Space In Transition: A Design Exploration Of A Transition Space In Ban Plainern, Tengzhou Feng Jan 2020

Space In Transition: A Design Exploration Of A Transition Space In Ban Plainern, Tengzhou Feng

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis concerns a methodology to study transition spaces in traditional Thai houses. The author questions how to inherit and develop traditional architecture for the future generations. Transition spaces of Thai houses are chosen as the places to observe how materials, proportions, spatial compositions, light, shade and shadow affect architecture itself. They represent a relationship between man-made and nature with respect to environment, culture and time. Literature reviews are a supplement to the analytical methods to study architectural spaces and forms of Colin Rowe, Peter Eisenman, Le Corbusier and Juhani Pallasmaa. Then, the methodology is applied to analyse two case …

Self-Other Encounters And Ordeals Of Aspiration Among Young Moroccan Immigrants In Spain, Maisa C. Taha Jan 2020

Self-Other Encounters And Ordeals Of Aspiration Among Young Moroccan Immigrants In Spain, Maisa C. Taha

Department of Anthropology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

North African youth who join their parents in Spain in childhood or adolescence face challenges unlike those of the older generation. Moving through institutional spaces and processes, from public school to post-secondary training and work, first-generation youth exercise cultural and linguistic bridging capacities while facing continual challenges as representatives of a racially stigmatized minority. This article focuses on life story narratives from Moroccan young people living in the southeast municipality of El Ejido since the late 1990s to highlight how Self-Other encounters ‒ a well-established framework in Maghrebine ethnography ‒ and goals of upward mobility shape experiences of coming-of-age in …

Considering A Domestic Terror Statute And Its Alternatives, Francesca Laguardia Jan 2020

Considering A Domestic Terror Statute And Its Alternatives, Francesca Laguardia

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Recent years have seen an increase in right-wing extremist violence within the United States, which has highlighted the disparities in law enforcement’s handling of “international” as opposed to “domestic” terrorism. Public, legal, and law enforcement commenters have begun calling for a “domestic terrorism statute,” arguing that the lack of such a statute is the largest hurdle in prosecuting domestic terrorists. This Essay explains that the primary cause of the disparity in prosecutions between domestic and international terrorists is not a lack of a domestic terrorism statute but rather the lack of a generalized terrorism statute and the failure to designate …

The Shape Of The Filipino Church To Come: A Vision Of Renewal In Filipino Sacramental Worship, Michael Demetrius H. Asis Jan 2020

The Shape Of The Filipino Church To Come: A Vision Of Renewal In Filipino Sacramental Worship, Michael Demetrius H. Asis

Theology Department Faculty Publications

What will it take to make sacramental worship finally inspire genuine Christian discipleship? This book offers a radical vision of renewing current Filipino sacramental understanding and practice. Grounded in a renewed vision of "church" consistent with Vatican II ecclesiology, this work examines the crucial link between worship and disciplehip, so that our prayer, whether private or public, truly becomes, now and in the future, the "source and summit" of all Christian life.

Competing Forces Of Withdrawal And Disease Avoidance In The Risk Networks Of People Who Inject Drugs, Elspeth Ready, Patrick Habecker, Roberto Abadie, Bilal Khan, K. Dombrowski Jan 2020

Competing Forces Of Withdrawal And Disease Avoidance In The Risk Networks Of People Who Inject Drugs, Elspeth Ready, Patrick Habecker, Roberto Abadie, Bilal Khan, K. Dombrowski

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

We analyze a network of needle-sharing ties among 117 people who inject drugs (PWID) in rural Puerto Rico, using exponential random graph modeling to examine whether network members engage in partner restriction to lower their risk of contracting HIV or hepatitis C (HCV), or in informed altruism to prevent others from contracting these infections. Although sharing of used syringes is a significant risk factor for transmission of these diseases among PWID, we find limited evidence for partner restriction or informed altruism in the network of reported needle-sharing ties. We find however that sharing of needles is strongly reciprocal, and individuals …

