merino Osorio, Vanessa Cruz Chavez, Ruth Atto, Percy Vilchez Barreto, Seth O’Neal

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Zoonoses emergence and endemicity are serious global public health problems that disproportionately affect low-resource settings. One Health (OH) serves as a framework to understand the interconnection of zoonoses risk factors and incentivizes collaboration, coordination, and communication among sectors. However, OH encounters barriers related to power imbalances, gaps in coordination, and conflicts of interest among diverse communities of practice, which are groups that share a problem and domain of interest and engage in collective learning. This research aims to elucidate the mental models of policy communities, which are representations of the environment, and how humans explain and predict their surroundings to …

From Adjustment To Transformation: Applying An Evidence-Based Figure-8 Model To Guide Students Through Transformation Before, During, And After Study Abroad, Susan L. Ross, Lily A. House-Peters, Alison R. Holmes

csuglobalaction

The 23-campus California State University (CSU) system has an excellent record of sending students abroad and remains a champion of this high impact practice. Despite system-wide policies and Executive Orders that include requirements to promote pre-departure information sessions and support for returning students - gaps remain. This research argues that the popular models of culture adjustment no longer adequately frame the processes that students experience before, during, and after transformative (and potentially traumatic) study abroad. This is particularly the case for BIPOC, First Gen, undocumented/DACA, URM, and LGBTQ+ students who are increasingly represented in study abroad cohorts. The authors therefore …
