Models For Living: Critiques Of Midcentury Suburban Design, With A View From Lower Bucks County, Pa, Christopher J. Palladino

Theses and Dissertations

After World War II, millions of American servicemen returned home, anxious to put the war behind them, settle down, and begin a family. This resulted in an unprecedented spike in demand for housing, intensified by the low-interest loans granted by the G.I. Bill. Combined with an aggressive advertising campaign, longer term mortgages and an attractive and novel building plan made Levittown, PA an immediate success. Concurrently, geographical sectors of the United States witnessed an historical change in the manner in which homes were designed and constructed. Innovations such as mass production, the efficiency system, and the assembly line were expansively …

The Efficacy Of Us-Mexico Border Enforcement In Relation To Crime Prevention, Samuel Klopstock Jan 2022

The Efficacy Of Us-Mexico Border Enforcement In Relation To Crime Prevention, Samuel Klopstock

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The Trump Administration brought substantive changes to United States immigration policies, and labeled undocumented immigrants as predisposed towards criminal behavior. This paper presents a brief historical perspective of three major waves of Mexican immigration to the United States: The Early 1900s – Before World War I, Post-World War I – World War II, End of Bracero Accord – Present, and considers the relationship between immigrants and crime. The author explores contemporary immigration enforcement, both conservative and liberal attitudes towards immigrants, and their effects on policy. Consequences of border enforcement policies and the efficacy of border enforcement in preventing crime are …

No. 85: Pandemic Food Precarity, Crisis-Living And Translocality: Zimbabwean Migrant Households In South Africa During Covid-19, Sujata Ramachandran, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Elizabeth Opiyo Onyango

Southern African Migration Programme

COVID-19 has been a great disrupter of international migration and a social and economic disaster for migrants. The findings in this report come from a household survey conducted by SAMP in mid-2021 in the South African cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg. The report argues that years of crisis-living in a hyperinflationary environment in Zimbabwe left many households in a pre-pandemic state of food insecurity and vulnerable to the pandemic shock. At the same time, the COVID-19 crisis reduced the ability of Zimbabwean migrant households in South Africa to assist family back in Zimbabwe. As well as contributing to greater …

Techné Logos And The (Neg) Anthropocene: The First Annual Conference Of The European Culture And Technology Laboratory, Noel Fitzpatrick (Ed), Conor Mcgarrigle (Ed)

Books

The European Culture and Technology Lab (ECT Lab+) is part of the European University of Technology (EUt+) which commenced in 2020 and is funded by the European Universities Initiative. The ECT Lab+ poses questions about the relation between culture and technology, the emerging environments (or milieux) of technology which are cultural, cosmological, technical, social, economic, and political. The emerging environment could be considered as a study of evolution, a history of technical organs, this we can term a general organology. The ECT Lab+ brings together researchers who are interested in the impacts of technology on society, these impacts can be …

Evolving Evolutionary Psychology, Darcia Narvaez, David S. Moore, David C. Witherington, Timothy I. Vandiver, Robert Lickliter Jan 2022

Evolving Evolutionary Psychology, Darcia Narvaez, David S. Moore, David C. Witherington, Timothy I. Vandiver, Robert Lickliter

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Which evolutionary theory can best benefit psychological theory, research, and application? The most well-known school of evolutionary psychology has a narrow conceptual perspective (a.k.a., “Narrow Evolutionary Psychology” or NEP). Proponents of NEP have long argued that their brand of evolutionary psychology represents a full-fledged scientific revolution, with Buss (2020) recently likening NEP’s scientific impact to that of a Copernican or Darwinian paradigm shift. However, NEP stands on two traditions that are now the subjects of serious debate and revision: the neo-Darwinian adaptationist framework within evolutionary biology, and the computationalist “mind-as-computer” framework within cognitive science. Although NEP calls itself revolutionary, the …

"Only To Have A Say In The Way He Dies": Bodily Autonomy And Methods Of Execution, Alexandra L. Klein Jan 2022

