Political Demonology, Dehumanization, And Contemporary Thai Politics, Siwach Sripokangkul, Mark S. Cogan Jun 2019

Political Demonology, Dehumanization, And Contemporary Thai Politics, Siwach Sripokangkul, Mark S. Cogan

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The employment of acts of political demonology has become common among power holders in Thai society. Demonization campaigns trace back to the early 1970s when Thai nationalists deemed Communists to be “beasts in human clothing.” This paper reviews demonization strategies employed by power holders (countersubversives) to undermine, marginalize, and repress anti-government protesters (subversives), beginning with the formative 1970s student movements, and continuing through the 2014 military coup d’état. We argue through a series of vignettes that the Thai elites have conveniently labeled anti-government protesters and their mobilization networks as demons, trolls, or animals due to their supposed threats to the …

The study included 14 months of participant observation, ethnographic interviews with 19 lucky bamboo farmers, in-depth interviews with 69 villagers, semi-structured interviews with 10 local government officials, and a discourse analysis on international guidelines, …

Self-Inflicted Wounds: Reversing Nursing Research Regression By Catalyzing Students' Curiosity, Kate Rocklein Kemplin, Christine Benz Smith, Marissa Bunch

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Academic nursing needs to seriously examine its abandonment of undergraduate and graduate research projects as prerequisites for graduation, as we inadvertently are creating generations of clinicians without an appreciation for or commitment to scholarship and knowledge generation. Simple restructuring of research courses dramatically changed students' perceptions of nursing science pursuits.

Popular Geography Writing In America, 1783–1888, Shane Patrick Avery Jun 2019

Popular Geography Writing In America, 1783–1888, Shane Patrick Avery

Dissertations - ALL

“Popular Geography Writing in America, 1783–1888” is an intellectual and cultural history that traces the connections among geography writing, print culture, and nationalism. It challenges the conventional historiographical paradigm that understands antebellum and postbellum periods in United States history as fundamentally discontinuous. The study suggests that the published geographies of Jedidiah Morse, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Griswold Goodrich, Arnold Guyot, William Gilpin, George Perkins Marsh, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Albert Richardson, Clarence King, and John Wesley Powell created a popular discursive sense of equivalency between the physical landscape of a North American continent and the United States as a nationstate.

In addition to running the company for over three decades, Amway’s cofounders, Richard DeVos and Jay Van Andel, along with members of their families, have been influential players in the Republican …

International Teaching Assistants’ Perceptions Of English And Spanish Language Use At The University Of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, Edward G. Contreras Santiago

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Globalization and sociopolitical factors impact migration patterns all over the world. In Puerto Rico, these factors created superdiverse environments where languages users have pushed the boundaries of language in order to make sense of their worlds. Even though this language dynamic is natural for locals, it is those who visit from different countries, specifically international graduate students, that have a difficult time adjusting to Puerto Rico’s rich use of English and Spanish. Understanding how international graduate students perceive the language used at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM) upon arrival is essential to provide a better experience for future …

ESOL materials designed to teach …

The Religion Of Policing: Race, Riots, And The Killing Of Alton Sterling, Landon Jay Douglas Jun 2019

The Religion Of Policing: Race, Riots, And The Killing Of Alton Sterling, Landon Jay Douglas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deadly force encounters with black people and law enforcement officials are far too numerous and encounters that result in the death of civilians do not always result in disciplinary actions against officers, many of whom are white. The high-profile killings of black people in America require an in-depth analysis of race, policing, and the origins of tactics used by law enforcement against black people, which is not merely data-driven, but also theory driven. In trying to understand the disparate treatment experienced by black people at the hands of law enforcement officials, and the extent to which many Americans, mostly white …

Lectio Divina: A Call For Salah & Poetic Being, Momina A. Khan

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

I reflect back on the ARTS Pre-Conference 2017 of the Canadian Society for Studies in Education. It was a day full of non-linear knowledge exchanges, conversations, creations, contemplation and arts-based activities. Collaborators dwelled in, engaged, and emerged together spiritually, poetically, and musically to rekindle their learning, coexistence and mystical understandings. I was in my fasting state with dry mouth, hungry stomach, and thirsty soul combined with contemplative sessions, plus my scholarly and poetic inspirations in the flesh. It was purely an epoch of unbridled spirit tenderly wrapped in creative and contemplative ways of being present in the moment, with the …

Comadre Work: Grassroots Feminism In A Kaqchikel Maya Town, Joyce Bennett

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay analyzes indigenous women’s collective action that improves indigenous women’s lives and increases their agency in a Kaqchikel Maya town. The women whose work I consider come together under the structures of a patriarchal organization, the Principe de Paz evangelical church. I extend Patricia Hill Collins’ concept of motherwork and Nancy Naples’ concept of activist mothering to what I call comadre work, or care work that women enact for each other through creative kin networks. Women practice comadre work as they pool physical and financial resources, teach each other to read and write in Spanish, and speak for themselves …

The Humanitarian Gaze And The Spectatorial Nature Of Sympathy, Michelle Assaad Jun 2019

The Humanitarian Gaze And The Spectatorial Nature Of Sympathy, Michelle Assaad

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ansel Adams, one of the world’s great photographers, once said, “There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.” This thesis will explore the relationship of the photographer, the viewer, and the photographed subject in the context of humanitarian photography, which has historically internalized a specific balance of power between the worlds of the photographer, viewer, and subject. By examining this tangible expression of the internalized world, this thesis is also performing a critical examination of humanitarianism itself with the intent of improving humanitarian practices and interior worlds. In examining these topics, this thesis will answer …

Analyzing Social Issues Within Rock Island’S Christian Communities, Daniel Warren

Celebration of Learning

This research asks how Christians within the Quad Cities Area understand prevalent American social issues. Through my research, I explored how homophobia, racism, and gender discrimination fit within the context of American Christianity. I conducted interviews and participant observation with two different communities within the Rock Island area: Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and the Quad Cities Mainspring Ministry. My research examines several major themes: race, sexuality, gender, and socioeconomic status, and through my research I concluded that religion is a major factor in contributing to how my participants have viewed these themes.
