In this essay, we a collective of Indigenous, Black, and migrant Global South scholars engaged in experiments with the culture-centered approach (CCA) draw on our lived experiences amidst struggles against land grab, neoliberal extractivism, and capitalist exploitation to outline a framework for qualitative methods as anticolonial politics. We begin by exploring the interplays of colonialism, imperialism, and racial capitalism that have shaped the origins and uses of qualitative methods toward serving extractive agendas of global capital. This critique serves as the basis for outlining the key principles of the CCA, turning to voice, storytelling, and embodied action as the basis …

Background New metrics of household water insecurity have been validated for low- to middle-income countries, but it is unclear how these measurements apply to the experiences of people living in high-income countries. This project aims to develop and validate a novel metric for household water insecurity experiences in the United States (HWISE-USA) using a cross-sectional design and data from the Southwest, Midwest, and Western regions. Methods We outline the protocol for the development and validation of a novel household water insecurity scale for the United States to address this scientific need, including the following key steps: (1) item development through …

ED crowding and boarding adversely impact older patients' care and outcomes. Little is known about how ED crowding impacts persons living with dementia, a vulnerable population. This study sought to explore ED experiences of caregivers of people with dementia during a period of ED crowding and boarding. We performed semi-structured interviews with caregivers of people with dementia with an ED visit during a period of ED crowding and boarding at two public hospitals experiencing a threefold increase in boarding from pre-pandemic levels. Participants were recruited via chart review. We coded data using an inductive approach. Three themes emerged from 29 …

Background: Several strategies have been proposed to increase chronic cognitive impairment (CI) screening in the emergency department (ED). Our goal was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of implementing specific CI screening tools and strategies in the ED from an ED registered nurse and technician perspective.

Methods: We performed a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of ED nurses and ED technicians (EDTs). Participants worked at an urban academic hospital and were interviewed between November 2023 and March 2024. Interviews assessed participants' opinions on the feasibility and acceptability of CI screening and the use of machine learning …

Comparison Of Psychological Data Between Populations, A Measurement Perspective, Ype H. Poortinga, Hester Van Herk, Johnny Fontaine Aug 2025

Comparison Of Psychological Data Between Populations, A Measurement Perspective, Ype H. Poortinga, Hester Van Herk, Johnny Fontaine

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

In cross-cultural psychology there is a strong tradition of psychometric analysis of bias and invariance (equivalence) after collection of data in distinct populations with identical instruments developed in one population. This implies a focus on measurement outcomes and an operationalist orientation to science. Here we explore how a focus on joint development and content validity of instruments combined with relaxation of the demand of item identity can provide an additional perspective. Three points are addressed:(1) Any comparison between participants from two, or more, populations presumes a common quality (property, attribute) and requires a common measurement scale, a “standard of comparison”. …

From Shudu [Sudoku 數獨] To Dushu [Learning Of Mathematics 讀數]?, Man Keung Siu

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The puzzle game Sudoku has been popular for over two decades, and even at one time became a craze for the public. This paper will briefly describe what the game is, a little bit of its history, and how to play it, but will leave the details to the many published books about the game. Some interesting and difficult mathematical problems relevant to the game will be highlighted, again leaving the detailed discussion to specific books published on this issue. The main point the paper tries to focus on is a discussion on the cognitive and the psychological aspects of …

Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk Jul 2025

Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk

Interiority

Interior design has traditionally prioritised human experiences, often neglecting ecological and nonhuman perspectives on interiority. This anthropocentric focus limits the discipline's ability to address the spatial and sensory needs of nonhuman persons, including teleost fishes. It overlooks interiority as a universal and relational phenomenon shared by all living beings. This research challenges these boundaries by proposing a biosemiotic framework that integrates the body, interiority, and inhabitation as interdependent constructs shaped by physiological, mental, and environmental interactions. By developing Jakob von Uexküll's (1982) biosemiotic schema, the study investigates the sentient experiences of teleost fishes to establish interiority as a capability inherent …

Influences Of The Western Press On News Framing Of Global Events In Developing Countries: Examining Covid-19 And Climate Coverage In A Bangladeshi News Organization, Arif Md Tareque Habib Jul 2025

