Trauma Exposure And Trauma Symptoms As Predictors Of Police Perceptions In Latinx Youths, Amanda Venta, German Cadenas, Alfonso Mercado, Luz M. Garcini, Melanie M. Domenech Rodriguez

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Objective: The Latinx immigrant youth population composes nearly a quarter of all children in the U.S. and are a high-risk group for police encounters. Based on perceptions of Latinxs as criminals, increased enforcement actions against Latinxs in the U.S., and failures of policing and police brutality in immigrants’ home countries, we expected that immigrants who reported increased trauma exposure and symptoms would have more negative perceptions of police.

Method: This study utilized data from 107 recently immigrated Latinx youth to examine how trauma exposure (Child Trauma Screen) and symptoms (Child PTSD Symptoms Scale) related to perceptions of police (Criminal Sentiments …

Gis Automated Delineation And Analysis Of Cancer Service Areas In The United States, Changzhen Wang Jul 2022

Gis Automated Delineation And Analysis Of Cancer Service Areas In The United States, Changzhen Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Delineating a meaningful and reliable geographic unit pertaining to cancer care is essential in examining geographic variations in cancer care for better analysis, management, and planning. Public health researchers have devoted great efforts to defining various service areas, which; however, lack scientific rigor or are unrepresentative of the highly specialized cancer care markets, and their methods have become obsolete in the era of big data and high geo-computation. This study develops the “Spatially Constrained Leiden (ScLeiden)” method, a network community detection algorithm in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and applies it to delineate a series of coherent cancer service …

Bhinneka Tunggal Ika: Indonesia Circumscribed Norm Multiculturalism, Priskila Shendy Hartanti, Dwi Ardhana Jul 2022

Bhinneka Tunggal Ika: Indonesia Circumscribed Norm Multiculturalism, Priskila Shendy Hartanti, Dwi Ardhana

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

Norm of Multiculturalism deals with the acceptance and accommodation of differences in society. In the West, it is an approach that guarantees equal rights among white settlers, indigenous people, and the immigrants. It provides the idea that everyone can live together in harmony despite differences in their cultural background. Asian countries have different narratives of multiculturalism as – most of them - were built upon heterogeneity, hence they were accustomed to living in diversity. By utilising qualitative research method, this paper presents a new conception of ‘circumscribed multiculturalism’ based on the practice of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika in Indonesia. Bhinneka Tunggal …

Development Of The Cooperative Adoption Factors Instrument To Measure Factors Associated With Instructional Practice In The Context Of Institutional Change, John P. Ziker, Brittnee Earl, Karl Mertens, Susan E. Shadle

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Many institutional and departmentally focused change efforts have sought to improve teaching in STEM through the promotion of evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs). Even with these efforts, EBIPs have not become the predominant mode of teaching in many STEM departments. To better understand institutional change efforts and the barriers to EBIP implementation, we developed the Cooperative Adoption Factors Instrument (CAFI) to probe faculty member characteristics beyond demographic attributes at the individual level. The CAFI probes multiple constructs related to institutional change including perceptions of the degree of mutual advantage of taking an action (strategic complements), trust and interconnectedness among colleagues …

Myth, Fiction And Politics In The Age Of Antiheroes: A Case Study Of Donald Trump, Igor Prusa, Matthew Brummer Jul 2022

Myth, Fiction And Politics In The Age Of Antiheroes: A Case Study Of Donald Trump, Igor Prusa, Matthew Brummer

Heroism Science

In this article, we demonstrate that the antihero archetype informs our understanding of Trump in important ways, including his rise to and fall from power. We introduce an analytical framework for analyzing Trump’s antiheroic traits based on his social positioning, individual motivation, and personal charisma. We argue that Trump is fascinating because he is powerful, amoral, and charismatic, and suggest that the American public was primed for Trumpism through a zeitgeist hospitable to antihero worship. That is, Trump’s dogged popularity with nearly half of the American public was foretold by decades of pop-cultural obsession with, and adulation for, the antihero.

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Evidence-informed decision-making is in increasing demand given growing pressures on marine environments. A way to facilitate this is by knowledge exchange among marine scientists and decision-makers. While many barriers are reported in the literature, there are also examples whereby research has successfully informed marine decision-making (i.e., ‘bright-spots’). Here, we identify and analyze 25 bright-spots from a wide range of marine fields, contexts, and locations to provide insights into how to improve knowledge exchange at the interface of marine science and policy. Through qualitative surveys we investigate what initiated the bright-spots, their goals, and approaches to knowledge exchange. We also seek …

Digital Contact Tracing And Privacy, Mahdi Nasereddin, Edward J. Glantz, Galen A. Grimes, Joanne Peca, Michelle Gordon, Mike Bartolacci

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Digital contact tracing tools were developed to decrease the spread of COVID-19 by supplementing traditional manual methods. Although these tools have great potential, they were developed rather quickly resulting in tools with varying levels of success. The main issues with these tools are over privacy and who might have access to the information gathered. In general, their effectiveness varied globally, where users expressed privacy concerns associated with sharing identity, illness, and location information. This paper reviews these issues in deployments across Asia, Europe, and the United States. The goal is to begin a discussion that improves the design and development …

