Basque Studies At Boise State University, Ziortza Gandarias Beldarrain, Nere Lete Jan 2022

Basque Studies At Boise State University, Ziortza Gandarias Beldarrain, Nere Lete

World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations

Boise, the capital of Idaho that we Basques feel so close to and our own despite being far from the Basque Country, is a twinned city with Gernika-Lumo, known to us as the "eighth Basque province". Today, 12-15,000 people of Basque origin live in the state of Idaho. It can be unanimously said that the history of Boise and the history of the Basque diaspora have gone hand in hand since the discovery of gold in the American River in California in 1849. The first Basques arrived in Idaho in 1890, when silver was discovered in De Lamar and Silver …

Niche Diversity Predicts Personality Structure Across 115 Nations, Patrick K. Durkee, Aaron W. Lukaszewski, Christopher Von Rueden, Michael D. Gurven, David M. Buss, Elliot M. Tucker-Drob

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The niche-diversity hypothesis proposes that personality structure arises from the affordances of unique trait combinations within a society. It predicts that personality traits will be both more variable and differentiated in populations with more distinct social and ecological niches. Prior tests of this hypothesis in 55 nations suffered from potential confounds associated with differences in the measurement properties of personality scales across groups. Using psychometric methods for the approximation of cross-national measurement invariance, we tested the niche-diversity hypothesis in a sample of 115 nations (N = 685,089). We found that an index of niche diversity was robustly associated with …

A Principal's Story Of Leadership: The Evolution Of School Culture In A School For Gifted Education, Lori Wiley Jan 2022

A Principal's Story Of Leadership: The Evolution Of School Culture In A School For Gifted Education, Lori Wiley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A school’s culture evolves over time and guides the ways in which those who interact within the school think, feel, and act. It is grounded in shared meanings, foundational beliefs, and value systems created by a school (Deal & Peterson, 2009). The principal plays a key and critical role in influencing and shaping school culture. The literature representing gifted education, school culture, and the role of the principal in shaping school culture is substantial; however, there is a gap in the literature that explores the role of the principal in gifted education and how the principal might shape the culture …

American Apartheid In The Walamt Valley: The Creation Of Grand Ronde And The Struggle To Assimilate To A Segregated Society, Bruce Jenks Jan 2022

American Apartheid In The Walamt Valley: The Creation Of Grand Ronde And The Struggle To Assimilate To A Segregated Society, Bruce Jenks

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

Throughout its history the United States government professed the goal of assimilation of North America’s indigenous peoples. Whatever words Americans used to frame this social project, it was clearly the result of a view of Native societies as inferior to their own. In investigating the events surrounding the colonization of the Willamette Valley in the 1850s it becomes clear that apartheid, rather than assimilation, was the goal and the result of American colonization in Oregon. Working back from the text “My Life: The Autobiography of Louis Kenoyer,” dictated to anthropologist Melville Jacobs in the 1920s by a Tualatin man about …

Racial Discrimination In Life Insurance, William G. Gale, Kyle D. Logue, Nora Cahill, Rachel Gu, Swati Joshi Jan 2022

Racial Discrimination In Life Insurance, William G. Gale, Kyle D. Logue, Nora Cahill, Rachel Gu, Swati Joshi

Law & Economics Working Papers

We examine the historical and statistical relationship between race and life insurance. Life insurance can play a central role in households’ financial security. Race has played an important and changing role in the provision of life insurance in the U.S. from slave insurance before the Civil War, to “Scientific Racism” continuing into the 20th century, to policies that do not explicitly mention race in recent decades. In empirical work using new data, we confirm earlier work showing that Black individuals have higher life insurance coverage rates than white individuals, controlling for observable characteristics. We find no difference in the likelihood …

The Earth BioGenome Project (EBP) is an audacious endeavor to obtain whole-genome sequences of representatives from all eukaryotic species on Earth. In addition to the project’s technical and organizational challenges, it also faces complicated ethical, legal, and social issues. This paper, from members of the EBP’s Ethical, Legal, and Social Issues (ELSI) Committee, catalogs these ELSI concerns arising from EBP. These include legal issues, such as sample collection and permitting; the applicability of international treaties, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol; intellectual property; sample accessioning; and biosecurity and ethical issues, such as sampling from the …

Becoming With Pigs, Plants, And People: Examining The Formation Of Human-Animal Mutualisms In Neolithic Northeastern China, Ximena Lemoine Jan 2022

Becoming With Pigs, Plants, And People: Examining The Formation Of Human-Animal Mutualisms In Neolithic Northeastern China, Ximena Lemoine

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

More than 10,000 years ago humans in multiple parts of Eurasia began to form increasingly more entangled and mutually dependent relationships with non-human animals. In some cases, the elaboration of these relationships would result in evolutionary change, resulting in biologically distinct or domesticated populations. The last several decades of research show that this process is ongoing and polymorphous, emerging out of sustained human-animal interactions that develop along historically contingent trajectories shaped by particular biological, environmental, and cultural contexts. Thus, understanding domestication as an evolutionary process necessitates investigation into species- and context-specific developmental trajectories of human-animal interaction. The pig (Sus scrofa) …

English Courts And Transnational Islamic Divorces: What Role For Personal Liberty Of Muslim Women?, Ilias Bantekas Jan 2022

English Courts And Transnational Islamic Divorces: What Role For Personal Liberty Of Muslim Women?, Ilias Bantekas

