#Choosetochallenge: Covid-19, Community Research, And The Canaanite Woman, Ma. Marilou S. Ibita, Maricel S. Ibita

Theology Department Faculty Publications

This study theologises on the Urban Poor Women and Children with Academics for Reaching and Delivering on UNSDGs in the Philippines (UPWARD-UP) Project research team’s collaboration with the Alliance of Peoples’ Organisation Along the Manggahan Floodway (Alliance), Philippines. We posit that the theological process of see-judge-act, enhanced with evaluate-celebrate/ritualise, using feminist biblical characterisation in interpreting Matthew 15:21-28, serves as a spiritual resource for Christians working for the urban poor realisation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. The Canaanite woman challenged Jesus’ identity and mission impacting on Christology and ecclesiology. This characterisation makes her …

Developing A Racial Justice Framework For U.S. Private Philanthropy, Mayara Aguiar Rosa Jan 2023

Developing A Racial Justice Framework For U.S. Private Philanthropy, Mayara Aguiar Rosa

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The international development sector has been experiencing an awakening regarding the impacts of colonialism in the field. Calls for anti-colonial practices, cultural competency, and enhanced attention to imbalanced power dynamics have become increasingly prevalent, but despite this shift, the field still shows resistance to explore and intentionally address the role of race. In this project, I investigate how race has shaped development and explore its impacts on the design of development interventions, organizational structuring, and funding allocation. The work proposes alternatives that envisions to consider a racial lens to shift power and tackle inequalities and aims that development programs of …

This study examined the unique challenges and opportunities associated with ensuring food security in urban areas. The study reviewed empirical literature and relevant reports in the last five years (2018-2023). This study identified several challenges in ensuring food security in urban regions, across the world, including rising food prices, limited water and …

The Pricelessness Of Life Vs. Profiting From Illness: A Call For Change To The Pricing Model For Lifesaving Drugs In The United States, Aubri L. Swank Jan 2023

The Pricelessness Of Life Vs. Profiting From Illness: A Call For Change To The Pricing Model For Lifesaving Drugs In The United States, Aubri L. Swank

Duquesne Law Review

Pharmaceutical drug prices in the United States are at the highest costs yet seen, and it looks like these prices are still continuing to climb. While people in the United States are struggling to pay for necessary medications, the prices of those same medications are drastically lower in other countries.

This Article directly analyzes the issue of pharmaceutical pricing in the United States through two specific lifesaving drugs, insulin and epinephrine. Both drugs are prescriptions required to keep some people alive, and both are related to manufacturing companies with questionable, overwhelming control of the markets. While there has been recent …

Analysis Of Lepilemur Edwardsi Seasonal Acoustic Activity, Samantha Henry Jan 2023

Analysis Of Lepilemur Edwardsi Seasonal Acoustic Activity, Samantha Henry

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) has historically been used as a noninvasive technique to study biodiversity, activity patterns, distribution, and species dispersal. The use of acoustic data has expanded in ecological research; however, studies focusing on primates are underrepresented, especially for nocturnal species. This study seeks to increase the understanding of acoustic activity in the nocturnal Milne-Edwards' sportive lemur (Lepilemur edwardsi). This species is endangered and endemic to the lowland dry forests in northwest Madagascar. Specifically, this study aims to describe the daily and annual acoustic activity patterns of the L. edwardsi. The PAM survey was conducted using …

A Cross-Cultural Exploration: Global Methods Of Contraception And Family Planning, Cora Pereira Jan 2023

A Cross-Cultural Exploration: Global Methods Of Contraception And Family Planning, Cora Pereira

Undergraduate Review

In today's world, women are attempting to take control of their reproductive choices. Some have been met with roadblocks that may prohibit or limit access to women's healthcare centers and family planning services. This research explores women’s reproductive health and contraception usage and the impact of cultural influences globally. Cultural adversities may overshadow the benefits of having access to healthcare facilities along with contributing to the circulation of inaccurate information. This may prevent or deter women from accessing healthcare facilities and methods of family planning. Understanding variation in the United States and in other cultures will contribute to the global …

Bluegrass Backstory: Connecting People To Local History Through Podcasting, David Hunter Hartlage Jan 2023

Bluegrass Backstory: Connecting People To Local History Through Podcasting, David Hunter Hartlage

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Kentucky has a rich cultural identity, built upon a storied local history. Unfortunately, certain aspects of local cultural history, such as the origins of Kentucky vernacular music or how the bourbon industry has promoted growth in Kentucky’s communities, are not readily apparent. The increasing popularity and accessibility of podcasting offers local historians an opportunity to address this problem.