Contextualizing The Covid-19 Era In Puerto Rico: Compounding Disasters And Parallel Pandemics, Catherine Garcia, Fernando I. Rivera, Marc A. Garcia, Giovani Burgos, María P. Aranda Jan 2020

Contextualizing The Covid-19 Era In Puerto Rico: Compounding Disasters And Parallel Pandemics, Catherine Garcia, Fernando I. Rivera, Marc A. Garcia, Giovani Burgos, María P. Aranda

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Objectives: The COVID-19 outbreak has worsened the ongoing economic crisis in Puerto Rico by creating "parallel pandemics" that exacerbate socioeconomic and health inequalities experienced by its most vulnerable residents. Unfortunately, conditions on the island have been largely overlooked by national media outlets and the mainland U.S. population. Thus, this research report aims to draw attention to the disparate burden multiple and compounding disasters have on older island-dwelling Puerto Rican adults’ health and well-being.

Methods: We characterize the lived experiences of the older population in Puerto Rico by incorporating data from numerous sources and contextualizing the effects of compounding disasters, the …

The Burden Of Unintentional Drowning: Global, Regional And National Estimates Of Mortality From The Global Burden Of Disease 2017 Study, Richard Charles Franklin, Amy E. Peden, Erin B. Hamilton, Catherine Bisignano

Open Access archive

Background: Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related mortality globally. Unintentional drowning (International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 10 codes W65-74 and ICD9 E910) is one of the 30 mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive causes of injury-related mortality in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study. This study's objective is to describe unintentional drowning using GBD estimates from 1990 to 2017. Methods: Unintentional drowning from GBD 2017 was estimated for cause-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs), age, sex, country, region, Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintile, and trends from 1990 to 2017. GBD 2017 used standard GBD methods for estimating mortality …

The prime objective of the current study is to analyse the success rate of entrepreneurs who had formal entrepreneurship education. The second purpose of this paper is to find the factors determining (from education) the success of entrepreneurship education. Entrepreneurship education has grown significantly as manifested in the growth student enrolment and production of formal entrepreneurship institutions. United Arab Emirates (UAE) is not an exception to these developments in higher education. The scope of the current study is limited to UAE. In UAE there are differences in the education specialisations across universities from a single course to a combination of …

The Ethical Challenges Of Field Research: A Personal Narrative, Jagriti Gangopadhyay Jan 2020

The Ethical Challenges Of Field Research: A Personal Narrative, Jagriti Gangopadhyay

Open Access archive

One of the biggest components of the disciplines, Sociology and Social Anthropology is fieldwork. Despite the significance of fieldwork as a method, there is limited scholarship on the myriad experiences of the fieldworker. This commentary emphasises the need to document field narratives of researchers, while using the personal field experience of the author as a prototype. The author encountered these experiences in 2016 as part of an independent and self-funded study (Understanding aging in old age homes of Delhi, India) that she had conducted in Delhi post the submission of her PhD thesis titled: Three essays in aging: Social capital, …

Movement And Place-Making In A Monsoon Terrain, Deepta Sateesh Jan 2020

Movement And Place-Making In A Monsoon Terrain, Deepta Sateesh

Open Access archive

The territorialization of the Western Ghats, India, is an act of colonial power either by settled or marginalized particular peoples, practices, and ecologies, privileging a wet-dry binary and spa-tializing a monsoon landscape. The environment of the Western Ghats, in particular, has been politicized and polarized. Today, indigenous peoples and other 'forest dwellers' have been compromised through the inherited colonial framework; they are excluded by conservation action as is their knowledge that is based on dynamic everyday relationships with place. Efforts to be inclusive are fraught with inadequacies of colonial imaging and use the language that continue to objectify and spatialize …

Lexical Semantics: Mapping Gender And Cultural Geography In Ursula K. Le Guin’S Speculative Fiction, Anupa Lewis, Padma Rani Jan 2020

Lexical Semantics: Mapping Gender And Cultural Geography In Ursula K. Le Guin’S Speculative Fiction, Anupa Lewis, Padma Rani

Open Access archive

This article attempts to contextualize how the idea of geography plays a significant role in speculative fiction. The resultant contention is that the gender dynamics of space and place, regarded in the setting of literary anthropology, can be studied through a close examination of lexical and semantic patterns. Stemming from this line of enquiry, the article revisits Ursula K. Le Guin’s novelette “Buffalo Gals, Won’t You Come Out Tonight” and discusses the striking co-relations that emerge when reading into the underlying intersections of gender geography and cultural geography.

