Complicity, Dissent, And The Palestinian Intellectual, Sa'ed Atshan Jun 2019

Complicity, Dissent, And The Palestinian Intellectual, Sa'ed Atshan

Peace & Conflict Studies Faculty Works

In this article, I draw on the major works of two Palestinian intellectuals—Edward Said and Hanan Ashrawi—and I compare the experiences of Palestinian intellectuals living in the United States with those living under Israeli military occupation in the West Bank. The writings of these two exemplary figures shape the conceptual underpinnings of my exploration of the way Palestinian academics navigate questions of complicity with the different hegemonic political systems that govern their lives. I argue that Said and Ashrawi model a steadfast refusal to be complicit in the state-led repression around them at the same time as they engage in …

Climate Change And Forced Migration: The Special Case Of Disappearing States, Katharine S. Knight Jun 2019

Climate Change And Forced Migration: The Special Case Of Disappearing States, Katharine S. Knight

Standard Theses

Around the world, coastal areas and sinking islands are facing more frequent and intense storms, erosion, flooding, and salt-water intrusion. All of these events threaten to displace communities and the entire populations of some nations. Within countries, community displacement can present difficult problems of relocation. But in the international arena, the projected fate of displaced peoples – particularly those who live on sinking island states – is even more dire. The international community has refused to consider these displaced peoples “climate refugees,” or “refugees,” on par with others; rather, they are considered “stateless,” stripped of their nationalities and all protections. …

Ngos Embodying Decoloniality: Towards Emanticipatory Psychological Practice And Pedagogy In Palestine, Hana Masud Jun 2019

Ngos Embodying Decoloniality: Towards Emanticipatory Psychological Practice And Pedagogy In Palestine, Hana Masud

Dissertations

Abstract

The Palestinian need for aid is entirely a result of a decades long conflict with Israel. Western funders to Palestinian NGOs working in psychological services may have good intentions, but their traditional approaches to therapy and well-being may be inconsistent with a collective Palestinian identity of liberation. These colonizing therapies may stigmatize Palestinians as "traumatized", encouraging a defeated or passive mentality, undermining values of resistance, while ongoing Israeli oppression continues. The NGO policies and modes of work can also influence the worldview, practices, and motivations of Palestinian Mental health workers who are serving populations with much experience of violence …

Modifying Succession: A History Of Vegetation Alliances On Swanton Pacific Ranch, Jill Wilson O'Connor Jun 2019

Modifying Succession: A History Of Vegetation Alliances On Swanton Pacific Ranch, Jill Wilson O'Connor

Master's Theses

This thesis conducts historical research into Swanton Pacific Ranch in the County of Santa Cruz, an interdisciplinary facility for education and research managed by Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. The study seeks to determine whether there have been discernable changes in vegetation alliances (communities), spatially or in type, within a 110-acre Study Area from the early twentieth century to the present day and how the changes compare with other similar historical analyses in California. Historical farming and ranching uses of the area are researched, and two family case studies are presented as paradigms of potential changes …

© 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd Aim: We examined body size scaling relationships for two developmental life stages of parasitic helminths (egg and adult) separately in relationship to latitude (i.e. Bergmann's rule), temperature and temperature seasonality. Given that helminth eggs experience environmental conditions more directly, whereas adults live inside infected host individuals, we predict stronger environmentally driven gradients of body size for eggs than for adults. Location: Global. Time period: Present day. Major taxa studied: Parasitic helminths. Methods: We compiled egg size and adult body size data (both minimum and maximum) for 265 parasitic helminth species from the literature, …

Between Formalism And Discretion: Measuring Trends In Supreme Court Rhetoric, Michal Alberstein, Limor Gabay-Egozi, Bryna Bogoch Jun 2019

Between Formalism And Discretion: Measuring Trends In Supreme Court Rhetoric, Michal Alberstein, Limor Gabay-Egozi, Bryna Bogoch

Hofstra Law Review

This is the first study to use an empirical quantitative analysis to determine the nature of formalism in court decisions. Our analysis has revealed the complex interplay between different types of formalism in Supreme Court of Israel decisions and provides a new way of addressing a jurisprudential issue that has been debated by legal scholars for centuries.

