Cups As A Record Of Humans: Material Culture Effects On Social Communication, Bethany N. Lamb Jul 2022

Cups As A Record Of Humans: Material Culture Effects On Social Communication, Bethany N. Lamb

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

Drinking vessels are a uniquely universal tool. They are used in all cultures, pertaining but not limited to ceremony, practice, practicality and custom. This thesis examines changes in ceramic cups and how this material culture reflects a collective record of human intention. My project emphasizes how the aesthetics of ceramic work is influenced by the social structures of the societies they are made into. When making pottery the ceramicist absorbs the style, history, social status, ergonomics, and intention of external stimuli that then become part of their own work. Observing pottery over time, physical changes depict a variety of human …

Translanguaging In Court Proceedings: How Interpreter Pedagogy Needs To Address Monolingual Ideologies In Court Interpreting That Delegitimize Litigants’ Voices, Alan James Runcieman Jul 2022

Translanguaging In Court Proceedings: How Interpreter Pedagogy Needs To Address Monolingual Ideologies In Court Interpreting That Delegitimize Litigants’ Voices, Alan James Runcieman

International Journal of Interpreter Education

The majority of court proceedings are based on monolingual ideologies that assume that the court is speaking one, specific, bounded language and the litigant another. Thus, interpreting processes in this context are framed as an L-B to L-A interchange, a bridge between two linguistically and culturally discrete entities. In increasingly superdiverse societies, however, court interpreters are finding that their clients do not always respect these rigid boundaries, often engaging instead in what has become to be known as translanguaging, a form of linguistically fluid, hybrid, and often creative discourse that sources all the client’s (para)linguistic repertoires, acquired throughout their personal …

Cross-Infections Of Vegetal-Human Bodies In Science Fiction, Heather I. Sullivan Jul 2022

Cross-Infections Of Vegetal-Human Bodies In Science Fiction, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

It is particularly disturbing when seemingly inert plants escape the category of nourishing food and instead become transmitters of vegetal diseases infecting our human bodies or transforming us into plant-human hybrids or even plant-infused zombies. This article analyzes the ecological and alimentary implications of three sf texts in which plants infect human bodies or use them as a kind of walking soil from which to sprout: Paolo Bacigalupi's novel The Windup Girl (2009), Olivia Vieweg's German-language graphic novel, EndZeit [EndTime, 2018], and Nnedi Okorafor's graphic novel LaGuardia (2019). Presenting plant-human relations as either utopian and kinship-based or as horrific cross-species …

The Political Urgency Of Black Manhood: Frederick Douglass On Constitutional Theory, John M. Kang Jul 2022

The Political Urgency Of Black Manhood: Frederick Douglass On Constitutional Theory, John M. Kang

Faculty Scholarship

How did Frederick Douglass—one who was born a slave, one who had been denied all formal education, one who had been sundered from his family, one who had been starved, tortured, and, on occasion, nearly killed—manage to muster the courage to do something as bold as challenge the United States Supreme Court? This Article suggests that Douglass, in order to assert his right as an American citizen, first had to assert his right as a man in an explicitly gendered sense. That is, Douglass had to muster a powerful sense of manliness that could elevate him psychologically to assert his …

Nature, Data, And Power: How Hegemonies Shaped This Special Section, A. Kamath, B. Velocci, A. Wesner, N. Chen, Vincent A. Formica, B. Subramaniam, M. Rebolleda-Gómez Jul 2022

Nature, Data, And Power: How Hegemonies Shaped This Special Section, A. Kamath, B. Velocci, A. Wesner, N. Chen, Vincent A. Formica, B. Subramaniam, M. Rebolleda-Gómez

Biology Faculty Works

Systems of oppression—racism, colonialism, misogyny, cissexism, ableism, heteronormativity, and more—have long shaped the content and practice of science. But opportunities to reckon with these influences are rarely found within academic science, even though such critiques are well developed in the social sciences and humanities. In this special section, we attempt to bring cross-disciplinary conversations among ecology, evolution, behavior, and genetics on the one hand and critical perspectives from the social sciences and humanities on the other into the pages—and in front of the readers—of a scientific journal. In this introduction to the special section, we recount and reflect on the …

An Exploration Of The Role Of Vulnerability In Ministerial Leadership: A Qualitative Examination Of John 13 As Lived Experience In Contemporary Ministry, Lance L. May Jul 2022

An Exploration Of The Role Of Vulnerability In Ministerial Leadership: A Qualitative Examination Of John 13 As Lived Experience In Contemporary Ministry, Lance L. May

PhD in Organizational Leadership

When leaders experience personal failures, it often causes negative repercussions across an entire organization, and Burns (1978) noted that devastating leadership failures had become increasingly common at the close of the 20th century. Leadership failures have continued to be a prominent problem, and the failures of ministry leaders are just as prevalent and devastating (Shaw, 2006). Brown (2015) concluded that vulnerability is a powerful tool for maintaining trust and integrity for leaders, followers, and entire organizational cultures. This study centered on both the role of vulnerability exemplified by Jesus in John 13 and the lived experiences of Christian ministry leaders. …

Odontometric Sex Estimation Using A Modern Forensic Skeletal Collection, Andrea Sbei Jul 2022

Odontometric Sex Estimation Using A Modern Forensic Skeletal Collection, Andrea Sbei

