Walking Backwards As A Radical Practice For Design, Annika Olofsdotter Bergström, Juliana Restrepo-Giraldo Jun 2023

Walking Backwards As A Radical Practice For Design, Annika Olofsdotter Bergström, Juliana Restrepo-Giraldo

Nordes Conference Series

Walking backwards is proposed as a radical design practice as it creates time/spaces in-between needed to counter dominant narratives focused on effectivity. So-called time-saving technologies, instead of creating possibilities for free, spontaneous, unstructured, embodied time, add more time and space for production and consumption. Walking backwards is explored as a relevant practice to learn to work in-between complexities, certainty, and uncertainty. Even though walking is a widely recognised and explored method within the arts and academia, the practice of walking backwards has not been studied for the purposes proposed in this text. The aim is to problematise the notion of …

Nothing About Us Without Us: The Journey Of Digital Accessibility In The Making, Luciana Terceiro Jun 2023

Nothing About Us Without Us: The Journey Of Digital Accessibility In The Making, Luciana Terceiro

Nordes Conference Series

This exploratory paper aims to discuss and reflect on digital accessibility practices in developing projects and products, focusing mainly on design activities. Digital accessibility is a characteristic of digital products and services like websites that allows people with disabilities to access and use them. Although its relevance, accessibility is not present in many technological objects. When tech practitioners and companies are asked why accessibility is not a priority, several reasons are mentioned, like costs and the available development time. What would lay below the most apparent arguments? What constitutes an organisational culture that leaves factors such as accessibility behind? The …

Teaching Design For Sustainability From The Classroom: Uncomfortable Reflections From A Comfortable Place, Eeva Berglund Jun 2023

Teaching Design For Sustainability From The Classroom: Uncomfortable Reflections From A Comfortable Place, Eeva Berglund

Nordes Conference Series

The paper describes co-teaching on a masters programme with design for sustainability at its core. The programme puts emphasis on involving multiple societal stakeholders but increasingly also on appreciating the often tricky social and value-laden dimensions of designing better futures. In this context, we seek to foster students’ imagination and support their utopian thought and futures-oriented design. The classroom experience shows that this is achievable through rather conventional academic practices, ones rooted in disciplinary insight and empirical and historical research. The paper also suggests that enhancing students’ self-critical understanding of their own situatedness, even their own comforts, by grounding both …

Craft As A Matter Of Care To Inspire The Design Of Computational Things, Vasiliki Tsaknaki, Anna Vallgårda Jun 2023

Craft As A Matter Of Care To Inspire The Design Of Computational Things, Vasiliki Tsaknaki, Anna Vallgårda

Nordes Conference Series

Craft, being the skillful process of turning materials into artifacts, bears many similarities with interaction design as a practice of giving form to computational materials. Zooming into the studios of five craftspeople and through interviews with them, we unfold stories of the joys and struggles they encounter in their practices. Departing from these, we unpack and discuss how craft is a matter of care, using the notion of care by de la Bellacasa. We argue that the dual movements of care in the making and through the artifact are linked and that the ability to generate care through artifacts comes …

Absent Futures In Gothenburg’S Jubilee Architecture, Karl Palmås Jun 2023

Absent Futures In Gothenburg’S Jubilee Architecture, Karl Palmås

Nordes Conference Series

This paper interrogates the relation between architectural design, on the one hand, and social imaginaries of time, on the other. It does so in the context of ongoing research on the futures imagined and enacted in the architectural structures emerging in time for Gothenburg’s 2023 quadricentennial jubilee. The argument focuses on the ways in which conceptions of the future are absent, particularly when juxtaposing the 2023 jubilee with the Gothenburg’s 1923 tricentennial jubilee. As such, the paper seeks to engage with recent scholarship on temporal approaches to design.

