Labor In The Field Is Much Changed: The Chickasaws And The Civilization Plan, 1790-1837, Jeffrey D. Washburn
Labor In The Field Is Much Changed: The Chickasaws And The Civilization Plan, 1790-1837, Jeffrey D. Washburn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Between 1790 and 1840, the U.S. federal government instituted its so-called “civilization plan,” which encouraged Southern Indians to embrace republican values, patriarchy, yeoman farming, and individual property rights. The policies included in the civilization plan were highly influential, as the Native South transitioned from an economy built on the deerskin trade into one of cottage industries, plow-based agriculture, and ranching. Through a detailed examination of one Southern Indian community, the Chickasaws, my dissertation defines the civilization plan in terms of the ideology that the federal government envisioned and how the plan was interpreted on the ground level. My work centers …
Holding Space: Learning From A Black Art Organization, Tierney Anne Bamrick
Holding Space: Learning From A Black Art Organization, Tierney Anne Bamrick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Minority-led nonprofit organizations are marginalized in the United States arts sector, analyses of which rely heavily on data from dominant, often White-led institutional arts organizations. This study seeks to understand the experience of a minority-led arts organization in that context. I ask, what does artistic practice – both creative and organizational – look like for this organization? And what are the implications of that practice for the arts sector more broadly? Drawing on over a year of ethnographic work with The Network, a Black-led arts organization in a southern U.S. city, I argue that their asset-focused treatment of place, their …
Illiberalism And Authoritarianism In The American States, James A. Gardner
Illiberalism And Authoritarianism In The American States, James A. Gardner
American University Law Review
Federalism contemplates subnational variation, but in the United States, the nature and significance of that variation has long been contested. In light of the recent turn, globally and nationally, toward authoritarianism, and the concurrent sharp decline in public support not merely for democracy but also for the philosophical liberalism on which democracy rests, it is necessary to discard or to substantially revise prior accounts of the nature of state-to-state variation in the United States. All such accounts implicitly presuppose a common commitment, across the political spectrum, to the core tenets of democratic liberalism, and consequently assume that subnational variations in …

Analysis Of Pellet Patterns And Gsr Produced From Judge Taurus Revolvers, Donald Poon
Analysis Of Pellet Patterns And Gsr Produced From Judge Taurus Revolvers, Donald Poon
Master of Science in Forensic Science Directed Research Projects
The Taurus Judge is a five-shot revolver designed to fire both 410 Bore shotshells and caliber 45 (Long) Colt cartridges. It is marketed as a self-defense firearm by Taurus. As of 2010, the Taurus Judge was “quickly becoming a popular personal defense firearm”.1 Although it has become somewhat popular, the Taurus Judge and its various models have not had many distance determination studies completed and there is still a dearth of information on how these handguns compare with shotguns when looking at range of fire determinations. This study focused on: how barrel length affected pellet spread patterns produced by …
The Coloniality Of Disaster: Race, Empire, And The Temporal Logics Of Emergency In Puerto Rico, Usa, Yarimar Bonilla
The Coloniality Of Disaster: Race, Empire, And The Temporal Logics Of Emergency In Puerto Rico, Usa, Yarimar Bonilla
Publications and Research
This essay uses the case of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico to discuss “the coloniality of disaster”: how catastrophic events like hurricanes, earthquakes, but also other forms political and economic crisis deepen the fault lines of long-existing racial and colonial histories. It argues that disaster capitalism needs to be understood as a form of racio-colonial capitalism and that this in turn requires us to question our understandings of both “resilience” and “recovery.” The article focuses on the “wait of disaster” as a temporal logic of state subjugation and on how Puerto Ricans responded to state abandonment through modes of autogesti …
Influence Of Maternal Eating Attitudes, Behaviors, And Fat Talk On Adolescent, Non-Elite, Competitive-Level Gymnasts, Madisyn Rozner
Influence Of Maternal Eating Attitudes, Behaviors, And Fat Talk On Adolescent, Non-Elite, Competitive-Level Gymnasts, Madisyn Rozner
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Adverse eating attitudes and eating behaviors describe thoughts and actions related to food and body image that increase risk for development for an eating disorder. The term, “fat talk” was defined as, “cultural meanings of talk about weight” and has been used to assess preoccupation with the cultural stigma of weight. Understanding risk factors for the development of adverse thoughts and actions in adolescence is especially important, as disordered cognitions and behaviors often appear in early adolescence. Maternal modeling, children modeling their actions or attitudes based on their mothers, plays a role in the level of risk. Similarly, gymnastics, an …
A Study Of The Contributions Of Fr. Johannes Hofinger S.J. And Msgr. Eugene Kevane To The Catechetical Renewal Of The 20th Century And Their Relevance For Catechesis Today, Ronald Bolster
Theses
The Kerygmatic renewal of the 20th century, facilitated and documented by Fr. Johannes Hofinger, S.J., was launched in response to the recognition that the traditional method of instruction from the catechism was no longer bearing the fruit of lived Christian discipleship. During this period, Msgr. Eugene Kevane associated this decline in effectiveness with the influence of Modernism. The contributions of both were consistent with the conciliar and post-conciliar catechetical interventions of the Catholic Church. Resistance to the Church’s implementation of these interventions demonstrates that the challenge for catechesis today is a contemporary manifestation of the historical tension intrinsic to the …

