E. G. White's Human View And It's Educational Application To Adventist Education, Jinseop Kim Mar 2022

E. G. White's Human View And It's Educational Application To Adventist Education, Jinseop Kim

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

I would like to present the educational applications to Adventist Education based on the human view of E. G. White who laid the philosophical foundation. According to her, in order to understand the work of education, it is necessary to consider human nature and God's purpose in creation. So I will first talk about the human state at the creation, God's purpose for them, and His educational approach, and secondly, about the human state after corruption, God's plan for them, and educational approach to him. Through this research, I expect to understand how the class in Adventist educational institutions can …

Shāh Walī Allāh In Defence Of Ibn Taymiyyah, Muzzammil Ahmad, Ian Greer Mar 2022

Shāh Walī Allāh In Defence Of Ibn Taymiyyah, Muzzammil Ahmad, Ian Greer

Faculty Journal Articles

Until now, only a short excerpt from the eighteenth-century South Asian reformist Shāh Walī Allāh’s (d. 1176/1762) treatise in defence of the medieval Syrian theologian Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728/1328) has been published in English. In addition to providing a full translation of Risālah fī Manāqib Ibn Taymiyyah wa ’l-Difā‘ ‘anhu (Epistle on the Virtues of Ibn Taymiyyah and in His Defence), this article argues that Shāh Walī Allāh’s due attention for Ibn Taymiyyah is principally a defence of his own work for the larger Walī Allāhī project, heavily inspired by the latter, and an effort to reconcile thinkers as disparate …

Pathetic Beauty: Mono No Aware In Hollywood Cinema –To Family And Friends In These Estranged Times–, Aaron Francis Ward Mar 2022

Pathetic Beauty: Mono No Aware In Hollywood Cinema –To Family And Friends In These Estranged Times–, Aaron Francis Ward

Japanese Society and Culture

Mono no aware is considered to be one of the central-most Japanese aesthetics and distinctive to Japanese identity (Keene 1995; Miller 2011). This aesthetic standpoint finds wistful beauty in the transient, and is most often translated to ‘beauty in pathos’ or ‘the ah-ness of things’ (Hume 1995), as exemplified in the Heian-era classic, The Tale of Genji (Murasaki 1981). To the outside world, mono no aware is most commonly associated with cherry-blossom viewing, where the short-lived existence of the falling cherry blossom is seen as a metonym for contemplation of the beauty in the transience of life itself. Although this …

Variación Lingüística De La Cortesía Verbal En El Discurso Académico Escrito: Atenuación E Intensificación De La Voz Del Autor En La Evaluación De Las Fuentes, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

From Classroom To Gallery Floor: A Processual Exploration Of Rene Saheb’S (Meta)Physical Engagements With Clay, Kasper Tromp

Regards

This article presents a case study detailing the creative process of Iranian artist Rene Saheb. It analyzes the various stages, developments, and challenges Saheb went through while she explored the medium of clay, which was new to her artistic repertoire. Rather than focusing on outward properties of ceramics such as style or technique, the artist’s inward experiences of her medium and creative process are foregrounded by means of interviews.
As Saheb frequently turns to Islamic mysticism and poetry as conceptual anchorage throughout her creative process, her engagements with the ceramic medium will be discussed in light of relevant Islamic discourses …

History Or Project? The Double Life Of Islamic Art Since The 1970s, Hamed Yousefi Mar 2022

History Or Project? The Double Life Of Islamic Art Since The 1970s, Hamed Yousefi

Regards

This article argues that since the 1970s a duality divides the concept of Islamic Art. On the one hand, we have Islamic Art as the subject matter of a modern mode of historical inquiry, invented and developed in the colonial period in Europe but then taken up by scholars from around the world, including Muslim academics. This is the Islamic Art of Islamic Art History as a field of secular scholarship.
But then, in the decolonization period, and more pronouncedly since the 1970s, we witness the birth of another concept of Islamic Art that is not focused on the past. …

The End Of The Tributary Relationship Between Vietnam And China In The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, Nguyen Thi My Hanh