Theory Instruments: Helping Designers See The Invisible, Jacob Buur, Mette Kjærsgaard, Franciska Fellegi, Sisse Schaldemose, Tom Djajadiningrat Jun 2023

Theory Instruments: Helping Designers See The Invisible, Jacob Buur, Mette Kjærsgaard, Franciska Fellegi, Sisse Schaldemose, Tom Djajadiningrat

Nordes Conference Series

With increasingly complex technologies entering the daily lives of people, human-technology relations haves become more difficult to observe and make sense of. In this paper we discuss experiments with designing ‘Theory Instruments’ that allow designers to collaboratively play with multiple theoretical perspectives on field research material. We argue that the physical, tangible nature of these instruments helps to convey and experience the richness of theoretical frameworks and can make designers and researchers aware of easily overlooked aspects in ethnographic observations. We unfold the case of ‘charging electric vehicles’ across theories of Product Ecology, Rites of Passage, Exchange & Reciprocity, and …

A Planetary Turn For Design? Speculations On Withdrawal And Cohabitation, Kristine Samson, Michael Haldrup Jun 2023

A Planetary Turn For Design? Speculations On Withdrawal And Cohabitation, Kristine Samson, Michael Haldrup

Nordes Conference Series

Currently, notions of the planetary have made their way to the center field of design's key concern. In this article we ask the question: can we imagine a planetary turn for design and if so, what would be its key concerns. Drawing on ongoing research on urban nature, design and planning in and around Copenhagen, we, outline ‘the planetary turn’ as it has emerged in recent years and relate it to current movements in the design field, before suggesting five propositions open up for the ‘interstice’ and ‘in-between in design’, which we argue is never void of meaning but part …

The Illusive Type: Hunting Typographic Simulacra, Kyle Rath Jun 2023

The Illusive Type: Hunting Typographic Simulacra, Kyle Rath

Nordes Conference Series

Typically, when evaluating iconic typefaces, we investigate the degree to which they communicate well-established connotative narratives. Helvetica, for example, is an icon of simplicity and clarity and so, is applied across various designs to exude similar tones. Bodoni, a showpiece of Neoclassicism, detailing and adornment facilitated by technological advancement during the 18th century Industrial Revolution, often appears in designs suited to premium brands. Iconic typefaces such as these are tied to their symbolism; it appears that their symbolic ‘myths’ have ‘always been so.’ As I demonstrate however, there are examples of iconic typefaces whose myths are in fact entirely fabricated, …

Speculative Designs In Educational Settings: Tension-Patterns From A (Mostly) European Perspective, Enrique Encinas, Ingi Helgason, James Auger, Ivica Mitrović, Julian Hanna Jun 2023

Speculative Designs In Educational Settings: Tension-Patterns From A (Mostly) European Perspective, Enrique Encinas, Ingi Helgason, James Auger, Ivica Mitrović, Julian Hanna

Nordes Conference Series

The study of speculative designs (such as futures, critical design alternatives, or catalysts for reflection) is well documented in the design research community but the literature lacks attention to speculative designs in the service of a pedagogical practice. This paper reports on a two-year cross European research project investigating speculative designs in higher education contexts. We reflect on a broad data set including interviews, surveys, case studies and workshops involving educators and students. Our contribution draws on the results of this study to propose eight tension-patterns, each an interplay between opposing tendencies that educators and students need to address, more …

Nunneries And Pâtisseries: Tourists’ Gastronomic Experiences At Sacred Sites, Diolinda Ramírez-Gutiérrez Jun 2023

Nunneries And Pâtisseries: Tourists’ Gastronomic Experiences At Sacred Sites, Diolinda Ramírez-Gutiérrez

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This work traces the experiences spontaneously expressed by travellers who stop at convents throughout Spain to admire their cultural heritage and also to taste their typical pastries. The aim of this study is to analyse the dialectical relationship between the sacred and the profane in heritage and its tourism context, through content analysis and the narrative generated in a social network for tourists. The initial hypothesis is based on possible cultural differences in the characterisation of the experience of visiting these sacred spaces where pastries have been consumed and in the existence of a differentiated pattern association between different levels: …

Bat Use Of Afforested And Encroached Patches And Their Role In Extending Bat Habitat Into The Nebraska Sandhills, Jacob L. Wagner Jun 2023

