Telling Images: Forced Disappearance And Territorial Displacement In Recent Mexican And Colombian Documentary Graphic Novels, Felipe Gómez
Telling Images: Forced Disappearance And Territorial Displacement In Recent Mexican And Colombian Documentary Graphic Novels, Felipe Gómez
Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)
Territorial displacements, stolen lands, repression, targeted assassinations, and forced disappearances among rural communities in Mexico and Colombia are constant threats that generate complex and urgent questions on the fragile conditions in which the residents of these communities live their day-to-day lives. In this article, I examine recent graphic novels that take an ethical stand to discuss local events in their connections to drug-trafficking, para-State, and other contemporary forms of violence. While there are divergent reasons, conditions and challenges for the creation, distribution, and reception of these graphic novels in such contexts, their authors use similar semiotic and literary mechanisms to …
Language, Memory, Place: Building On Disappearance, Alexi Butts
Language, Memory, Place: Building On Disappearance, Alexi Butts
Scripps Senior Theses
Language, Memory, Place is an investigation into clay’s therapeutic and tactile qualities. When combined, these attributes make clay an effective tool for priming spoken communication, increasing connectivity and serving as a tangible means of accessing and physically grounding abstract memories of home.
Conducted in France throughout the summer of 2019, my research set out to engage French speakers in a reflective dialogue on what it means to transform empty spaces into ones filled with feeling and meaning of home. In addition to verbal conversation, I simultaneously directed individuals of different ages, origins and living in seven different cities through an …
Consciousness Vis-À-Vis The Restraints Of Language, Angela-Maria Martinez
Consciousness Vis-À-Vis The Restraints Of Language, Angela-Maria Martinez
Honors Program Theses
In my work, I explore the overlooked complexities of linguistics within the languages I speak and I examine the philosophical ideologies that surround the different perspectives offered by those languages I do not understand. As a bilingual, I have often pondered about the languages I speak fluently and how their differences allowed me to understand my surroundings in distinctive ways. Through the use of peaceful colors and audio, a combination of abstract and minimalist imagery, and a time-based medium, I seek to reveal the undiscovered possibilities of spoken language. It is through tranquil imagery and audio that I attempt to …
Using Bourdieu In Communication And Forensics Research, Stephen P. Hagan
Using Bourdieu In Communication And Forensics Research, Stephen P. Hagan
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
As norms in the forensics community are often unspoken and have few identifiable starting points, habitus and Bourdieu seems an apt place to begin an analysis. Further, such analysis can serve as a potential case study for broader applications of Bourdieu to communication studies. Thus, my goal is to provide an overview of Bourdieu’s work through his interconnecting ideas of habitus, field, and cultural capital and use those concepts to discuss college forensics as a case study of how communicative norms and attitudes are shaped in small collective social structures such as forensics. Building from that application, I explore ways …
The Impact Of A Supplemental Instruction Program On Diverse Peer Leaders At A Two-Year Institution, Sarah Hoiland, Silvia Reyes, Antonio Varelas
The Impact Of A Supplemental Instruction Program On Diverse Peer Leaders At A Two-Year Institution, Sarah Hoiland, Silvia Reyes, Antonio Varelas
Publications and Research
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a peer-led academic support program in which SI Leaders help students develop study habits and note-taking strategies as well as facilitate test preparation. While the effects of SI on students receiving the instruction have been thoroughly investigated, there have been far fewer studies that have assessed the impact of SI on its Leaders. Furthermore, research on Leaders has yet to adequately consider community colleges or Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), or to employ qualitative methodologies. Thus, this paper details an SI program developed at a two-year HSI and the impact of the SI Leaders’ experience via qualitative data …
Book Proposal: Reimagining Higher Education: A Guide To Creating The Competent College Graduate, Molly Kerby
Book Proposal: Reimagining Higher Education: A Guide To Creating The Competent College Graduate, Molly Kerby
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Given the climate of distrust, colleges and universities are examining strategies to enable them to remain relevant. Efforts to answer the recent outcry for productive, effective, and evidencedbased outcomes include adapting curricula and degree programs to better prepare graduates for employment. Competency-based education (CBE) programs are at the forefront of these approaches. Although not a new concept, CBE has shifted from its vocational training roots to its current attention on student results. The acquisition of competence requires an engaged learner who practices self-reflection (Dreyfus, 2004). Albanese, et al. (2008) suggest competencies should be outcome focused, emphasize applied-learning, and be measurable. …

