Fish On: Pensacola's Red Snapper Fishery, Jason T. Paupp Apr 2022

Fish On: Pensacola's Red Snapper Fishery, Jason T. Paupp

Florida Historical Quarterly

In an article he wrote in 1942 for The American Neptune Fred Hunt remembered fishing the Campeche Bank of the northern coast of the Yucatan in the "late 'teens" when the Pensacola red snapper fleet was "the only big American deep-sea fishing fleet using all-sail vessels exclusively." Though he admitted the fleet was perhaps not as picturesque as it seemed to him at his "meeting salt water for the first time," the Alabama native penned a colorful tale of the men who plied the waters of the Gulf and drank away their pay in the bars and saloons of Pensacola. …

Chance, Choice, And Opportunity: Effective Tools For Management, Cynthia Tse Kimberlin Apr 2022

Chance, Choice, And Opportunity: Effective Tools For Management, Cynthia Tse Kimberlin

Management Dynamics

This account offers students and professionals, thoughts on useful strategies in management situations based on the author's life experiences. Since the majority of the readers of Management Dynamics come from India and Southeast Asia, the remarks are directed with them in mind but they could be applied elsewhere as well. The author's career trajectory was not planned. Although 90 per cent happened by chance, chance was not entirely random but led to choice and opportunity. 10 per cent was devoted to strategic planning and preparation. Her expertise lies not in management studies but in the field of ethnomusicology, that is, …

Events That Shaped My Thinking, Cynthia Tse Kimberlin Apr 2022

Events That Shaped My Thinking, Cynthia Tse Kimberlin

Management Dynamics

Issues with which I had to contend are discussed within the context of historical precedent and family influences; discriminatory practices; the politics of political correctness; mentors; gender roles; and the interconnectedness of chance, choice, and opportunity, all of which could serve as catalyst for addressing management issues and new research paradigms.

Aesthetic Preference For Nonredundant Complexity: Key To Creativity, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Aesthetic Preference For Nonredundant Complexity: Key To Creativity, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

The basic principle of all biological and social, and some physical processes is increase of interactive heterogeneity, which evolutionarily raises the sophistication level of intraspecific and interspecific systems. Primates, including humans, and other species of animals such as elephants, are known to create multicolor pictorial patterns on a canvas, holding a painting brush in a hand, or in the case of elephants, wrapping the long "nose" around a painting brush. Therefore the pattern creation has a long evolutionary history. Humans and monkeys branched off 6 or 7 million years ago. Humans and elephants much earlier. Another important consideration is the …

Organizational Environment And Innovation, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Organizational Environment And Innovation, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

There is a popular notion that the life of innovators and inventors is a glorious and enviable one because they have talents which others do not have, and because they can overcome any obstacles. These talents are, in the popular interpretation, something mysterious, indefinable and inimitable. But in reality, the innovators and inventors have to deal with many serious and pernicious obstacles which are unknown to other people. Those who are unaware of the obstacles must become aware of them and must reduce them, because the reduction of these obstacles will greatly facilitate the works of innovators and inventors. Another …

New Dimensions In Business Communication: Unconscious Layers, Strategic Judo, And Camouflaged Reversal, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

New Dimensions In Business Communication: Unconscious Layers, Strategic Judo, And Camouflaged Reversal, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

(1) Individuals differ in: (a) cognitive/cogitative types; (b) modal types: (c) degree of awareness of unconscious layers of thought process; (d) utilization of strategic judo and camouflaged reversal. (2) Cognitive/cogitative types should not be confused with skill types, aptitude types, emotional types, or personality types. (3) Individual differences in cognitive/cogitative types are mostly phenotypically innate. Therefore the assumption that you should be able to make everybody understand you is incorrect. (4) Communicational modal types are: factual mode, contextual mode, pictorial mode, insinuative mode, deceptive mode, etc. (5) Unconscious layers include self-deception, repression of one's own perception, inability to distinguish whether …

Determinants Of Network Learning - A Conceptual Study, Shalini Rahul, Manmohan Rahul Apr 2022

Determinants Of Network Learning - A Conceptual Study, Shalini Rahul, Manmohan Rahul

Management Dynamics

Attention of researchers in the strategic management literature has been drawn to the phenomenon that a firm which develops an ability to learn offers an important source of competitive advantage to it. Thus the concept has been understood from a variety of angles like, levels of learning in organizations, process of learning, outcomes and barriers to learning. On the other hand, firms are increasingly being looked at from the network perspective, since it has been accepted that no organization can function in isolation and rather its existence is affected by the myriad of relationships with other firms, in which it …