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

This article explores the final movement and transformation of “traditional” diplomatic activities between Vietnam and China in a unique historical period from 1858 to 1885. In particular, this period begins when French colonialists, a third factor, appeared and concludes when the tributary relationship between Vietnam and China ended in accordance with the Tianjin Treaty signed between France and China. Vietnam tried to maintain peaceful and open relations with China. Concurrently, the Qing Dynasty strived to maintain a relationship with its Vietnamese “vassal.” The Qing Dynasty needed both the political and economic interests of its vassal, especially when its own prestige …

Stateless hill tribes living with HIV/AIDS are the most vulnerable population in Thailand. This article adopts the issue of the structural and cultural violence of Johan Galtung as a conceptual framework and analytical tool to narrate their experiences. Data encompassing the experiences of structural and cultural violence were collected from the 53 eligible stateless hill tribes living with HIV/AIDS recruited from 10 district hospitals and 15 communities in Chiang Rai, Thailand, using a combination of the snowball technique and purposive sampling. The present authors argue that the stateless hill tribes living with HIV/AIDS mainly experienced the following two dimensions of …

Impact Of Tissue Processing On Microbiological Colonization In The Context Of Placentophagy, Sophia K. Johnson, Jana Pastuschek, Denial C. Benyshek, Yvonne Heimann, Anne Möller, Jürgen Rödel, Jacob White, Janine Zöllkau, Tanja Groten

Anthropology Faculty Research

A mother’s postpartum ingestion of raw or processed placental tissue—referred to as human maternal placentophagy—is an emerging health trend observed in industrialized nations. Placenta is commonly consumed as small pieces of raw tissue, or as raw or steamed dehydrated pulverized and encapsulated tissue. To investigate the potential neonatal health risks of this behavior, the present study focused on microbial colonization of processed placenta preparations with potentially pathogenic bacteria Streptococcus agalactiae (Group-B-Streptococci; GBS) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). In the clinical approach placentas from 24 mothers were analyzed. Two placentas, from 13 mothers with confirmed positive maternal GBS status, showed GBS-growth …

The Ship As An Extension Of Flag State Territory And An Entity With Human Attributes - Is It Time To Jettison These Legal Fictions?, Gotthard Mark Gauci

Plymouth Business School

This article questions the need for the use of two legal fictions in modern maritime law: that a vessel/ship can in certain instances be treated as an extension of flag state territory; that a vessel/ship is an entity with human attributes. The article addresses the first ‘fiction’ mainly in the context of applicable international law as well as English law; the second ‘fiction’ is addressed mainly in the context of English law although selective reference is made to both primary and secondary legal sources from the United States. The article concludes that the two fictions are only of limited value …

Black Cemeteries Matter: The Erasure Of Historic Black Cemeteries In Polk County, Florida, Juliana C. Waters

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the past several years, the Tampa Bay area has experienced a reckoning with regard to the intentional erasure, destruction, and abandonment of historic African American cemeteries such as Zion Cemetery in Tampa or St. Matthews Baptist Church Cemetery in Clearwater. Scholars, journalists, community members, archaeologists, and others have contributed to a growing movement that aims to identify and document these sacred sites in an effort to prevent further destruction. In this vein, this project aimed to identify and record cemeteries in Polk County, examine the processes leading to the erasure of historic Black cemeteries, the history surrounding erasure on …

Ancient And Modern Genomics Of The Ohlone Indigenous Population Of California, Alissa L. Severson, Brian F. Byrd, Elizabeth K. Mallott, Amanda C. Owings, Michael Degiorgio, Alida De Flamingh, Charlene Nijmeh, Monica V. Arellano, Alan Leventhal, Noah A. Rosenberg, Ripan S. Malhi

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Traditional knowledge, along with archaeological and linguistic evidence, documents that California supports cultural and linguistically diverse Indigenous populations. Studies that have included ancient genomes in this region, however, have focused primarily on broad-scale migration history of the North American continent, with relatively little attention to local population dynamics. Here, in a partnership involving researchers and the Muwekma Ohlone tribe, we analyze genomic data from ancient and present-day individuals from the San Francisco Bay Area in California: 12 ancient individuals dated to 1905 to 1826 and 601 to 184 calibrated years before the present (cal BP) from two archaeological sites and …
