The Disenchantment Of History And The Tragic Consciousness Of Chinese Postmodernity, Alberto Castelli Jul 2019

The Disenchantment Of History And The Tragic Consciousness Of Chinese Postmodernity, Alberto Castelli

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Magic Realism brings fantastic events into the frame of the narration. Yet it cannot quite be defined. At the very start of the process of definition, there is a question: Magic Realism is a mode of narration, or rather a post-colonial movement rising sociological issues alternative to the logic of power? The paper parallels and juxtaposes Latin American Magic Realism and the literary experience of Chinese literary Avant-garde in the 80s, similar apocalyptic thematic, but different narrative structures. Relating to the fictional universe of Can Xue and Yu Hua, the aim is to illuminate an exclusive mode to narrate history: …

Contrary to traditional forms of tourism such as mass tourism, ecotourism has widely been recognized as an economic diversification and developmental tool, and an appropriate approach for conservation of natural resources for destinations with tourism heritage possessions as it provides protection and economic incentives. The aim of this study is to assess opportunities and challenges for community-based ecotourism development. A mixed research approach was devised and a cross-sectional research design was used. Tools of primary data collection were questionnaires, focus group discussions, interviews and observation checklists. Customized Cwt-Cca: Discovery Of Prominent Persons In The Crime Network, Ganeshkumar Pugalendhi, Shanmugapriya Kumaresan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we propose a modified Cluster Walk Trap (CWT) approach combined with Closed Cycle Approach(CCA). The proposed method uses probability measure in a multimode network to evaluate group of persons involved in common crime and group of crime done by a common person thereby avoiding the difficulty of adjacency matrix. The usage of transitivity based on closed cycle in node identification overcomes the problem of computational complexity with the increased number of nodes and edges. Based on the clustering coefficient value, the influential nodes are classified as victim, suspect and witness. Experiments are conducted using the publicly available …

Making Sense Of The Anti-Same-Sex-Marriage Movement In France, Scott Gunther Jul 2019

Making Sense Of The Anti-Same-Sex-Marriage Movement In France, Scott Gunther

Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article examines the political style and rhetoric of the Manif pour tous (MPT), the main organization opposing same-sex marriage in France, from summer 2013 to the present. It exposes how the MPT's style and rhetoric differ from those of their American counterparts, and what this tells us about the different strategies of political movements in France and the United States generally. It is based on an analysis of the language used by activists whom I interviewed in 2014 and 2015 and on a discourse analysis of the MPT’s website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, and press releases since 2013. This …

Thinking Quantum: A New Perspective On Decisionmaking In Law, Christopher B. Jaeger, Jennifer S. Trueblood Jul 2019

Thinking Quantum: A New Perspective On Decisionmaking In Law, Christopher B. Jaeger, Jennifer S. Trueblood

Florida State University Law Review

Behavioral law and economics (BLE) is built on the observation that human decisionmaking is often incompatible with rational choice theory. But if our decisions do not follow the rules of rational choice theory, is there a general set of rules they do follow? Can BLE offer a coherent alternative to rational choice? To the extent it has addressed these questions, BLE has struggled with them. But an emerging psychological theory called "quantum decisionmaking" may offer answers. Quantum decisionmaking offers a new perspective on how people think about probabilities-one that challenges core assumptions of rational choice theory. Specifically, quantum decisionmaking assumes …

Snapchat's Gift: Equity Culture In High-Tech Firms, Amy D. Westbrook, David A. Westbrook Jul 2019

Snapchat's Gift: Equity Culture In High-Tech Firms, Amy D. Westbrook, David A. Westbrook

Florida State University Law Review

Snap, Inc., the company that owns the platform Snapchat, controbersially offered nonvoting common shares to the public in 2017. This Article asks what it means to invest in Snap or other (mostly technology-based) companies in which common shareholders collectibely have little or no power to influence corporate policy. In particular, why do such investors expect to be compensated? This Article explores the familiar rationales for equity investing, including stock appreciation and dividends, and the logical shortcomings of those rationales in these circumstances. Adopting Henry Manne's "two systems" approach to corporate affairs through both law and economics, we show that corporation …

Maya America: Introduction To The Journal Of Essays, Commentary, And Analysis, James Loucky Jul 2019

Maya America: Introduction To The Journal Of Essays, Commentary, And Analysis, James Loucky

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Twenty years ago, the first account of the emerging transnational scope of the Maya, The Maya Diaspora: Guatemalan Roots, New American Lives (2000), focused on the roots and emerging realities of Maya migration. Much has changed in a short time. While lives and identities continue to involve intergenerational connections to the south, they are also increasingly ones that reflect an intersection of indigenous, intercultural, and transnational experiences. Ultimately, it is hoped that Maya America will serve to reveal how greatly interconnected are the Americas, through processes of social and cultural evolution, history, and demography, and through assertions of rights of …

Importance Of Cultural Intelligence: Cross-Cultural Examination And Analysis, Daniel Marcotte, Elzotbek Rustambekov, Joseph Trendowski

Business Faculty Publications

Globalization requires collaboration, partnerships, alliances, trade agreements, and business conduct across both borders and cultures. Growth in international business necessitates corporations and employees to be culturally intelligent. Cultural intelligence has proved to be an instrumental skill that will be a major determinant in the success of cross-cultural collaborations. We examine cross-cultural situations of financial and social problems caused by a lack of cultural intelligence and compare them to situations of effective collaborations. We conclude with practical suggestions and five recommendations that can help improve cultural intelligence levels.

Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Of The Salinas River: A Human Dimensions-Inclusive Overview For Assessing Landscape-Scale Beaver-Assisted Restoration Opportunities, Stuart Christian Suplick

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Across the western United States, researchers are increasingly working with beaver (Castor canadensis) for process-based stream and watershed restoration. One recently-developed geographic information system-based tool, the Beaver Restoration Assessment Tool (BRAT), analyzes opportunities for beaver-assisted restoration (BAR) at a landscape-scale. However, this tool benefits significantly from human dimensions-inclusive, basin-centralized beaver knowledge for proper interpretation. Unfortunately, this information is scattered or absent in most semi-arid and arid southern California basins. This study thus sought to gather and produce this information through an explorative, benefits-maximizing approach to landscape-scale BAR opportunities assessment in one of these basins, the Salinas River. 49.2 …

Critically Assessing Forms Of Resistance In Music Education, Brent C. Talbot, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams Jul 2019

Critically Assessing Forms Of Resistance In Music Education, Brent C. Talbot, Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams

Education Faculty Publications

In their classrooms, music educators draw upon critical pedagogy (as described by Freire, Giroux, and hooks) for the express purpose of cultivating a climate for conscientização. Conscientização, according to Paulo Freire (2006), “refers to learning to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions and to take action against the oppressive elements of reality” (p. 35). This consciousness raising is a journey teachers pursue with students, together interrogating injustices in communities and the world in order to transform the conditions that inform them. Learning to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions often leads to multiple forms of resistance in and …
