Mathematical Aspects Of Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier Jan 2004

Mathematical Aspects Of Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

When one looks at an Oriental carpet in the context of Western art, one usually perceives a richness of colors and patterns, and perhaps the contrast between central field and surrounding borders. A careful observer might notice the appearance of superimposed plane patterns in the central field and multiple linear patterns in the surrounding borders. Each of patterns, whether in the field or the borders, is composed of various design elements, which in combination are repeated according to the principles of symmetry, often with the addition of symmetry-breaking (Bier 1992, 1997, 1998, 2000a). The mathematical principles of pattern making according …

National Stereotypes In Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Radmila Popovic Jan 2004

National Stereotypes In Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Radmila Popovic

MA TESOL Collection

This thesis explores how to deal with lexically encoded national stereotypes in the second language classroom. I address this question starting with previous research on stereotypes, and discussing a principled approach to interrelating insights from a variety of paradigms and disciplines. Then I shift to the linguistic analysis of nationality words in English - phrases, idioms and proverbs, as well as connotations which these lexical items are capable of developing in certain contexts. Finally, I consider the implication of the findings for foreign language teaching, and suggest a pedagogical model for dealing with stereotypes in the language classroom.

English Language Learners, Comprehensive School Reform, And State Education Agencies: An Overlooked Opportunity To Make Comprehensive School Reform Comprehensive, Edmund T. Hamann, Ivana Zuliani, Matthew Hudak Jan 2004

English Language Learners, Comprehensive School Reform, And State Education Agencies: An Overlooked Opportunity To Make Comprehensive School Reform Comprehensive, Edmund T. Hamann, Ivana Zuliani, Matthew Hudak

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

After verifying that the federally supported Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration (CSRD) program schools in the 7 states studied had a disproportionately high English Language Learner (ELL) population, we examined the understandings and guidance about ELLs that was included by those states’ state education agencies (SEAs) in the policy documents that they generated for CSRD. Specifically, we looked at the CSRD plans that SEAs submitted to the U.S. Department of Education and at the first requests for proposals they circulated to schools. In those documents, we found little recognition of the dichotomy identified by Miramontes, Nadeau, and Commins (1997) between school …

Intellectual Property And Indigenous Peoples: Adapting Copyright Law To The Needs Of A Global Community, Megan M. Carpenter Jan 2004

Intellectual Property And Indigenous Peoples: Adapting Copyright Law To The Needs Of A Global Community, Megan M. Carpenter

Law Faculty Scholarship

The definition and scope of intellectual property and associated laws are under intense debate in the emerging discourse surrounding intellectual property and human rights. These debates primarily arise within the context of indigenous peoples' rights to protection and ownership of culturally specific properties. It is true that intellectual property laws are based on Western, developed markets, Western concepts of creation and invention, and Western concepts of ownership. But whatever their origins, those laws have been, and currently are, the primary vehicle for the protection of artistic, literary, and scientific works worldwide. To segregate indigenous interests from this international legal regime, …

Online Qualitative Research In The Age Of E-Commerce: Data Sources And Approaches, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Dong Zhang Jan 2004

Online Qualitative Research In The Age Of E-Commerce: Data Sources And Approaches, Nikhilesh Dholakia, Dong Zhang

College of Business Faculty Publications

With the boom in E-commerce, practitioners and researchers are increasingly generating marketing and strategic insights by employing the Internet as an effective new tool for conducting well-established forms of qualitative research (TISCHLER 2004). The potential of Internet as a rich data source and an attractive arena for qualitative research in e-commerce settings—in other words cyberspace as a "field," in the ethnographic sense—has not received adequate attention. This paper explores qualitative research prospects in e-commerce arenas.

A Lego Model Of The Modularity Of The Mind, Steven J. Scher Jan 2004

A Lego Model Of The Modularity Of The Mind, Steven J. Scher

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In this paper I propose that the dominant form of evolutionary psychology (which I term “cognitive adaptationism”) can be improved by adopting an alternative version of the concept of mental modularity. I suggest a metaphor of mental modules as Lego blocks. The Lego blocks represent a relatively small set of elementary operations that the mind/brain can carry out. These Lego blocks are repeatedly assembled in different ways to execute a wide variety of different functions. These repeated assemblies correspond more closely to the things that cognitive adaptationists have asserted are modules. Arguments in favor of the Lego model include the …

Models Of Cosmic Order: Physical Expression Of Sacred Space Among The Ancient Maya, Jennifer P. Mathews, J. F. Garber Jan 2004

Models Of Cosmic Order: Physical Expression Of Sacred Space Among The Ancient Maya, Jennifer P. Mathews, J. F. Garber

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

The archaeological record, as well as written texts, oral traditions, and iconographic representations, express the Maya perception of cosmic order, including the concepts of quadripartite division and layered cosmos. The ritual act of portioning and layering created spatial order and was used to organize everything from the heavens to the layout of altars. These acts were also metaphors for world creation, world order, and establishing the center as a position of power and authority. This article examines the articulations of these concepts from the level of caches to the level of regions from the past and present in an attempt …
