Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo Jan 2022

Lehi, Joseph, And The Kingdom Of Israel, Richley Crapo

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

I present evidence of two priesthoods in the Jewish Bible: an Aaronite priesthood, held by Aaron and passed down through his descendants; and a higher Mushite priesthood, held not only by Moses and his descendants but also by other worthy individuals, such as Joshua, an Ephraimite. The Mushite priests were centered in Shiloh, where Joshua settled the Ark of the Covenant, while the Aaronites became dominant in the Jerusalem temple. Like Joshua, the prophet Lehi, a descendant of the northern tribe of Manasseh, held the higher priesthood. His ministry, as recounted in the Book of Mormon, demonstrates four characteristics that …

Translanguaging, Multilingualism, And Multimodality In Children's Mathematics Learning, Cristina Valencia Mazzanti Jan 2022

Translanguaging, Multilingualism, And Multimodality In Children's Mathematics Learning, Cristina Valencia Mazzanti

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to portray the complex language practices of multilingual children when learning mathematics. To do so, I draw on data collected as part of a three-year research study that was designed to understand the relationship between young children’s language use and mathematics learning, focusing on students’ work as well as interactions collected through research journal entries and audio recordings. I center the practice of thick description as a path to advance disruptive understanding of multimodal representations of children’s language use while learning mathematics. I then consider the necessary movement from a preconceived understanding …

Covid-19 And The Carceral System: An Examination Of The Increasing Structural Inequities In Access To Healthcare In Sarasota And Manatee County Jails, Danielle Robbins Jan 2022

Covid-19 And The Carceral System: An Examination Of The Increasing Structural Inequities In Access To Healthcare In Sarasota And Manatee County Jails, Danielle Robbins

Theses & ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on access to healthcare in Southwest Florida jails. The ongoing public health crisis has underscored the importance of examining these constructions in a cautious yet expeditious manner. While a considerable amount of research seeks to understand COVID-19 within prisons, there is limited information that contextualizes the novel virus within jails. This thesis aims to augment existing literature by taking a closer look at public health and disease prevention in jails. This project draws on data accumulated from nine ethnographic interviews dated from December of 2021 through …

“The Hand That Rocks The Cradle:” Exploring Contemporary Depictions Of Motherhood In Literature, Thalia Sanchez Jan 2022

“The Hand That Rocks The Cradle:” Exploring Contemporary Depictions Of Motherhood In Literature, Thalia Sanchez

Theses & ETDs

This thesis focuses on exploring depictions of motherhood in popular twentieth and twenty-first century literature. I use shifting trends in maternal literature as a means of identifying women’s shifting anxieties and frustrations around motherhood, specifically through the lens of the traditional nuclear family structure. In Chapter 1, I analyze the cultural mythology of the Virgin Mary, in conjunction with Shin Kyung-sook’s novel Please Look After Mom. The aim of this chapter is to create an understanding of what it takes to be considered a “good mother,” and the limitations of the sociocultural vision of the perfect mother. In Chapter 2, …

Indigenous Aesthetics And Post-Revolutionary Nationalism: Defining Mexicanidad Through The Popular Arts And The Best-Maugard Method, Katie Margerison Jan 2022

Indigenous Aesthetics And Post-Revolutionary Nationalism: Defining Mexicanidad Through The Popular Arts And The Best-Maugard Method, Katie Margerison

Theses & ETDs

After the Mexican Revolution ended in 1920, President Álvaro Obregón (1920-1924) enacted a national reconstruction plan that aimed to establish a unified national identity through visual culture. The plan foregrounded efforts toward the cultural inclusion and integration of Mexico’s substantial yet marginalized indigenous population. Through a variety of government-sponsored events, initiatives, and educational programs related to the visual arts, Obregón sought to unify the nation by promoting indigenous culture as integral to Mexican identity. In this thesis, I examine the key ways in which Obregón’s administration was involved in popularizing indigenous aesthetics and integrating them into modern Mexican culture, while …

In The Misery Business: Female Serial Killers As Seen In U.S Popular Media, Natalie Roldan Jan 2022

In The Misery Business: Female Serial Killers As Seen In U.S Popular Media, Natalie Roldan

Theses & ETDs

This thesis identifies stereotypes and gender issues that are all-encompassing in serial killers, more specifically female serial killers in the United States. The subsequent representation in the media through connections between psychology, criminology, and popular culture show how many female criminals and serial killers have been changed to fit the narrative of the professionals in said fields. Using the theories of Cesare Lombroso and Sigmund Freud as time markers for the period that they were written in. Using articles from feminist journals, psychological journals, and historical journals based around criminology, along with film reviews and basic background information, this thesis …

Comeback Stage: Trends Of Indianness In K-Pop | Performance Theory Feat. Video Essays, Kanti Gudur

