Staging A Modern Nation: The Art And Architecture Of The Peruvian Pavilion At The 1939/40 New York World’S Fair, Alida R. Jekabson

Theses and Dissertations

At the 1939/40 New York World’s Fair, the Peruvian government installed a multimedia display of objects and products in a foreign pavilion. An examination of the building and its contents provides a basis to understand how art and commerce work together to construct narratives of authenticity, nationalism and modernity.

A Conversation About Cultural Appropriation As Explored By An Emerging Media Professional, Shikha Shrestha May 2019

A Conversation About Cultural Appropriation As Explored By An Emerging Media Professional, Shikha Shrestha

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates cultural appropriation for the benefit of emerging media professionals. I use a personal encounter with cultural misappropriation as a starting point for the study. To further my exploration, I call upon the theory of symbolic interactionalism and scholarship in sociology, anthropology, and art criticism to better understand the concept. Then I interviewed many students and faculty members in the university community and they provided both insight and personal reflections on the concept, especially the media’s role in how they view cultural appropriation. Finally, I provide case studies, choosing three areas where cultural misappropriation has occurred, and suggest …

Situating Social Sustainability On Spartanburg’S Northside: An Engaged Neighborhood Study Of Community, History, And Place Making, Helen S. Seddelmeyer May 2019

Situating Social Sustainability On Spartanburg’S Northside: An Engaged Neighborhood Study Of Community, History, And Place Making, Helen S. Seddelmeyer

Community Based Research

From the very beginning of my research, I have been interested in sustainability and what it means to be sustainable. I was previously partial to environmental sustainability but came to the realization that understanding social sustainability is a more relevant and important topic for the Northside at this time. When a neighborhood is socially sustainable, they are investing in the next generation, building sincere relationships founded on trust, are adaptable, and have networks with civil society organizations such as schools, churches and businesses. Saffron Woodcraft defines social sustainability as, “a process for creating sustainable, successful places that promote well-being by …

A Community-Based Approach To Archaeological Site Preservation In A Changing Climate: A Proposed Risk Assessment Along The Lower Columbia, Phillip Daily, Virginia L. Butler May 2019

A Community-Based Approach To Archaeological Site Preservation In A Changing Climate: A Proposed Risk Assessment Along The Lower Columbia, Phillip Daily, Virginia L. Butler

Student Research Symposium

Global climate change is an increasing threat to cultural resources, especially in coastal areas. Archaeologists have responded with risk assessments that gauge these threats and create preservation priorities for land managers. However, most assessments do not include input from descendant communities, which limits their potential value and relevance to archaeologists and tribal partners. We are in the initial stages of developing a risk assessment model for the Lower Columbia that includes a process for collaborating with tribes. In addition to incorporating the existing archaeological and ethnohistorical data typically used in risk assessments, our project will also incorporate indigenous stakeholder priorities …

From Refugee To Citizen: Rhizomes And Roots In The Digital Age, Julia Nett, Michele Ruth Gamburd May 2019

From Refugee To Citizen: Rhizomes And Roots In The Digital Age, Julia Nett, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Student Research Symposium

This study examines digital media as platforms for current and former refugees to reaffirm and create themselves and to learn to be American. To think of refugees as “uprooted” with “roots that threaten to wither” (Malkki 1992, 32) is misguided. This study utilizes Deleuze and Guattari’s idea of the rhizome (1987) to rethink current and former refugee experiences postresettlement in the US. With the rising ubiquity of digital media and digital technologies, increasing numbers of refugees resettle with smartphones and other technologies. These technologies provide current and former refugees opportunities to maintain hybridized self-conceptions and to feel they are both …

A Survey Of Public Perceptions And Attitudes About Water Availability Following Exceptional Drought In Texas, Drew M. Gholson, Diane E. Boellstorff, Scott R. Cummings, Kevin L. Wagner, Monty C. Dozier

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

This study examines the results of a random sample survey of Texans evaluating citizen awareness, attitudes, and willingness to adopt water conservation practices. The study investigates changes in public attitudes following the most intense one-year drought on record in Texas by evaluating public perception of water availability, assessing Texans’ attitudes and perceptions regarding drought conditions, and comparing the number of Texans adopting practices to conserve water before and after the drought of 2011. Almost 70% indicated that the likelihood of their area suffering from a prolonged drought was increasing. More than 61% of respondents have changed the way their yard …

Gendered Spaces: The World Columbian Exposition Of 1893, The Woman's Building, And Mary Cassatt's Modern Woman, Haelim Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Mary Cassatt is acknowledged as a painter of women and of their daily lives, depicting such subjects as mothers bathing or cuddling their children, young women playing instruments, picking fruit, or attending performances; and girls running or sitting and reading. Her mural for The World Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago of 1893, and entitled, Modern Woman, continues in the same vein as her overall body of work. And yet, Cassatt understood that this mural was decorative in nature with its own visual tradition. The mural is a composition, the largest that Cassatt ever painted, about women and, in this case, …

The rise of palm oil as the world's most consumed vegetable oil has coincided with exponential growth in palm oil research activity. Bibliometric analysis of research outputs reveals a distinct imbalance in the type of research being undertaken, notably a disproportionate focus on biofuel and engineering topics. Recognizing the expansion of oil palm agriculture across the tropics and the increasing awareness of environmental, social, and economic impacts, we seek to reorientate the existing research agenda toward one that addresses the most fundamental and urgent questions defined by the palm oil stakeholder community. Following consultation with 659 stakeholders from 38 countries, …

Transborder Testimonios Of Language Learning And Socialization, Maria Teresa Guevara Beltrán

