Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas Apr 2019

Commercial Fishers’ Perspectives On Revitalizing The Fishing Industry In Coastal Georgia, Julia Thomas

Honors College Theses

Competition from imported seafood, low product prices, increasing operation costs, and other socio-economic factors are negatively affecting coastal Georgia’s commercial fishing industry. Fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) is extensive and gives them unique perspectives into the problems the industry is facing. Their perspectives differ from those of biologists or policymakers, making them useful for implementing good management policies that not only consider the scientific knowledge of a fishery, but the human aspect as well. This thesis used conducted semi-structured and card-sorting interviews with commercial Georgia fishermen in two fishing communities to learn about the problems they face and their unique …

Who Is Baby Girl? A Philosophical Discussion Of The Legal Obligation To Define Authenticity, Madison Hayes Apr 2019

Who Is Baby Girl? A Philosophical Discussion Of The Legal Obligation To Define Authenticity, Madison Hayes

Honors College Theses

In the later twentieth century, American law attempted to address legacies of unjust treatment of Native Americans though legislation like the Indian Child Welfare Act, which requires considering Native American identity in child custody decisions. This created some complex legal questions about exactly what constituted Native identity. The Supreme Court case, Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl, exposed a number of problems that arose from determining authentic tribal identity. To offer a more precise analysis of the problem of identity in American law, I will engage in philosophical investigations into the nature of authenticity, bringing in the work of the …

The Essence Of The Teaching/Learning Process: An Exploration Of The Perspectives And Lived Experiences Of University Spanish Language Teaching Assistants, Sarah Schulman Apr 2019

The Essence Of The Teaching/Learning Process: An Exploration Of The Perspectives And Lived Experiences Of University Spanish Language Teaching Assistants, Sarah Schulman

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

U.S. schools are emblematic of the increasingly linguistic and cultural diversity present in this country. Despite this well-documented shift, U.S. foreign language teacher education programs have yet to align learning outcomes with the cognitive and affective needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students. Providing educators with opportunities to learn about and prepare for the needs of these students is essential, but this alone will not address the essence of the underlying problem. If foreign language teacher education programs are to evolve, a deeper understanding of the teaching/learning process is critical.

In response to this need, this qualitative study explored how …

Poets, Pioneers, Sci Fi Authors And Arctic Explorers: Deaccessioning Audiovisual Materials In The Archives, Lisa E. Duncan, Trent Purdy Apr 2019

Poets, Pioneers, Sci Fi Authors And Arctic Explorers: Deaccessioning Audiovisual Materials In The Archives, Lisa E. Duncan, Trent Purdy

Journal of Western Archives

In 2017 the University of Arizona Libraries Special Collections (UALSC) conducted a survey of audiovisual materials in its collections. The Multimedia Archivist collected data on the content, quantity, format and condition of these materials. Deaccessioning collections was not a practice UALSC had routinely implemented in the past. However with the additional information collected during this survey obvious candidates for deaccessioning arose. The Multimedia Archivist was concerned about the long term preservation of these collections so it was imperative that UALSC take action. The backlog for the reformatting of audiovisual materials was large and the budget limited. The collections identified for …

Not Just For “That Kind Of Mom”: An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Perceived Benefits Of Childbirth Doulas In Rochester, New York, Kaitlyn Morgan Apr 2019

Not Just For “That Kind Of Mom”: An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Perceived Benefits Of Childbirth Doulas In Rochester, New York, Kaitlyn Morgan

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Since the origin of childbirth, a female attendant has accompanied a woman in labor. As time progressed, these attendants began to receive special training, and became professionally known as doulas. The twentieth century has brought an increasing demand for highly medicalized birth practices, with hospital births and caesarian sections at an all-time high. The ability of a woman’s body to naturally have a baby has been overshadowed by these practices, forcing many women to feel it is necessary to seek these methods in order to have a safe birth. This ultimately creates a realm of fear surrounding childbirth in America. …

Kill Or Be Killed: Seeing The Middle East As A Threat To The Western World, Katherine Zaslavsky Apr 2019

Kill Or Be Killed: Seeing The Middle East As A Threat To The Western World, Katherine Zaslavsky

Proceedings of GREAT Day

In the context of Middle Eastern conflict, fear is a powerful tool that can sway Western opinion for or against certain causes, as seen through the use of framing. Even outside of fear’s overt usage in the media, narratives tend to separate the West from the Middle East. The presence of these narratives, and the extent of this presence, is indicative of increasingly divisive relations between the West and the Middle East, driven by fear of alien peoples. This research identified, defined, and analyzed the frames used in American broadcast television coverage of the Arab–Israeli conflict and Islamic acts of …

