Determinants Of Ethnic Retention As See Through Walloon Immigrants To Wisconsin, Jacqueline Lee Tinkler
Determinants Of Ethnic Retention As See Through Walloon Immigrants To Wisconsin, Jacqueline Lee Tinkler
History Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation examines the unusually enduring retention of ethnic culture of the Walloon Belgian immigrants who settled in northeastern Wisconsin between 1853 and 1857, as well as the combination of circumstances which enabled this ethnic island to form and continue, well into the twenty-first century. A review of the historiography focusing on European immigrants to the United States from the post-revolutionary period to the present reveals an emphasis on urban settlement and the assumed inevitability of the weakening of ethnic identity. Less attention has been given those immigrants settling in rural areas and even less to those few rural immigrant …

Relationship Between Peer Tutoring Hours, Letter Grades, Gpa, Ethnicity And Other Variables, Aman Bhardwaj
2019 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This project is about exploring the relationship between tutoring hours and GPA along with other variables like ethnicity, year in college, gender and major. Peer-based tutoring data from University Tutorial and Supplement Instruction at The University of Texas at Arlington was used to do this research. Data from Spring 2017 through Fall 2018 was used for this research. Statistical tools were used to this research to come up with a difference-indifference model using different variables. Interaction terms between different variables were used to explore the data that was used. Through regression analysis it was found that tutoring hours do have …
Black Students’ Perceptions Of Campus Climate At A Racially Mixed Institution, Melissa Ann Brown
Black Students’ Perceptions Of Campus Climate At A Racially Mixed Institution, Melissa Ann Brown
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
Black students are not persisting to degree completion at the same rate as White students. While research about Black students’ experiences at predominately White institutions (PWI) and historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) is ample, more research is needed on racially mixed institutions (RMIs), where white students make up less than 40% of the student population. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of campus climate of eight Black students attending one RMI in the Southwestern United States. Using the Modified Mutual Acculturation theory as a lens, this qualitative phenomenological study revealed the experiences of these …
Effects Of Latino Parental Involvement In Their Children’S Academics, Sonia Gutierrez
Effects Of Latino Parental Involvement In Their Children’S Academics, Sonia Gutierrez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Parental involvement is a large factor in a child’s life. It has been around for many years and has been interconnected with students’ academic achievement regardless of race and socioeconomic status. Research indicates that Latino parents are less involved in their children’s academics due to their personal definition of parental involvement. However, Latino parents really want to get involved in their children’s education, but there are barriers that limit the type of parental involvement they exhibit. Teachers and administrators value parental involvement and try to encourage all parents to participate but at times do not understand the struggles some Latino …
Anthropogenic Landscapes Of Amazonia : A Spatial Analysis Of Landscape Modification And Settlement Organization At Macurany, Brazil., M. Grace Ellis
Anthropogenic Landscapes Of Amazonia : A Spatial Analysis Of Landscape Modification And Settlement Organization At Macurany, Brazil., M. Grace Ellis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic landscapes are the product of complex human-environment processes that form distinct features in the landscape, which materially preserve and reflect human behavior. Anthropogenic landscapes in Amazonia likely date back to human colonization of the region around 16,000 BP. Since colonization, humans have been marking, modifying, managing, and engineering the landscape resulting in a mosaic of anthropogenic landscape features across Amazonia. The diversity of ancient landscapes documented in Amazonia reflects the cultural heterogeneity that existed in the past. This research explores the complex human-environmental processes that form distinct, identifiable, lasting features on the landscape and what these features can illuminate …
The Effect Of Ethnic Identity On Biblical Unity In Its Role As An Apologetic, Caroline Boozer
The Effect Of Ethnic Identity On Biblical Unity In Its Role As An Apologetic, Caroline Boozer
Masters Theses
This thesis will consider the effect that ethnicity has on identity formation as it impacts church unity. Unity is the chief form of evidence by which the Christian church is supposed to be recognized. The way that believers love one another is how Jesus teaches people will know that they are His disciples (John 13:35). Ethnic tensions are a cause of disunity in both the Old and New Testaments. The issue of ethnic identity and relations and the impact that they have on unity in the church is an apologetic for the power and counter-cultural teachings of Jesus. The purpose …

