A Botanical Mystery The Elusive Trail Of The Datil Pepper To St. Augustine, Jean Andrews
Florida Historical Quarterly
Since December 1984, when Peppers: The Domesticated Capsicums was published, interest in growing and eating capsicums has increased dramatically. Prior to that publication, little attention had been given to the historical aspects of the genus Capsicum, which is comprised of all the green and red peppers (pimientos) in the world, but does not include its namesake black pepper (pimienta) or Piper nigrum, a native of India, and a much wanted item in the pre-Columbian spice trade. Five-hundred years ago, while Christopher Columbus was searching for a shorter route to India and the East Indies in order to break the Muslim …

Aid Societies Were Not Alike: Northern Teachers In Post-Civil War Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.
Aid Societies Were Not Alike: Northern Teachers In Post-Civil War Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
Northern teachers in the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction have been the subject of various studies.1 This literature emphasizes the origins and development of the aid societies that sponsored the teachers, and it focuses upon major figures who shaped educational policy. At the same time, little attention details the activities of early northern teachers in Florida within the context of developments in other places. Florida’s experience varies from other parts of the South, and it offers, by contrast, a fresh perspective on the regional experience. Ansel Eddy Kinne’s career provides an opportunity for understanding aid societies. From early …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The issue of scientific measurement of somatotypes of athletes with physical disabilities and the type of physical activity undertaken by them is poorly documented in the literature. The aim of the study is to determine what type of body composition is characteristic of athletes with physical disabilities, engaging in various types of physical activity, such as swimming, sitting volleyball and weight lifting. Material and methods: Sixty men, aged 20-30, were qualified for the study. Each study participant had a motor dysfunction and was in intellectual norm. For the research protocol, Sheldon’s typology in Heath and Carter modification was used. …

Influence Of Functional Abilities On The Quality Of Refereeing In Handball, Ivan Belcic, Lana Ruzic, Alen Marosevic
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Several factors contributed to the evolution of handball, and one of the most important changes for faster, more dynamic and aggressive game is the change of rules which increase physical demands of players and especially referees. The aim of this study is to determine whether functional abilities have an influence on the quality of refereeing. Material and methods: 31 subjects were involved in the research, all of them top-level referees with an average age of 34.66±6.44, height 184.02±5.87 cm and body mass 91.14±10.61 kg. Testing was divided into two parts: the first part was spiroergometric progressive test on a …
Color Matters: The Creation Of The Saralee Doll, Gordon Patterson
Color Matters: The Creation Of The Saralee Doll, Gordon Patterson
Florida Historical Quarterly
"It had begun with Christmas,” declared Claudia, Toni Morrison’s narrator in her novel The Bluest Eye. “The big, the special, the loving gift was always a big, blue-eyed, Baby Doll. From the clucking sounds of adults I knew that the doll represented what they thought was my fondest wish. I was bemused with the thing itself, and the way it looked. What was I supposed to do with it?“1 Through much of the twentieth century, generations of African-American children experienced the full force of this fictional character’s dilemma. Their skin color posed a barrier between their self-image and the image …

Florida Historical Quarterly
In any enumeration of American historians of Florida who have significantly advanced the craft and expanded the field, one would name George Rainsford Fairbanks (1820-1906), our state’s first serious historian in the English language and charter member of the Historical Society of Florida in 1856; Thomas Buckingham Smith (1810-1871), first American scholar to collect and copy documentary materials for the history of Florida from archives in Spain; Woodbury Lowery (1853- 1906), whose two volumes, The Spanish Settlements within the Present Limits of the United States,1 first placed Florida historiography on a professional footing and established standards of research and citation …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The need to identify, analyze and establish relationships between destinations and tourist emission, as terminus points between which the tourist circulation takes place, arises from the structural and functional complexity of tourism, on the one hand, and from its unprecedented expansion, on the other hand. Material and methods: Within the present study, which concerned Romania as a tourist destination, a number of specific, determinative indicators for the emission areas and the tourist destinations were identified and analyzed. Results: The obtained results focused on the analysis of: capacity, hierarchy, spatial distribution and establishment of relations between tourist emission / reception …

How Does History Of Sport Rank In Sciences – A Discussion Of The Paradigm Of The History Of Sport, Piotr Godlewski
How Does History Of Sport Rank In Sciences – A Discussion Of The Paradigm Of The History Of Sport, Piotr Godlewski
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
No science can be a province of itself without its theories, neither can history of sport be. Hence a question arises of how it is possible for specific research programmes to have been pursued for more than half a century without their own theories and the paradigm [1], understood here as a collection of concepts and theories composing the methodological basis. What is more, a group of researchers with considerable achievements in historiography of sport, physical education and tourism have not produced anything that could be called a methodology. Retrospective insight into sport may take two forms: research into historic …

Olympism And Himalaism, Andrzej Pawlucki
Olympism And Himalaism, Andrzej Pawlucki
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
As the title makes it clear, this article concerns the anthropological issue involving the figures of an Olympic athlete and a Himalayan climber. On a broader, philosophical level, I consider and explain the differences between Olympism and Himalaism, as well as the predecessor of Himalaism, Alpinism. The study aims to explain the reason for the origin of Olympism as a social movement independent of Himalaism. To understand why Olympism and Himalaism should be considered separately, one must go back to the dawn of the two modern events: “visiting the mountains” and “populating the stadiums”. The philosophical method was used in …

British Colonial Strategies To Control The Influenza Epidemic Of 1918 To 1919 In Ashanti, Dennis Baffour Awuah
British Colonial Strategies To Control The Influenza Epidemic Of 1918 To 1919 In Ashanti, Dennis Baffour Awuah
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis seeks to examine the strategies and policies that were employed by the British colonial administration to control the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919 in Ashanti. I argue that the varying philosophies of both the colonial administration and the Native population in Ashanti on health and medicine influenced the response trajectory to the disease. It also explores the aspects of Indigenous medical practices which are largely concerned with the religion or beliefs of the people. Before the outbreak of influenza, the colonial administration started a campaign to promote Western medicine while antagonizing Indigenous medicine. To an extent, this made the …
Periyar: A Study In Political Atheism, Karthick Ram Manoharan
Periyar: A Study In Political Atheism, Karthick Ram Manoharan
Books
This volume is a thematic study of the work and ideas of Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. It analyses Periyar's emancipatory, irreverent and revolutionary critique of religion using the idea of 'political atheism'. Drawing extensively from Periyar's own writings, contemporary accounts of Dravidian politics and the theory of Anarchism, this groundbreaking study provides a new perspective on Periyar's engagements with religion, caste and their collaborations with the state. Periyar is not just a new appraisal of 'Periyarism' but a reminder of its continuing significance in global conversations on justice, equality and liberty.
The Continuity Mindset For Christian Mission, Jack T. Davison
The Continuity Mindset For Christian Mission, Jack T. Davison
Great Commission Research Journal
Missionaries from the Global North regularly serve as trainers for Christians in the Global South. From personal experience, missionaries are regularly seen as being qualified to do this work simply because of their position. Rather than missionaries assuming they are competent purely on the basis of their titles, I believe they should instead practice the Continuity Mindset for Christian Mission, a mindset that emphasizes the continuity of one’s identity and ministry in one’s home culture with one’s identity and ministry in the host culture. This practice includes elements of vulnerable mission, nonresidential mission, tentmaking, cultural intelligence, and authentic leadership. I …