The goal of this project was to create a podcast program which makes information regarding the history, culture, and identity of Kentucky accessible to all in a scholarly—but engaging—way. I researched podcasting equipment and how to use it, then purchased that equipment …

The Archaeology Of Jesús De Otoro And Intervalley Variation In Central Honduras, William John Mcfarlane, Miranda Stockett Suri Jan 2023

The Archaeology Of Jesús De Otoro And Intervalley Variation In Central Honduras, William John Mcfarlane, Miranda Stockett Suri

Proyecto Arqueologico de Otoro

Southeast Mesoamerica is an often-used label for the contiguous national borders of Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. With few exceptions, these modern borders demarcate the southern limits of the research area for most Mayanists. So too do these borders mark the northern limits for the archaeologists of Central America. Indeed, Southeast Mesoamerica as a concept is problematic because it glosses over the differences of the peoples living along these cultural demarcations. This is especially the case for the ancient inhabitants who lived in northwestern and central Honduras. For the contributors to this volume, the edges of these culture areas are …

A Qualitative Study On The Effect Of Misattributed Parentage Experiences, Jodi Klugman-Rabb Jan 2023

A Qualitative Study On The Effect Of Misattributed Parentage Experiences, Jodi Klugman-Rabb

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Identity formation is a lifelong process, significantly influenced by factors involving social groups such as family, culture, and life events. Identity confusion can result from Misattributed Parentage Experiences (MPE), when people learn they are not biologically related to a parent(s) who raised them as such, possibly triggering genealogical bewilderment, the state when uncertain knowledge of biological parents, or lack thereof, leads to maladjustment, confusion, and uncertainty (Leighton, 2012) in identity. The present study is a qualitative analysis of the effect genealogical bewilderment has on identity formation and crises for MPE adults in the United States between 2012 and 2022. Using …

Mapping Gothicism In Hiv/Aids Art, And The Importance Of Art In Understanding Queer Cultural Trauma: Canadian Perspectives, Riley Buist Jan 2023

Mapping Gothicism In Hiv/Aids Art, And The Importance Of Art In Understanding Queer Cultural Trauma: Canadian Perspectives, Riley Buist

2023 Undergraduate Awards

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Canada continues to be a defining moment in queer trauma and cultural production. Since the 1990s, queer academics and theorists have become increasingly interested in how queer people navigate and negotiate trauma. With the establishment of Queer Studies and Gothic Studies, the two fields have been considered complementary both historically and contemporarily. Queer academics and theorists have discovered that queer cultural production continuously evokes gothic themes, tropes, and atmospheres to understand cultural trauma. Previous research primarily focuses on literature, and my research seeks to expand the field into visual mediums. My research is interested in understanding …

African Presence In The Ancient New World, Garrett Spruiell Jan 2023

African Presence In The Ancient New World, Garrett Spruiell

IdeaFest 2023

Within this research project, I'll be presenting a controversial topic that many today deem as unchallengeable due to the influence from the history books the colonizers of our country wrote to indoctrinate us with. From this investigation, I intend to analyze conflicting theories so as to narrow down the plausibility of pre-Columbian transoceanic travel between Africa and the Americas. My goal with this project is to elevate African voices and perspectives, to show the public the possibility of alternative truths, as well as spread a sense of skepticism towards our Western history books.

Biological Profiles: An Analysis On The Applicability And Implications Of Traditional And New Methods In Forensic Anthropology, Jazmin Borrayo

IdeaFest 2023

In forensics, commonly used when conducting an assessment of skeletal remains is the implementation of a biological profile. The key elements that typically form the basic biological profile are age, ancestry, sex, and stature. These components consist of further methods that comprise the estimation process and are essential in identification. Within recent years, there has been a rise in attention to the use and application of certain methods. This project analyzes the applicability and implications of traditional methods commonly used in forensic anthropology when conducting biological profiles as well as examines the emergence of new methods in the field.

Emmer wheat, one of the main grains cultivated by ancient Egyptians, was used as the flour for the bread. The overall project to create ancient Egyptian bread was also successful. Further experiments would help achieve the goal of re-creating the accurate style of ancient Egyptian bread by focusing on re-creating the conical mold it was baked in.

The History And Development Of The Washoe People, Caroline Blair Jan 2023

The History And Development Of The Washoe People, Caroline Blair

IdeaFest 2023

This project is an exploration in the history, development, and reclamation efforts of the Washoe Tribe. This native tribe’s ancestral land centers around Lake Tahoe and therefore spans the border of Nevada and California. The Washoe people have been adversely impacted by colonial and westward expansion, particularly due to the introduction of disease, decimation of resources, and the emergence of the mining industry. The developing relationship between the Washoe people and both state and federal governments could set a precedent for tribes whose ancestral lands cross state borders. In addition, the efforts of the Washoe to reclaim sacred sites that …
