Comparing Brazilian College Soccer Players’ Lived-Experiences In Brazil And The United States: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Gender, Sport, And Location, Mandeville Anne Wakefield

Open Access Theses

The present research serves as a pilot study, addressing the lived experiences of male and female Brazilian soccer players who play (or have played) college soccer in the United States. Specifically, it examines how these athletes perceive gender-based support in Brazil and in the U.S. We administered a quantitative study by means of an online survey in order to conduct this research. Our results indicate a few recurrent themes, including differing perceptions of community support for different sports based on gender and location, contradicting results on participants’ perceptions of gender discrimination, perceived presumed sexual orientation, participants responses to questions regarding …

Dynamis Of Healing, Pia Sophia Chaudhari Aug 2019

Dynamis Of Healing, Pia Sophia Chaudhari

Religion

This book explores how traces of the energies and dynamics of Orthodox Christian theology and anthropology may be observed in the clinical work of depth psychology. Looking to theology to express its own religious truths and to psychology to see whether these truth claims show up in healing modalities, the author creatively engages both disciplines in order to highlight the possibilities for healing contained therein. Dynamis of Healing elucidates how theology and psychology are by no means fundamentally at odds with each other, but rather can work together in a beautiful and powerful synergia to address both the deepest needs …

Seasonal Masculinities: Seasonal Labor Migration And Masculinities In Rural Western India, Pronoy Rai Aug 2019

Seasonal Masculinities: Seasonal Labor Migration And Masculinities In Rural Western India, Pronoy Rai

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this research article, I study seasonal labor migration in rural western India to understand gender negotiations in the course of labor migration. Based on qualitative research conducted in six villages in rural Maharashtra state in Western India during the early Kharif cropping season in 2014 and during Kharif and Rabi cropping seasons in 2015–16, I examine gendered labor in migrant home communities and at various rural and urban employment destinations, the relationship of labor to the social construction of masculinities, and gender negotiations across space. I show that in their home communities, the politics of resistance of returnee laborers …

“And They Shall Eat Until They Are Satisfied:” Critical Disability Theory And Widows, Orphans, Aliens, And Levites In The Book Of Deuteronomy, Cheryl Strimple

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers the construction of widows, orphans, aliens, and Levites in deuteronomic law. Making use of multiple methodologies, literary criticism, Disability Studies, and food and foodway studies, this study argues that, in Deuteronomy, the members of the formulaic reference, “the alien, the orphan, and the widow,” often associated with “the Levite” operate as cultic functionaries and participate in cultic meals in order to secure stability and continuing abundance in the land for all of Israel.

Augustine's Concept Of Volition And Its Significance For The Doctrine Of Original Sin, Scot Bontrager Aug 2019

Augustine's Concept Of Volition And Its Significance For The Doctrine Of Original Sin, Scot Bontrager

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Augustine has been credited as the inventor of the concept of volition (the will), and yet it is not clear from this claim exactly what his concept of volition is. His understanding of the human person, especially his theory of volition, has had profound implications for much of the theological work which followed. This thesis examines various concepts which influenced Augustine’s notion of volition, contemporary ways of understanding volition, and what Augustine himself believed about it. Since the will is central to Augustine’s description of the human person and the human condition a careful examination of the concept is necessary …

The Importance Of Landscape Position Information And Elevation Uncertainty For Barrier Island Habitat Mapping And Modeling, Nicholas Matthew Enwright Aug 2019

The Importance Of Landscape Position Information And Elevation Uncertainty For Barrier Island Habitat Mapping And Modeling, Nicholas Matthew Enwright

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Barrier islands provide important ecosystem services, including storm protection and erosion control to the mainland, habitat for fish and wildlife, and tourism. As a result, natural resource managers are concerned with monitoring changes to these islands and modeling future states of these environments. Landscape position, such as elevation and distance from shore, influences habitat coverage on barrier islands by regulating exposure to abiotic factors, including waves, tides, and salt spray. Geographers commonly use aerial topographic lidar data for extracting landscape position information. However, researchers rarely consider lidar elevation uncertainty when using automated processes for extracting elevation-dependent habitats from lidar data. …

Haiti’S Pact With The Devil?: Bwa Kayiman, Haitian Protestant Views Of Vodou, And The Future Of Haiti, Bertin M. Louis Jr. Aug 2019

Haiti’S Pact With The Devil?: Bwa Kayiman, Haitian Protestant Views Of Vodou, And The Future Of Haiti, Bertin M. Louis Jr.