The Phenomenology Of Accompaniment: A Journey Of Transformation, Siobhan O'Donoghue
The Phenomenology Of Accompaniment: A Journey Of Transformation, Siobhan O'Donoghue
Dissertations
Accompaniment is a humanitarian approach that seeks to ameliorate the suffering of individuals and communities that are vulnerable, and often struggling with the effects of collective traumas. Despite the fact that accompaniment models are being utilized in various parts of the world, the topic has seldom been explored in the literature. the purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experience of accompaniment for migrants. Purposeful sampling was used to identify 28 participants who represented both accompaniers and the accompanied. Data were collected through 13 interviews and 3 focus groups and analyzed using Moustakas' (1994) transcendental phenomenological method …
Three-Dimensional Geometric Morphometric Sex Determination And Modeled Fragmentary Analysis Of The Human Pubic Bone, Katherine Scot Baca
Three-Dimensional Geometric Morphometric Sex Determination And Modeled Fragmentary Analysis Of The Human Pubic Bone, Katherine Scot Baca
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Geometric morphometrics has become a more popular method in anthropology as three-dimensional data and research become more widely recognized and accessible. This research provides a refined method utilizing 3-D geometric morphometric analysis to determine sex from the human pubic bone. The study used a sample of N=378 individual pubic bones from the University of New Mexico Maxwell Documented Collection. Eight landmarks were digitized on each individual bone using a Microscribe Digitizer. Results from the Principal Components Analysis provide promising clustering between male and female groups, as well as indications that the method may be ancestry-specific, and that parity may have …

Woven By The Grandmothers: The Development Of The National Museum Of The American Indian Throughout The 1990s, Lucy Winokur
Scripps Senior Theses
In 1994, the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) opened the George Gustav Heye Center in New York City, the first of what would be three campuses. Ten years later, in 2004, the NMAI opened its main campus in Washington, D.C., already having cemented their place as leaders in a movement to center indigenous voices within museums housing indigenous material culture. By examining the history of the NMAI from the first acquisition of George Gustav Heye to its earliest approaches to exhibition design and collections management policy in the 1990s, it is possible to track the development of the …

The Contrasting Fates Of French Canadian And Indigenous Constitutionalism: British North America, 1760-1867, Philip Girard
Articles & Book Chapters
In the century after the fall of New France, both Indigenous peoples of Canada and French Canadians could be described as colonised peoples. Yet the treatment of each group's pre-existing laws and the ways in which each found its constitutional demands recognised (or not) varied considerably. In spite of significant rebellions in 1837-1838, French Canadians went on to achieve a high degree of autonomy within the province of Quebec in the British North America Act 1867. Meanwhile, intercultural legal arrangements with Indigenous peoples, such as the Covenant Chain, which could be termed constitutional, were gradually undermined, ignored and forgotten. This …
Towards Sickness: Developing A Critical Disability Archival Methodology, Gracen Brilmyer
Towards Sickness: Developing A Critical Disability Archival Methodology, Gracen Brilmyer
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
Although archival records on disability—such as medical, institutional, and freak show records—can facilitate in telling one side of disability history, these records often omit the voices of disabled people. Considering the abundance of such documentation as well as how sick and disabled people may be difficult to locate in historical records, this article trains a critical lens on archival absences and partialities. By foregrounding the experiences of sick and disabled writers, activists, artists, and scholars alongside critical disability studies, this article conceptualizes “sickness” to develop a critical disability archival methodology. By illuminating the various ways in which sickness and disability …

Press Ganey survey data are used by institutions to understand patient experiences in the emergency department (ED). The present mixed-methods retrospective cohort study examined the effects of hallway placement, pain management reporting, communication approaches, time spent in the ED, and other demographic variables on predicting satisfaction ratings of doctors, nurses, and overall ED care. A total of 4940 patient responses between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2017, were analyzed from 2 EDs associated with an academic institution and tertiary care center. Consensus coding was used to qualitatively capture patient responses that relate to communication issues pertaining to care/empathy and …

A History Of Fire At Hitchcock Nature Center, Western Iowa, Reconstructed Through An Analysis Of Macroscopic Charcoal And Soil-Magnetic Properties, Christoph E. Geiss, Nicole E. Towner
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
We analyzed soil-magnetic properties and macroscopic charcoal abundances for two soil profiles located in Hitchcock Nature Center (HNC), Honey Creek, Iowa. Both profiles are located on valley bottoms in the Loess Hills of western Iowa and developed in redeposited Peoria loess. Site HNC 15D is located on an elevated stream terrace and contains a moderately well-developed modern soil. Site HNC 15G is located on a valley floor and consists of a poorly developed modern soil and a series of buried soil horizons. Both sites record consistently low charcoal concentrations of 0.5 mm2 /g in prehistoric deposits. While site HNC 15D …

A Descriptive Multicultural Phenomenology For Culturally Responsive Leadership, Christopher J. Kazanjian, David Rutledge, Sandra M. Gandarilla
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
As public schools in the United States continue to diversify in culture, educational leaders committed to multicultural education seek qualitative research methodologies for understanding phenomena in order to build culturally responsive leadership initiatives and interventions. This paper argues that a phenomenological research methodology is appropriate and relevant to understand cultural phenomena in the 21st century school. To serve this, the authors elaborate on a descriptive multicultural phenomenological research methodology for educational leaders. A phenomenological framework positions educational leaders to understand the nature and essence of personal experience. This approach will help educational leaders better understand the experiences of the diverse …

