Many Healings Of The Woman With The Flow Of Blood, Ekaterina Lomperis Jan 2023

Many Healings Of The Woman With The Flow Of Blood, Ekaterina Lomperis

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

With the emergence of the modern quest for the historical Jesus, theologians began increasingly questioning traditional views of Jesus as a healer of human bodies. While a growing suspicion of Jesus’s role as a literal healer of the body is commonly traced to the influence of the Enlightenment, in this essay, I will suggest that the roots of this theological marginalization run deeper, in the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformations, when supernatural did not yet equal superstitious. The essay will examine two representative exegeses of the healing of the woman with the flow of blood in Mark 5:25–34, offered by Martin Luther …

Sandhill Crane Lead Poisonings Linked To A Wetland Restoration, Andrew J. Caven, Joshua D. Wiese Jan 2023

Sandhill Crane Lead Poisonings Linked To A Wetland Restoration, Andrew J. Caven, Joshua D. Wiese

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

Toward the end of the 2018 spring sandhill crane migration on the Platte River in Nebraska, we detected 7 dead cranes near a recently restored wetland within 200 m of the river’s main channel. Topographic recontouring of the soils had occurred in January of 2018 and the area was not yet revegetated. The area had formerly hosted an excavated pond where hunting occurred for many years prior to the 1991 ban on lead ammunition for waterfowl harvest. Two of the cranes with no physical signs of trauma were submitted for necropsy. The cause of death in both cases as lead …

Narratives Reflecting Theory Of Mind Among Bilingual Lyuli Children Of Uzbekistan, Hristo Kyuchukov, Jill De Villiers, Bahodir B. Mamurov, Gulbahor R. Akramova

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

This is the first known study of the socio-cognitive development of Lyuli children, a Roma-type group living in Bukhara in Uzbekistan. The research was conducted in schools in Bukhara serving both Lyuli children and Uzbek children, both of whom are multi-lingual but whose sociolinguistic circumstances are somewhat different. There has been less cross-cultural work on later stages of Theory of Mind development, in which children have to make inferences about the mental states of characters in a complex narrative. The research here shows that the children from both groups do remarkably well on these tasks, and their multilingualism is hypothesized …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Dogs have a special place in human history as the first domesticated species and play important roles in many cultures around the world. However, their role in scientific studies has been relatively recent. With a few notable exceptions (e.g., Darwin, Pavlov, Scott, and Fuller), domestic dogs were not commonly the subject of rigorous scientific investigation of behavior until the late 1990s. Although the number of canine science studies has increased dramatically over the last 20 years, most research groups are limited in the inferences they can draw because of the relatively small sample sizes used, along with the exceptional diversity …

Harlem's Superhero: Social Interaction, Heterogeneity Of Thought, And The Superhero Mission In Marvel's Luke Cage, Justin Martin Jan 2023

Harlem's Superhero: Social Interaction, Heterogeneity Of Thought, And The Superhero Mission In Marvel's Luke Cage, Justin Martin

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

The essay extends previous Luke Cage scholarship by analyzing him through a discipline rarely utilized in superhero scholarship: developmental psychology. Using the Luke Cage television series, the author centers Luke Cage's relationship to Harlem. In doing so, the author explores how the relationship can elucidate both the conceptual foundations of morally-relevant decision-making and the ways these concepts may be applied in varied and complex social interactions -- features of social life relevant to everyday persons as well as superheroes working within a fictionalized neighborhood.

Pico Y Espuelas: An Exploration Of The Cultural Practice Of Cockfighting In Puerto Rico Through A Decolonial Perspective, Rocio Del Mar Ramirez Castro Jan 2023

Pico Y Espuelas: An Exploration Of The Cultural Practice Of Cockfighting In Puerto Rico Through A Decolonial Perspective, Rocio Del Mar Ramirez Castro

Theses & ETDs

This ethnographic study explores the cultural significance of cockfighting in Puerto Rico. In 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on the practice. Through a series of in-person interviews conducted in Aguada, Puerto Rico in October 2022, I documented the impact of the ban on this ritual practice among those whose families and livelihoods have been intertwined with the industry for generations, many of whom consider it a part of their personal heritage. Based on fieldwork that included visiting galleras, or cockfighting rinks, and the homes of galleros, those who raise roosters, this thesis analyzes kinship structures and …

In The Luster Of Flame, The Vulture Disguises Himself As The Phoenix: Climate Induced Catastrophe Response, Rescue, & Relief, Kyla Baal