Theses & ETDs

This interdisciplinary thesis examines trends of Indianness in the context of K-pop and is accompanied by a performance component in the form of a video essay. Through analysis of multi-media sources, I establish and explore the relationship between performances of racial and ethnic identity and K-pop. This is accomplished by analyzing trends of Indianness from the last decade through the lenses of Performance Studies and Psychology. The video essay and thesis are complements to each other, as they both examine the same sites of analysis, but are directed toward different audiences. The thesis prioritizes thoroughness and interaction with theory, while …

To Boldly Go From Zine To Ao3: A Study Of Fanfiction Culture In The Star Trek Fandom, Victoria Reep Jan 2022

To Boldly Go From Zine To Ao3: A Study Of Fanfiction Culture In The Star Trek Fandom, Victoria Reep

Theses & ETDs

Fanfiction, or the practice of writing fiction about characters from a specific movie, TV show, or book is a practice that has existed for decades. Commonly attributed to the fanzines created by Star Trek fans in the 1960s, fanfiction has become an international phenomenon. Fanfiction is largely shared online and as a result, my research was conducted in an online setting. After speaking to eleven Star Trek fans who read or write fanfiction and reading the stories they selected for me to illustrate their interests, I have concluded that fanfiction is larger than its written works. Fanfiction is a community …

Conceptual Metaphor Games An Embodied Approach To Mathematics Pedagogy, Laura Perkins Jan 2022

Conceptual Metaphor Games An Embodied Approach To Mathematics Pedagogy, Laura Perkins

Theses & ETDs

In the theory of embodied cognition, mathematical activity is thought to be facili- tated in large part by epistemic “mappings” that translate bodily intuitions about the world into abstract conceptual domains. Since their popularization, these ideas have influenced discourse in mathematics education. Another currently popular topic in mathematics education is the growing evidence that learning games can enhance learning outcomes. Combining these facts, this work proposes to construct real- world or virtual games which directly map onto mathematical concepts via concep- tual metaphors. Games of this kind, which I dub conceptual metaphor games, intend to encourage learning as exploration, making …

The Tampa Bay Puerto Rican Community: Expanding Contemporary Research On Puerto Rican Migrant Communities In Florida, Yamir Crespo Babilonia Jan 2022

The Tampa Bay Puerto Rican Community: Expanding Contemporary Research On Puerto Rican Migrant Communities In Florida, Yamir Crespo Babilonia

Theses & ETDs

This research covers the migratory history and characteristics of Puerto Ricans in Tampa and their relations with other Latines. I seek to expand the study of contemporary Puerto Rican communities in Florida that has been concentrated in Orlando and understand the effect of the histories and communities of the cities Puerto Rican migrants settle in on their sense of self and relations with other Latines. Following methods of previous studies, I conducted surveys and interviews with active community members. I found that Tampa Puerto Ricans are very similar to Orlando’s community in motives for migration but vary in racial self-identification …

“Exploring The Status Of Working Women In Honduran Maquiladoras: The Intersection Of Labor Rights, Reproductive Rights, And Human Rights”, Elizabeth Mena Jan 2022

“Exploring The Status Of Working Women In Honduran Maquiladoras: The Intersection Of Labor Rights, Reproductive Rights, And Human Rights”, Elizabeth Mena

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the relationship between women’s labor and reproductive rights and how it is experienced in the Honduran maquiladora industry. I explore this relationship through three main lenses: capitalism, patriarchy, and the lack of regulation of rights. This approach aims to describe the structures and ideologies that negatively impact working women’s labor and reproductive rights in maquiladoras. While I explain the repercussions of these structures and ideologies in the context of Honduras, I also emphasize the role of external forces and actors – foreign corporations and the United States – in perpetuating structural and systemic issues. Namely, an understanding …

Invented Tanzania: The Cold War Influences On Nyerere’S Ujamaa Policies, Adrienne Hill Jan 2022

Invented Tanzania: The Cold War Influences On Nyerere’S Ujamaa Policies, Adrienne Hill

Theses & ETDs

This thesis argues that Tanzania’s socialist policies in the 1960s were heavily influenced by foreign sources, in contrast to what President Nyerere tried to brand as a homegrown form of socialism that harkened back to a pre-colonial era before the nation-state of Tanzania ever existed. It examines how foreign aid affected the villagization scheme and the cultural programs President Nyerere enacted to turn Tanzania into a developed state. It also analyzes how the creation of a cultural identity for the new state of Tanzania also affected Nyerere’s choices of foreign aid. This paper also argues that by admiring the Chinese …

Seeking Transcendence: An Argument For The Ritual Use Of Psychedelics Among The Spiritual But Not Religious, Jackson Bove Jan 2022

Seeking Transcendence: An Argument For The Ritual Use Of Psychedelics Among The Spiritual But Not Religious, Jackson Bove