Estimating Global Injuries Morbidity And Mortality: Methods And Data Used In The Global Burden Of Disease 2017 Study, Spencer L. James, Chris D. Castle, Zachary V. Dingels, Jack T. Fox

Open Access archive

Background: While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria. Methods: In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality …

Appealing To Human Intuitions To Reduce Animal Abuse, Yzar S. Wehbe, Todd K. Shackelford Jan 2020

Appealing To Human Intuitions To Reduce Animal Abuse, Yzar S. Wehbe, Todd K. Shackelford

Animal Sentience

Social scientists may be able to find ways to positively affect people’s evolved moral compasses, thereby doing the planet and its inhabitants a great kindness. They could help to shape a constituency that is increasingly opposed to animal abuse in its largest-scale manifestations, factory farming and wet markets. This would, in turn, motivate people to elect ethical leaders who view inaction with regard to animal abuse as a serious moral and medical mistake, if only indirectly due to factory farming’s exacerbation of the threats zoonoses pose to humans.

Songs, Storytellers, And Science: An Examination Of Long-Distance Interaction In The Cook Islands, Cyrus Hulen Jan 2020

Songs, Storytellers, And Science: An Examination Of Long-Distance Interaction In The Cook Islands, Cyrus Hulen

Senior Independent Study Theses

It is widely accepted in Polynesian archaeology that contact between island groups persisted after first peopling but declined over time. However, there is not a clear sense of how the dynamics and directionality of interaction change over time. Archaeological discussions of interaction in the Cook Islands often focus on quantitative materialist data. While this is certainly valuable and critical to archaeology as a scientific discipline, I see this discussion as an opportunity to incorporate more fully more qualitative or ontologically driven data from other fields of anthropology. I intend to explore the geography, chronology, and ontology of long-distance interaction between …

The Problem-Solving Mode: Social Scientists Back Home And The Limits Of Critique, Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu Jan 2020

The Problem-Solving Mode: Social Scientists Back Home And The Limits Of Critique, Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

Abundant debates on the problematic positioning of intellectuals in the Global South are typically confined to migrant scholars and to the insider/outsider binary vis-à-vis their object/subject of study. Yet intellectuals back home—both those returning and those who never left—must also forge through the fraught politics of location and epistemic privilege as the other side of the same coin. Nowhere is the politics of location perhaps more striking than in the social sciences and among social scientists based in the Global South who have mostly been trained in Western universities or in Westernized local universities. As academics who mobilize knowledge in …

The Manila Galleon: Cradle Of A Fusion Culture, Fernando N. Zialcita Jan 2020

The Manila Galleon: Cradle Of A Fusion Culture, Fernando N. Zialcita

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

Mainstream Filipino culture in Luzon and Visayas is questioned by foreigners and even Filipinos for not being Asian enough." What is overlooked is that the singularity of such a culture lies in that it was born during the Galleon Trade (1565-1820) -- an enterprise that; for the first time in world history; linked the four continents together with Manila as its hub in Asia. Merchants from all the continents congregated in Manila; according to eyewitnesses. Hence; aside from Spanish influences; also present are Chinese; Indian; Japanese and Mexican Indian influences upon Filipino culture ; basically of Austronesian stock; to this …

HIV-related stigma among people living with HIV (PLHIV) is associated with worse health outcomes. We used longitudinal data from a multisite cohort in South Africa to assess changes over time in stigma after HIV diagnosis and determine whether antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation is associated with stigma reduction. We administered the Internalized AIDS-Related Stigma Scale (IARSS, a six-item dichotomous scale questionnaire) at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months to newly diagnosed ART-eligible participants between 2014 and 2015. A confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the IARSS contained a four-item internalized stigma factor (α = .80) and a two-item disclosure concerns factor (α …

