Controversies And Consensus In Research On Dialogic Teaching And Learning, Christa S.C. Asterhan, Christine Howe, Adam Lefstein, Eugene Matusov, Alina Reznitskaya

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

Scholarly interest in dialogic pedagogy and classroom dialogue is multi-disciplinary and draws on a variety of theoretical frameworks. On the positive side, this has produced a rich and varied body of research and evidence. However, in spite of a common interest in educational dialogue and learning through dialogue, cross-disciplinary engagement with each other's work is rare. Scholarly discussions and publications tend to be clustered in separate communities, each characterized by a particular type of research questions, aspects of dialogue they focus on, type of evidence they bring to bear, and ways in which standards for rigor are constructed. In the …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Understanding the adaptive capacity of ecosystems to cope with change is crucial to management. However, unclear and often confusing definitions of adaptive capacity make application of this concept difficult. In this paper, we revisit definitions of adaptive capacity and operationalize the concept. We define adaptive capacity as the latent potential of an ecosystem to alter resilience in response to change. We present testable hypotheses to evaluate complementary attributes of adaptive capacity that may help further clarify the components and relevance of the concept. Adaptive sampling, inference and modeling can reduce key uncertainties incrementally over time and increase learning about adaptive …

Mob, Murder, Motivation: The Emergence Of Hate Crime Discourse In India, M. Mohsin Alam Bhat Jan 2020

Mob, Murder, Motivation: The Emergence Of Hate Crime Discourse In India, M. Mohsin Alam Bhat

Socio-Legal Review

Since 2015, various legal and civil society actors started highlighting the visible rise in media-recorded incidents of anti-Dalit and anti-Muslim violence in the country. These conversations were marked by diverse and competing ways of describing and legally addressing such events. One of the categories that the various actors came to deploy was hate crime. The hate crime concept is distinct from other alternatives like lynching, communal riots, and vigilantism due to its simultaneous focus on motivation and social hierarchy. In response to a set of petitions in 2018, the Supreme Court of India through a series of guidelines in Tehseen …

Essential Religious Practices' Doctrine As A Cautionary Tale: Adopting Efficient Modalities Of Socio-Cultural Fact-Finding, Mary Kavita Dominic Jan 2020

Essential Religious Practices' Doctrine As A Cautionary Tale: Adopting Efficient Modalities Of Socio-Cultural Fact-Finding, Mary Kavita Dominic

Socio-Legal Review

In India, interactions between law and religion have often culminated in fractious, long-standing disputes. To reconcile this tension, a diluted form of legal pluralism was embraced in the post-Independence period. A delicate balance was struck between ‘universal’ state laws and ‘localized’ religious norms. In recent times, this balance has been upended by a judicial application of the ‘Essential Religious Practices’ (ERP) doctrine – a doctrine whereby protection is conferred on beliefs or practices judged ‘essential’ to a religion. In carving out the essential core of a religion, courts in India have retained only those religious norms that conform to the …

The Sound Of Bone: The Initial Testing And Analysis Of Sound As A Species Identification Method For Osteological Remains, Emily J. Dunn

Theses and Dissertations

This paper represents a preliminary test to an alternative method of species remains identification, namely bone acoustics. It is hypothesized that human and non-human long bone remains of similar diameter produce different amplitudes of sound from one another, resulting in the ability to distinguish human remains from non-human remains.

The Whelming Sea, Sean Hanley Jan 2020

The Whelming Sea, Sean Hanley

Theses and Dissertations

The Whelming Sea is a thirty-minute experimental documentary that reveals the moments of entanglement between three animals living along the Mid-Atlantic shoreline; curious humans, spawning horseshoe crabs, and migratory shorebirds. Working from the realm of multispecies ethnography, the film shifts the subjective positioning of the viewer between the human and nonhuman to suggest the complexity of our enmeshed experience. In the face of this current era of mass extinction, the film explores the limitations and poetic possibilities of scientific encounters with the lives of others.

The Chôra Of Dionisy’S Wall-Painting (1500-1502) At The Nativity Of The Mother Of God Sobor, Ferapontovo Monastery, Maria M. Shevelkina Jan 2020

The Chôra Of Dionisy’S Wall-Painting (1500-1502) At The Nativity Of The Mother Of God Sobor, Ferapontovo Monastery, Maria M. Shevelkina

Theses and Dissertations

The structure, spatiality, and wall-paintings of the Nativity church together emulated the Platonist Chôra through transparency, fluidity, circular movement, veils, and Marian imagery. Dionisy’s wall-paintings are studied through a phenomenological lens, considering the process as a reflection of hesychast thought in the post-Byzantine Russian north.

The Human Person, Subject Of Religious Freedom: Arguments In Christianity, Arguments In Islam, Felix Körner Jan 2020

The Human Person, Subject Of Religious Freedom: Arguments In Christianity, Arguments In Islam, Felix Körner

Landas

This article examines the theological foundations of religious freedom within Christianity and Islam, contextualized by the Bangsamoro Organic Law. Tracing Roman Catholicism's historical paradigm shift culminating in the Second Vatican Council's Dignitatis Humanae, the author analyzes how the concepts of "faith"—defined as a free, relational response of love—and the "human person"—characterized by dignity, relation, conscience, and history—theologically justify religious liberty. The study explores parallel justifications within Islam, examining Qur'anic perspectives on natural law, diversity, and human dignity. Finally, it addresses practical contemporary challenges in Christian-Muslim relations, emphasizing education and soft power over coercion.