Making And Firing Hopewell Pottery, Kara James Apr 2019

Making And Firing Hopewell Pottery, Kara James

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Between 200 BCE and 500 CE, Hopewell culture was flourishing across much of Eastern North America. They were living in dispersed sedentary households, and engaging in low-level food production, however, they are best known for building the large conglomerations of earthworks and mounds scattered across the Ohio Valley. Their impressive mounds have been excavated and documented, but not much is known about the domestic lives of these people. As archaeologists have started excavating Ohio Hopewell domestic sites, they have noticed that pottery not only is important in their burials, but also plays an important role in their daily lives as …

Reflections On The Matriarchs’ Orchard: An Alternative Understanding Of Jewish Women And Environmentalism, Arielle Aronoff

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Herbal medicine, native ecological design, and Judaism come together in a study that explores the links between women and natural healing. This presentation will focus on my experience as an intern at Kayam Farm, a Jewish Educational Farm in Reisterstown, Maryland. The history of the four Hebrew Matriarchs, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and Leah, is steeped with trials and tribulations, celebrations and tradition. My internship allowed for me to explore this history and develop an herbal guide to the Matriarchs Orchard. The orchard has been planted as a space for women to celebrate the cycles of life. Our implementation of the …

Front And Center: An Anthropological Analysis Of Drag Queens In American Culture, Seth Palmer Apr 2019

Front And Center: An Anthropological Analysis Of Drag Queens In American Culture, Seth Palmer

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Judith Butler’s concept of gender performativity revolutionized the way that academics conceive of gender, and has subsequently become a critical perspective for feminist and queer analyses in a variety of disciplines. The new anthropology of genders and sexualities uses this theoretical framework and focuses specifically on “institutions of ambiguity” that challenge gender dichotomies across the globe. Such institutions highlight the importance of understanding gendered and sexualized categorizations as cultural constructions embedded in a specific historical, spatial and cultural context. Continuing in that tradition, this paper is an examination of drag queens in contemporary American culture, with a specific focus on …

Faculty Lead Classroom Equity Initiatives Across Campus, Julia Rubin

Featured News Story

For the last 400 years that higher education institutions have existed in North America, they have mainly served white men. Even after they started to accept women and people of color – for most that occurred just within the last century – the curriculum, teaching practices and faculty of many institutions still reflect this history.

Oxygen And Hydrogen Isotopes In Human Hair And Tap Water: Modeling Relationships In A Modern Mexican Population, Chelsey A. Juarez, Robin Ramey, David T. Flaherty, Belinda Akpa

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

This study investigates the relationship between O and H isotopes in samples of Mexican hair and drinking water. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, we wanted to quantify the relationship between isotopes in Mexican hair and tap water to understand the impact of water stress and differing socioeconomic status on accurate predictions of drinking water. Second, we wanted to determine whether currently existing semi mechanistic models could accurately represent the relationship between hair and tap water. For this study, we used a subset of paired (N = 62) human hair and (N = 76) tap water samples. Isotope …

Attributes Of Effective Teachers, Michele Charles Apr 2019

Attributes Of Effective Teachers, Michele Charles

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

In response to a large observable population of disengaged and bored students in urban high school classrooms, the purpose of this study was to identify the attributes of effective teachers, and their instructional strategies that have led to student success. By identifying and exposing teacher efficacy to other teachers at professional development seminars, and sharing inspirational and instructional strategies used by effective teachers, the rate of student success, as measured by student engagement and performance in classrooms, may increase. Research participants were teachers from two different urban high schools on the same inner-city campus. They served the same student demographic …

Age-At-Death Estimation For Modern Populations In Mexico And Puerto Rico Through The Use Of 3d Laser Scans Of The Pubic Symphysis, Cristina Figueroa Soto, Bridget F.B. Algee-Hewitt, Guillermo Bravo Morante, Dennis E. Slice, Dawnie W. Steadman

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Reliable age-at-death estimates from the adult skeleton is of fundamental importance in forensic anthropology, as it contributes to the identity parameters used in a medico-legal death investigation. However, reliable estimates are made difficult by the fact that many traditional aging methods are dependent upon a set of population-specific criteria derived from individuals of European and African descent. The absence of information on the potential differences in the aging patterns of underrepresented, especially Hispanic populations, may hinder our efforts to produce useful age-at-death estimates. In response to these concerns, this study explores the utility of currently available aging techniques, and explores …

Women Of The Edward J. Gay Family As Textile And Dress Consumers In Louisiana, 1849-1899, Lindsay Danielle Reaves Apr 2019

Women Of The Edward J. Gay Family As Textile And Dress Consumers In Louisiana, 1849-1899, Lindsay Danielle Reaves

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Economic, social, and cultural historians have studied and analyzed consumption behaviors throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century. Decorative household textiles and dress items are two product categories that follow the consumption process. American consumption behaviors during the introduction of mass-produced textiles and dress items throughout the 19th century have not been well documented.

The purpose of this research is to expand the knowledge of Southern planter-class women’s consumer behavior in relation to decorative household textiles and dress items. Arnould and Thompson’s (2005) Consumer Culture Theory and Belk’s (1988) research into possessions and the extended …