Socio-Hydrology: An Interplay Of Design And Self-Organization In A Multilevel World, David J. Yu, Heejun Chang, Taylor T. Davis, Vicken Hillis, Landon T. Marston, Woi Sok Oh, Murugesu Sivapalan, Timothy M. Waring

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

The emerging field of socio-hydrology is a special case of social-ecological systems research that focuses on coupled human-water systems, exploring how the hydrologic cycle and human cultural traits coevolve and how such coevolutions lead to phenomena of relevance to water security and sustainability. As such, most problems tackled by socio-hydrology involve some aspects of engineering design, such as large-scale water infrastructure, and self-organization in a broad context, such as cultural change at the population level and the hydrologic shift at the river basin or aquifer level. However, within the field of socio-hydrology, it has been difficult to find general theories …

Proper Conjugation Of Bodies: Chastity, Age, And Care Work In Sri Lankan Migrants’ Families, Michele Ruth Gamburd Jan 2020

Proper Conjugation Of Bodies: Chastity, Age, And Care Work In Sri Lankan Migrants’ Families, Michele Ruth Gamburd

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Physical and symbolic aspects of bodies limit the migration trajectories of female domestic workers from a Buddhist community in coastal Sri Lanka. Government regulations and family decisions regarding women’s overseas labour draw upon and in turn influence discourses about gender, sexuality, age, health, and class. This ethnographic analysis illustrates that local norms task women with nurturing the brains of babies, preserving the chastity of teenage daughters, caring for frail elders, and preventing their working-class husbands from overindulging in liquor or having sex with other women. Successful social reproduction depends on the proper conjunctions of bodies in the extended family. Corporeal …

Judgements Of Attributional Responsibility, Social Dominance Orientation, And The Insanity Defense., Stephanie S. Souter Jan 2020

Judgements Of Attributional Responsibility, Social Dominance Orientation, And The Insanity Defense., Stephanie S. Souter

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Issues of race, law, and mental health meet at a cross-section when it comes to cases involving the not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI) plea in which the defendant is a member of a marginalized group. Although the duty of a juror is to reach a fair and unbiased verdict, the reality is that there are many ways that a person’s thoughts can be biased without them being aware of this (Bargh, 2001). This mock juror experiment (the first of its kind), investigated the role that Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) and attributional responsibility has in the success of NGRI …

Assessing Methods For Estimating Biological Sex From Subadult Skeletal Elements, Dorota Zabnicka Jan 2020

Assessing Methods For Estimating Biological Sex From Subadult Skeletal Elements, Dorota Zabnicka

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

While methods for estimating the sex of adult skeletons are relatively accurate, these methods are often inconclusive when applied to subadults (non-adults), especially when many secondary sexual characteristics have not fully developed. Furthermore, existing methods for subadults are often tested on samples with relatively homogenous ancestries, calling into question their reliability in more diverse populations. This thesis reviewed techniques for estimating sex in subadult skeletal remains, and the most promising methods were retested on individuals of known sex between ages 3 and 17 years (n=39, 14 males, 25 females) from the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection. Data collection included measurements of the …

The Geographies Of Intermediation: Labor Intermediaries, Labor Migration, And Cane Harvesting In Rural Western India, Pronoy Rai Jan 2020

The Geographies Of Intermediation: Labor Intermediaries, Labor Migration, And Cane Harvesting In Rural Western India, Pronoy Rai

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, I explain the role of labor intermediaries in the weaving of capital–labor relations in capitalist agro-business. I do so by focusing on migration infrastructure or the vertical network of labor intermediaries who facilitate labor recruitment from migrant home villages and migrant labor disciplining on cane fields in rural western India, where the laborers are brought seasonally to harvest sugarcane. I show how the role of labor intermediaries cannot be understood by containing them within the villainous stereotypes associated with brokers. Intermediaries are embedded within the labor geographies of commodity production where capital accumulation requires the downward transferring …
