Childminding Professionalism And Professionalisation In Ireland: A Different Story, Miriam O'Regan, Ann Marie Halpenny, Noirin Hayes

Articles

This research focussed on documenting the praxis and paedagogy of paid, professional childminding (family childcare/day care) in Ireland. It explored professionalism and professionalisation among childminders in the context of the evolving understanding of professionalism in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) nationally and internationally. The research was conducted within the framework of Ecocultural Theory (ECT) on the eve of mandatory regulation of childminding against the backdrop of Irish ECEC policy. A mixed method approach was adopted, using the Ecocultural Family Interview for Childminders (EFICh), including participants’ photographs, case study surveys, researcher field notes and holistic ratings. We present findings related …

Coral Reef Restoration Monitoring Through An Environmental Engineering And Social-Ecological Lens, Michelle C. Platz Feb 2022

Coral Reef Restoration Monitoring Through An Environmental Engineering And Social-Ecological Lens, Michelle C. Platz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Florida Reef Tract (FRT) has experienced catastrophic coral cover declines since the 1970s, and active coral restoration is therefore needed to recover ecosystem integrity, preserve intrinsic values, and guarantee the provision of ecosystem services on which humans rely. While the coral restoration field’s ability to grow and outplant coral has improved extensively in the last two decades, this growth has led to the development of research gaps pertaining to restoration monitoring, specifically regarding the technical capacity to perform long term monitoring, spatial and temporal resolution, and metrics with which to quantify changes in ecosystem function resulting from restoration. The …

Incorrect Athlete, Incorrect Woman: Ioc Gender Regulations And The Boundaries Of Womanhood In Professional Sports, Sabeehah Ravat Feb 2022

Incorrect Athlete, Incorrect Woman: Ioc Gender Regulations And The Boundaries Of Womanhood In Professional Sports, Sabeehah Ravat

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Professional sports are a cornerstone of mainstream capitalist society, a site where issuesof race, class, gender, nation, and religion amongst others are produced, contested, and negotiated. In particular, gender regulation policies serve to delineate the acceptable boundaries of racialised gender and create sanctioned opportunities to surveil transgressive bodies. In this thesis, I posit that professional sports rely on and protect uniformity of gender experience to regulate and exclude trans* and intersex participation and, furthermore, that gender regulation policies delineate the boundaries of gender and particularly womanhood in a way that further marginalises nonbinary athletes. Using critical discourse analysis, a methodology …

A Comparative Approach To Promotional Methods For Seasonal Influenza Immunizations To Dorm Dwelling College Freshmen, Gina Aalgaard Kelly, Carolyn Townsend Feb 2022

A Comparative Approach To Promotional Methods For Seasonal Influenza Immunizations To Dorm Dwelling College Freshmen, Gina Aalgaard Kelly, Carolyn Townsend

Great Plains Sociologist

Introduction: Comparing tailored e-mail messaging to mailed postcards promoting seasonal influenza immunizations for dorm dwelling college freshmen is important for early health prevention and promotion. Dorm dwelling college students are particularly at risk of viral diseases due to the close proximity of their living conditions. Understanding influences with health care decisions and practices is therefore also important with the college dorm dwelling population. Method: A convenience sample was used to collect data from influenza clinic participants on a Midwest college campus over three seasonal flu periods. A Health-E card was sent in 2010 via university issued student e-mail accounts informing …

Quality Of Life In Nursing Homes: A Theoretical And Empirical Review, Gina Aalgaard Kelly Feb 2022

Quality Of Life In Nursing Homes: A Theoretical And Empirical Review, Gina Aalgaard Kelly

Great Plains Sociologist

Quality of life is a complex and multi-dimensional notion which individuals and their families try to attain. This paper provides an overview of quality of life literature guided by Lawton’s (1983: 351) “Four Sectors of the Good Life”.” This model of organization demonstrates a multidimensional conceptual view of quality of life in which theoretical and empirical domains were recognized in the literature. Parameters used to understand quality of life and how it is studied provide the framework of the review, specifically in the nursing home setting. Quality of life is of growing importance because people are living longer and population …

An Exploratory Study Of Job Satisfaction Among Mail Handlers And Sorters In A Package-Delivery Organization, A. Olu Oyinlade, Carla Garay Feb 2022

An Exploratory Study Of Job Satisfaction Among Mail Handlers And Sorters In A Package-Delivery Organization, A. Olu Oyinlade, Carla Garay

Great Plains Sociologist

This is an exploratory study of the correlates and predictors of job satisfaction among mail handlers and sorters, in a package-delivery organization, used as case study. Job satisfaction has been widely studied, but most studies have largely neglected manual laborers. This study is a shift from traditional research participants (health care providers, the military, scientists) of job satisfaction studies to manual workers. A research framework consisting of a theoretical and a demographic model was used to establish correlates and predictors of job satisfaction. Findings of correlation analyses and three regression models (used for triangulation) showed that ten variables were correlated …

The spring 2022 issue of Wooster magazine recognizes the legacy of Black voices and student activism at The College of Wooster. This issue of the magazine outlines Black history and some of the student activism that has driven needed change at the College. It also features the stories of some of the many Wooster alumni who have gone on to make powerful …

A Vincentian Reading Of The Pandemic: Hope Beyond All Reasonable Expectation, Guillermo Campuzano C.M.