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Forensic anthropologists are responsible for estimating the biological profile—the age, sex, population affinity, and stature—of unknown deceased individuals. Many methods used for estimating the biological profile are sex-specific, which implicates sex estimation as one of the most important components of the biological profile. Historically, the skull and postcranial elements have been heavily utilized for morphological and metric sex estimation methods, whereas odontometric methods have been overlooked and underutilized. Odontometric data has proven to be a worthwhile avenue for the estimation of sex in several population-based studies (Acharya et al., 2011; Adams & Pilloud, 2019; Angadi et al., 2013; Cardoso, 2008; …

The Watts Gang Treaty: Hidden History And The Power Of Social Movements, William J. Aceves Jul 2022

The Watts Gang Treaty: Hidden History And The Power Of Social Movements, William J. Aceves

Faculty Scholarship

On the eve of the 1992 Los Angeles uprising, a small group of gang leaders and community activists drafted an agreement to curtail violence in south Los Angeles. Several gangs in Watts accepted the truce and established a cease-fire agreement. By most accounts, the 1992 Watts Gang Treaty succeeded in reducing gang violence in Los Angeles. Local activists attributed the reduction in shootings to the Treaty. Even law enforcement officials grudgingly recognized the Treaty’s contribution to reducing gang violence and a corresponding decrease in homicides.

The origins of the Watts Gang Treaty can be traced to gang leaders recognizing that …

“The Worst Part About My Pregnancy Was Stuff That Didn’T Have To Do With My Pregnancy”: Medicaid Beneficiaries’ Pregnancy Intentions & Experiences In South Carolina, Andrew Michael Chen Jul 2022

“The Worst Part About My Pregnancy Was Stuff That Didn’T Have To Do With My Pregnancy”: Medicaid Beneficiaries’ Pregnancy Intentions & Experiences In South Carolina, Andrew Michael Chen

Senior Theses

Low-income women and women of color experience adverse birth outcomes at disproportionately higher rates in the United States than most people who give birth. This thesis examines individual interviews conducted with 30 low-income women whose most recent birth was covered by Medicaid, the United States’ largest means-tested public health insurance program. The aim of this thesis is to examine how the women in the study thought about pregnancy, and how they described their intentions to become or avoid becoming pregnant at various times in their life. While public health researchers often frame pregnancy as an event that is either intended …

The Patent Medium: Toward A Network Paradigm Of The Patent System, Or Cohen Sasson Jul 2022

The Patent Medium: Toward A Network Paradigm Of The Patent System, Or Cohen Sasson

Articles

The modern patent system is conceived of as an information platform; it is evident in the common description of the patent system as a quid-pro-quo bargain: Society grants exclusive rights in exchange for information published by a patentee. But is there more to the patent system than merely informing others? Does the patent system also serve as a communication (and not only information) platform, namely, as a medium? Based on an interdisciplinary analysis of the patent system's structure and features through the lenses of communication studies, this Article suggests that it does. It demonstrates how the patent system as a …

An Exploration Of Lgbtq+ Patients' Needs: A Case Study Among Nursing Students, Rachel Wolfe, Kerensa Allison (Mentor)

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

When lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals seek basic care and information, research suggests nurses are often uncomfortable and ill-equipped to address their unique issues and concerns, presenting a barrier for patients to access good healthcare. To address this, a focus group was conducted among undergraduate nursing students to identify knowledge and perspectives on LGBTQ+ healthcare and to provide training on the intersections of gender identity and health, stemming from Participatory Action Research methods. Overall, students were receptive and willing to engage in the conversation about the intersections between gender identity and health. By taking a more facilitative …

Crafting A Family, Leah Bella Zinder Jul 2022

Crafting A Family, Leah Bella Zinder

Theses - ALL

In this paper I uncover a set of conflicting desires within me. As I long for a family and community I am torn between accepted patience and frustrated impatience. I create objects for my descendants using historical craft techniques to connect to craftspeople of the past while reaching to future generations. I dream of the family who will one day join me at my table to use these objects, and for now, I begin my traditions proudly on my own.

In Search Of The Pelasgians: Discursive Strategies And Greek Identities From The Archaic Period To The Roman Imperial Era, Tristn Lambright Jul 2022

In Search Of The Pelasgians: Discursive Strategies And Greek Identities From The Archaic Period To The Roman Imperial Era, Tristn Lambright

Theses

In ancient literature, the Pelasgians appear as an ambiguously defined and geographically ubiquitous primeval ethnic group or tribe. Various classical writers describe the Pelasgians as simultaneously pre-Hellenic and non-Hellenic –– ancestral and barbarian, chronologically earlier and essentially different. The ongoing ideological and rhetorical negotiations of Pelasgian identity in ancient literature played a critical role in discussions of Greekness –– discussions rooted in the distant past, informed by fluid and contradictory myths, and shaped by intellectual, social, and political transformations of the period. By contextualizing these discussions, this study attempts not simply a reconstruction of the mythological Pelasgians, but a reconstruction …

Studying (and teaching) such a vast and diverse continent can be challenging. Because no introductory course can claim to be fully comprehensive, this one will explore several themes in the history of Africa and its peoples that the professor finds important and noteworthy. The readings, lectures, films, and activities will consider broad regions of the continent, and the goals of this course include both knowledge and enjoyment. You should come away from this class with a new appreciation for Africa and a general idea of its history from 1500 to the present.

We examine three distinctive biostratigraphic signatures of humans associated with hunting and gathering, landscape domestication and globalization. All three signatures have significant fossil records of regional importance that can be correlated inter-regionally and help describe the developing pattern of human expansion and appropriation of resources. While none have individual first or last appearances that provide a globally isochronous marker, all three signatures overlap stratigraphically, in that they are part of a continuum of change, with complex regional patterns. Here we show that during the later stages of globalization, late nineteenth to twentieth century records of species translocations can be used …