Theses & ETDs

On August 13th, 2004, Hurricane Charley made a direct impact on the south-west coast of Florida. A category 4 storm, Charley devastated the unprepared coastal communities in Charlotte County, Fla. Nearly 20 years later, when Hurricane Ian took a similar path, we witnessed a region still rendered vulnerable by damage inflicted almost two decades earlier, get nailed again. Yet, somehow these communities fared much better than they did in 2004. Thus, studying the decisions made in the wake of the 2004 storm in the response stage may help us understand how and why particular areas were impacted differently by the …

Scars On An Hourglass, Oceanna Krasny Jan 2023

Scars On An Hourglass, Oceanna Krasny

Theses & ETDs

This collection of experimental lyric poetry titled Scars on an Hourglass and its accompanying Artist’s Statement follow an unnamed female narrator in the aftermath of a fictionalized sexual assault. The structure takes the shape of an hourglass and foregrounds the seasons winter and spring. This collection, inspired by the process of travel, the creation of notebooks featuring collage art and handwritten excerpts, and my experiences within rape culture, is divided into two sections. “Winter,” with short experimental poems uses language to highlight harsh, blue-tinged imagery that conveys themes of identity, assault, and loss. “Spring” places emphasis on images of rebirth …

Nutrition Insecurity For People Experiencing Homelessness In Sarasota, Florida, Kaylee 'June' Snell

Theses & ETDs

New College of Florida is located near Newtown, one of the nine food deserts in Sarasota, Florida. Food aid is often tailored towards those in poverty with housing. People Experiencing Homelessness (PEH) have difficulties with their health which are exacerbated by barriers to nutritious food. Because of Newtown's proximity to New College, I wanted to analyze how easily food aid resources could be utilized for healthy food assistance. In particular, I wanted to see if the information available online was easy to navigate, what the requirements were to access these resources, what food was being served, how often it was …

The Shape Of Justice: Women’S Experiences Of Social And Reproductive Justice Activism In A Local Unitarian Universalist Community, Nat Kornblum

Theses & ETDs

This thesis aims to explore the role of Unitarian Universalist women in social justice initiatives. Through a series of unstructured interviews with three women who assist with social justice initiatives at the UU Church of Sarasota, I hope to describe the influence of the faith in women’s lives, specifically how it influences their understanding of themselves and of their communities. Drawing on feminist ethnographic methods, I also used participant observation, attending several services and workshops put forth by the church. This ethnography is a collection and synopsis of my observations, interviews, and experiences among the women of the Unitarian Universalists …

Water Distribution Networks In Indonesia: A Comparative Case Analysis, Brianna Weier Jan 2023

Water Distribution Networks In Indonesia: A Comparative Case Analysis, Brianna Weier

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the distribution of water as an invaluable resource in the context of two case studies taking place within Indonesia. I first lay fundamental understandings of the international community’s water and sanitation prerogatives which are expanded by Elinor Ostrom’s contributions to the understanding of how and why resources are managed. The core of this thesis describes the history of water networks in Jakarta and its neighboring foil of Bali. Jakarta’s colonial history offers insights into how centuries of resource mismanagement can create a dire and almost impossibly damaged resource management system. Alternatively, Bali’s fields of rice paddy irrigation, …

“You’Ll Go To Hell For What Your Dirty Mind Is Thinking”: Thought-Action Fusion Within Obsessive Compulsive Disorder And Christian Religiosity, Vanessa O'Brien Jan 2023

“You’Ll Go To Hell For What Your Dirty Mind Is Thinking”: Thought-Action Fusion Within Obsessive Compulsive Disorder And Christian Religiosity, Vanessa O'Brien

Theses & ETDs

Thought-action fusion, specifically moral thought-action fusion, is a cognitive distortion identified within the literature on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) that involves the evaluation of immoral, obsessional thoughts as equivalent to immoral actions. This construct, along with obsessive compulsive cognition, generally, has been evidenced to be related to Christian religiosity, as certain Christian precepts emphasize moral purity of thought. As OCD symptomatology has also been associated with depression, the current study sought to investigate how religious individuals might differ from those with OCD when it comes to thought-action fusion, and how these groups might be differently affected by this distortion when …

How Practices Drive Persistence: The Transformational Consumption Journey Of Native Americans In Higher Education, Gwen Locklear Almodovar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In an academic environment where many higher education institutions tout their diversity and inclusion statistics, there is a decline in the enrollment of Native American students and a decrease in Native American scholars. The President of the United States, in an October 2021 briefing and with the issuance of an executive order named The White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Native Americans and Strengthening Tribal Colleges and Universities, saw the immediate urgency to understand the systematic causes and implement evidence-based strategies that will improve and increase student enrollment and academic advancement. This research takes …

