‘Not Shap’D For Sportive Tricks:’ Representations Of Disability In Film And Digital Broadcast Cinema Adaptations Of Early Modern Drama, Grace Mccarthy
‘Not Shap’D For Sportive Tricks:’ Representations Of Disability In Film And Digital Broadcast Cinema Adaptations Of Early Modern Drama, Grace Mccarthy
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In films that feature disability, we see the recursive and discussion-limiting impulse to say “this representation is negative. Therefore, the representation should not be seen,” based on critical theories and methodologies outside the purview of film studies. Unfortunately, the overlay of an English, narratological, sociological, or medical methodology and terminology onto a film representation of disability is ultimately recursive and self-limiting; critical and advocate calls for accuracy to the lived experience of people with disabilities in on-screen representations decline to engage with the visual construction of cinematic representations of disability and the often fascinating cinematographic and thematic patterns that emerge …
Impacts Of Transportation Infrastructure On Water Quality, Sediment Loads, And Fishing Opportunities In The Gwich’In Settlement Area, Northwest Territories, Matthew Teillet
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The addition of gravel sediment to build ferry landings on the Peel and Mackenzie Rivers has been an ongoing concern for the Gwich’in communities of Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic that depend on the rivers for their livelihoods. Specifically, there are concerns that gravel from ferry landings is degrading water quality, harming fishing opportunities, and altering river morphology downstream. Previous reports concluded that ferry operations were not impacting downstream ecology. However, past studies had methodological shortcomings and community concerns about the ferry landings remain. To study the impact of the gravel landings on water quality, I utilized a multidisciplinary study design …
A Qualitative Exploration Into The Subjective Experiences Of Healthcare Serial Killers, Florence Tang
A Qualitative Exploration Into The Subjective Experiences Of Healthcare Serial Killers, Florence Tang
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The prototypical serial killer is widely perceived as extremely violent offender who murders out of sexual gratification (Hodgkinson et al., 2017). The perception of serial killers primarily being sexual sadists may be greatly affected by an overfocus of research on sexually violent serial killers and a lack of attention on their non-sexually motivated counterparts such as healthcare serial killers (HCSK) (Lubaszka et al., 2014). In addition, a lack of qualitative inquiry into the experiences of serial homicide may be an impediment to understanding the deeper psychological reasons of why serial killers commit homicide (Kerr & Beech, 2016; Skrapec, 2001a). The …

This collection focuses on students who earned a degree in sociocultural anthropology; in future editions, we hope to include alumni from all four subfields of anthropology. The contributors graduated from colleges in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts; in the future, we would like to expand this project to include students from other states and regions. We believe there is a strong need for a compilation of this kind. People with undergraduate degrees in anthropology are doing incredibly interesting and valuable work; their stories are both informative and inspiring. We are pleased to publish the first of what we hope will …

You May Call Me Professor: Professor Form Of Address In Email Communication And College Student Reactions To Not Knowing What To Call Their Professors, Grace M. Hildenbrand, Evan K. Perrault, Taylor M. Devine
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This experimental study tested whether a professor’s form of address (FOA) and email signature influenced students’ perceptions of the professor’s credibility, approachability, and likability. Guided by communication accommodation theory, the study investigated the likelihood that students would reciprocate a professor’s FOA in email communication. Participants were randomly assigned to one of seven conditions varying by professor FOA (doctor, professor, first name) and email signature (present or not), with a signature only control condition. Results indicated students were more likely to reciprocate the FOA when an email signature was not present. Open-ended responses suggested students perceive instructors more positively when instructors …

Restricting Pesticides On A Traditional Crop: The Example Of Khat (Catha Edulis) And The Njuri Ncheke Of Meru, Kenya, James S. Krueger, Daniel M. Mutyambai
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Rampant increase and diversification of synthetic pesticides poses health, environmental, and livelihood risks especially to smallholder farmers who dominate agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. Legal mechanisms for regulating pesticides, although important, have not fully addressed the dangers of ecological services disruptions due to accumulation of different pesticides over time. Legal mechanisms also are not well suited to developing countries because of weak monitoring and enforcement capacity. Understanding the role of other accountability mechanisms in farming, driven by norm leaders in the community, is thus of paramount importance. We investigated the effectiveness of a traditional accountability mechanism, i.e., local councils of elders …
Did Akhenaten's Founding Of Akhetaten Cause A Malaria Epidemic, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.
Did Akhenaten's Founding Of Akhetaten Cause A Malaria Epidemic, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.
Faculty Journal Articles
This paper presents and discusses evidence for changes in the environment that would have taken place at the site of Amarna, ancient Akhetaten, during the rapid building and populating of the city in the reign of King Akhenaten. The evidence suggests that the effect of the founding of this city, with all the consequences of a changed environment on both sides of the river, could have been responsible for a malaria epidemic. This scenario is backed up by the high prevalence of signs of malaria in the skeletal material from Amarna, as well as in the short-lived history of the …
Encouraging Entrepreneurship And Innovation Through Regulatory Democratization, Seth C. Oranburg
Encouraging Entrepreneurship And Innovation Through Regulatory Democratization, Seth C. Oranburg
Scholarly Articles
Law and economics scholars agree that business regulations have a disproportionately negative impact on entrepreneurship and innovation. It would be a significant problem indeed if the very nature of regulation inhibits this kind of growth and creativity. This view of the problem suggests that the only way to increase innovation would be to decrease regulation.
Yet this view is too general. When examined more closely, all regulations are not created equal. Regulations can be formulated as rules or standards, and they can be simple or complex. Moreover, some rules are easily understood by computers and are thus suitable for automated …
Altered Speech: A Case-Study Of Identity-Driven Speech In A Dissociative Identity Disorder System, Sarah Domin
Altered Speech: A Case-Study Of Identity-Driven Speech In A Dissociative Identity Disorder System, Sarah Domin
Scripps Senior Theses
The field of sociolinguistics has long been interested in how speech differs across groups. These studies have been focused on how demographic factors like class, race, and geographical region alter speech patterns. However, more recently, the agency of individuals to use language as a tool to construct a certain identity or persona has been highlighted (e.g., Podesva 2007; Eckert 1989; Eckert 2008). These studies are limited due to the nature of their methods, relying on either one individual with a limited scope of characteristics or on a larger group of people with many different variables at play other than identity. …
Religious Studies Teachers Perceptions Of The Role Of Religious Literacy In Students' Civic Preparation, John Grant
Religious Studies Teachers Perceptions Of The Role Of Religious Literacy In Students' Civic Preparation, John Grant
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of teachers of religion courses who use the study of religion to prepare students for the pluralistic society awaiting them. The primary questions addressed in this study were focused on perceptions of religious studies teachers regarding their definition of religious literacy, the content of a religiously literate person, the civic consequences of an education that ignores religious literacy, and how religious literacy might inculcate civic values. The participants of this study included five purposefully selected religious studies teachers from five different school types (i.e., Christian, Islamic, Jewish, nonsectarian, public). These …