Theses & ETDs

Currently, the movement of “spiritual but not religious” people represents a growing population in the United States. This spiritual but not religious category, primarily characterized by the rejection of institutional religion and desire for firsthand spiritual experiences, overlaps with the concurrent resurgence of psychedelic research and culture. Psychedelics indeed may elicit those spiritually meaningful experiences without the need for hierarchies and churches to mediate them. However, there is a critical need to structure the use of psychedelics. This thesis thus argues to retain the ritual and ceremonial contexts which hallucinogenic drugs have traditionally been used in as we integrate psychedelics …

Empirical And Epistemic Justifications:A Comparative Assessment Of Mapping Validation Techniques For Evaluating Seagrass Abundance, Maria Guardado Jan 2022

Empirical And Epistemic Justifications:A Comparative Assessment Of Mapping Validation Techniques For Evaluating Seagrass Abundance, Maria Guardado

Theses & ETDs

Empirically, I perform three different mapping validation procedures (by eye, photo-quadrat, and point count) in order to compare their functionality as ground truth data. I calculate the benthic substrate coverage in a subset of the Sarasota Bay in Florida by using high resolution aerial images and perform accuracy assessments using the three validation procedures. Philosophically, I assess how the methodology of mapping validation procedures assumes a framework of scientific realism for practicing scientists, implying an absolutism about the truth in scientific claims. I then assess the procedures I used in the comparative study of mapping validation procedures through the epistemic …

Complications With Historical Production: American History, Bias, And Latine Representation, Gabriela Ott Jan 2022

Complications With Historical Production: American History, Bias, And Latine Representation, Gabriela Ott

Theses & ETDs

This thesis aims to investigate how American history professors’ attitudes relate to the texts assigned to their students and how these readings portray Latines. Past research indicates that historical production of history narratives have been impacted by national identity, linguistic choices, instructors’ perspectives, and prejudice. These key ideas in historical narrative creation can have psychological ramifications for Latine students, such as stereotype threat or transmission, self-esteem alteration, personal disengagement, and lowered sense of belonging. The study examined six American history professors’ syllabi and survey results to see how Latines were represented in assigned readings and if there was a connection …

Lilith: Mother Of Demons Or Feminist Ideal?, Sarah Cooper Jan 2022

Lilith: Mother Of Demons Or Feminist Ideal?, Sarah Cooper

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the relationship Jewish women have had with the Lilith figure over the past millennium to better understand the social and cultural priorities of Jewish women in different historical contexts. By approaching pre-modern conceptions of Lilith through an analysis of childbirth amulets that were used explicitly to protect against her, this thesis establishes an early understanding of Lilith as a harmful entity with the specific aim of bringing physical harm to infants. A more contemporary focus on Lilith literature from mostly Jewish women scholars brings to light a Lilith with very different priorities, much more focused on themes …

An Alternative To Stebi‑A: Validation Of The T‑Stem Science Scale, Alana Unfried, Arif Rachmatullah, Alonzo Alexander, Eric Wiebe

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: The Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument A (STEBI-A; Riggs & Enochs, 1990 in Science Education, 74(6), 625-637) has been the dominant measurement tool of in-service science teacher self-efficacy and outcome expectancy for nearly 30 years. However, concerns about certain aspects of the STEBI-A have arisen, including the wording, validity, reliability, and dimensionality. In the present study, we revised the STEBI-A by addressing many concerns research has identified, and developed a new instrument called the T-STEM Science Scale. The T-STEM Science Scale was reviewed by expert panels and piloted first before it was administered to 727 elementary and secondary science …

Augmented Reality: The Challenges And Opportunities Of This New Medium, Zijun Liang Jan 2022

Augmented Reality: The Challenges And Opportunities Of This New Medium, Zijun Liang

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Augmented reality is a technology that pushes the boundaries of media art and cyber security, expanding the potential and challenges of each. By combining computer graphics and realistic visuals, a new medium category was created that increased the classic realistic experiences. Traditional realistic sensations are the ordinary senses humans use to respond to incoming information, such as seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling—this viewpoint is based on a combination of visual anthropology and media theory.

It is vital for a media artist and software developer to understand how immersive technologies can improve the production and presentation of relevant content in interactive …

Plural Belonging: The Samaritans' Negotiation Of Space In The Occupied Palestinian Territory, Zeina Jallad Jan 2022

Plural Belonging: The Samaritans' Negotiation Of Space In The Occupied Palestinian Territory, Zeina Jallad

American University International Law Review

Created in 1993 in accordance with the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Accords, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has grappled with the administration and maintenance of a vortex of highly fragmented legal and judicial systems. These fractured frameworks are the result of centuries-old colonial and military administrations that have exercised jurisdiction over the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt). A self-governing entity whose sovereignty has been undermined since its inception, the PA idealizes a democratic modus-operandi for the nation’s future, while actively participating in and benefiting from an overarching network of laws, court systems, and regulatory frameworks designed to discriminate against and abuse their subjects. Palestinian …
