Some Systemic Issues In The Development Of The Aerospace Industry Technical Workforce Of The Future, John H. Mcmasters, Russell M. Cummings

Aerospace Engineering

This paper is a continuation of the authors’ previous examinations of a suite of issues surrounding the putative decline in aeronautics in this country. The purpose of this paper is to discuss three specific issues believed to be of particular importance to the future of our industry. The first is the question of how many engineers we may need in our future as we confront the problem of an aging workforce and the globalization of our industry. The second is the question of what skills and abilities these engineers will need to possess as the overall industry continues to evolve. …

“Untiring Joys And Sorrows”: Yeats And The Sidhe, Kathleen A. Heininge Jan 2004

“Untiring Joys And Sorrows”: Yeats And The Sidhe, Kathleen A. Heininge

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "In popular culture, the idea of Irishness has long been associated with the idea of fairies and leprechauns. This association has been explored by scholars who treat the Sidhe—also known as the daoine maithe, or the “good people”—as either a sociological or a literary construct. Most often, the sociological con- struct is somewhat insidious and the literary construct tends to be romantic. Recently, Angela Bourke has explored how the folkloric understanding of the fairies may be used to explain the otherwise inexplicable—for instance, when hormonal changes that come about through puberty or menopause were explained by saying that …

The Lineage Model And Archaeological Data In Late Classic Northwestern Belize, Jon B. Hageman Jan 2004

The Lineage Model And Archaeological Data In Late Classic Northwestern Belize, Jon B. Hageman

Anthropology Faculty Publications

As central topics of anthropological study from the 1940s through the 1970s, kinship and lineage became largely discredited during the 1980s. Recent scholarship, however, has indicated that kinship and lineage, when considered as the products of social activity, can make important contributions to studies of living and past populations. This paper explores the lineage as a model of social organization distinguished by specific activities practiced by members of Late Classic Maya social groups. This model is derived from cross-cultural literature on lineages, but practices associated with lineage organization are historically and culturally specific. A suite of archaeological correlates, based on …

When James Anastos, a transgender man, turned 21 and moved into a residential living environment for the neurologically impaired in Staten Island, his male gender identity became a problem. "Being transgender, they told me they could have me put away if I dressed like a boy. They didn't like the way I dressed—all boys' clothes," he told me during an interview.

Practices, Core Practices And The Work Of The Holy Spirit, David L. Stubbs Jan 2004

Practices, Core Practices And The Work Of The Holy Spirit, David L. Stubbs

Journal for Christian Theological Research

The recent interest in "practices" has created a multi-faceted discussion in theological circles that brings together insights from many disciplines such as ethics, philosophy, and cultural anthropology. However, there has been little extended analysis about how the many claims made about practices are related to quite similar claims traditionally made about the work of the Holy Spirit. In this paper, four distinctions are highlighted that can help us better conceptualize how the Holy Spirit might be related to different kinds of practices.

The Death Of Jesus And The Truth Of The Triune God In Wolfhart Pannenberg And Eberhard Juengel, Jonathan P. Case Jan 2004

The Death Of Jesus And The Truth Of The Triune God In Wolfhart Pannenberg And Eberhard Juengel, Jonathan P. Case

Journal for Christian Theological Research

For Pannenberg and Juengel the death of Christ has an integral role to play in instantiating in the life of God the critical moment necessary to their respective conceptions of truth. For Pannenberg a claim's capacity for truth lies in its ability to be disputed. Confirmation must follow if a claim is to be judged true, but even this confirmation is open to subsequent challenge. Truth is hence a historical process, only the end of which will bring about a definitive conclusion. Given this understanding of truth, the death of Christ on the cross is to be understood as a …