University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review

English courts consider the validity of a talaq obtained abroad on the basis of the lex matrimonii, without examining whether the circumstance of the divorce, both factual and legal, offend English public policy. An anthropological inquiry into talaq obtained in most Muslim nations reveals that androcentric culture – as opposed to religious prescription as such – largely distorts the Quranic vision of this institution. This author suggests that English courts and the scholarly/religious community should entertain the notion of the contractual nature of nikah (marriage) in order to assess the consequences of the talaq. If a nikah is entered into …

Tibetan Dust Accumulation Linked To Ecological And Landscape Response To Global Climate Change, Xianmei Huang, Xiaodong Miao, Qiufang Chang, Jiemei Zhong, Joseph A. Mason, Paul R. Hanson, Xianjiao Ou, Liubing Xu, Zhongping Lai Jan 2022

Tibetan Dust Accumulation Linked To Ecological And Landscape Response To Global Climate Change, Xianmei Huang, Xiaodong Miao, Qiufang Chang, Jiemei Zhong, Joseph A. Mason, Paul R. Hanson, Xianjiao Ou, Liubing Xu, Zhongping Lai

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is a hotspot of earth system research, and understanding its landscape and ecosystem evolution has been hampered by the lack of time-constrained geological records. Geochronological data from 14 loess sites covering a large region in the Tibetan interior show that the TP loess, rather than accumulating during glacial periods, began aggrading at either 13.4 ± 0.4 or 9.9 ± 0.2 ka. An ecological threshold was crossed, when warmer and wetter conditions resulted in increased vegetation cover enabling dust trapping. This dust accumulation model is out of phase with that of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) where …

Mindfully White: An Anti-Racist Affinity Podcast Inspired By The Buddha’S Teaching Of The Four Noble Truths, Christine Eaton

Mindfulness Studies Theses

The Buddha’s foundational teaching of the Four Noble Truths offers a direct seeing into how suffering arises, its causes, and a pathway to liberation. This thesis focuses on racism as a specific form of suffering for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and offers a way for White people to consider how they contribute to its manifestation and what they can do to help end it. This re-formulation of the Four Noble Truths is; First, the truth of racism; Second, the truth of the cause of racism; Third, the truth of the end of racism; and Fourth, the truth of …

The Conceptual Problems Arising From Legal Pluralism, Jorge Luis Fabra-Zamora Jan 2022

The Conceptual Problems Arising From Legal Pluralism, Jorge Luis Fabra-Zamora

Journal Articles

This paper argues that analytical jurisprudence has been insufficiently attentive to three significant puzzles highlighted by the legal pluralist tradition: the existence of commonalities between different types of law, the possibility of a distinction between law and non-law, and the explanatory centrality of the state. I further argue that the resolution of these questions sets the stage for a renewed agenda of analytical jurisprudence and has to be considered in attempts for reconciliation between the academic traditions of analytical jurisprudence and legal pluralism, often called “pluralist jurisprudence.” I also argue that the resolution of these problems affects the empirical, doctrinal, …

I’M Interested In Autoethnography, But How Do I Do It?, Robin Cooper, Bruce V. Lilyea

The Qualitative Report

Autoethnography is one of the qualitative research methodologies that remains somewhat mysterious to many scholars. While the use of autoethnography has expanded across numerous fields, it can be difficult to find much guidance about the procedures involved in conducting an autoethnography. Recognizing both the flexibility and creativity inherent in autoethnography, as well as the need for rigor in achieving meaningful research results, we offer in this article some suggestions and reflections regarding the process of conducting an autoethnography – from developing the research question to reporting the findings. These recommendations draw from both narrative and ethnographic research methodologies, as well …

More Than Words: Articulating The Multisensory Experiences Of Protected Area Visitors In Southern Nevada, Sara Nicole Temme

Dissertations and Theses

The complex sensory experiences of visitors to U.S. protected areas are not well understood. Previous research investigates visitor activities, motivations, and the ways place attachment cultivates support for conservation activities and other pro-environmental behavior. However, it is unclear how protected area visitor sensory experiences contribute to these behaviors. This study aims to articulate the multisensory experiences of visitors to the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex and the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area in southern Nevada, U.S.A. Specifically, it demonstrates the complexity of these experiences as present, intertwined, and embodied in all visit phases: before, during, and after. Utilizing a mixed-method …

Un'orrida Bellezza: Religious Polychrome Sculpture In The Kingdom Of Naples (1503-1714), Lindsay Rose Elizabeth Sheedy

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation, “Un’orrida bellezza: Religious Polychrome Sculpture in the Kingdom of Naples,” situates polychrome sculpture in the evolving religious and cultural landscape of Southern Italy during the Regno di Napoli (1503-1714). In this period, a series of upheavals inextricably altered the fabric of the Kingdom of Naples, including the establishment of the Spanish viceroyalty in 1503, the Counter Reformation in the mid-sixteenth century, and a series of crippling plagues. This period of change, trauma, and subjugation provoked reactions from all levels of culture, making Southern Italy a fertile laboratory of innovation and exchange. These shifts took physical form in polychrome …

Most people think of soapberry bugs as little more than a nuisance, if they think of them at all. Found across much of the southeastern United States, the oblong insect is harmless to humans and likes to hang out on plants native to the soapberry family, hence its straightforward name.