Assessing The Effects Of Elevation On The Peaks Of Otter Salamander (Plethodon Hubrichti) Using Body Condition Index, Norman Reichenbach, Timothy R. Brophy, Hannah Suber, Elisabeth Russell, Hannah Kinsley, Liam Cusack, Cetia Dawson, Savannah Dunn, Olivia De Araujo

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Peaks of Otter Salamander (Plethodon hubrichti; POS) is a montane species found at elevations above 442 m within a 117 km2 area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia. In allopatric areas (areas without the Eastern Red-backed Salamander, P. cinereus, a known competitor), POS body condition was hypothesized to decline both above and below some optimal elevation. Decreased condition at lower elevations would most likely be due to increased temperatures and lower relative humidities, which may adversely affect the ability of salamanders to forage effectively on vegetation due to desiccation risk. Decreased condition at elevations above …

A Tale Of Two Art Programs: Art & Identity For People With Disabilities, Melinda Leigh Maconi Jul 2022

A Tale Of Two Art Programs: Art & Identity For People With Disabilities, Melinda Leigh Maconi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the relationship between disability and art in individual and organizational narratives told in the context of art programs that are designed to provide meaningful and inclusive experiences for people with disabilities outside of “art therapy.” Findings of narrative and thematic analysis of the websites of two non-profit disability centered arts education organizations, autobiographical sketches of disabled artists, and in-depth family history interviews with parents of people with disabilities suggest that the clear cut boxes created by scholarly and social movements narratives of disability do not map neatly onto the lived experiences of people with disabilities, their families, …

Care And Migration: A Reflexive Account Of A Researcher With A Migration Background, Menal Ahmad Jul 2022

Care And Migration: A Reflexive Account Of A Researcher With A Migration Background, Menal Ahmad

The Qualitative Report

The importance of a researcher’s positionality has been well documented in prior studies. Yet, reflections on cross-cultural research from the positionality of a researcher with a migration background are rare. In this paper, I respond to this knowledge gap through a reflexive account of my positionality as a researcher with a migration background who has conducted cross-cultural research concerning dementia care. Following critiques of “ethnic matching,” I apply a reflexive approach in which researcher positionality is understood as intersectional. I illustrate how both commonalities and differences within the researcher-researched relationship impact rapport-building and power dynamics. Also, I highlight how a …

Creating A Shared Musical Interpretation: Changes In Coordination Dynamics While Learning Unfamiliar Music Together, Emily A. Wood, Andrew Chang, Dan Bosnyak, Lucas Klein, Elger Baraku, Dobromir Dotov, Laurel Trainor

Journal Articles

The ability to coordinate with others is fundamental for humans to achieve shared goals. Often, harmonious interpersonal coordination requires learning, such as ensemble musicians rehearing together to synchronize their low-level timing and high-level aesthetic musical expressions. We investigated how the coordination dynamics of a professional string quartet changed as they learned unfamiliar pieces together across eight trials. During all trials, we recorded each musician's body sway motion data, and quantified the group's body sway similarity (cross-correlation) and information flow (Granger causality) on each trial. In line with our hypothesis, group similarity increased, while group information flow decreased significantly across trials. …

"The Greatest Dissemblers In The World": Timucuas, Spaniards, And The Fall Of Fort Caroline, Christophe J.M. Boucher

Florida Historical Quarterly

At dawn, September 20, 1565, four hundred Spanish soldiers under the command of the Adelantado (military governor) Pedro Menendez de Aviles launched a surprise attack on Fort Caroline, a French outpost located in the lower reaches of what is today the St. Johns River in northern Florida. The assault could not have come at a worse time for the fort's residents. Ten days earlier, most of the fighting men in the settlement had sailed south to St. Augustine with Jean Ribault to launch a preemptive strike against Menendez, who had just landed in the area. What could have been a …

When The Lion Learns To Write: A Counterstory About A Doctoral Student's Qualitative Research Project, Martín Alberto Gonzalez

Chicano/Latino Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay utilizes critical race theory composite counterstorytelling to tell a story about Alberto, a first-generation Xicano doctoral student who is presenting his dissertation research proposal to his qualitative research class. Through Alberto’s character, I discuss my complicated process of designing and conducting a research study. Specifically, I reflect on why I decided to study the experiences of Mexican, Mexican American, and Xicanx students in higher education, why I used critical race theory, Latinx/a/o critical race theory, and critical race spatial analysis as theoretical frameworks, why I utilized critical collaborative ethnography as my research approach, and why I chose counterstorytelling …

Local And State Climate Initiatives In Louisiana Since 2005: Content And Thematic Analyses, Jessie F. Parrott Jul 2022

Local And State Climate Initiatives In Louisiana Since 2005: Content And Thematic Analyses, Jessie F. Parrott

