Revealing The Ideology Of Normal: Using Chat To Explore The Activity Of School, Brooke Moore Ph.D. Apr 2022

Revealing The Ideology Of Normal: Using Chat To Explore The Activity Of School, Brooke Moore Ph.D.

Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications

The idea of “normal” in schools is problematic. It arbitrates the way educators think about ability, achievement, and behavior. Normal implies a hierarchy of student abilities, suggesting that some can achieve and some cannot. For students who cannot achieve at the same rate as their peers, they are blamed as many assume the problem is the child. Students who deviate from normal are often characterized as different by race, language use, socioeconomic status, or perceived ability. This has historically led to educational inequities. Equating difference with deficits is problematic as US schools are growing in diversity daily. Drawing from Cultural …

Making Forests, Making Communities: An Ethnography Of Reforestation In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Megan Brown Apr 2022

Making Forests, Making Communities: An Ethnography Of Reforestation In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Megan Brown

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Reforestation is not just planting trees in the ground. More than net increase in forest cover, reforestation is a complex political endeavor undertaken by both humans and non-humans and a popular climate change mitigation tactic. However, little research has examined the dynamics between selection of specific reforestation strategies, health, and community resilience, particularly with attention to entanglements between the lives of both human and non-human forest dwellers. This ethnographic work, based on six months of in-person fieldwork and six months of digital ethnography, examines reforestation and forest relations in Costa Rica’s Monte Verde zone, a region which experienced widespread deforestation, …

Direct Evidence For Geophyte Exploitation In The Wyoming Basin, Kaley Joyce, Lisbeth A. Louderback, Erick Robinson Apr 2022

Direct Evidence For Geophyte Exploitation In The Wyoming Basin, Kaley Joyce, Lisbeth A. Louderback, Erick Robinson

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the Wyoming Basin, archaeological sites dating from the Early Archaic to Late Prehistoric are often found associated with or adjacent to dense populations of Cymopterus bulbosus (springparsley), a nutritious geophyte that would have been an important food source for prehistoric humans living in the region. Experimental data have shown that the caloric return rates of C. bulbosus were enough to support seasonal exploitation by foragers, yet there has been no direct evidence for the use of this geophyte from the archaeological record. In this study, we examine starch granules from 10 ground stone tools excavated from two stratified, multicomponent …

The Social Science Of Institutional Transformation: Intersectional Change In The Academy, Shauna A. Morimoto Apr 2022

The Social Science Of Institutional Transformation: Intersectional Change In The Academy, Shauna A. Morimoto

Sociology and Criminology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines intersectional praxis as an approach to institutional transformation, arguing that intersectionality is both a catalyst for and outcome of gender equity efforts in the social sciences and other academic STEM fields. As such, approaching gender equity intersectionally can be understood as a way that theory and practice are co-constitutive in social science and hence an important aspect of transforming academic institutions. Through a case study of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE program for gender equity in STEM, I look at the development of ADVANCE from an effort to support women in scientific fields to becoming …

The City Of Gods And Fortune: An Architectural And Urban History Of Daulatabad, Ca. 13th–15th Centuries, Mohit Manohar Apr 2022

The City Of Gods And Fortune: An Architectural And Urban History Of Daulatabad, Ca. 13th–15th Centuries, Mohit Manohar

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The fortified city of Daulatabad in Deccan India was of comparable size and prestige to Delhi between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. Daulatabad was situated on important pilgrimage and mercantile routes and attracted immigrants from various parts of the world. Due to its significance and strategic location, political powers from northern and southern India—practicing both Hinduism and Islam—fought fierce battles over the city. Several of them made it their capital. Despite its importance, Daulatabad is often treated as a footnote to Delhi, and its rich architecture and urban layout have not been art historically examined. The City of Gods and …

Am I That Easy To Forget?: The Sounds And Forms Of Black Women’S Labor In The Mid-Twentieth-Century Music Industry, Clara Wilson Hawken

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Am I That Easy to Forget?: The Sounds and Forms of Black Women’s Labor in the Mid-Twentieth-Century Music Industry argues that the history of Black popular music’s commodification during the latter half of the twentieth century cannot be adequately understood without accounting for the myriad forms of social and economic labor that Black women undertook. The project excavates historically neglected musicians, managerial figures, and musical institutions within and between key urban sites of Black musical innovation in order to analyze the work of Black women throughout all corners of the music industry—from radio disc jockey to record label executive, talent …

Now I Walk On Foreign Soil: Settler Colonialism In Argentina’S Southern Borderlands, 1867-1899, Hannah Greenwald Apr 2022

Now I Walk On Foreign Soil: Settler Colonialism In Argentina’S Southern Borderlands, 1867-1899, Hannah Greenwald

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

“Now I Walk On Foreign Soil: Settler Colonialism in Argentina’s Southern Borderlands, 1867-1899” examines the relationship between military violence, Indigenous resistance, and settler colonial state formation in Argentina. This dissertation charts how during the so-called “Conquest of the Desert” (1879-1885), formerly autonomous Indigenous peoples in the pampas and Patagonia were subjugated to Argentine state rule through military violence, and discursively erased from Argentina’s national community. Employing the methodologies of microhistory and ethnohistory, alongside the frameworks of settler colonial theory and genocide studies, it examines the intertwined forms of military and nonmilitary violence intended to physically and ideologically eradicate Indigenous people …

Economic Agency And Risk Mitigation Among The Classic Period Maya At Holtun, Guatemala, Dawn Crawford Apr 2022

Economic Agency And Risk Mitigation Among The Classic Period Maya At Holtun, Guatemala, Dawn Crawford

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

Research into social inequality among the Maya often focuses on how elites gained power, while my research sought to identify how both elites and non-elites used economic decision-making to maintain and/or augment their status. My research tested for economic agency and risk mitigation strategies among elite and non-elite households at a single Maya site, Holtun, in the Central Lowlands. Its purpose was also to test for conservation behavior during a period of abundance.