The U.S. Foreclosure Crisis And Racial Change In The American South, Jermaine Marquise Durham
The U.S. Foreclosure Crisis And Racial Change In The American South, Jermaine Marquise Durham
All Dissertations
Despite the global impacts of the U.S. foreclosure crisis, research on how this event has shaped processes of neighborhood change at the local level is relatively limited. Although the immediate neighborhood impacts of the U.S. foreclosure crisis have been well documented, the long-term influences this historic event had on processes of racial succession is yet to be fully understood. Even less research has focused on how the foreclosure crisis influenced racial transitions in small to mid-sized cities in the American South. Using both quantitative and geographical analytic techniques, this multi-case study seeks to analyze the spatial distribution of foreclosures in …
Late-Victorian Novels, Microsociology, And Bad Dialogue, Amy Wong
Late-Victorian Novels, Microsociology, And Bad Dialogue, Amy Wong
English and Creative Writing | Faculty Scholarship
This essay argues that a separation between dialogue and talk has been enforced since the rejection of mimetic realism in the late nineteenth-century art of fiction debates. Both the institutionalization of formalist methods and poststructuralism since Derrida have resulted, moreover, in continued suspicion about ontological claims made about any category of "orality." Yet what has been lost in the name of poststructuralist sophistication is an appreciation of talk as an embodied, relational, and sociologically mediated form. This essay contends that revisiting dialogue with a view toward such elements—from gestures and other physiological productions to "invisible" social dynamics—unfolds ethical dimensions of …
A Qualitative Study Of The Experience Of Miscarriage From Patients And Providers In The Rural U.S., Rebecca L. Upton
A Qualitative Study Of The Experience Of Miscarriage From Patients And Providers In The Rural U.S., Rebecca L. Upton
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications
This qualitative study examines how female patients in rural communities in the Midwest, who experienced at least one miscarriage, perceived their experience of pregnancy loss. Qualitative data were collected from 10 women who did experience at least one loss in addition to 10 participants who were providers or partners of the women were interviewed. The Socio-Ecological model informed the methodology and thematic analysis. Open-ended qualitative interviews provided the basis for the analysis. Transcribed narrative data were analyzed using standard coding procedures and MAXQDA software. Women who experienced miscarriage discussed how they made meaning of the experience within the context of …
Modern European Culture And The Making Of Beyond Good And Evil, Jaryth Webber
Modern European Culture And The Making Of Beyond Good And Evil, Jaryth Webber
History Theses - Archive
Modern European Culture and the Making of Beyond Good and Evil offers a historical picture of nineteenth-century European culture by means of examining one of its chief artifacts, Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil, in effect “seeing” European culture through Nietzsche’s “most dangerous book.” Beyond Good and Evil contained Nietzsche’s clearest attack on the foundations of what will be called “national imaginaries,” decisive historically for cultural changes, shooting questions about both the “nation” and those “clinging” to it. Likewise, the book also provided an analysis of the emergent “supranational” peoples of Europe that were in need of a transnational cultural …
Balancing The Theoretical Toolkit: A Quantitative Examination Of Social Mobility And Culture, Nathan Cole Baggett
Balancing The Theoretical Toolkit: A Quantitative Examination Of Social Mobility And Culture, Nathan Cole Baggett
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
Stratification researchers of the last four decades have contributed a multitude of information on how class-origins, culture, and social psychological factors affect class reproduction. However, scholarship has spent comparatively less effort in exploring cultural elements that can facilitate upward mobility for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. This thesis addresses this research imbalance through providing a nuanced look at cultural, social, and economic factors associated with educational mobility. Specifically, I investigate how educational aspirations offset financial constraints for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. I employ regression analyses to examine how common educational mobility is for individuals from less-educated households and then test to …
Sustainable Dietary Solutions To A Multi-Dimensional Epidemic: A Practical Application Of The Mediterranean Diet To Nebraska, Samuel A. Virgillito
Sustainable Dietary Solutions To A Multi-Dimensional Epidemic: A Practical Application Of The Mediterranean Diet To Nebraska, Samuel A. Virgillito
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
There is substantial evidence to suggest the major health and environmental benefits of the Mediterranean diet. When compared to the Western Pattern diet, the Mediterranean diet consistently ranks higher by both of these measures. Considering a looming environmental crisis and an already present health epidemic, a major dietary shift and overhaul of the current food system in America is necessary. Yet few studies aim to suggest the transferability of the Mediterranean diet to regions outside of the Mediterranean basin. Nebraska offers a unique case study as it reflects the contextually poor health of Americans and boasts a massive agriculture industry …