"Only To Have A Say In The Way He Dies": Bodily Autonomy And Methods Of Execution, Alexandra L. Klein

Scholarly Articles

Capital punishment is one of the most significant intrusions into a person's bodily autonomy; the state takes a person's life. Even though the state has stripped a person on death row of much of their autonomy and intends to kill them, removing all autonomy, a person sentenced to death may, in some circumstances, choose how they will die. While most states rely on a single method of execution, some states permit a condemned person to choose among two or more methods of execution. Constitutional challenges to methods of execution requires the challenger to demonstrate a substantial risk of severe pain …

Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey Jan 2022

Mormon-Ish: Negotiating Religious Ambivalence Online, Kristen Tobey

2022 Faculty Bibliography

Reporting on responses from a survey of disaffected Mormons who utilize internet resources to manage feelings of distance from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this article explores the production of religious ambivalence online, arguing that ambivalence is not a default position for those too passive or afraid to leave, nor is it a failure of decisiveness or commitment. Rather, it is a produced religious mode that depends on robust socialization mechanisms to result in a strong sense of personal and collective identity. The online context enables, and indeed requires, an operationalization of religious ambivalence as both a …

Striving Towards Authenticity In The Self Through Dress And Appearance: Stories Of Latina Adolescent Immigrants, Mary Alice Casto, Jennifer Paff Ogle, Maricela Demirjyn, Amanda Morales, Sarah Silvas-Bernstein

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

We sought to explore how Latina adolescent immigrants experience immigration across adolescence as they seek to know and express their authentic selves through dress and appearance. Our work was informed by theories of acculturation, identity, and authenticity. Participants included 12 immigrant women who identified as Latina and who immigrated before age 16. Open-ended interviews focused on participants’ memories of their immigration experiences during adolescence. Data were analyzed using constant comparison processes. Findings revealed that, for participants, the typical challenges of adolescence were complicated by immigration that included constructing an authentic identity at the intersection of two cultures. Immigration produced a …

How Implicit Bias Contributes To Racial Disparities In Maternal Health, Michaella Saintil Jan 2022

How Implicit Bias Contributes To Racial Disparities In Maternal Health, Michaella Saintil

Honors Undergraduate Theses

A rise in racial disparities in maternal health has become an ongoing issue in the United States. This study uses a scoping literature review method to examine the effect of implicit bias on racial disparities in maternal healthcare. Multiple articles in this study provide sufficient evidence to prove that implicit bias is a contributing factor to the alarming rise of racial disparities in maternal health outcomes. The study revealed two distinct categories that elaborate on the health crisis that has been a continuation of practices traced backed to slavery. The analysis for this research is grounded in lack of quality …

Genetic Diversity And Population Structure Of Local Sudanese Sheep Populations Revealed By Whole-Genome Sequencing, A Amane, G Belay, Abdulfatai Tijjani, T Dessie, H H. Musa, O Hanotte

Faculty Research 2022

Local Sudanese sheep populations inhabiting diverse environmental conditions and holding opposing morphologies provide opportunities for molecular-genetic research. Characterizing their genome is crucial for sustainable breeding improvement and targeting favorable genes in breeding programs. However, the genome of these sheep populations, which comprises several subtypes, remains uncharacterized using whole-genome sequence data. This study aimed to elucidate genome-wide genetic diversity and population structure of 11 local Sudanese sheep populations, namely, Hammari, Kabbashi, Meidobe, Ashgar, Dubasi, Watish, Bega, Naili, Fulani, Zagawi, and Garag. Ninety whole blood samples were collected, and we extracted DNA using a Qiagen DNeasy® extraction kit. We used the Illumina …

The Social Philosophy Of Gerald Gaus: Moral Relations Amid Control, Contestation, And Complexity, Kevin Vallier Jan 2022

The Social Philosophy Of Gerald Gaus: Moral Relations Amid Control, Contestation, And Complexity, Kevin Vallier