Application And Validation Of Heterogram Analysis On Individualism-Collectivism Data Across Three Countries, Alvin Hwang, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Application And Validation Of Heterogram Analysis On Individualism-Collectivism Data Across Three Countries, Alvin Hwang, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

The prevalent method to analyze data from several groups of individuals is to define some ad hoc boundaries of individuals-for example geographic, ethnic or gender boundaries and then compare statistical means and deviations between groups. This method assumes homogeneity within each ad hoc group and treats differences among individuals in each group as subgroup variations. Instead of imposing ad-hoc boundaries, we used a new method "heterogram analysis" (Maruyama, 1999) that looks for response datagenerated grouping of individuals and the meaningfulness of each emerging group. This approach was applied to individual-level individualism-collectivism data from three countries. The results showed five individual …

Spontaneity, Agility, Craftsmen's Pride, And Informalization, Magoroh Maruyama Apr 2022

Spontaneity, Agility, Craftsmen's Pride, And Informalization, Magoroh Maruyama

Management Dynamics

To counteract rigidification by standardization, we need: (1) employees' self-generating experimentation without punishment for failures; (2) letting "the nail which sticks out" grow instead of hammering it down; (3) examining crazy ideas seriously; (4) cultivation of craftsmen's pride instead of filling the requirements like robots; (5) spontaneous change-generating quick interaction among heterogeneous employees (morphogenetic process); (6) barrier-free outbreeding to and from outsiders; (7) elimination of ponderous and rigid procedurism and overcontrol; (8) elimination of inbreeding; (9) mastering the masterpieces before moving ahead.

Management Dynamics For De-Stereotyping The Corporate Culture: An Alternative To European And North American Concepts, Magoroh Maruyama, Kuniko Maruyama Apr 2022

Management Dynamics For De-Stereotyping The Corporate Culture: An Alternative To European And North American Concepts, Magoroh Maruyama, Kuniko Maruyama

Management Dynamics

In countries where the management is not dominated by the established orthodoxy of European and North American theories, principles and practices, it is possible to use alternative concepts with less ponderous resistance. Most of the researchers who follow the established orthodoxy either: (a) take it for granted that the corporate cultures are preconditioned by or reflect their country cultures, and therefore they begin their research with a study of country cultures, and then proceed to interpret corporate cultures in terms of country cultures; or (b) infer the country cultures from an aggregate of corporate cultures. In both cases they intentionally …

Musculoskeletal Markers: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Three Biological Factors On Robusticity, Megan Greene Apr 2022

Musculoskeletal Markers: A Comparison Of The Influence Of Three Biological Factors On Robusticity, Megan Greene

LSU Master's Theses

Research suggests that musculoskeletal markers (MSMs) can provide information about the lives of deceased individuals. The majority of studies focus on single factors that influence the morphology of MSMs in pre-modern societies (i.e., medieval, hunter-gatherers, preindustrial, etc.). This study analyzes MSMs of modern skeletons of 72 females and 83 males from the United States whose ages at death range from 30 to 89 to understand the relationship between various biological factors and MSM morphology. Eight MSMs (attachments of pectoralis major, deltoid, brachialis, supinator, iliopsoas, gluteus maximus, quadriceps, and soleus) were analyzed and categorized as phases zero, one, two, or three …

Lo Afrocubano: Exploring Afro-Cuban Culture In Music, Literature, & Art, Pre- & Post-Cuban Revolution, Grace Maffucci

World Languages and Cultures Student Scholarship

Grace Maffucci ’22
Majors: Music Performance and Spanish
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Monica Simal, Foreign Language Studies

After the abolition of slavery in Cuba in 1886, Black Cubans struggled for equality and a place in a White-dominated society. The twentieth century brought about a deeper exploration of Afro-Cuban culture and identity through several forms of art. Despite the promise of racial equality guaranteed by Fidel Castro at the dawn of the Cuban Revolution, conversations about racial identity were silenced. This study delves into the music, literature, and art of twentieth century Afro-Cuban artists, notably poet Nicolás Guillén, painter Wilfredo Lam, and …

Climate Without Context: Why Climate Change Journalism Is Losing Its Effect, Amanda L. Valentine Apr 2022

Climate Without Context: Why Climate Change Journalism Is Losing Its Effect, Amanda L. Valentine

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

Despite the growing frequency and severity of climate disasters, the news coverage of these events hardly shocks the public like it used to. Environmental journalism has become more “voluminous,” but less complex, ultimately sacrificing quality over quantity to cover as many climate-related events as possible. By analyzing the word choice, key frames, and contexts of climate articles featured in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times over the past five years, this study finds that the frequent decontextualization of climate events and a focus on political actions has banalized climate journalism and rendered it ineffectual.

