International Intellectual Property, Access To Health Care, And Human Rights: South Africa V. United States, Winston P. Nagan

Florida Journal of International Law

This Article examines the question of access to patented medicines in international law. It analyzes the extent to which international agreements may lawfully limit affordable versions of these medicines that may be available through parallel imports or compulsory licensing procedures. It considers the concept of intellectual property rights from a national and international perspective to determine how these rights must be sensitive to matters of national sovereignty when extraordinary, life-threatening diseases afflict societies in catastrophic ways. This Article suggests that viewing property (including intellectual property) as a human right requires that its scope be delimited and understood in the context …

Knowledge And Awareness Of Vitamin D Among Pregnant Or Lactating Iraqi Refugee Women: A Call For Different Approaches In Health Education And Outreach, Someireh Amirfaiz, Ed.D.

Journal of Refugee & Global Health

Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy and lactation has negative impacts on maternal, fetal, and infant health. Low health literacy and other social determinants of health may increase the risk of deficiency among refugee women. This qualitative study used a survey and in-depth individual interviews to examine knowledge of vitamin D among ten pregnant or breastfeeding Iraqi refugee women in the United States, and sought participants’ recommendations on culture-centered and participatory health promotion strategies. All participants reported having insufficient information and understanding of vitamin D, its health benefits, and the risks of deficiency. The four primary themes that emerged from the …

Understanding The Complexities Of Drug Transactional Interaction Between The Patient And Pharmacist: A Scoping Review, Md. Shahgahan Miah, Penchan Pradubmook Sherer, Nithima Sumpradit, Luechai Sringernyuang Jun 2022

Understanding The Complexities Of Drug Transactional Interaction Between The Patient And Pharmacist: A Scoping Review, Md. Shahgahan Miah, Penchan Pradubmook Sherer, Nithima Sumpradit, Luechai Sringernyuang

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Drug transaction interaction is a complex global phenomenon in terms of drug safety, quality, and rational use. Non-participatory interactions concerning drugs might lead to adverse effects, as well as loss of resources, time, and money. The complexities of drug transactional interactions in developing countries, especially in the Asian context, are understudied. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to map the scientific evidence that explored the patient–pharmacist interaction patterns for primary health care in relation to drug transactional complexities in pharmacy care settings. For this purpose, we adopted the methodological framework by Arksey and O’Malley (2005). The PubMed, Science Direct, EBSCO discovery …

Digital-Based And Sustainable Tourism Village Development Planning Inpapa Garang Village, Labuan Bajo, Rahmi Setyawati

Journal of Indonesian Tourism and Policy Studies

Indonesia as a maritime axis, of course, will not be separated from maritime culture and technology. The maritime axis is a development paradigm needed by maritime-based regions such as Labuan Bajo. Maritime culture should be the original culture of Indonesia, because Indonesia is an archipelagic country. However, the development of tourist villages located on the coast requires a special planning program that is in accordance with the characteristics of the community, geography, and socio-culture so that tourism development is sustainable. This study aims to create a digital-based and sustainable independent tourism village development program. The concept used is sustainable tourism, …

Southwest Pacific Tropical Cyclone Development Classification Utilizing Machine Learning And Synoptic Composites, Rupsa Bhowmick, Jill C. Trepanier, Alex M. Haberlie

Faculty Publications

This study evaluates the ability of machine learning algorithms to classify tropical depressions (TDs) and tropical storms (TSs) in the western region of the southwest Pacific Ocean (SWPO). Decision rules are generated to predict the environment required for a depression to fully develop into a mature storm, and the most influential predictors in the classification decision are ranked. TD and TS are discriminated based on a maximum sustained wind speed threshold (≥17 ms−1). Various aerosol, thermodynamic, and dynamic parameters are extracted closest to the initiation point of each non-developing and developing sample. The covariates associated with each labelled sample are …

Ethnographic Insight On The Construct Of Blackness: Heritage, ‘Home,’ Community, And Reality In Carver City-Lincoln Gardens, Tampa, Florida, 1928-2021, Lisa Katina Armstrong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study is a community-engaged investigation of the experiences and impacts of Black people living in the segregated space called “Carver City-Lincoln Gardens.” This study aims to advance scholarly and mainstream conversations about one racialized community; it is a significant space because the Lincoln Gardens Area was explicitly designated by the Department of Defense as a residential space for Black veterans after World War II to purchase homes. By exploring this housing arrangement through an anthropological lens, the findings indicate that a mixed-method, collaborative ethnography reveals nuances that might be glossed over when communities are racialized. This study also seeks …

An Assessment Of Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Individuals Gender Affirming Health Care Practices In The Greater Tampa Bay, Sara J. Berumen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The LGBTQ+ community faces discrimination and oppression throughout U.S. history and today. In particular, transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals may face a variety of challenges when seeking biomedical health care tied to hostility, discomfort, lack of training, stigma, and denial of care at clinics or hospitals (Baker & Beagan, 2014; Lykens et al., 2018; Safer, 2021). TGNC individuals face medical gatekeeping when trying to access medical gender-affirming care (Aizura, 2018; Malatino, 2020). The research project aims to investigate these individuals' healthcare experiences, and access to both medicalized and nonmedicalized gender affirming health care practices.