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Gerald Gaus was one of the leading liberal theorists of the early twenty-first century. He defended liberal order based on its unique capacity to handle deep disagreement and pressed liberals toward a principled openness to pluralism and diversity. Yet, almost everything written about Gaus's work is evaluative: determining whether his arguments succeed or fail. This essay breaks from the pack by outlining underlying themes in his work. I argue that Gaus explored how to sustain moral relations between persons in light of the institutional threats of social control, evaluative pluralism, and institutional complexity, and the psychological threat of acting solely …

On The Margins Of The Usis Archive In South Asia: Histories Of Media And Politics, Layli Uddin, Lotte Hoek Jan 2022

On The Margins Of The Usis Archive In South Asia: Histories Of Media And Politics, Layli Uddin, Lotte Hoek

The Journal of e-Media Studies

To explore the archive of the USIS in South Asia frequently means stumbling across a USIS officer, film screening, or library book on the margins of an archive dedicated to other institutions, histories, or principles. The USIS rarely appears in South Asian professional repositories or personal collections as a primary focus. Instead, when we, a political historian (Uddin) and a media anthropologist (Hoek), encounter the USIS in archives in South Asia, it appears to us in a different guise than in the archives created by and for the USIS in North America, and mostly part of explorations not centrally focused …

The Imaginal Lexicon Of Aging Studies, William Ebenstein Jan 2022

The Imaginal Lexicon Of Aging Studies, William Ebenstein

Publications and Research

Aging Studies focuses on the cultural, humanistic and experiential aspects of aging insofar as these are already embedded in literature, art, language and everyday life. The lexicon of this multi-disciplinary field has evolved in response to shifts in cultural attitudes, social roles, and conceptual frameworks. At the same time, many age-related words have links to poetic imagery and ancient myths, and to evocative etymologies that conjure an historical context. The article looks at the ongoing and surprisingly difficult effort to find the right word to call an older person. It reviews the language and literary genres associated with longevity. And, …

Social Connectedness For Women’S Empowerment: Development Program Proposal To Support Asian America Pacific Islanders (Aapi) Refugee And Immigrant Women In Denver/Aurora, Colorado., Rattana Rode

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper studies and proposes methods of empowering newly-arrived Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) refugee and immigrant women throughout the integration process by increasing social connectedness. I propose a combination of mentorship model with social activities and mini educational workshops to provide necessary support service for these marginalized groups. The program I developed will focus mainly on newly-arrived female refugees and immigrants and those who are identified as homebound. The mentorship model focuses on matching a small group of mentees to mentors who are long-termed residents in the local community. The mentorship model can assist with attaining knowledge of …

The Visualities And Aesthetics Of Prosecuting Aged Defendants, Mark Drumbl, Caroline Fournet Jan 2022

The Visualities And Aesthetics Of Prosecuting Aged Defendants, Mark Drumbl, Caroline Fournet

Scholarly Articles

The prosecution—whether domestic or international—of international crimes and atrocities may implicate extremely aged defendants. Much has been written about the legalisms that inhere (or not) in trying these barely alive individuals. Very little however has been written about the aesthetics the barely alive encrust into the architecture of courtrooms, the optics these defendants suffuse into the trial process, and the expressive value of punishing them. This is what we seek to do in this project.

Ekpen-N'Owa: Conceptualizing The Human-Animal Relationship In The Benin Peoples' Worldview, Itohan Idumwonyi Jan 2022

Ekpen-N'Owa: Conceptualizing The Human-Animal Relationship In The Benin Peoples' Worldview, Itohan Idumwonyi

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

Animals are prominently ubiquitous in the Benin peoples' cosmologies. These philosophies associate animals with the transformation of the primordial chaos into a livable world, human beings, and the supernatural. In this context, specific animals are used in religious rituals to express the concepts of authority, supremacy, and nobility. Metaphorically speaking, the Oba (monarch) who rules over other monarchs is an Ekpen (leopard). Ekpen is an integral part of Benin's worldview and recurrently compares the Oba (ekpen-n'owa, the house-leopard personified) with the ekpenn'oha (wild leopard). Yet, studies in African Religion undermine the symbolic representation of the Oba as ekpen-n'owa. This article …