The data for this dissertation was collected through the excavation of civic ceremonial and domestic plazas, and through lithic analyses of obsidian and chert artifacts from the …

Storytelling And Its Role In Cultural Heritage, Jacob Barker, Katrina Powers Apr 2022

Storytelling And Its Role In Cultural Heritage, Jacob Barker, Katrina Powers

Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life

In our research, we wanted to explore how storytelling connects people to cultural heritage. Specifically, we were interested in how mythology, folklore, and religion are displayed. In one case, we explored how mythology and folklore in popular fictional novels connected readers to cultural heritage. Our second focus examined how storytelling amongst immigrant communities connected them to their cultural heritage.

Triggered Emasculation In Southern Literature: Applying The Masculine Overcompensation Thesis, Delaney Holt Apr 2022

Triggered Emasculation In Southern Literature: Applying The Masculine Overcompensation Thesis, Delaney Holt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Coined by Stanford University sociologists Dr. Rob Willer and Dr. Christabel L. Rogalin in 2005, the masculine overcompensation thesis asserts that a man will reciprocate challenges to his masculinity with his own intense display(s) of masculinity. This new thesis combined the preliminary research completed by Adler and Freud, offering a new perspective on masculinity. Alongside societal and psychological applications, the masculine overcompensation thesis can also be applied to fictional literary relationships, especially within the pages of three southern novels: Lewis Nordan’s Wolf Whistle, Ron Rash’s One Foot in Eden, and Lewis Nordan’s The Sharpshooter Blues. A common thread of overcompensatory …

Where The Spirit Of The Lord Is, There Is Freedom: A Critique Of Liberal Religious Freedom, Joseph Hempfling Apr 2022

Where The Spirit Of The Lord Is, There Is Freedom: A Critique Of Liberal Religious Freedom, Joseph Hempfling

Masters of Theological Studies

We seek to develop a theological and metaphysical critique of the liberal understanding of religious freedom that is juridical in nature, revealing that what it can only mean by both “religion” and “freedom” are inadequate under the light of Christian orthodoxy. Not only is inadequate, but it does not allow orthodoxy to flourish under it, swallowing up all would-be competitors under its own liberal monism. This study pulls heavily from Roman Catholic Communio theology and its already broad critique of liberalism and liberal religious freedom, but also correlates those enlightening critiques with Pentecostalism, bringing an analogous critique of liberal religious …

A Proposed Curriculum To Improve The Scientific Literacy Of Pastoral Leadership In The Church, Kacey Mewborn Apr 2022

A Proposed Curriculum To Improve The Scientific Literacy Of Pastoral Leadership In The Church, Kacey Mewborn

Selected Honors Theses

Scientific illiteracy is a widespread reality in the Christian church today. The observatory and evidentiary nature of science seems to strongly contradict the faith-based belief in religion that often lacks physical evidence. This contradiction has incited many different conflicts between the congregation of the church and proponents of scientific advancement. A potential cause of this division is that the current education provided for church leaders is severely lacking in exposure to scientific topics that would allow these leaders to effectively communicate with their congregation when scientific issues are raised. Therefore, this research proposes a supplementary curriculum in the form of …

Freedom With Contingencies: Obstacles To Life After Prison, Megan Lowe Apr 2022

Freedom With Contingencies: Obstacles To Life After Prison, Megan Lowe

University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts

We all have conceptions of life in prison, but what do inmates experience when they return to society after serving their sentence? Former prisoners face a myriad of obstacles which stand between them and truly returning to life outside of prison. They lack what they had before incarceration. Familial relations, social networks, job security, and the guarantee of shelter are all liable to have changed in nature or be completely nonexistent after the duration of a prison sentence (Jones, 2021). They can no longer rely on things they had become accustomed to in prison. The structure of prison life can …

The Saga Of Reginald Mcfadden—"Pennsylvania's Willie Horton" And The Commutation Of Life Sentences In The Commonwealth: Part Ii, Regina Austin Apr 2022

The Saga Of Reginald Mcfadden—"Pennsylvania's Willie Horton" And The Commutation Of Life Sentences In The Commonwealth: Part Ii, Regina Austin

JCLC Online

The saga of the commutation of Reginald McFadden is a tortuous story of blunders, coincidences, and numerous instances of governmental officials tempting fate. It has the makings of a Serial true-crime podcast. In states throughout the country, there are lifers who are unfairly paying the price for the actions of one person who should never have had her or his life sentence commuted. This is the second in a series of two essays that explore Reginald McFadden’s commutation. This Part considers whether, in hindsight, there was any sound basis for McFadden’s release given the policy grounds for commutations and describes …

Establishment’S Political Priority To Free Exercise, Marc O. Degirolami Apr 2022

Establishment’S Political Priority To Free Exercise, Marc O. Degirolami

Notre Dame Law Review

Americans are beset by disagreement about the First Amendment. Progressive scholars are attacking the venerable liberal view that First Amendment rights must not be constricted to secure communal, political benefits. To prioritize free speech rights, they say, reflects an unjust inflation of individual interest over our common political commitments. These disagreements afflict the Religion Clauses as well. Critics claim that religious exemption has become more important than the values of disestablishment that define the polity. Free exercise exemption, they argue, has subordinated establishment.

This Article contests these views. The fundamental rules and norms constituting the political regime—what the Article calls …
