Mineral wealth has motivated and funded extractive empires, often at the expense of local communities, workers, natural environments, and public health. Yet those connections are not recorded in traditional mineral catalogues, which divorce specimens from context. This article examines the roots of those omissions and situates mineral cataloguing in the larger body of literature on knowledge organization systems and their relation to power. We examine how colonial ideologies of land and people become entrenched in mineral cataloguing practices, and how this reinforces the ways that contemporary geologists think about their work. We argue that revising mineral cataloguing practices is a …

V.Y. Mudimbe Et La Recherche D’Une Parole Pour-Soi : L’Essai Philosophique Aux Prises Avec L’Autobiographie : Vivre Et Écrire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article aims at two closely linked objectives : on the one hand, to show how the philosophical essays of V. Y. Mudimbe carry autobiographical sequences which complete or explain certain passages of his intellectual autobiography (The glorious bodies of words and beings) and, on the other hand, to question the stakes of such a rather singular practice in African philosophy. The basic hypothesis is that this practice is to be understood from an important moment in his intellectual development, namely May 68 and what has been called “La pensée 68” within which two antagonistic tendencies oppose each …

Why The Neurosurgeon Should Apply The Concepts Of Neuroethics In Their Daily Clinical Practice, Miguel Antonio Sandoval Balanzario, Lizbeth Itzel Sandoval Olivares, Noe Santiago Ramírez, Noe Santiago Rea
Archives of Neurosurgery
The human being is a community and social being, thus, he was capable to establish rules and humanize he's environment, allowed by the development of he's intelligence, as well as moral behavior. Nevertheless, morals and ethics have also evolved along the history, allowing the birth of neuroethics in 2002 with the objective to study ethical behavior of neurological research procedures and study ethics from the neuroscientific point.

Fashion Forward: Exploring Hong Kong Youth Perspectives Towards Traditional And Non-Traditional Media, Man Hin, Eve Chan
Department of Design and Architecture
Traditional publications, not only fashion, are gradually disappearing. To adapt to the evolution of technology, many publications have changed to online media or do not only retain traditional paper media but also create websites to publish articles simultaneously. For example, the well-known fashion magazines Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, COSMO, etc., have already operated websites to take the lead. However, some publications do not transform into online media, but instead, adopt other means to survive in this competitive industry. In recent years, Japan’s fashion magazines have begun to re-emerge. To attract readers to buy physical magazines, the publishers have attached attractive gifts, …

Addressing Pedagogical Challenges In Teaching Social Justice Issues: Are We Scared Yet?, Laneshia R. Conner, Rujeko Machinga
Social Work Faculty Publications
While films are popular as teaching tools in social work education, to critique social inequalities, horror films have not been the conventional genre. This teaching note describes the creation and deployment of a course that uses horror films to address social justice issues as part of different critical reflection, which is linked to practice wisdom. The author describes the structure of course, readings, activities, and reflections for expanding the use of this genre and well as limitations. The
use of horror films can be a useful and salient tool to engage students to draw upon social constructions of what it …

Prophet Or Loss: Mosiah1/Zeniff, Benjamin/Noah, Mosiah2/Limhi And The Emergence Of The Almas, Val Larsen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Mormon’s overwhelmingly dominant rhetorical purpose is to testify of Christ, which he and his protagonists often directly do. But he also communicates his testimony more subtly through carefully crafted historical narratives. His use of frame narratives is especially artful. In the Book of Mosiah, Mormon frames the dispiriting account of Zeniff and Noah’s rule with the story of its aftermath: the suffering of Limhi and his people, which is recounted both before and after the central Zeniff/Noah narrative and which underscores the folly in the narrative it frames. The Limhi story is, in turn, framed by a Mosiah family narrative …

Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan
Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 1928, the Institute for Government Research released the Meriam Report, a massive study of the nation’s Native Americans. Unflinchingly rational, the report criticized federal policy, but it also set a high-minded vision for Native American progress. Celebrated by the press at the time, hailed by historians in the following decades (Bertolet, 2007; Kelly, 1983, Philp, 1977, Szasz, 1974; Downs, 1945), the report became perceived as a turning point in the treatment of Native Americans and signaled a renewed faith in government. A century later, these reforms appear as mirages. In this paper, I show how the Meriam Report cloaks …
A Discipleship Model For Oral Preference Learners: Specifically Related To The Turkana People Of Kenya, Theresa Lynn Pottenger
A Discipleship Model For Oral Preference Learners: Specifically Related To The Turkana People Of Kenya, Theresa Lynn Pottenger
Doctor of Ministry
The Turkana people of Kenya are primarily oral learners, processing information in oral ways. Oral learners are completely reliant on what they hear, see, and experience because they cannot or choose not to read.1 Missionaries from highly literate western cultures unwittingly burdened these oral learners with literacy dependent teaching methods and discipleship practices. This has particularly left Turkana Christian leaders with few options for deepening their own Christian spirituality or leading others in discipleship. Additionally, a cultural disconnect between western spiritual categories taught by the missionaries and Turkana spiritual categories have left several Turkana spiritual needs unmet. The Turkana …

The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman
The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman
The Asbury Journal
Mark’s use of sighing/groaning language ([ἀνα-]στενάζω) in 7:34 and 8:12, when set alongside the LXX and other NT use of the terms, provides a powerful glimpse of the mystery of the Incarnation, as the Son of Man groans in solidarity with humanity and creation and the Son of God groans in concert with the Father and the Spirit in the eschatological work of liberation, healing, and restoration.