LSU Master's Theses

Louisiana is uniquely exposed to severe weather because of its geography and climate. Louisiana’s extreme weather is exacerbated by anthropogenic climate change, which will worsen in the future. The risks its population and environment are exposed to has generated several policies and planning documents, nine of which are analyzed in this thesis. Three plans are from the state level, three are from the parish level, and three are from the urban (New Orleans) level. These planning documents pose various adaptation and mitigation actions to ameliorate and address multiple climate issues. These actions utilize specific mitigation strategies. The content and thematic …

Reference Database Of Teeth Images From The Family Bovidae, Juliet K. Brophy, Gregory J. Matthews

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Researchers typically rely on fossils from the Family Bovidae to generate African paleoenvironmental reconstructions due to their strict ecological tendencies. Bovids have dominated the southern African fauna for the past four million years and, therefore, dominate the fossil faunal assemblages, especially isolated teeth. Traditionally, researchers reference modern and fossil comparative collections to identify teeth. However, researchers are limited by the specific type and number of bovids at each institution. B.O.V.I.D. (Bovidae Occlusal Visual IDentification) is a repository of images of the occlusal surface of bovid teeth. The dataset currently includes extant bovids from 7 tribes and 20 species (~3900). B.O.V.I.D. …

Metaphor For A Post-White Horizon, Dwayne K. Wright, Tyler Derreth Jul 2022

Metaphor For A Post-White Horizon, Dwayne K. Wright, Tyler Derreth

Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"

This project is a counternarrative, in the tradition of Richard Delgado’s The Rodrigo Chronicles, using critical race theory’s storytelling methodology. We present a discussion between a Black scholar and white scholar sharing their experiences as they explore the relationship between Blackness/whiteness and anti-Blackness/white supremacy. The crux of this counternarrative lies in the intersection between the hopelessness one Black scholar feels toward racial progress in America and the desperation of a white scholar as they process the possibilities for a post-white ontological future within the Western academy in the wake of the January 6th Insurrection. The counter-story integrates Afropessimistic thought with …

“What Do You Suggest That I Do Next?”: The Rival Geographies Of Ellen Irene Diggs, Constance Holden Jul 2022

“What Do You Suggest That I Do Next?”: The Rival Geographies Of Ellen Irene Diggs, Constance Holden

Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"

This biographical essay tells the story of Dr. Ellen Irene Diggs (1906–1998), a Black woman anthropologist who specialized in African diasporic cultural and historical studies. Best known for her work with the heralded scholar W. E. B. Du Bois, Dr. Diggs was a writer, traveler, and educator who imagined an inclusive, expansive, and representative historical canon that captured the breadth and depth of Black politics and cultures. This essay argues that in so doing, Dr. Diggs charted a “rival geography” that challenged the dominant narratives of the academy. Building on the work of Stephanie Camp in her examination of rival …

Stoneware And Earthenware From The Beeswax Wreck: Classification Of The Dubé Collection And Discussion Of The Interpretation Of The Materials In Protohistoric Sites, Vanessa Renee Litzenberg Jul 2022

Stoneware And Earthenware From The Beeswax Wreck: Classification Of The Dubé Collection And Discussion Of The Interpretation Of The Materials In Protohistoric Sites, Vanessa Renee Litzenberg

Dissertations and Theses

Over the past three centuries, items from the Beeswax Wreck have been discovered on Oregon's northern coastline near Manzanita, including stoneware and earthenware fragments. While the stoneware and earthenware were not noticed by beachcombers washing ashore until more recently, similar artifacts have been noted within Indigenous sites for decades. While most of the analysis of the artifacts found in protohistoric settings are used to provide proof of a wreck or potentially a marker of the start of the contact period, this study aims to provide some context to the stoneware and earthenware sherds related to the wreck. The goal was …

Reconstituting A Pre-Neolithic Territory By Implementing Plant Functional Types: Application To The Roussillon Territory (France), Benoit Gaudou, Zenith Arnejo, Paul Bannwart, Flavien Loup-Hadamard

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The study of the impact of human activities on a non-humanly modified landscape is confronted with an essential need to define the initial state before farmers arrived. Particularly, vegetation cover (biomass but also vegetation type distribution) is hard to reconstitute once we postulate there is no such thing as climatic vegetation. Here we present the first steps of a reconstitution of a self-evolving vegetation cover of the French department of Pyrénées-Orientales (also, Roussillon) - an area cultivated since the 5th millennium B.C. To simulate the vegetation state at the neolithic period, we first classify the 94 tree and bush species …

Modelling Urban Growth And Future Urban Climate In Indian Cities With Local Climate Zones As Land Uses, Tomas Crols, Jente Broeckx, Inge Uljee, Shu Yang Jul 2022

Modelling Urban Growth And Future Urban Climate In Indian Cities With Local Climate Zones As Land Uses, Tomas Crols, Jente Broeckx, Inge Uljee, Shu Yang

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The urban heat island effect leads to higher temperatures in cities compared to rural areas. The combined effect of climate change and strong urban growth will as such have a massive impact on human health in growing large cities, especially in tropical or humid regions. Climate models usually do not take urban growth into account or do not have detailed data on the specific characteristics of the urban area. Most land-use change simulations are driven by functional land uses (e.g. residential land, commercial land, agriculture), while an urban climate model rather needs more information on climate-relevant surface properties such as …
