Chapter 28: Student-Centered Libraries: Changing Both Expectations And Results, Anu Vedantham
Libraries Scholarship
Sewing machines, ice cream, slam nights and hot-glue guns. Today’s libraries can be surprising places. The word “library” may bring to mind dark wood bookshelves, high ceilings, Gothic architecture and deep silence. In addition to such traditional reading rooms, today’s academic libraries include presentation venues, video studios and spaces that welcome food, naps, social collaboration and mobile phone use. Librarians are no longer gatekeepers of knowledge; they play nuanced roles in guiding effective use of information for scholarship. In this chapter, we consider three theories from psychology: self-efficacy, stereotype threat and growth mindset, and the role of libraries as “the …

Size And Density Of Upside-Down Jellyfish, Cassiopea Sp., And Their Impact On Benthic Fluxes In A Caribbean Lagoon, Chester B. Zarnoch, Noshin Hossain, Erika Fusco, Mary Alldred, Timothy J. Hoellein, Sophia Perdikaris
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
Anthropogenic disturbances may be increasing jellyfish populations globally. Epibenthic jellyfish are ideal organisms for studying this phenomenon due to their sessile lifestyle, broad geographic distribution, and prevalence in near-shore coastal environments. There are few studies, however, that have documented epibenthic jellyfish abundance and measured their impact on ecological processes in tropical ecosystems. In this study, the density and size of the upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea spp.) were measured in Codrington Lagoon, Barbuda. A sediment core incubation study, with and without Cassiopea, also was performed to determine their impact on benthic oxygen and nutrient fluxes. Densities of Cassiopea were 24–168 …

No. 43: Revisiting China’S Supermarket Revolution: Evidence From Nanjing City, Yuan Yuan, Taiyang Zhong, Zhenzhong Si, Xianjin Huang, Jonathan Crush
Hungry Cities Partnership
Like many emerging economies in the Global South, China is experiencing major transformations of its national and local food system characterized by the rise of supermarkets. There has been an ongoing debate on the relationship between the supermarket and the wet market in developing countries. Drawing on data from a city-wide supermarket mapping and surveys conducted in Nanjing in 2019, this paper revisits China’s “supermarketization” process and challenges the prediction of supermarket domination. It reveals that Nanjing’s food retailing system has been shaped by the complementarity and co-evolution of the wet market and the supermarket with great policy support. It …

The Use Of Code-Switching By African-American Teachers In Inner-City Classrooms, Yvonne Wilson
The Use Of Code-Switching By African-American Teachers In Inner-City Classrooms, Yvonne Wilson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Language and its use in classrooms has a significant impact on student motivation and self-perception (Delpit, 1988; Lei, 2009). Even more curious and significant is the motivation of teachers that intentionally use culturally-specific language and affectations, also known as code-switching, as an instructional device. This dissertation will examine the use of code-switching by African-American or Black teachers in urban, non-White classrooms. It will explore the foundations of sociolinguistics, specifically, language as a social construct (Gumperz; 1982; Gal, 2014; Levinson, 2015), as well as a communicative tool. In the span of the research contained in this dissertation, 12 African-American teachers will …

The Care Economy As Alternative Economy, Sandra Sullivan-Dunbar
The Care Economy As Alternative Economy, Sandra Sullivan-Dunbar
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay explores the care economy, defined as activity oriented toward sustaining life and promoting basic well-being, whether that activity is paid or unpaid. The essay finds parallels between Pope Benedict XI’s concerns about neoclassical economics as expressed in Caritas in Veritate and feminist scholarship addressing the care economy. Both Benedict and feminist economists challenge sharp binaries between the market and the state and affirm a spectrum of motives driving economic activity. Both Benedict and feminist economists critique an individualistic, voluntaristic anthropology of self-interest, and both understand true economic development to promote the holistic well-being of all persons. However, Benedict …
When Microcredit Doesn’T Empower Poor Women: Recognition Theory’S Contribution To The Debate Over Adaptive Preferences, David Ingram
When Microcredit Doesn’T Empower Poor Women: Recognition Theory’S Contribution To The Debate Over Adaptive Preferences, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This essay proposes recognition theory as a preferred approach to explaining poor women’s puzzling preference for patriarchal subordination even after they have accessed an ostensibly empowering asset: microfinance. Neither the standard account of adaptive preference offered by Martha Nussbaum nor the competing account of constrained rational choice offered by Harriet Baber satisfactorily explains an important variation of what Serene Khader, in discussing microfinance, dubs the self-subordination social recognition paradox. The variation in question involves women who, refusing to reject the combined socio-economic benefits of patriarchal recognition and empowering microfinance, dissemble their subordination to men. In this situation, women experience …
Recognition And Positive Freedom, David Ingram
Recognition And Positive Freedom, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
A number of well-known Hegel-inspired theorists have recently defended a distinctive type of social freedom that, while bearing some resemblance to Isaiah Berlin’s famous description of positive freedom, takes its bearings from a theory of social recognition rather than a theory of moral self-determination. Berlin himself argued that recognition-based theories of freedom are really not about freedom at all (negatively or positively construed) but about solidarity, More strongly, he argued that recognition-based theories of freedom, like most accounts of solidarity, oppose what Kant originally understood to be the essence of positive freedom, namely the setting of volitional ends in accordance …