History’S Pathologists: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, John Lukacs And The Dying Of The West, Michael A. Flannery Jan 2023

History’S Pathologists: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, John Lukacs And The Dying Of The West, Michael A. Flannery

Libraries Professional Work

This essay explores the perceived weakening and even possible collapse of Western Civilization as seen through the eyes of three prominent historians: Oswald Spengler, Jacques Barzun, and John Lukacs. Each of them has provoked controversy due to their pathologies of the West and their conclusion that its vital signs (identified as religion, science, and education), suggest a sick and possibly dying patient. All three developed metahistories that led, in Dermot Quinn’s words, to “that architecture of greater meaning by which historical facts make themselves intelligible.” That is to say, beyond their specific historical narratives, each made use of a wider …

Nuevo Acercamiento A La Iconografía De Los Vasos Con Perfiles De Animales Fantásticos, Patricia Ochoa Castillo

Segundo congreso internacional de iconografía precolombina. Barcelona, 2023. Actas.

Profiles of a fantastic animal, or supernatural being, …

Hombres, Pumas Y Jaguares: Imágenes Del Poder Chamánico En Los Vasos Líticos Del Noroeste Argentino, María Alba Bovisio

Segundo congreso internacional de iconografía precolombina. Barcelona, 2023. Actas.

The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck Jan 2023

The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck

Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology

What social forces shape the trajectory of novel, moralized forms of finance such as social finance, green finance, or Islamic banking and finance? More broadly, how do agents mobilize arguments and organize each other to create any form of financial innovation? This article addresses both questions by contributing an ethnography of a novel financial innovation pseudonymously named Sukuk Illumination, an internationally traded moral alternative to a corporate bond. This article’s findings both elaborate and subsume existing functionalist and critical explanations of financial innovation. The central argument is that we can better understand what causes financial innovation and the trajectory that …

Culturally Responsive Evaluation Methods In Philanthropy: Striving For Community Inclusion Amidst Power Hoarding Practices, Cristina Elena-Tangonan Whyte Jan 2023

Culturally Responsive Evaluation Methods In Philanthropy: Striving For Community Inclusion Amidst Power Hoarding Practices, Cristina Elena-Tangonan Whyte

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The importance of culture in the field of evaluation can be observed through the advancements that culturally responsive evaluation (CRE) and culturally responsive equitable evaluation (CREE) scholars have made in this arena over the past few decades. The literature, however, still lacks close examination of how CRE approaches are applied in institutions where cultural bias exists, such as philanthropy. Few researchers have examined the biases present in partnering with funders, white dominant norms, and the extent to which these elements facilitate or inhibit community inclusion in CRE. To address this gap, the present study utilized an exploratory sequential mixed methods …

Playing With Power: An Autoethnographic Study Of "The Last Of Us" As A Black Gamer, Adrienne Domasin Jan 2023

Playing With Power: An Autoethnographic Study Of "The Last Of Us" As A Black Gamer, Adrienne Domasin

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This research project concerns the types of meaning making that video game players and audiences can derive as active participants in the realm of digital media culture. This dissertation argues that embodied play as viewers and audiences has the potential to relieve the alienation caused by capitalism and its desire to strip individuals of their humanity through reification. This study contributes to academic studies of fandom by prioritizing my dissertation as an unapologetic expression of my fandom and the source of knowledge production that drives my research through a critical autoethnographic lens. As an acafan, I analyze my ludic experiences …

Epistemology And Authority In Two Latter-Day Saint Qanon Conspiracy Theorists, Indra Jean Louise Chapman Jan 2023

Epistemology And Authority In Two Latter-Day Saint Qanon Conspiracy Theorists, Indra Jean Louise Chapman

CGU Theses & Dissertations

QAnon and other far-right conspiracies are significant fixtures within contemporary American culture. Through a series of interviews with two highly engaged QAnon conspiracy theorists who are also members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I analyzed QAnon as an epistemic formation characterized by critique of social conditions, modern standards of rigor in research, and a highly accelerated online information economy. Framing my subjects’ participation in QAnon culture alongside their Latter-day Saint identity allowed for further investigation into dynamics of competing epistemic authority and the role of Mormon identity in shaping conspiracy theory. Finally, I compare the epistemology …