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This essay uses ethnographic research conducted among Haitian Protestants in the Bahamas in 2005 and 2012 plus internet resources to document the belief among Haitian Protestants (Haitians who practice Protestant forms of Christianity) that Haiti supposedly made a pact with the Devil (Satan) as the result of Bwa Kayiman, a Vodou ceremony that launched the Haitian Revolution (1791–1803). Vodou is the syncretized religion indigenous to Haiti. I argue that this interpretation of Bwa Kayiman is an extension of the negative effects of the globalization of American Fundamentalist Christianity in Haiti and, by extension, peoples of African descent and the …

Fair To Middlin’: How The Mediocre White Male Trope As The Exemplar Of Human Experience And Universal Truth Fails To Adequately Prepare The Diverse Field Of Contemporary Actors And Audiences In Film, Television And Theatre Today, Shanda Quintal

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Non-traditional casting has been a controversial practice in film, television and theatre that was implemented to offer people of color and women opportunities which had previously been available to white or male performers. The following is a case study documenting the process by which I have discovered that non-traditional casting as a practice contributes to the oppression of people of color as well as supports the status quo of the white patriarchy. This case study is analyzed from the historical, sociological, psychological and philosophical theories and ideologies relevant to the unsuccessful attempt of a female actor of African-American descent at …

Hand-Built Ceramics At 810 Royal And Intercultural Trade In French Colonial New Orleans, Travis M. Trahan Aug 2019

Hand-Built Ceramics At 810 Royal And Intercultural Trade In French Colonial New Orleans, Travis M. Trahan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

While trade relations between French colonists and indigenous peoples in New Orleans are well documented, there have been few in depth studies utilizing archaeological sites in the city to illuminate the ways in which such relations shaped the day to day lives of the peoples involved. This work has attempted to elucidate trade practices between these groups by utilizing archaeological data uncovered at 810 Royal Street during excavations from 2015 through 2018. A collection of hand-built ceramics typically associated with indigenous peoples found in French colonial contexts on the site may help explicate the nature of trade occurring within the …

Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson Aug 2019

Humeri Spatulate Tools Associations And Function In Chaco Canyon, Nm, Sara L. Anderson

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

In the two papers that comprise this thesis, I will be discussing Bone Spatulate Tools (BSTs) specifically those made of artiodactyl humeri found within Chaco Canyon, NM. These archaeological tool types permit the investigation of androcentric biases by way of legacy data acquired using the Chaco Research Archive (CRA). By redressing these archaeological biases, I hope to resuscitate an understudied tool type and highlight their function and importance in Chacoan toolkits. In chapter two, I investigate women and gendered activities by examining Humeri Spatulate Tools (HSTs) that are found at Chacoan great and small house sites. In this study, I …

When I Die Bury Me In This: An Arts-Based Research On Human Death, Decomposition, And Body Disposition Methods And The Taphonomy Metaphor Of Our Personal Belongings, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson Aug 2019

When I Die Bury Me In This: An Arts-Based Research On Human Death, Decomposition, And Body Disposition Methods And The Taphonomy Metaphor Of Our Personal Belongings, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson