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This qualitative study utilizes a Chicana/Latina feminist lens and the Latin American tradition of Testimonio to explore Spanish-speaking immigrants’ experiences of migration, language learning and socialization, paying close attention to the ways in which the multilayered intersections of identity, race, class, gender, nationality, language, citizenship and power shape these experiences. In the context of a grassroots English as a Second Language class, testimonios are elicited through multimodal data collection methods, including visual, oral and written forms. Critical perspectives of second language learning and second language socialization research in bilingual contexts provide a multidisciplinary framework for this study, bridging conceptual parallels …

Development Of A Sonically Powered Biodegradable Nanogenerator For Bone Regeneration, Avi S. Patel May 2019

Development Of A Sonically Powered Biodegradable Nanogenerator For Bone Regeneration, Avi S. Patel

University Scholar Projects

Background: Reconstruction of bone fractures and defects remains a big challenge in orthopedic surgery. While regenerative engineering has advanced the field greatly using a combination of biomaterial scaffolds and stem cells, one matter of difficulty is inducing osteogenesis in these cells. Recent works have shown electricity’s ability to promote osteogenesis in stem cell lines when seeded in bone scaffolds; however, typical electrical stimulators are either (a) externally housed and require overcomplex percutaneous wires be connected to the implanted scaffold or (b) implanted non-degradable devices which contain toxic batteries and require invasive removal surgeries.

Objective: Here, we establish a biodegradable, piezoelectric …

Effects Of Enrichment On Captive Ring-Tailed Lemurs, Madison T. Evans May 2019

Effects Of Enrichment On Captive Ring-Tailed Lemurs, Madison T. Evans

Honors Capstones

This research aimed to examine the effects of different enrichment devices on the behavior of a group of four captive ring-tailed lemurs at Summerfield Zoo in Belvidere, IL. Enrichment has been shown to increase the overall health and wellbeing of animals living in captivity by encouraging natural behaviors while discouraging harmful behaviors. This project studied the reactions the lemurs had to four different feeding enrichment devices over a seven-week period. Lemurs sat and slept significantly more and interacted less during the pre-enrichment period (17%, 61%, 0% respectively) as compared to the during-enrichment period (34%, 0%, 33%) (T=5.74, p <0.001, T=14.17. p <0.001, T=-6.64, p < 0.001). Lemurs also sat more and slept less during the post-enrichment (28%, 30%) than during the pre-enrichment period (17%, 61%) (T=-3.69, p<0.01, T=8.10, p<0.001). There were no significant differences in the effects of the four different enrichment devices on the lemurs’ behavior. As wild ring-tailed lemurs are active during most of the day, the devices successfully increased naturalistic behaviors, and these effects persisted even in the post-enrichment period. These results suggest that zoo and sanctuary animals can benefit from exposure to different enrichment devices, and that even simple, inexpensive enrichment devices are effective and should be included in the daily care of all animals.

Contagious Environmental Lawmaking, Natasha Affolder May 2019

Contagious Environmental Lawmaking, Natasha Affolder

All Faculty Publications

It is rare to find an environmental law development or ‘innovation’ announced or celebrated without some discussion of its transferability. Discourses of diffusion are becoming increasingly central to the way that we develop, communicate and frame environmental law ideas. And yet, this significant dimension of environmental law practice seems to have outgrown existing conceptual scaffolding and scholarly vocabularies. The concept, and intentionally unfamiliar terminology, of ‘contagious lawmaking’ creates a space for both fleshing out, and problematizing, the phenomenon of the dynamic and multi-directional transfer of environmental law ideas. This article sets the stage for further study of the global diffusion …

The Belt And Road Initiative In Southeast Asia: Motivation, Strategies, And Challenges, Wenjing Xie

Open Access Theses

This thesis aims to analyze China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Southeast Asia from a perspective that does not privilege the interests of any particular nation. This paper lays out three essential aspects of the BRI: the motivation that drives China to invest in Southeast Asia, the strategy that China implements in the region, and the challenges that China faces going forward with the program. Through the analysis of specific projects across the Southeast Asian region, this thesis discusses the underlying factors that influence the projects’ status and type in various countries. It also discusses the domestic Chinese motivations for …

Enmesh: The Art Of Trauma And Recovery, Joanna Pottle

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Liminal Space is an artistic installation within the ongoing, interdisciplinary creative/research project "Enmesh: The Art of Trauma and Recovery.” Utilizing a combination of research methods, creative processes, and cultural inspirations, this project asks the following questions: how can the artistic process (this project serving as a preliminary case study) parallel various modes of recovery and healing? How can this objective be visually communicated through a mixed media approach of drawing, painting, and printmaking and how can this approach be an effective tool of communication? What can we conclude from both modes of work (solitarily or collectively)? How do they accomplish …

Teaching Empathy: Examining The Relationship Between State Political Environment And Social Studies Curriculum, Norman Morris Ellis Iii

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

In the age of partisan divide in America, education plays a pivotal role in overcoming social and political barriers––bridging these divides by creating a shared understanding of core values and beliefs that promote the tolerance and acceptance of the diversity of others and the recognition of the inequities that exist in society. Although there are number of factors that have contributed to our nation’s division, this paper specifically investigates how public education might play a role in mitigating social and political tension, and the political factors that might facilitate or hinder the implementation of valuable curriculum goals. The purpose of …

Jmu Campus Inclusivity Video Project, Meredith Grace Browder

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

After experiencing a general lack of knowledge at James Madison University (JMU) regarding inclusivity of students with varying abilities, I decided to find the best way to educate the JMU community on how to be more accommodating on campus. I surveyed students served by the Office of Disability Services in order to assess their concerns and needs. My survey data indicated that the students on campus with disabilities have felt isolated at JMU because of multiple factors including both student and faculty ignorance. After researching the significant role played by videos and social media in shaping public opinion, I used …
