Making "Medical": How Psychedelics Are Becoming Legal In Canada, Agnieszka Doll
Making "Medical": How Psychedelics Are Becoming Legal In Canada, Agnieszka Doll
Dalhousie Law Journal
As legal restrictions loosen, psychedelic-assisted therapies are advancing at an unprecedented pace and scope in Canada and the US. Presented as a miracle cure for post-traumatic stress, depression, and other psychological disorders, psychedelics are being touted to treat post-pandemic mental health crises. In this paper, drawing on Science and Technology Studies, I ethnographically trace the ongoing process and practices involved in transforming illegal psychedelics into a regulated medicine in Canada, paying particular attention to regulatory pathways and the development of networks involved in psychedelic advocacy. Using these pathways as a methodological “sampling device,” I map the main actors, their mutual …

Comparative Civilizations Review
Throughout 2023 and into 2024, the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations has been extremely busy in the furtherance of our vision. Here are some of the highlights.
The Rise Of China And The Concept Of Civilization: Constructing Conceptual Apparatus For Cross-Civilizational Comparisons, Liah Greenfeld
The Rise Of China And The Concept Of Civilization: Constructing Conceptual Apparatus For Cross-Civilizational Comparisons, Liah Greenfeld
Comparative Civilizations Review
The paper argues that the rise of China to a position of prominence in the contemporary world offers Western scholars a greatly expanded comparative perspective and, thus, an opportunity to re-assess their fundamental view of social reality. This comparative perspective draws attention to supra-national cultural unities, “civilizations,” first suggested by both Durkheim and Weber.
There are deficiencies in the current understanding of “civilization” in the social science literature, among others exemplified by “civilizational analysis,” and so this paper proposes a new concept which adds to the conceptual apparatus of sociological theory a new — fully independent of others — variant …

The northeast of Madagascar is as diverse as it is threatened. The area bordering the Analanjirofo and SAVA regions contains six protected areas and at least 22 lemur species. Many applied research and conservation programs have been established in the region with the aim of ensuring both wildlife and people thrive in the long term. While most of the remaining humid evergreen forest of northeast Madagascar is formally protected, the local human population depends heavily on the land, and unsustainable natural resource use threatens this biodiversity hotspot. Drawing from our collective experiences managing conservation activities and research programs in northeast …

Evaluation Of Sustainable Waste Valorization Using Treesoft Set With Neutrosophic Sets, Ali Alqazzaz, Karam M. Sallam
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study proposed a neutrosophic set framework with TreeSoft Set for sustainable waste valorization selection. The neutrosophic set is used to overcome uncertainty and vague information in the evaluation process. The neutrosophic set has three membership degrees: truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. The multi criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology deals with various criteria to evaluate waste valorization. The VIKOR method is an MCDM method used to rank the alternatives. The numerical example was created with 12 criteria and 10 alternatives. Three decision-makers and experts are invited to evaluate the requirements and options. We used the bipolar neutrosophic numbers to replace the opinions …
The Bell Jars: Smith College, Pelargonium Sidoides, And Sylvia Plath's Botanical Imagination, Colin Hoag
The Bell Jars: Smith College, Pelargonium Sidoides, And Sylvia Plath's Botanical Imagination, Colin Hoag
Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Sylvia Plath’s novel The Bell Jar chronicles prize-winning college student Esther Greenwood’s descent into melancholy and attempted suicide. An emerging writer, Esther sees clearly the paths available to her under 1950s US patriarchy: homemaker or eccentric intellectual. Each on its own is untenable, and choosing one precludes the other. The bell jar metaphor conjures a sense of confinement and suffocation, but this essay offers a multispecies reading that shows why such an interpretation is too narrow. The essay looks carefully at the bell jar, its function within her story, and the context within which Plath encountered it, namely, as a …
Growing Into Kusang-Loob And Ka-Kristong Loob: Some Implications Of Exploring Loob As The Filipino’S Understanding Of Conscience In Today’S Times, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy
Growing Into Kusang-Loob And Ka-Kristong Loob: Some Implications Of Exploring Loob As The Filipino’S Understanding Of Conscience In Today’S Times, Patrick Vance S. Nogoy
Loyola Papers
This paper explores the Filipino concept of loob as a culturally rooted understanding of conscience, building on earlier inculturation efforts. It proposes the development of kusang-loob and ka-Kristong loob as pathways for orienting conscience toward Christ. Emphasizing that conscience formation is both personal and communal, the article highlights the importance of dialogue and attentive listening within th Church. It argues that such formation unfolds within a synodal process that fosters maturity, discernment, and deeper Christian identity.