A Needs Analysis To Inform Global Humanitarian Capacity Building, Jeroen Breman, Lisa A. Giacumo, Rachel Griffith-Boyes
Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article describes a needs analysis case study to inform the instructional design of a multinational capacity building project in humanitarian logistics. Survey responses from 106 foreign partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) were collected to gain insights into organizations’ access to technology, levels of confidence in five logistics process areas, the strengths of previous capacity building projects, and organizational strategies and methods for capacity building. Results show that staff have access to mobile phones and computers and prefer to use the latter for learning. It was also found that not all NGOs implemented all the common …

Domestic Deathcare: The Effect Of Home Funerals On The Grieving Process, Eva Pitsch
Domestic Deathcare: The Effect Of Home Funerals On The Grieving Process, Eva Pitsch
Counselor Education Capstones
In the United States, there is a growing movement towards home and alternative funeral practices. Little is known about how this shift might impact the grief process. In order to understand the contemporary home funeral movement, it is important to examine pivotal moments in the history of funerals in America—like the Civil War, Industrial Revolution and the popularization of the genteel code. Additionally, research on grief and funerals provides general context and insight on the influence of funeral rituals on mourning. Though much of the literature on conventional funerals and family’s responses to loss apply to alternative deathcare, there is …

Local Community Influences On Interpretation At Historical Sites And Museums, Jason Fitzgerald
Local Community Influences On Interpretation At Historical Sites And Museums, Jason Fitzgerald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"Local Community Influences on Interpretation at Historical Sites and Museums" is an analysis in how interpretations of historical content are chosen for visitors and to what degree local communities contribute to this decision process. What determines which stories and historical narratives are presented at historical sites and museums? Is the process of determining how to interpret historical events as simple as relating the event to the time and place that corresponds with that particular site? Is it possible that public historical sites and museums reflect the social values and points of interests of the local communities rather than accepted and …
From The Temple To The Synagogue: Exploring Changes In Judaism After The Fall Of The Second Temple, Adam Cohen
From The Temple To The Synagogue: Exploring Changes In Judaism After The Fall Of The Second Temple, Adam Cohen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
"From the Temple to the Synagogue" is an analysis on the influence of external cultures, predominantly the Persian religion of Zoroastrianism on the early rabbis following their failed revolt against Rome and the destruction of the Second Temple in the first century CE. How did the Jewish people react to the upheaval of their center of worship? What can we attribute to the major changes in their religious literature and centers of worship following the demise of their rebellion? Is it possible that what has traditionally been seen as an isolated and uniform group of people did in fact borrow …