This dissertation follows a three-article format. The purpose of this study was to explore the components of K-12 urban or suburban, private/charter, and public schools to determine if the setting is prepared to implement holistic approaches to support Black girls to meet there social and emotional needs. The first article uncovers the perceptions of teachers not feeling prepared to implement a social-emotional learning environment through a culturally responsive pedagogical framework. The second article focuses on the impact Black educators have on Black students within the academic setting from a phenomenological lens, lived experiences were shared to understand the passion, purpose, …

Ecolinguistically Informed Critical Discourse Analysis Of Political Speech On Climate Change Policies In The United States Of America, Othman Khalid Al Shboul
Ecolinguistically Informed Critical Discourse Analysis Of Political Speech On Climate Change Policies In The United States Of America, Othman Khalid Al Shboul
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study uses a mixed-methods approach to explore how climate change is conceptualized in the politics of the United States from the perspective of Ecolinguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis. I analyzed all the statements and letters issued by the governors and mayors who opposed the American president, Donald Trump, when he announced that he would withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement that 195 countries around the world signed. The qualitative analysis employs Critical Metaphor Analysis to investigate politicians metaphorical choices made to influence public opinion and influence policies about climate change in the U.S. These types of metaphors …
Chasing Equity: Analyzing The Impact Of Education Reform Policies On Black Students In Urban Schools, Rhonda Anthony
Chasing Equity: Analyzing The Impact Of Education Reform Policies On Black Students In Urban Schools, Rhonda Anthony
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation is a three-article exploration of the concept of educational equity and how it impacts Black students in urban schools. Through the framework of Social Construction Theory, the concept of equity is explored through a series of discourse and document analyses. The first article uses a corpus methodology to analyze the Race to the Top (RTTT) applications of the 12 states that won the competitive grant that encouraged massive education reform law and policies alongside submitted ESSA plans of these same states to identify strategies used to combat barriers to success for urban, Black students. The second article uses …

A Dissertation On The Testing Approaches Of Autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems, Cody Behles
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract:Testing is among the most critical parts of the development of any system. As technology becomes more advanced, and we continue towards a world defined by integration of advanced features and capabilities (such as being able to think for themselves) in every object, the ability to test these objects becomes infinitely more complicated. This work addresses the testing of autonomous cyber-physical systems (TACPS) by examining current industry best practices as ascertained from interviews with professionals working in the field. Through the interview data provided this work seeks a better understanding of how these systems are tested, the integrated approaches used …

Traumatized Characters In Traumatized Environments: A Look At Repression And Horror, Rebecca L. Goldman
Traumatized Characters In Traumatized Environments: A Look At Repression And Horror, Rebecca L. Goldman
Scripps Senior Theses
Using Sigmund Freud’s theory of ‘return of the repressed’ as a theoretical basis, this paper takes a case study approach using three critically acclaimed horror films. These films include Nicholas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1974), Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), and Ari Aster’s Midsommar (2019). With use of each film, the interaction between the repressed trauma of the protagonists’ and the film environment is explored, utilizing the notion that repressed trauma will always manifest itself as a symptom of the unconscious mind. Supporting theories include Slavoj Zizek’s notion that dreams must be read in terms of their form, stemming from …
Unaccepted Streets In Bayview Hunters Point: Addressing Spatial Injustice Through Public Open Space, Clare Blackwell
Unaccepted Streets In Bayview Hunters Point: Addressing Spatial Injustice Through Public Open Space, Clare Blackwell
Scripps Senior Theses
Bayview Hunters Point is at the epicenter of environmental justice issues in San Francisco. The district has historically been the location of the city’s most polluting industries, as well as some of its poorest residents and its greatest concentration of public housing. As the city’s zoning developed over the twentieth century, the southeastern neighborhood on the bay became a patchwork of industrial and residential parcels of land, fueling spatial injustice, in particular a lack of access to public open space.
Increasing greenspace would likely address spatial injustice in Bayview Hunters Point. However, green gentrification–the consequence of resident displacement as a …