The aspiration for formality is an integral element of judicial decision writing. Judges are expected to decide cases based on rules, with limited discretion and choice, using professional, dispassionate, and impersonal language. At the same time, deviation from formalism, which reflects personal expression …

The Mediation Of The Cross: Spatiality And Syncretism In Pedro Páramo And Grande Sertão: Veredas, Faith Arianna Blackhurst Jun 2019

The Mediation Of The Cross: Spatiality And Syncretism In Pedro Páramo And Grande Sertão: Veredas, Faith Arianna Blackhurst

Theses and Dissertations

Juan Rulfo and João Guimarães Rosa stand at a literary crossroads, the intersection where traditional regionalists and celebrated Boom-era novelists meet. Although Rulfo and Guimarães Rosa chose the Mexican Llano Grande and the Brazilian sertão of Minas Gerais as the settings of their most celebrated novels, they go far beyond the techniques of traditional regionalism by distancing themselves from their national literatures. They universalize their narratives by incorporating universal religious themes, including the symbol of the cross. The symbol of the cross/crossroad has been analyzed and alluded to in a handful of essays on Pedro Páramo and Grande sertão: Veredas …

Predicting Climate Types For The Continental United States Using Unsupervised Clustering Techniques, D. Sathiaraj, X. Huang, J. Chen Jun 2019

Predicting Climate Types For The Continental United States Using Unsupervised Clustering Techniques, D. Sathiaraj, X. Huang, J. Chen

Faculty Publications

The problem of clustering climate data observation sites and grouping them by their climate types is considered. Machine learning–based clustering algorithms are used in analyzing climate data time series from more than 3,000 climate observation sites in the United States, with the objective of classifying climate type for regions across the United States. Understanding the climate type of a region has applications in public health, environment, actuarial science, insurance, agriculture, and engineering. In this study, daily climate data measurements for temperature and precipitation from the time period 1946–2015 have been used. The daily data observations were grouped into three derived …

A Proxemic Study Of Waterfront Shophouses At The Hua Takhe Market, Bangkok, Thailand, Waricha Wongphyat Jun 2019

A Proxemic Study Of Waterfront Shophouses At The Hua Takhe Market, Bangkok, Thailand, Waricha Wongphyat

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Given that a physical environment is a manifestation of its socio-cultural context, this paper seeks to examine the development of the Hua Takhe settlement, the physical components of the community, the socio-spatial interconnection, and the spatial essences of the waterfront shophouses in relation to the ownership patterns. Based on field surveys, oral histories, and observations, the research employs Hall's theory of space to extricate the anthropological aspects of the case studies. It is noted that different types of ownership, i.e. inherited and long-term rental, affect the physical and spatial transformations as well as the social proxemics of the shophouses. This …

Texas Indian Holocaust And Survival: Mcallen Grace Brethren Church V. Salazar, Milo Colton Jun 2019

Texas Indian Holocaust And Survival: Mcallen Grace Brethren Church V. Salazar, Milo Colton

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

When the first Europeans entered the land that would one day be called Texas, they found a place that contained more Indian tribes than any other would-be American state at the time. At the turn of the twentieth century, the federal government documented that American Indians in Texas were nearly extinct, decreasing in number from 708 people in 1890 to 470 in 1900. A century later, the U.S. census recorded an explosion in the American Indian population living in Texas at 215,599 people. By 2010, that population jumped to 315,264 people.