Theoretically Queer, Practically Straight: Linguistic Negotiations Of Identity And Same-Sex Attraction Among Mormon Men, Chris Vanderstouwe
Theoretically Queer, Practically Straight: Linguistic Negotiations Of Identity And Same-Sex Attraction Among Mormon Men, Chris Vanderstouwe
Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Contemporary popular representations of sexuality have begun to include more non-exclusively heterosexual conceptualizations of sexual identity. Viral media articles and op-ed pieces have sprung up with claims that “surprising numbers of straight men” have had same-sex encounters, promoting a representation of younger generations coming of age as more frequently rejecting identity labels entirely (e.g., DiDomizio 2016; LGBTQ Nation 2016). Many of the recent statements about this seemingly surprising phenomenon are based on a 2016 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that highlights the disparities between sexual identity and sexual practice in men and women ages 18 …

Effects Of Gonadal Hormones On Sensory And Cognitive Tasks, John Prentice
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Participants were recruited from the local community, specifically through attendance at professional conferences and LGBTQ+ events in the surrounding area. This sample received a brief battery of cognitive and sensory tasks. Participants also provided a biological sample in the form of saliva collected by the free drool method and completed a short demographic survey regarding their gender identity, medication, and health history. One aim of the presented study and the data collected, is to shed light on the much-neglected area of transgender neurological research.

What Are The Systemic Implications Of A Low-Tech Model?, Paul Hendrick, Ceri Almrott
Other resources
This diagram illustrates the systemic implications of adopting a Low-Tech model in production, distribution, and consumption systems. It contrasts the globalised economy's approach with a Low-Tech framework prioritising local resource use, repairability, and community-based reuse and distribution. The Low-Tech model highlights sustainable practices, including ethical material use, reduced complexity, and designing for reliability across short, medium, and long-term applications. The infographic demonstrates how Low-Tech choices facilitate behaviour and societal changes to support a circular economy and sustainable development. It emphasises the role of local production and consumption loops, encouraging systems that minimise carbon emissions and environmental impacts.
Conscience In The Catholic Church, Hang Geum Augustine Osb
Conscience In The Catholic Church, Hang Geum Augustine Osb
Obsculta
This paper deals with the topic of “conscience” in the Catholic Church. It explores the historical origins from the patristic and monastic traditions to the theologians in the medieval period and then also in the post-conciliar era through the lenses of canon law, catechism, and papal encyclicals. Finally, the author highlights the significance of conscience in monastic life as "mirror" of self-reflection.

The Art Of Silence In Waiting, Melissa Tovar-Guerrero
Obsculta
This piece reflects on what can happen when we decide not to worry and elect to learn the art of remaining silent. Like any art, it requires time to learn how to skillfully apply it in our lives. This paper was written as a homily for the Synoptic Gospels class at the Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary.

Open Circle Media The Collaborative Creation Of A Media Production Enterprise, Lindsey Jennings, Nickolas Steinig
Theses & ETDs
The basis of this project was the researching, establishing, and conducting of a student-run enterprise specializing in the delivery of multimedia services (IE film, photography, sound) working with real-world clients. Our primary purpose was to immerse ourselves in the professional industry of media production and to learn the nuanced dynamics and hard and soft skills the industry requires, with the intent of utilizing direct experience as a form of self-directed education. Simultaneously, we created a tangible body of work and built a network within our community. We created an enterprise called Open Circle Media, complete with its own website, branding …
The Harmful Effects Of Living In Brick Kiln Communities In The South Asia Region, Cambrie Ball
The Harmful Effects Of Living In Brick Kiln Communities In The South Asia Region, Cambrie Ball
Ballard Brief
Across South Asia, brick kilns pose significant health challenges, socioeconomic disparities, and environmental degradation due to hazardous air quality and exploitative labor practices. The poor infrastructure of kiln sites contributes to dangerous working and living conditions for laborers and their families, which remain unregulated due to the sector’s informal nature. These kilns emit substantial amounts of pollutants, including particulate matter and carbon dioxide, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and premature deaths. Furthermore, indoor air pollution from burning solid fuels exacerbates health risks, particularly for women and children. Poverty and low wages persist among kiln workers, with many trapped in …

The Kids Are Alright: Risky Play As A Learning Device, Carlyn A. Shanley
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent work has shown that risk-taking in both early childhood and adolescence has the capacity to positively affect the healthy physical, emotional, and social development of young people. Despite American society’s aversion to risk taking and emphasis on safety, research demonstrates many benefits of engaging in positive and prosocial risk-taking, such as increased self-efficacy, increased autonomy, and enhanced risk-management skills. Literature on adolescent brain development and its relationship to sensation seeking is reviewed to determine biological motivations for risky behavior. The evidence of increased sensation seeking in adolescence demonstrates a developmental purpose for risk-taking and demands additional research to determine …