Vincentian Studies

Guillermo Campuzano, vice president of DePaul University’s Office of Mission and Ministry, reflects on the inequities and societal and environmental fragility that the COVID-19 pandemic reveals. Vincentian spirituality and theology have always been attuned to what is happening in the world and finding God’s call to action within current events. They can be used to maintain hope and a sense of God’s presence in the midst of the world disaster and can shape our response to the problems we are facing. Campuzano describes the pandemic’s effects on the university community and how the university’s leadership responded, drawing lessons that can …

Vincentian Studies

DePaul University’s Steans Center for Community-Based Service Learning created a program called Online Community Engagement (OCE) to safely connect students with communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. As this article says, “OCE provided self- directed modules including reading materials and videos for students focused on issues such as mental health, immigration, community organizing, police accountability, and gentrification. The modules culminated with a live online events on Fridays featuring guests from DePaul and Chicago communities.” OCE proved highly successful, especially because it provided a way for students to meet community organizers. The article profiles some of the most salient lessons featured in …

The Covid-19 Pandemic Surge Of Art And Cultural Property Smuggling, Julia Vastano Feb 2022

The Covid-19 Pandemic Surge Of Art And Cultural Property Smuggling, Julia Vastano

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog

The disruptive ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic are ubiquitous. Therefore, a historiography of the period following March 2020 would not only be superfluous but unnecessarily depressing. It is needless to say that modern life was upended. During the height of the pandemic, there was an increase in property theft. Considerable changes to the rules and regulations of daily life led to increased opportunities for thieves. Global economic distress and high unemployment rates motivated thievery. This logic applies to car break-ins, commercial property thefts, and the theft and smuggling of artwork, and other valuable cultural property.

Lisa Marshall Bashert, Oral History Interview, 2022, Matt Jones Feb 2022

Lisa Marshall Bashert, Oral History Interview, 2022, Matt Jones

Oral Histories

In 2021, Eastern Michigan University Archives lecturer Matt Jones began documenting the story of Ypsilanti’s Human Rights Ordinance #1279 in an effort to explore the ways in which local queer activism has evolved multi-generationally in Ypsilanti. What began as a refusal of service by a local print shop to a small EMU student group quickly turned into a years-long battle over who was deserving of basic human rights. To the LGBTQ activists and community members documented here, they had always been present in the community: working, paying taxes, painting their houses, mowing their lawns, attending council meetings, and even serving …

Tempering Our Expectations: Drinking, Smoking, And The Economy Of A Western Massachusetts Farmstead-Tavern, Laura E. Masur, Aaron F. Miller

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Between 1800 and 1830, William Sanford and his family operated a tavern in Hawley, a hilltown in western Massachusetts. The establishment was located on the town’s common, adjacent to the community’s Congregational meetinghouse and several other taverns. At the initiative of the local historical preservation group the Sons and Daughters of Hawley, archaeologists, students, teachers, and community members excavated the tavern site between 2011 and 2014. Historical and archaeological research indicates that William Sanford’s homestead functioned not only as a tavern, but also as a farm, store, smithy, and occasionally a court of law. Material evidence of alcohol and tobacco …

"Set Fier To The Town Of Charlestown Wich Consumed Almost Every House In That Town": An Analysis Of Window Leads From The Three Cranes Tavern Site, Timothy B. Riordan

Northeast Historical Archaeology

A lack of published data on window leads from sites in New England prompted a project analyzing the sample from the Three Cranes Tavern site in Charlestown, MA. This structure was built c. 1629 in anticipation of John Winthrop's arrival to settle Massachusetts Bay. For most of its existence, it was used as an ordinary. Like the rest of Charlestown, it was destroyed on June 17, 1775 during the battle of Bunker Hill. Excavated as part of the "Big Dig" in 1985, the sample included 148 items identified as window leads. Within this sample were window leads, window ties, and …

"A Quixote In Imagination Might Here Find...An Ideal Baronage": Landscapes Of Power, Enslavement, Resistance, And Freedom At Sherwood Forest Plantation, Lauren K. Mcmillan

Northeast Historical Archaeology

In the winter of 1862, two armed forces descended upon Fredericksburg; one blue, one gray. After suffering heavy losses during the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Union Army retreated to the northern banks of the Rappahannock River, making camp in Stafford County. From December 1862 until June 1863, the Union Army overran local plantations and small farm holdings throughout the area, including at Sherwood Forest, the home of the Fitzhugh family. Sherwood Forest was used as field hospital, a signal station, a balloon launch reconnaissance station, and a general encampment during the winter and spring of 1862/1863. Throughout the roughly six-month …