Part One of this Article chronicles the forces contributing …

Nationalistic Smog Over Poland, Alfred Marek Wierzbicki Jun 2019

Nationalistic Smog Over Poland, Alfred Marek Wierzbicki

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Excerpt: "Nationalism poisons Christianity. It strips its universalism and humanism. Using a slogan from a church hymn “We want God” on nationalists’ banners should rouse objection. God cannot be appropriated by one nation. Besides that, what is the reason for elevating this slogan in a setting conducive to religious freedom? If this supposed to be a response to secularization of modern culture, then combining it with racial slogans of white civilization and clearly anti-Islamic slogans, is a primitive action grown out from a fear of what is different and foreign. Religion assimilating social and national fears is a pathological phenomenon …

Policing Hate Speech And Extremism: A Taxonomy Of Arguments In Opposition, Leonard M. Niehoff Jun 2019

Policing Hate Speech And Extremism: A Taxonomy Of Arguments In Opposition, Leonard M. Niehoff

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Hate speech and extremist association do real and substantial harm to individuals, groups, and our society as a whole. Our common sense, experience, and empathy for the targets of extremism tell us that our laws should do more to address this issue. Current reform efforts have therefore sought to revise our laws to do a better job at policing, prohibiting, and punishing hate speech and extremist association.

Efforts to do so, however, encounter numerous and substantial challenges. We can divide them into three general categories: definitional problems, operational problems, and conscientious problems. An informed understanding of these three categories of …

Artificial Intelligence: Discerning A Christian Response, Derek Schuurman Jun 2019

Artificial Intelligence: Discerning A Christian Response, Derek Schuurman

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques employing deep learning have recently achieved remarkable strides in tackling difficult problems and spurring applications in many new areas. Responses to these developments have ranged from existential fear to unbridled optimism. This technology opens up a plethora of ethical considerations and ontological questions about what it means to be human. The approach one takes to questions arising in AI is largely shaped by our philosophical presuppositions and our worldview. This article sketches some of the implications and important questions that arise surrounding AI. The article concludes by urging Christians to join this conversation, bringing insights from …

Understanding Trauma And Victimization In Women's Incarceration: California's Treatment Response, Marissa Tuttle-Roache Jun 2019

Understanding Trauma And Victimization In Women's Incarceration: California's Treatment Response, Marissa Tuttle-Roache

Social Sciences

The purpose of this review is to provide an exploration of past research on women's pathways to incarceration, specifically discussing how this problem affects California women. Using research from various case studies, both quantitative and qualitative, this review examines the correlation between life experiences and incarceration for women. California laws and policies that mitigate the impact incarceration has historically had on women will be discussed. This research provides a better understanding of the treatment needs of incarcerated women and the programs that could provide them with some positive resources to succeed post incarceration and avoid recidivism.

An Analysis On The Universalism-Relativism Debate, The Effects Of Ethnocentrism, And How These Theories Dictate Human Rights Around The World, Katherine J. Brouker Jun 2019

An Analysis On The Universalism-Relativism Debate, The Effects Of Ethnocentrism, And How These Theories Dictate Human Rights Around The World, Katherine J. Brouker

Communication Studies

This paper analyzes theories correlated with Human Rights and Intercultural Communication. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) entails thirty basic human rights that are intended to held by every living human. Universalist scholars believe that these are inalienable, regardless of certain cultural values that differ from societies around the world. Relativist scholars believe that there needs to be a respect for cultural practices, even if they are harmful to other people. A case study is performed to illustrate the positive and negatives to both theories. Ethnocentrism is then introduced, which is when people judge cultures and practices that are …

Creando Cultura A Través De La Comida: Un Cuento De La Perseverancia Y El Ingenio Cubano, Gabriel Hatcher Jun 2019

Creando Cultura A Través De La Comida: Un Cuento De La Perseverancia Y El Ingenio Cubano, Gabriel Hatcher

World Languages and Cultures

This project analyzes the cultural impacts of Cuban culinary history starting with the 16th-century Spanish colonization. Cuba is an incredible case example for culinary adaptations due to its tumultuous history of population demographic shifts, political uprisings, and economic downturns. I will begin by analyzing the culinary shifts brought about the importation of African and Asian workers associated with the sugar cane industry. I then discuss the impact of the fall of the Batista government and the rise of the Cuban Revolutionary government. The Revolutionary government brought about standardization of available ingredients and helped popularize specific Cuban dishes until the fall …