Immodest Empowerment: Disjunction Between The Development Agenda And Lived Experiences Of "Women's Land Rights" In Southeastern Gujarat, Nhi Hoang Thuc Nguyen
Immodest Empowerment: Disjunction Between The Development Agenda And Lived Experiences Of "Women's Land Rights" In Southeastern Gujarat, Nhi Hoang Thuc Nguyen
Sociology and Anthropology Honors Theses
Since the 1990s, giving women land rights has been a part of international development organizations’ agenda to empower the so-called “Third World woman.” Development organizations generalize women’s land rights as a cultural and local/state patriarchy issue, and to have “land rights” mostly means to have a documented titling to their family’s private agricultural land. Based on one month of fieldwork with the Vasava women in southeastern Gujarat, this thesis exposes the limits of this gender-based and property-based narrative in explaining the experiences of tribal women and land issues. It argues that the supranational development organizations’ framework around “women’s land rights” …
Who Studies International Law? Explaining Cross-National Variation In Compulsory International Legal Education, Ryan Scoville, Mark S. Berlin
Who Studies International Law? Explaining Cross-National Variation In Compulsory International Legal Education, Ryan Scoville, Mark S. Berlin
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
The compulsory study of international law is a universal component of legal education in some states but extremely uncommon or non-existent in others. This article uses global data and statistical methods to test a number of conceivable explanations for this puzzling feature of international society. In contrast to much of the empirical literature on state behaviour in relation to international law, we find that functionalist and socio-political variables carry little explanatory power and that historical variables – specifically, legal tradition and regional geography – instead account for the overwhelming majority of the global pattern. We explore potential explanations for these …
Underground Railroads And Coyote Conductors: Brokering Clandestine Passages, Then And Now, Noelle K. Brigden
Underground Railroads And Coyote Conductors: Brokering Clandestine Passages, Then And Now, Noelle K. Brigden
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
This article juxtaposes the Underground Railroad with contemporary Central American smuggling practices. Activists in the US Sanctuary Movement, seeking to provide safe passage to the USA for Central American refugees, summon the legacy of the Underground Railroad as a normative frame for understanding their mission. In the original Underground Railroad, a loose network of ‘conductors’ ushered escaped slaves north to freedom. In contrast to immigrant rights activists and slavery abolitionists, for-profit smugglers have been vilified as violent predators. Nevertheless, surprising similarities in social practices and relationships that underpin such dramatically different cases of migration brokerage point to the contingencies, complexities …
Detection Of Larval Aggregations Using A Drone Mounted Thermal Imaging Camera, Megan Descalzi
Detection Of Larval Aggregations Using A Drone Mounted Thermal Imaging Camera, Megan Descalzi
Master's Theses
When a body’s temperature reaches ambient temperature after death, remote detection of the body can become difficult. At this point, useful search tactics include the use of cadaver dogs, search parties and aerial imaging devices, all of which can be costly and time-consuming for every day law enforcement use. This study investigated the potential of a novel search technique in which a small, unmanned aerial system (drone) mounted with a forward-looking infrared radar (FLIR) was utilized to detect decomposing animal carcasses via the heat generated by associated Diptera larval aggregations. Hot water baths were utilized as analogs for larval aggregations …
Why Didn't The Common Law Follow The Flag?, Christian R. Burset
Why Didn't The Common Law Follow The Flag?, Christian R. Burset
Journal Articles
This Article considers a puzzle about how different kinds of law came to be distributed around the world. The legal systems of some European colonies largely reflected the laws of the colonizer. Other colonies exhibited a greater degree of legal pluralism, in which the state administered a mix of different legal systems. Conventional explanations for this variation look to the extent of European settlement: where colonizers settled in large numbers, they chose to bring their own laws; otherwise, they preferred to retain preexisting ones. This Article challenges that assumption by offering a new account of how and why the British …

Examining The Administrative Unworkability Of Final Agency Action Doctrine As Applied To The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Adam Gerken
Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law
The application of the Administrative Procedure Act (“APA”) to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (“NAGPRA”) creates unique practical and doctrinal results. When considering the application of the current law concerning judicial review of final agency action under the APA to NAGPRA, it is evident that the law is simultaneously arbitrary and unclear. In the Ninth Circuit’s holding in Navajo Nation v. U.S. Department of the Interior, the Court applied final agency action doctrine in a manner that was legally correct but administratively unworkable. The Court’s opinion contravenes both the reasoning behind the APA final agency action …