White-handed gibbons produce loud and acoustically complex songs when interacting with their neighbours or when encountering predators. In both contexts, songs are assembled from a small number of units although their composition differs in context-specific ways. Here, we investigated whether wild gibbons could infer the 'meaning' when hearing exemplars recorded in both contexts (i.e. 'duet songs' vs. 'predator songs'). We carried out a playback experiment by which we simulated the presence of a neighbouring group producing either its duet or a predator song in order to compare subjects' vocal and locomotor responses. When hearing a recording of a duet song, …

Gender Contexts, Dowry And Women's Health In India: A National Multilevel Longitudinal Analysis, Samuel Stroope, Rhiannon A. Kroeger, Jiabin Fan
Faculty Publications
Gender-biased contexts may impact women's lives across a variety of domains. This study examined whether changes in district prevalence of a salient gendered practice - dowry - are associated with changes in poor health for women in India. Two waves of national multilevel panel data were used to assess the relationship between changes in district-level dowry prevalence and changes in self-rated health for 23,785 ever-married women aged 15-50 years. Increased dowry prevalence was found to be associated with increased poor self-rated health for women. This relationship remained when controlling for potentially confounding factors including household socioeconomic status, caste, infrastructure, mobility …

Reitz Or Wrong: An Industrial, Environmental, And Political Analysis Of Evansville’S “Lumber Baron”, Jarrod Koester
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
For nearly two centuries, the history of Evansville, Indiana has remained incomplete as historians and the general public have not recognized some of the key factors responsible for the city’s famed past. The generally accepted history of Evansville, the state’s third-largest city, conveys valiant tales of industrialization, transportation, and successful entrepreneurs who overcame insurmountable odds and left everlasting impressions on the people of the region. While the once-prosperous city was a significant national port and participated heavily in transatlantic and transcontinental trade, Evansville’s historical significance has diminished over the course of the twentieth century. What were once bustling factories, streams …
Women’S Rights As Human Rights: A Study Of Muslim Women’S Reproductive Justice In Contemporary Saudi Arabia And Egypt, Sophia Harris
Women’S Rights As Human Rights: A Study Of Muslim Women’S Reproductive Justice In Contemporary Saudi Arabia And Egypt, Sophia Harris
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Muslim women’s reproductive justice has been formulated through strict applications and interpretations of religious and spiritual texts as well as the legal opinions of Islamic jurists and other trusted members of the Islamic community. I examine a conservative nation’s interpretation of these texts (Saudi Arabia) in comparison to a more liberal nation’s interpretations (Egypt), which are utilized to form policy on Muslim women’s reproductive justice. I also discuss research provided by the United Nations and other international organizations on the subject in each country. The question of justice has been an ongoing and controversial one, especially so for women. When …

How Do People Understand And Communicate Their Sexuality?: Application Of Labels And The Sexuality Spectrum, Mckenna Bunnell, Emelyn Ehrlich, Gillian Van Der Have
Research Days Posters 2020
In the twentieth century, two well-known models, the Kinsey Homosexual-Heterosexual Scale and the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid (KSOG), were proposed to capture the complexity of sexual orientation. Though groundbreaking at the time of their conception, further research has concluded that the scales are flawed, and do not account for many aspects of sexuality. This has been reflected in several studies where subjects expressed their discontent with the current systems of measurement, due to limitations in communicating their sexual orientation and the identification process. For many people, sexuality can fluctuate throughout their lives, and the labeling systems that exist for sexual …