Action Research Projects

This arts-based research project explores the connection between our deaths and what happens to our personal belongings. I researched body disposition methods and intertwined those concepts with objects found in unlikely places like auctions and the side of the highway into my art practice. Utilizing the a/r/tography methodology, I focused on the spaces between and embracing the rhizomatic connections that appeared through what ultimately was a very personal journey. I collected a variety of data using taphonomy as a metaphor for our personal belongings and as a conceptual framework. Methods of data collection including mind maps, informal surveys, visual journals, …

What A Choice-Based Classroom Teaches Students, Kathryn Beth Potter Aug 2019

What A Choice-Based Classroom Teaches Students, Kathryn Beth Potter

Action Research Projects

This study is about the choice-based classroom philosophy of Teaching for Artistic Behavior. It investigates the outcomes for students in light of the cognitive possibilities of Elliot Eisner and Nel Noddings’ theme of care. I utilized the method of education criticism in order to gather observations from my own TAB classroom in combination with reflections on the development of strategies and structures within the classroom. Observations of student actions and conversations provided data that were evaluated to find evidence of Eisner and Noddings’ possible outcome. The data revealed that in a structured environment student choice was able to help students …

Field Theory Toward A Post Critical Theory Of Metaphor, Lori Wagner Aug 2019

Field Theory Toward A Post Critical Theory Of Metaphor, Lori Wagner

Doctor of Ministry

Metaphor studies have become vogue in postcritical culture among the scientific and socio-scientific communities, in advertising and in the political arena. In fact, advertisers and marketers for years have known the power of a resonant metaphor to change minds and hearts. Once relegated to the realms of literature and linguistics, metaphor studies today represent the cutting edge of research in nearly every discipline. However, the church and the Biblical Studies academy have essentially ignored this trend, still engaging predominantly in close critical analyses of texts and refusing for the most part to engage in popular culture.

This dissertation agrees with …

A Moral Panic Over Cats, William S. Lynn, Francisco J. Santiago-Ávila, Joann Lindenmayer, John Hadidian, Arian D. Wallach, Barbara J. King

Stray and Feral Animal Populations Collection

Some conservationists believe that free-ranging cats pose an enormous risk to biodiversity and public health and therefore should be eliminated from the landscape by any means necessary. They further claim that those who question the science or ethics behind their arguments are science deniers (merchants of doubt) seeking to mislead the public. As much as we share a commitment to conservation of biodiversity and wild nature, we believe these ideas are wrong and fuel an unwarranted moral panic over cats. Those who question the ecological or epidemiological status of cats are not science deniers, and it is a false analogy …

Searching For Sustainable, Intergenerational, And Multiracial Coalitions On The Neoliberal Campus: A Case Study, Victoria Agunod Aug 2019

Searching For Sustainable, Intergenerational, And Multiracial Coalitions On The Neoliberal Campus: A Case Study, Victoria Agunod

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This case study tracks the repercussions and re/productions effected by the alt-Right agitator Milo Yiannopolous' visit to DePaul University's campus on his “Dangerous Faggot Tour” and the consequential riot he led through campus in 2016. Looking closely at the relational positionalities and responses of the student protesters, the university administration, and the antiracist student affairs practitioners who supported the protesters, the analysis seeks to answer how the neoliberal university strategically prevents coalition-building among marginalized students, staff, and faculty, especially when the matter deals with, race, racism, and antiracism. The study unravels the structural and rhetorical strategies of neoliberalism that the …

Environmentalism Isn’T New: Lessons From Indigenous Law, Joseph Kowalski Aug 2019

Environmentalism Isn’T New: Lessons From Indigenous Law, Joseph Kowalski

Buffalo Environmental Law Journal

The much-overlooked laws and lifeways of Indigenous people show that concepts of environmental sustainability have long been a part of the human tradition. By studying the Indigenous jurisprudence of societies that maintained these traditions into the modern era, much can be learned. Rather than making laws in regards to the land, the land itself was the source of the law, for the environmental laws were built around a relationship with the land.

Through most of human history, the western world had a similar relationship. However, the Holy Roman Empire’s interpretation of Biblical scripture, which at that time was law, forever …