In order to conduct this …

Impacts Of Development Induced Displacement On The Tribal Communities Of India: An Integrative Review, Dandub Palzor Negi, E. P. Abdul Azeez

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Development-induced displacement (DID) has been a contentious issue linked to development today. Thousands of people, particularly tribal and other marginalized communities in India, are being uprooted from their land every year in the name of development. The available evidence-based suggests that DID brings a myriad of implications to the lives of the displaced. However, it is unclear what domains DID impacts and marginalizes tribal communities. Therefore, this review aims to analyze the impacts of DID on the lives of tribal communities in India. Synthesizing evidence on the impact of DID deserves high policy and research attention. An integrative review of …

Young Chinese Share Their Parents’ Views On The Decision Of Embarking On Working Holidays In New Zealand, Hongrui Zhu

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Working holidays have become increasingly popular for young Chinese to gain overseas work and travel experience. Against this background, this research aims to explore the attitudes and perspectives of Chinese parents towards the decision of their children to embark on working holidays in New Zealand and how culture affects these attitudes and perspectives. Through face-to-face interviews, this research recruited 30 Chinese WHMs in New Zealand. Three themes have been developed from analyzing the interview transcripts to uncover the views of their parents, namely, Chinese parents being supportive, Chinese parents urging children to settle down, and Chinese parents not wanting children …

“800 Years We Have Been Down”: Rebel Songs And The Retrospective Reach Of The Irish Republican Narrative, Seán Ó Cadhla Jun 2022

“800 Years We Have Been Down”: Rebel Songs And The Retrospective Reach Of The Irish Republican Narrative, Seán Ó Cadhla

Articles

From the glamorous, cross-dressing “Rebel, Rebel” of David Bowie, to the righteous Trenchtown “Soul Rebel” of Bob Marley and The Wailers, both varied and various musical articulations of cultural and socio-political rebellion have long enjoyed a ubiquitous presence across multiple soundscapes. As a musicological delineator in Ireland, however, ‘rebel’ conveys a specifically political dynamic due to its consistent deployment as an all-encompassing descriptor for songs detailing events and personalities from the Irish national struggle. This paper sets out to examine the specific musical delineator of “rebel song” from both musicological and politico-ideological perspectives with a view to interrogating its appropriateness …

Expanding The Frontiers Of Humnitarian Law: The International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda, Paul J. Magnarella Jun 2022

Expanding The Frontiers Of Humnitarian Law: The International Criminal Tribunal For Rwanda, Paul J. Magnarella

Florida Journal of International Law

In 1994, Rwanda erupted into one of the most appalling cases of genocide that the world has witnessed since World War II. The United Nations (UN) Security Council, having recently created an international criminal tribunal for humanitarian law violators in the European States of the former Yugoslavia, decided it could do no less for African Rwanda. Since the Rwandan conflict was internal rather than international, the statute for its tribunal complements rather than replicates that of its Yugoslavian counterpart. Because the statute for the International Criminal Rwandan Tribunal (ICTR) contains a number of legal innovations, it will contribute significantly to …

With increased use of educational technology in second language acquisition, idiomatic language instruction has seen an increase in the use of educational technology as an instructional method. Second/foreign language (L2) idioms teaching methods have extended their pedagogical approaches to employ Computer Assisted language Learning (CALL) and/or Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) educational technologies such as games, online platforms, images, videos, movies, social media, and augmented reality. Recent Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research has begun to focus on the effect(s) different types of videos (YouTube, advertisements, TV shows, full movies, and movie clips) can have on learning a second language, English …

Ghost (Hi)Stories: Fiction As Alternative History In Brodber, Valdés, Cisneros, And Condé, Kristina Suzette Gibby Jun 2022

Ghost (Hi)Stories: Fiction As Alternative History In Brodber, Valdés, Cisneros, And Condé, Kristina Suzette Gibby

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the role that female ghosts play in recuperating memory and filling the gaps of official history in the following four contemporary novels: Erna Brodber’s Louisiana (1994), Zoé Valdés’s Te di la vida entera (1996), Sandra Cisneros’s Caramelo: or, Puro Cuento (2002), and Maryse Condé’s Victoire, les saveurs et les mots: récit (2006). The ghosts in these novels disrupt a linear temporality and present a matriarchal mode of remembering, leading readers to reconsider the past outside of the dominant historical discourse. In this way, the novels become alternative histories that oppose the monologic historical paradigm and recuperate marginalized …

Language And Social Justice In Us Climate Movements: Barriers And Ways Forward, Julia Coombs Fine Jun 2022

Language And Social Justice In Us Climate Movements: Barriers And Ways Forward, Julia Coombs Fine

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Climate movements increasingly conceptualize the climate crisis as an issue of social injustice, both in terms of its root causes and its present and future effects. Climate justice calls for participatory decision-making within climate movements, which, as communication scholars have pointed out, necessitates inclusive and accessible communicative practices. Within sociocultural linguistics, a growing body of research has explored sociolinguistic justice, or marginalized groups' struggle for self-determined language use. This analysis interweaves these two research areas, applying the theory of sociolinguistic justice to climate communication in organizing contexts. Drawing on 67 semi-structured interviews and 112 online surveys with climate activists from …