Influences Of The Western Press On News Framing Of Global Events In Developing Countries: Examining Covid-19 And Climate Coverage In A Bangladeshi News Organization, Arif Md Tareque Habib

Communication ETDs

This study shows that a small number of Western news organizations (e.g., Reuters, The New York Times) may influence how local news organizations in developing countries frame global crises and that this influence may lead local news organizations to ignore locally relevant aspects of those crises. To test this thesis, two studies were conducted on the coverage of two crises -- COVID-19 and climate change -- by a news organization in Bangladesh, a developing country in South Asia. The news organization, www.bdnews24.com, serves both as a news agency or news supplier for local newspapers and an online newspaper for users. …

Flex-Spatialities: Interior Spaces, Play, And Fantasy, Camilo Lozano-Rivera Jul 2025

Flex-Spatialities: Interior Spaces, Play, And Fantasy, Camilo Lozano-Rivera

Interiority

This article examines how interior spaces in the digital age have evolved into flexible, adaptive environments shaped by technological mediation and shifting everyday practices. Focusing on smart homes and home offices, this article introduces the concept of flex-spatiality to describe how these spaces continually reconfigure in response to changes in needs and digital interfaces. Grounded in Gregory Bateson’s (1972) theory of play and fantasy, the study explores how interior spatiality operates on two levels: as a locus for expressing identities and as a structure for organising social interaction. Through Bateson’s distinction between metalinguistic and metacommunicative functions, flex-spatiality is framed as …

Will There Be A Pill For That? ‘Money Dysmorphia’ And The Medicalization Of Struggles For Subsistence, Bojan Savic Jul 2025

Will There Be A Pill For That? ‘Money Dysmorphia’ And The Medicalization Of Struggles For Subsistence, Bojan Savic

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This article questions the rationality, operation, and effects of money dysmorphia as an emerging mental health diagnosis. It critiques the medicalization of financial angst amid the capitalist “polycrisis”, showing how the individuation and somatic pathologization of class subordination, socioeconomic precarity, and struggles for subsistence obscure capitalist inequalities, depoliticize them, and shield them from critique. I identify five concurrent strategies through which struggles for subsistence are medicalized: trivialization, reversal of social import, repetition, direct depoliticization, and the substitution of inequality with poverty. Furthermore, I show how the medicalizing discourse reifies money dysmorphia by constructing its social costs. The article concludes by …

Progress And Regression, Modernity And Social Evolution, José Maurício Domingues Jul 2025

Progress And Regression, Modernity And Social Evolution, José Maurício Domingues

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

This paper deals with progress and evolution. Regarding progress, it in particular critically engages with recent works (Wagner, Allen, Jaeggi), arguing that we need a more assertive perspective. Our immersion in an evolutionarily and contingently created but globally established (modern) imaginary is found to underpin that more assertive perspective of progress. To articulate its perspective more generally, the paper draws upon a former elaboration on evolutionary homology and homoplasy regarding power. Thereby it tackles the development of morals/ethics, leading to a discussion of progress – and regression – including but going beyond material and cognitive issues. It grapples with evolutionary …

The Regulations Of Social Meaning In The Digital Platform Era, Peter O'Loughlin Jul 2025

The Regulations Of Social Meaning In The Digital Platform Era, Peter O'Loughlin

Akron Law Review

The regulation of social meaning has traditionally been subjected to rational choice theory (RCT) perspectives in an age when the internet and technology were in nascent stages of development. Today, social meaning is being regulated in much more subtle but powerful ways by digital platforms who are leveraging behavioral economic (BE) insights to control, dictate, and reshape the social meaning of a variety of social roles, conduct, objects, and events. Whilst this form of social government (or private ordering of society’s social fabric) has obvious and desirable benefits to recalibrating society as a collective and assuaging or reversing the stereotyping …

The Gendered Digital Divide: G20 Initiatives For Gender Equality, Inclusion, And Sustainability, Tinuade A. Ojo, Mobolanle E. Sotunsa, Diana J. Fox, Karen Carpenter, Leith L. Dunn