Pneumatology Of Sacred Sustainability: Foundation Of Cosmicism And Enspirited Leadership, Jojo M. Fung Jan 2020

Pneumatology Of Sacred Sustainability: Foundation Of Cosmicism And Enspirited Leadership, Jojo M. Fung

Loyola Papers

This paper presents a pneumatological framework for sustainability grounded in Rûah Elohim, the primordial Spirit active in creation. It explains how this Spirit enables the “triunological othering” of God, such that creation becomes the sacred abode of the Triune God who sustains all life. Creation is thus understood as sacralized and interconnected. The author proposes an emerging ecomysticism called Cosmicism, inviting all to experience the divine presence within the ongoing recreation of the world. This vision redefines human identity as “cosmic-spirits” called to participate in caring for creation. Consequently, the paper advocates for Enspirited Leadership that embodies the ethics of …

Coexistence And Violence: The Case For Equality Of Opportunity In Sri Lanka, Gehan Gunatilleke Jan 2020

Coexistence And Violence: The Case For Equality Of Opportunity In Sri Lanka, Gehan Gunatilleke

Socio-Legal Review

Equality of opportunity reflects the availability of opportunities to all individuals in a society to enable them to advance their interests on an equal footing. This article discusses the concept of equality of opportunity in the Sri Lankan context. It explores Sri Lanka’s post-Independence socio-political and constitutional history and examines the nexus between the denial of formal and substantive equality of opportunity and the emergence of violent conflict. This article presents a case for making formal and substantive equality of opportunity integral to advancing sustainable coexistence and ensuring the non-recurrence of violent conflict in Sri Lanka. It analyses Sri Lanka’s …

Keep Your Kodak Busy: Monuments Of The Great War, L Nicol, J Hutchinson

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper draws together two elements of the Photography strand in an extensive interdisciplinary research project looking at memorialisation: (i) a literature review (Hutchinson) that explored the significance of photography and photographs to processes of loss and mourning, remembrance, commemoration and memorialisation during the Great War and throughout the years of pilgrimage and battlefield tourism that follow, and (ii) a sequence of photographs, ‘Keep Your Kodak Busy’ (Nicol). The article integrates discussion from the literature with presentation of a selection of the photographs to show how photography as creative practice contributes to an understanding of the economic, social and cultural …

The Adaptive Functions Of Morality, Michael R. Apostol Jan 2020

The Adaptive Functions Of Morality, Michael R. Apostol

Copley Library Undergraduate Research Awards

Morality is the principles that distinguish right from wrong. Humans maintain a moral self-image: the views, judgements, and actions that reflect a sense of right or wrong (Jordan, Leliveld, & Tenbrunsel, 2015). In order to study the impact of moral attitudes on behavior we must understand why certain moral beliefs persist, the function of morality, and why errors in moral judgement occur. With an evolutionary framework, studying the adaptive significance of morality may provide answers to these questions. Researchers have studied morality in nonhuman animals, the development of moral principles, cultural factors that influence ethical frameworks, how morality functions, and …

Investigating The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ-A New Transdisciplinary Approach, Andrew Loke Jan 2020

Investigating The Resurrection Of Jesus Christ-A New Transdisciplinary Approach, Andrew Loke

Ebooks

This book offers a new contribution by addressing issues using a transdisciplinary approach, that is, one which integrates different disciplines—in this case, historical-critical studies of the Bible, psychology, comparative religion, analytic philosophy, and theology—to create a new methodology that moves beyond discipline-specific approaches to address a problem. Utilizing an original analytical framework, I shall demonstrate that a logically exhaustive list of categories of hypotheses in relation to the claims of Jesus’ post-mortem appearances and the outcome of Jesus’ body can be formulated—indeed, this would be the first monograph on Jesus’ resurrection to demonstrate a comprehensive coverage of all the categories …

The Sparrow Hawk Castle - A Mostly Ignored Literary Motif Across The Cultures And The Centuries, Albrecht Classen Jan 2020

The Sparrow Hawk Castle - A Mostly Ignored Literary Motif Across The Cultures And The Centuries, Albrecht Classen

Quidditas

Johann Schiltberger included a curious episode about the ‘Sparrow Hawk Mountain’ in his famous travelogue Reisebericht from 1427. This episode can be traced back to John Mandeville’s Travels in the German translation by Michel Velser. This study examines the similarities between Mandeville’s text and Schiltberger’s account, but then also the use of this motif in the tradition of the Melusine novel (Jean d’Arras and Thüring von Ringoltingen). Further attempts are made to identify sources for this episode Mandeville might have drawn from, including an Armenian chronicle and even the love treatise De amore by Andreas Capellanus.

Facebook, Una Extensión De Marketing Y No Un Espacio Deliberativo: Caso De Andrés Manuel López Obrador En Elecciones Presidenciales De México En 2018, Alejandra Toxtle Tlachino, Rubén Arnoldo González Macías