Decoding Gender In The Selected Works Of Salman Rushdie, Zubaidah Binti Mohamed Shaburdin
Decoding Gender In The Selected Works Of Salman Rushdie, Zubaidah Binti Mohamed Shaburdin
Theses
This thesis examines how ideologies such as feminism and patriarchy operate within language by providing a detailed analysis of five of Salman Rushdie’s novels, Midnight’s Children, Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Ground Beneath Her Feet and The Enchantress of Florence. It is concerned with the changes in Rushdie’s use of language and the effect of this on the way gender is constructed in the selected texts. His novels offer a critique of contemporary Western culture’s understanding of gender, identity, politics, philosophy and religion. Although Rushdean scholarship is often concerned with identity politics, this thesis expands the discussion by critically engaging …
The Extent To Which A Professional Development Program Can Support Caring Nursing Practice In Western Australian Hospitals, Tonia Naylor
The Extent To Which A Professional Development Program Can Support Caring Nursing Practice In Western Australian Hospitals, Tonia Naylor
Theses
Continuous professional development (CPD) has been purported to be able to enhance and support caring nursing practice; however, the relationship has never been studied in Western Australia. CPD is used in Australia as an overarching term. It includes three types of study leave; accredited courses, training with defence force reserves, and professional development (PD). The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which a professional development program can support caring nursing practice in Western Australian (WA) hospitals.
A PD program consisting of a one-day Master Class (MC) on caring nursing practice with additional and optional on-line reflective …
The Paradoxes Of Defensive Medicine, Michael J. Saks, Stephan Landsman
The Paradoxes Of Defensive Medicine, Michael J. Saks, Stephan Landsman
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
For decades, “defensive medicine” has been the leading argument driving reforms of medical malpractice laws throughout the United States. Defensive medicine is the presumed practice of administering excessive tests and treatments as a stratagem for reducing healthcare providers’ risk of malpractice liability, despite the absence of any expected benefit for the patient. The practice is widely believed to exist throughout American healthcare as a response to fears of malpractice litigation, and thought to be enormously wasteful of healthcare dollars. In consequence, it has become a justification for law reforms insulating the healthcare industry from tort liability. These claims are promoted …

Ageism is a societal concern that greatly affects the social, emotional, physical, and mental health of older adults. One way to decrease ageist attitudes and improve the treatment of older adults is to address and improve age stereotypes among young adults. Using data from students participating in an intergenerational digital-learning program, the present study investigated change in students’ stereotypes of older adults and aging. We examined change from pre- and post-scores in student attitudes toward older adults and the type of adjectives used to describe older adults. We also analyzed responses to open-ended questions about changes in perception of older …

Currently the Chinese government has adopted World Health Organization interim target-1 values as the national ambient air quality standards values. However, the population-based evidence was insufficient, especially for the oldest old (aged 80+). We evaluated the association of fine particulate matters (PM2.5) exposure and incidence of disability in activities of daily living (ADL) in 15 453 oldest old in 886 counties/cities in China from 2002 to 2014 using Cox model with penalized splines and competing risk models to evaluate the linear or non-linear association. After adjusting for potential confounders, a J-shaped association existed between PM2.5 exposure with …

In this paper, we discuss dietary and possible medicinal practices of an Early Formative period (2000–1000 BCE) community transitioning from Archaic-style to Formative-style lifeways. The results we present come from the analysis of plant residues, including microbotanical and macrobotanical remains, which were excavated at the village site of La Consentida in coastal Oaxaca, Mexico. Phytoliths and starch grains were recovered by sonication from twenty ceramic and lithic artifacts. The microbotanical analyses identified plant remains from four different families: Bombaceae (flowering plants), Dioscoreaceae (yam family), Fabaceae (bean family), and Poaceae (grasses, including maize). We also report on limited macrobotanical analysis, including …

The production and use of masks at multiple scales and in diverse contexts is a millennia-long tradition in Mesoamerica. In this paper, we explore some implications of Mesoamerican masking practices in light of materiality studies and the archaeology of the senses. We also discuss a collection of 22 masks, miniature masks and representations of masks from the lower Río Verde valley of coastal Oaxaca, Mexico. The iconography of these artefacts as well as their recovery from well-documented archaeological contexts inform our interpretations of masking practices during an approximately 2000-year span of the Formative period (2000 BC–AD 250). Specifically, we argue …

Heroism In The Age Of Consumerism: The Emergence Of A Moral Don Quixote In John Updike’S “A & P”, Zakarya Bezdoode, Eshaq Bezdoode
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper analyzes John Updike’s short story “A & P” in the light of Max Weber’s notion of moral decision-making. A prominent contemporary American story-writer and literary critic, Updike has devoted his fiction to subjects' rational and moral problems in the contemporary consumerist society. Updike’s lifelong probing into the middle classes' lives is a body of fiction that raises questions about determinism, moral decision, and social responsibility, among others. “A & P” is a revealing example of such fiction and one among Updike’s most frequently anthologized short stories. The story, titled after a nationwide American shopping mall in the early …