Journal of International Women's Studies

The gendered digital divide remains a pressing global issue that undermines efforts toward gender equality, inclusive growth, and sustainable development. Despite progress in technological access and innovation, women, particularly in the Global South, continue to face systemic barriers to digital inclusion, from limited internet connectivity and affordability issues to unequal participation in STEM and digital economy sectors. This policy brief calls on the G20 to lead in narrowing the gendered digital divide by promoting equitable access to digital tools, enhancing women’s digital literacy, supporting gender-responsive technological design, and ensuring online safety. The recommendations herein provide a roadmap for governments, international …

Exploring Open Pedagogy Principles: A Qualitative Study Of Undergraduate Experiences, Staci Gilpin, Stephanie Rollag Yoon, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Open pedagogy, characterisedby students creating or co-creating artefacts that others may use, offers transformative opportunities for students to move beyond passive learning into active content creation. This qualitative study examines the experiences of 25 undergraduate students who engage with open pedagogy principles, including creation-centred learning, collaboration, audience engagement, and the integration of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Creative Commons (CC) licensing. Using surveys and interviews, we identified three key themes: the importance of real audiences, authentic connections over prescribed collaborations, and rethinking the role of Creative Commons. Findings suggest that open pedagogy enhances student engagement and provides meaningful, real-world applications …

Postpartum Experiences Of Arab Women And The Educational Role Of The Mother, Diana Ikki Jul 2025

Postpartum Experiences Of Arab Women And The Educational Role Of The Mother, Diana Ikki

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Women in the Arab world traditionally observe a 40-day postpartum rest period, during which they rest, follow specific rituals, and learn to care for their newborn under the guidance and care of a family matriarch, typically their mother. Despite the prevalence of this practice, there is limited empirical research exploring the educational role of Arab mothers during their daughters' postpartum period; this qualitative study addressed this gap. Foundational to this study’s theoretical framework was Ramona Mercer’s theory of maternal role attainment. The study addressed two research questions: how Arab women describe their postpartum experiences and the educational role their mothers …

Social Capital And Mobility Of Starling Madura Coffee Traders In Jakarta, Yeni Priana, Manneke Budiman Jul 2025

Social Capital And Mobility Of Starling Madura Coffee Traders In Jakarta, Yeni Priana, Manneke Budiman

International Review of Humanities Studies

This study aims to generate knowledge about the social capital underlying the resilience of Starling Madura coffee traders in Jakarta. The idea that underlies this analysis is Bourdieu's social capital theory, in which social capital formed through networks is able to provide independence in overcoming social and economic problems. In addition to social capital, mobility strategies are utilized as opportunities by Starling Madura coffee traders in an effort to survive sustainably in the context of the informal economic order in Jakarta. This study provides data and analysis that strengthen the idea that Starling Madura coffee traders adopt distinctive social capital …

Life-Course And Biography Of Things: Minangkabau Women's Headgear, Attari Putri Denendra, Irmawati Marwoto Jul 2025

Life-Course And Biography Of Things: Minangkabau Women's Headgear, Attari Putri Denendra, Irmawati Marwoto

International Review of Humanities Studies

Like men, objects also have a biography or life-course. Both biographies are intertwined, so when someone experiences a new life phase transition in their life-course, it will cause changes in the objects attached to them. This is also supported by the statement that the identity is performative. The headgear as one of the elements used by Minangkabau women also represents the identity of the wearer. This research was conducted in three stages: (1) data collection in the form of old photos and literature of Minangkabau women with headgear in Batipuh, Fort de Kock, and Payakumbuh, (2) data processing by analysis …

Fathers’ Experiences With Reunification With The Massachusetts Child Welfare System, Phernel Joseph Manigat Jul 2025

Fathers’ Experiences With Reunification With The Massachusetts Child Welfare System, Phernel Joseph Manigat

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study focused on fathers’ experiences with the Massachusetts child welfare system (MCWS) or the Department of Children and Families (DCF) during the reunification process with their children, particularly those fathers who received sole custody of their children during this process. Researchers have demonstrated that fathers are minimally engaged and mostly ignored in the child welfare system (CWS). A research gap was identified regarding the experiences of fathers who received sole custody of their children through the CWS. The purpose of this study was to explore these fathers’ experiences with the MCWS or the DCF during the reunification process with …