Assumptions About The Nature Of Sexual Attraction And Asexuality, Chloe Cairncross, Alex Rehman-Grosser
Assumptions About The Nature Of Sexual Attraction And Asexuality, Chloe Cairncross, Alex Rehman-Grosser
Research Days Posters 2020
Asexuality is defined as the non-experience of sexual attraction, but if humans are naturally sexual beings then the assumption is that asexuality must not be natural. This research explores the idea of asexuality as part of human nature. We reviewed literature on the topic of asexuality and administered a survey. The survey was released on five different platforms and received nearly 600 responses, the majority from individuals identifying on the asexual spectrum. The survey addressed understandings of asexuality and experiences of both asexual and non-asexual individuals. Almost all survey participants believed that asexuality is natural, however, approximately two-thirds also believed …
Systematic Racism In The U.S.: Disproportionate African American Maternal Mortality Rates, Jillian Karlicek, Connor Barry, Mackenzie Johnson
Systematic Racism In The U.S.: Disproportionate African American Maternal Mortality Rates, Jillian Karlicek, Connor Barry, Mackenzie Johnson
Research Days Posters 2020
Black mothers in the United States have significantly higher mortality rates than all other American racial or ethnic groups, even when factors such as education, income, and overall health are controlled for. We considered whether life experiences of systemic racism contribute to poor maternal health for black women. Through literary analysis and an interview with a medical anthropologist, we found indications that higher incidences of maternal mortality are not due to genetic factors shared among African-American women. Rather, along with other cultural factors, continuous exposure to racism strains the body in ways that negatively impact maternal health. Our research highlights …

Trash-Talking In Soccer: What It Tells Us About Human Nature, Diana Almallah, Max Amram, Kerry Harper
Research Days Posters 2020
Aggressive communication has been receiving more attention, not only in social endeavors, but in sports. Trash talking in athletics is one of the oldest forms of competitiveness, perhaps connecting to an innate human characteristic. We decided to focus on one sport and asked: what role does aggression play in organized soccer? We hypothesized that human nature does impact aggression in sports and our study aimed to investigate that inference. An online survey was sent to coaches and captains of varying schools and levels of soccer and then forwarded to players. The questions were designed to help us understand aggression's role …
Acculturative Stress And Substance Use Among Chinese International Students, Liam Lane
Acculturative Stress And Substance Use Among Chinese International Students, Liam Lane
Research Days Posters 2020
Substance use among domestic US college students has been studied at length, but research surrounding substance use among international students in the US remains minimal. Many international students experience acculturative stress (commonly known as "culture shock") and how students cope with this stress is a topic of interest in promoting their well-being. This research focuses on Chinese international students, in particular, as this demographic is one of the largest international populations on US college campuses. Considering the increased availability of substances to students in the US, Chinese international students may turn to substance use as an outlet for their experienced …

Our studies examine and observe the widespread impact that prescription opioids have left on the United States, with a specific focus on working-class Americans and veterans. By narrowing our reach to Americans who are forced to handle large amounts of physical labor we have found a strong correlation between these workers getting injured on the job and opioid abuse. Finding that the it is generally attributed to overprescription and unnecessary prescription from physicians. The information was drawn from studies, surveys, dissertations and censuses. Observing these works on injuries/trauma caused by these occupations has yielded important information to the origin of …

Archaeologists often use near-surface geophysics or LiDAR-derived topographic imagery in their research. However, rarely are the two integrated in a way that offers a robust understanding of the complex historical palimpsests embedded within a social landscape. In this paper we present an integrated aerial and terrestrial remote sensing program at the Johnston Site, part of the larger Pinson Mounds landscape in the American MidSouth. Our work at Johnston was focused on better understanding the history of human landscape use and change so that we can begin to compare the Johnston Site with other large Middle Woodland (200 BC-AD 500) ceremonial …

Abstract: Food plays a strong part in the formation and maintenance of our identity, and is intimately linked with memory and a sense of home. Meals are an important site of socialisation and the tastes and smells of our childhood often recall the nurture and affirmation of identity received at that time. Individual foodways are anchored in the family, which in turn is embedded in regional foodways and cuisine
Plutarch Reading Plato: Interpretation And Mythmaking In The Early Empire, Collin Miles Hilton
Plutarch Reading Plato: Interpretation And Mythmaking In The Early Empire, Collin Miles Hilton
Bryn Mawr College Dissertations and Theses
Plutarch of Chaeronea, an eminent figure among the Platonists of the early Roman Empire, built his philosophy by continuously drawing frameworks and models from Plato’s dialogues, both in his works dedicated solely to exegesis and his own lively philosophical dialogues. He both interprets Plato and adapts various models from the Platonic dialogues. Each philosopher was especially concerned with problems posed by myth, yet each also employed their own elaborate and imagistic narratives. In this study, I argue two main points. First, Plutarch’s treatment of mythic narratives, in their dangers and their potential uses, is carefully modelled after Plato. Both are …