Bat Use Of Afforested And Encroached Patches And Their Role In Extending Bat Habitat Into The Nebraska Sandhills, Jacob L. Wagner

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Nebraska Sandhills are currently undergoing a state shift to a redcedar dominated woodland due to anthropologic planting of eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) and woody encroachment from the periphery of the Sandhills. To better understand this novel ecosystem and how bats are utilizing it I collected data at Barta Brothers Ranch with acoustic sensor grids consisting of 24,100 m-spaced acoustic sensors placed adjacent to planted windbreaks. Supplemental data from the Nebraska North American Bat Monitoring Program was used for data analysis at larger spatial scales. I used linear regressions and kriging interpolation maps to see how bats used windbreaks during …

Intuitive Pathways Into Racist Beliefs, Mehr Latif, Pete Simi, Kathleen Blee, Matthew Demichele Jun 2023

Intuitive Pathways Into Racist Beliefs, Mehr Latif, Pete Simi, Kathleen Blee, Matthew Demichele

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

In this article, we present empirical evidence on the cognitive processes underlying racist beliefs and judgement. We draw on 47 life history interviews with former members of White supremacist groups to better understand how social interactions and stimuli from the wider environment inform cognitive pathways or how people think. While we examine both deliberate and intuitive pathways to racist belief, we focus on the intuitive ways that extreme racist beliefs are cognitively processed before, during and after an individual is involved in the White supremacist movement. In doing so, we fill a critical gap in the literature by providing an …

The Spiritual Migrants Of Sogenji: Notes Of Participant Observation In A Rinzai Zen Temple, Andrei-Razvan Coltea Jun 2023

The Spiritual Migrants Of Sogenji: Notes Of Participant Observation In A Rinzai Zen Temple, Andrei-Razvan Coltea

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Anomie is a cultural pathology that is becoming chronic in the West, characterized by the erosion of values, disintegration and deregulation. Amongst its symptoms we find anxiety, isolation, depression, tribalism, incoherence and loss of meaning. Individuo-globalism is a new ideology that permeates the religious market created by globalisation, encouraging individuals to discover, nurture and express their ‘true self’. This new spirituality forms the background for a journey that our ‘heroes’, a handful of non-Japanese inhabitants of a Japanese Rinzai Zen monastery, have been undertaking for years in search of the philosopher’s stone that could cure anomie and its symptoms. At …

The Intersection Of American Nativism And Eugenics: Anti-Japanese Sentiment Prior To World War Ii, James Richard Chesemore Jun 2023

The Intersection Of American Nativism And Eugenics: Anti-Japanese Sentiment Prior To World War Ii, James Richard Chesemore

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This thesis examines how the anti-Japanese sentiment and legislation promoted by those leading the American eugenics movement contributed to the key economic, diplomatic, and social policies that influenced the start of the Pacific War. In the years leading up to and following World War I, Japan desired and sought full parity, including diplomatic racial equality, with the United States and other Anglo-Saxon powers. However, the United States wanted to maintain the pre- and post-World War I world order, which meant the continued subordination of Japan on the world stage. As both nations sought global economic expansion and colonialism in the …

Sustainable And Inclusive Spiritual Tourism Development In Bali As A Long-Term Post-Pandemic Strategy, Jaeyeon Choe, Luh Putu Mahyuni Jun 2023

Sustainable And Inclusive Spiritual Tourism Development In Bali As A Long-Term Post-Pandemic Strategy, Jaeyeon Choe, Luh Putu Mahyuni

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The COVID-19 pandemic caused devastating socio-economic impacts in tourism destinations around the world. Many governments and tourism authorities could use the pandemic to seek more sustainable tourism development futures; for example, pre-pandemic Bali’s ‘tourism boom’ barely benefited local people and local businesses because of economic leakage and ‘tourist bubbles’. With an increasing demand on spiritual travel in the post pandemic period, Bali is seeking new opportunities as a spiritual tourism destination. This opportunity is based on their rich cultural and natural resources, and living heritage that can be related to spiritual tourism activities. This spiritual tourism development can contribute to …