The Influence Of Black Identity Development On Academic Achievement Of Black College Students At Pwis, Abbey Rae Jerome Apr 2022

The Influence Of Black Identity Development On Academic Achievement Of Black College Students At Pwis, Abbey Rae Jerome

Masters Projects

Past and present literature suggests that racial identity development has a presumably positive influence on Black students’ academic achievement in college settings. The literature also shows that Black students continue to underperform in academic settings when compared to their White counterparts. Throughout this literature and development of an intervention, these issues begin to merge as racial identity development is linked to academic achievement at PWIs. This project explores what exactly it means to develop Black Identity in college, and why this is impacting academic achievement among Black students. Through identification of these issues, a course will be designed in order …

Poetry To Prose: The Influence Of Herodotus On Written History, Frances B. Currie Apr 2022

Poetry To Prose: The Influence Of Herodotus On Written History, Frances B. Currie

Young Historians Conference

In his book, The Histories, Herodotus of Halicarnassus expertly displayed his inquiries into the cultures and conflicts that transformed the Mediterranean world during the Greco-Persian Wars of the fifth century BCE. By writing his narrative in prose, citing his work, and providing cultural reasoning for past events, Herodotus earned himself the nicknames “father of history” and “father of comparative ethnography,” but his inclusion of fables also labeled him the “father of lies.” A historian named Thucydides eventually refined the historical genre to focus on politics without the inclusion of myths, narrowing the discipline of history for another thousand years. …

Beyond Rudolph: The Cultural Impacts Of Reindeer Herding On The Sami, Ava A. Trueworthy Apr 2022

Beyond Rudolph: The Cultural Impacts Of Reindeer Herding On The Sami, Ava A. Trueworthy

Young Historians Conference

The reindeer is a quintessential symbol of the Sami, the indigenous people of Northern Scandinavia. Reindeer have always been integral to Sami culture, but they have not always had the same significance that they do now. In the 16th and 17th centuries, reindeer herding practices shifted from small-scale domestication to large-scale reindeer herding and nomadism. This paper explores the political and cultural dynamics that surrounded this shift: pressure from encroaching settler nations, dwindling resources, and a loss of traditional practices. Ultimately, this shift irrevocably impacted Sami identity. Knowledge of the historical factors surrounding the transition to reindeer nomadism is essential …

Grow National Study Of Grandfamilies During Covid-19: Wave I And Wave Ii Results And Recommendations, Michelle Rosenthal, Kerry Littlewood, Deborah Langosch, Lawrence Cooper, Donna B. Fedus, Amy Devine, Abhishek Pandey

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted families across the globe. This study highlights how a multidisciplinary workgroup, Grandfamilies Outcome Workgroup (GrOW) operationalized a caregiver-centered data cycle to learn how COVID-19 has impacted grandfamilies across the United States. The National Grandfamilies and COVID-19 Wave I (n=600, June 2020) and Wave II (n=225, July 2021) surveys recruited grandfamilies nationwide through GrOW’s network of kinship community partners. Wave I survey results illuminated that all sources of social support were reduced for grandfamilies during the pandemic, except for online support groups. Wave II provided an opportunity to revise the survey to capture emergent issues relevant …

A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Investigation Of Teachers’ Perspectives Towards Integrating Culture Into Chinese-As-Aforeign-Language (Cfl) Curricula And Instruction In American High Schools, Xuan Song Apr 2022

A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Investigation Of Teachers’ Perspectives Towards Integrating Culture Into Chinese-As-Aforeign-Language (Cfl) Curricula And Instruction In American High Schools, Xuan Song

ETD Archive

The importance of integrating culture into foreign language teaching and learning has been acknowledged in the U.S. by the National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project and foreign language professionals. However, it remains challenging for Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language (CFL) teachers to embrace this concept thoroughly and implement it effectively in their CFL classes. The study explores six CFL teachers’ perceptions and experiences towards culture and language integration into their CFL curricula and instruction in American high schools. This study aims to describe the overall landscape of culture-language integration in the CFL discipline in American high schools by revealing the essential knowledge of …
