Codebook: The Lsay 1999 Teacher Survey For The Y98 Cohort Technical Paper No. 20, Sue Fullarton

LSAY Technical Reports

Students participating in this LSAY cohort were originally sampled in 1998 from 296 schools nationally. In 1999 the schools from which the original sample of students was drawn took part in a survey to collect information about the features and programs of schools, as well as features of teachers and teaching, which might influence the progress of students in their school and in their later work careers. The survey involved two questionnaires: (1) a school questionnaire to be completed by the principal (or other school representative) and (2) a questionnaire to a sample of ten Year 10 teachers. The assistance …

Bubble Ring Play Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus): Implications For Cognition, Brenda Mccowan, Lori Marino, Erik Vance, Leah Walke, Diana Reiss

Sentience Collection

Research on the cognitive capacities of dolphins and other cetaceans (whales and porpoises) has importance for the study of comparative cognition, particularly with other large-brained social mammals, such as primates. One of the areas in which cetaceans can be compared with primates is that of object manipulation and physical causality, for which there is an abundant body of literature in primates. The authors supplemented qualitative observations with statistical methods to examine playful bouts of underwater bubble ring production and manipulation in 4 juvenile male captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The results are consistent with the hypothesis that dolphins monitor the …

Poverty Among Pacific Islanders In The United States: Incidence, Change, And Correlates, Dennis A. Ahlburg Mar 2000

Poverty Among Pacific Islanders In The United States: Incidence, Change, And Correlates, Dennis A. Ahlburg

Pacific Studies

Although poverty in the United States increased over the 1980s, it decreased for Pacific Islanders. But the incidence and severity of Pacific Islander poverty remained greater than that of other Americans. Poverty among Pacific Islanders declined because their attachment to the labor market increased, as did average education and work experience. The article shows that remittances may increase the poverty of some sending households and plunge other households into poverty. Also, the poverty of elderly and single-female-headed Pacific Islander households is so severe that increased welfare and Social Security payments do not lift them out of poverty. Raised are a …

Review Of In A Barren Land: American Indian Dispossession And Survival, By Paula Mitchell Marks., Leroy V. Eid Mar 2000

Review Of In A Barren Land: American Indian Dispossession And Survival, By Paula Mitchell Marks., Leroy V. Eid

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In A Barren Land covers a four-hundred-year history with the large brush strokes required of a text incorporating, chronologically and creditably, all the generally agreed upon major points of that story. What is in reality a large number of stories, each unfolding within a complex non-Western setting and often with byzantine logic, becomes for Marks-as the book's title succinctly indicates-a focus on what is now the usual media story of peoples dispossessed by an unstoppable force.

Review Of Wakinyan: Lakota Religion In The Twentieth Century, By Stephen E. Feraca., Tink Tinker Mar 2000

Review Of Wakinyan: Lakota Religion In The Twentieth Century, By Stephen E. Feraca., Tink Tinker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This slim volume is essentially a caricature of an older genre of anthropological books about Indians and other colonial "others." The new "revised" edition adds precious little new material or insight to the inadequacies of the 1963 version. Feraca, a one-time US government employee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, has an inconsiderable sense of the complexities of Oglala or Lakota culture. He describes some personal observations of Lakota religious traditions at the surface level, but has no clue regarding the deeper meaning or significance of what he attempts to describe.

Review Of Betraying The Omaha Nation, 1790 - 1916, By Judith A. Boughter., Mark J. Awakuni-Swetland

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The question of whose history is portrayed in any historical narrative remains open to debate. Judith Boughter notes in the preface to Betraying the Omaha Nation that "until now, no one has written a comprehensive history of the Omahas from their legendary origins to their near destitution by the early twentieth century." Her book is reportedly the first part of a trilogy, with subsequent volumes proposing to address Omaha history through World War II as well as contemporary legal battles to regain lost lands.

The Catholic School: Avenue To Authenticity, Denis Mclaughlin

Journal of Catholic Education

A document from the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education has confirmed that the fundamental purpose of Catholic schools is to create an educational environment promoting authentic humanity. This position has its basis in a Catholic concept of personhood, which underpins the thrust of the 1998 Roman document, The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium. This article outlines a philosophical framework for Catholic education and establishes a comprehensive theological foundation for community living. Education, the life of faith, and the common good all come under the rubric of authentic humanity.