Reconciling Past And Present, Religion And Sexuality: W. H. Auden’S Proto-Queer Theology And The Queer Christian Movement, Aaron Bisson
Reconciling Past And Present, Religion And Sexuality: W. H. Auden’S Proto-Queer Theology And The Queer Christian Movement, Aaron Bisson
Undergraduate Review
The 20th-century British poet W. H. Auden is an interesting case when viewed through a queer lens because his expansive career brims with homoerotic (and equally homosexual) undertones. Given the historic persecution of homosexuals and others proclaimed “deviants” in his lifetime, it is not surprising that Auden guarded himself by masking sentiments regarding his sexuality below the surface of his writing, though not so much that one could not detect it if aware of the coded jargon of certain queer communities (Bozorth 709). What Auden has said regarding his sexuality—in both his poetry and prose—varies over time, creating difficulties in …

Good Dances Make Good Guests: Dance, Animation And Sovereign Assertion In ‘Amis Country, Taiwan, Dj W. Hatfield
Good Dances Make Good Guests: Dance, Animation And Sovereign Assertion In ‘Amis Country, Taiwan, Dj W. Hatfield
Faculty Works
Within the context of official multiculturalism and the promotion of tourism to improve the economic prospects of Taiwanese Indigenous people, ritual dances of ‘Amis/Pangcah people, known as malikoda, have become sites of conflict concerning ritual propriety and performance. Although as participatory practices, malikoda can never be performed for an audience, they have served to mediate outside power, including but not limited to ancestral spirits and political figures. However, whether and how those outside ‘Amis communities can malikoda remains subject to debate. Malikoda animates a model of Indigenous sovereignty, which can flexibly incorporate external forces that impinge on ‘Amis communities. …

Baudrillard And The Viral Violence Of Cyber Security, Alex Rivera
Baudrillard And The Viral Violence Of Cyber Security, Alex Rivera
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This paper explores Jean Baudrillard’s theorization on war and communication, connecting it to recent developments in the field of cyber security. With the important elevation of military forces such as the United States Cyber Command, critical theory needs to interrogate the increasing stature and seriousness of the cyber domain in global military strategies. Baudrillard’s critique shifts the focus from simple military strategies to the globe’s consumption of the information that is offered by the global information complex. This paper explains the nuances of violence surrounding the exchange of media surrounding war, criticizing both pro-war and anti-war stances, to examine the …

An Ethnic Cultural Landscape: German Breweries And Social Institutions In Covington, Kentucky, 1860-1920, Andrew Jones
An Ethnic Cultural Landscape: German Breweries And Social Institutions In Covington, Kentucky, 1860-1920, Andrew Jones
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
A useful marker for recognizing the impact that ethnic groups make to the social and cultural characteristics of a city are the institutions and material landscapes created by those groups. In northern Kentucky, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, German immigrants and their descendants in the city of Covington established institutions such as breweries, saloons, social associations, and churches that became the heart of ethnic neighborhoods and shaped the form of the landscape. This research examines institutional and cultural landscape markers of German cultural identity in the city of Covington, Kentucky, from 1860 to 1920. Demographic and spatial data …

Hyracoidea From The Middle Miocene Hominoid Locality Of Paşalar (Nw Turkey), Martin Pickford, Serdar Mayda, Berna Alpagut, Fatma Arzu Demi̇rel, Ayşegül Şarbak, Tümel Tanju Kaya
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Previously available samples of Hyracoidea from Paşalar (MN 6, Middle Miocene), Turkey, have indicated the presence of Pliohyracidae at the site, but the material was too scanty for confident identification. The single upper molar, an upper molar ectoloph fragment and an ascending ramal fragment were too uninformative for determining the taxonomic identity of the fossils, although several names have been proposed in the literature. Additional fossils collected from Paşalar include upper and lower premolars, which help to tie down the affinities of this hyracoid. They are attributed to the genus Prohyrax, but were not named specifically, even though they are …
A Great Hunter Needs A Great Spear: Experimental Study Of Technological Considerations That Determine The Efficacy Of A Hunting Spear, Elizabeth M Hagan, Jordan Durham
A Great Hunter Needs A Great Spear: Experimental Study Of Technological Considerations That Determine The Efficacy Of A Hunting Spear, Elizabeth M Hagan, Jordan Durham
Undergraduate Arts and Research Showcase
This research project investigates prehistoric hunting practices, involving a hand-thrown spears, henceforth referred to as “Projectile Technology”. It aims to assess the influence of spear shaft size in the efficacy of spears as a whole during hunting pursuit. Moreover, we will evaluate how the hunter’s distance from the target may affect the efficacy of varying spear-sizes. The broader theoretical question we seek to address is what specific spear-size and throwing-location considerations determined the success of hunting with projectile weaponry. Projectile point technology has marked a major cultural innovation in human history in Africa around 200,000 years ago (Shea 2006; Milks …

Read In Or Check Out: A Four-Year Analysis Of Circulation And In-House Use Of Print Books, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Gerard Shea, Kaitlin Kaitlin Kehnemuyi
Library Publications
As libraries offer more multi-dimensional study areas and online resources, it is important to understand how print books are being used. The reported decline in print book circulation has largely been based on books checked out of the library without recording in-house use (books used in the library but not checked out). Including in-house use gives a more accurate representation of book circulation, helping to demonstrate the value of the physical library and print collections, and informing collection development. To better understand how our print collections are being used, we analyze holdings, checkout data, and in-house use data by subject, …