Influence Of Librarians Attitude Toward Cataloguing And Classification In Academic Libraries, Fajiwe Olabode Thomas, Subair Roselyn E, Enamudu Augustine I, Omonagbe C. O, Ogungbemile A. E

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study investigated the influence of librarians’ attitude toward cataloguing and classification in academic libraries. Academic library is the heartbeat of a higher institution of learning. Without an academic library, students, researchers, staff might find it very difficult to study and conduct effective and efficient research. All information resources in academic libraries are expected to be catalogued and classified by librarians/cataloguers with standard classification schemes which would bring all the related books together. The attitude of librarians toward cataloguing and classification can be positive or negative. Positive in the essence that they tend to enjoy or like cataloguing and classification, …

The library and information centres are therefore charged with proper organization and management of the records.

Trans Futures In The Present Moment, Willow Grace Eckmayer Jun 2023

Trans Futures In The Present Moment, Willow Grace Eckmayer

University Honors Theses

The current climate for trans folks in the U.S. remains increasingly hostile and many researchers have called attention to the "joy deficit" within the existing trans literature (Shuster & Westbrook, 2022). This study investigates what trans individuals are currently doing to survive, thrive, and resist in a belligerent socio-political climate. To answer this, five community conversations with 25 participants were held using a semi-structured conversation guide. Within the analysis, the central theme that emerged was that trans individuals are using their communities to create radical futures. Our communities are supporting us through mutual aid and radical acts of care, which …

Synodality, Community, And The Margins, Gemma Tulud Cruz Jun 2023

Synodality, Community, And The Margins, Gemma Tulud Cruz

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

Synodality is generally understood to represent a process of discernment-with the aid of the Holy Spirit-involving bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics, each according to the gifts and charisms of their vocation. As Gaudium et Spes reminds us it is for God’s people as a whole, with the help of the Holy Spirit, and especially for pastors and theologians, to listen to the various voices of our day, discerning them and interpreting them, and to evaluate them in the light of the divine word, so that the revealed truth can be increasingly appropriated, better understood, and more suitably expressed (GS, …

孟母三迁 (Meng Mu San Qian): New Chinese Immigrant Parents' Narratives About Involvement In U.S. Public High School Education, Haixia Li Jun 2023

孟母三迁 (Meng Mu San Qian): New Chinese Immigrant Parents' Narratives About Involvement In U.S. Public High School Education, Haixia Li

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

The phrase 孟母三迁(Meng Mu San Qian) refers to a traditional Chinese story in which a mother moves three times to better her child’s education. The story evokes considerable parental and family sacrifices to provide educational opportunities. Meng Mu San Qian (孟母三迁) offers a powerful metaphor for the experiences of migrant and immigrant parents who undertake tremendous and profoundly life-altering journeys to secure better education for their children. The story is especially useful in capturing the experiences of Chinese immigrant parents, particularly those who moved to the U.S. after 2016 and faced unprecedented challenges, in part due to xenophobia of the …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Previous immunological studies in the eastern USA have failed to establish a direct connection between Paleoamericans and extinct megafauna species. The lack of physical evidence for the presence of extinct megafauna begs the question, did early Paleoamericans regularly hunt or scavenge these animals, or were some megafauna already extinct? In this study of 120 Paleoamerican stone tools from across North and South Carolina, we investigate this question using crossover immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP). We find immunological support for the exploitation of extant and extinct megafauna, including Proboscidea, Equidae, and Bovidae (possibly Bison antiquus), on Clovis points and scrapers, as well as possible …

Journey, Movement, Affect And Rhythm: Migration Through North Indian Folk Songs, Sangeeta Gupta, Shambhavi Gupta

International Journal on Responsibility

This paper captures the lived experiences and affect associated with migration, through the folk songs of North India. While migration is usually studied as a larger demographic movement involving temporary or permanent displacement and departure, our project captures the pain and apprehension it entails. We have tried to retrieve the vital connection between gender and migration through an analysis of folk songs about the experiences of women. These songs passed down as a part of the oral tradition, articulate how a woman engages and interacts with migration – both due to her marriage and also when her husband leaves home …