“Human Instrument United With God:” The Dynamic Of Grace And Freedom In The Constitutions Of The Society Of Jesus, Kevin Stephon R. Centeno
Loyola Papers
This article examines the dynamic relationship between divine initiative and humanresponse as articulated in the Jesuit Constitutions. It argues that the Ignatian emphasis on the primacy of grace, alongside the cultivation of interior freedom, constitutes a foundational principle of Christian spirituality. Through an analysis of key elements such as the general examen, formation processes, admission into the Society, personal Jesuit life, collaboration in mission, and leadership ideals, this paper demonstrates how “cooperative grace” is concretely embodied. Ultimately, it presents a vision of Jesuits as humble yet empowered instruments through whom God’s grace is made manifest.
Ethics Of Alterity And Corporeal Pneumatology For A Climate-Stricken World, Jojo M. Fung
Ethics Of Alterity And Corporeal Pneumatology For A Climate-Stricken World, Jojo M. Fung
Loyola Papers
This paper presents a post-pandemic theological reflection through the lens of the ethics of alterity. Drawing from Levinasian thought, it develops an “alterity pneumatology” that emphasizes relational co-creativity with others and the natural world. The article outlines five transformative “alterity shifts” that move individuals and societies beyond self-centeredness toward ecological responsibility and interconnectedness. In dialogue with contemporary Church teachings on the environment, this work contributes a constructive theological response to the global climate crisis.
A Review Of Gerd Lüdemann’S Methodology In “The Resurrection Of Christ: A Historical Inquiry”, Kelvin Ruel G. Novabos
A Review Of Gerd Lüdemann’S Methodology In “The Resurrection Of Christ: A Historical Inquiry”, Kelvin Ruel G. Novabos
Loyola Papers
This article critically evaluates Gerd Lüdemann’s historical methodology in his study of the resurrection of Jesus. Situating Lüdemann’s work within the broader context of the quests for the historical Jesus, this paper identifies both its methodological strengths and its limitations, particularly its reliance on a strictly historical-critical approach. It argues that a more integrative methodology—drawing from developments in the third quest—would yield a more balanced and credible interpretation of the resurrection accounts.

Legacy Of Colonialism And Post-Colonial Transition: The Algerian Conflict Of Identity, Judith Papineau
Legacy Of Colonialism And Post-Colonial Transition: The Algerian Conflict Of Identity, Judith Papineau
Social Sciences
Algeria was brutally taken and colonized by France for over 130 years, altering the structure of their society, cultural artifacts, heritage, and languages. Algerians fought and reclaimed their independence, but the consequences and adverse outcomes have seeped into the fabric of society long after the Independence War of 1954-1962. Building on the available literature on colonialism and post-colonial societies and theories, this paper examines, from a sociological perspective, the relationship between Algerians, language plurality, and how the country’s education system and its language education policies, maintained by the power, play a crucial role in systemically perpetuating a deeply rooted conflict …

Culture, Politics, And Economics: Alcohol And The Dynamic Social Environment Of Celtic Europe, Trevor Davidson
Undergraduate Student Work
Celtic culture in Iron Age Europe set the stage for many modern European nations and their cultural geographies. This paper seeks to question the connection between historical accounts of Celtic culture and the production and consumption of alcohol. In particular, the interactions between alcohol and the cultural, economic, and political of Celtic Age European populations is explored through modern archaeological sciences and geographic interpretation. From this research, a clear connection between regional environments and trends of alcohol production, trade, and flavor preference is demonstrated from thematic artifacts and bioarchaeological remains. Interactions between the southern Celtic tribes and Mediterranean cultures is …

Obstetric Racism, Education, And Racial Concordance, Terri L Major-Kincade
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The United States holds the distinction of being the developed country with the worst perinatal outcomes despite spending the most per capita on health care. Black women are three to four times more likely than White women to experience adverse birth outcomes. These outcomes persist despite access to prenatal care, insurance, and college education. A long overdue racial reckoning has arrived, beginning with acknowledging the fallacy of race-based medicine and the role of enduring systemic racism as foundational to obstetric racism in the reproductive lives of Black women. Centering voices of Black women and honoring their lived experiences are essential …

The Role Of Organizational Leadership In The Success Of Higher Education Institutions: A Portraiture Study On Ashesi University In Ghana, Amanda Childress-Kannan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research shows that higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa are severely under-resourced, systemically lack strong leadership, have low enrollment numbers, lack scholarly productivity, and have high rates of attrition and turnover of students and faculty. Higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa do not compete well globally, with low research productivity and failure to retain top scholars. Higher education institutions in Ghana are particularly facing this problem: Ghana has a relatively stable government, society, and economy, with less corruption and other malfeasance as compared to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Even with these advantages, Ghana generally fails to establish and maintain …

Achieving Equity In Child And Adolescent Mental Health By Addressing Racism Through Prevention Science, Nada M Goodrum, Daniel K Cooper, Sarah Edmunds, Guillermo M Wippold, Jessica Bradshaw, Julie K Nguyen, Norweeta Milburn, Funlola Are
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Prevention science is a multidisciplinary field dedicated to promoting public health and reducing early risk factors that lead to negative health outcomes. It has been used to successfully improve child and family mental health and well-being, including for families affected by adversity. Despite advances in prevention efforts, major public health inequities remain for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) children and families, in part because of equity-implicit "one-size-fits-all" approaches that do not directly address racism which in part underlies the very health concerns these efforts aim to prevent. Structural racism not only introduces additional risk for negative health …

“I Thought It Would Help” A Review Of Criminal Justice Undergraduate Knowledge Of Miranda Rights, Ellen Marcia Mcleod
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study aims to better understand the levels of understanding of Miranda rights amongst college undergraduate students who are studying criminal justice. By considering many factors like race, education, exposure, and confidence in understanding, this study looks to narrow down the components of Miranda rights that are misunderstood and what could be contributing to misunderstanding. The data were collected from a vignette style survey that measured various factors that could be contributing to the understanding or misunderstanding of Miranda rights. Results indicate that there are differences in Miranda understanding across different components of Miranda. However, results show that Black students …
False Conscience: Sustainability And Smart Evolution—Between Law And Power, Ugo Mattei
False Conscience: Sustainability And Smart Evolution—Between Law And Power, Ugo Mattei
Faculty Scholarship
The contribution describes the legal phenomenon as a playing field characterized by a progressive regression of the law, understood as a sovereign will from top to bottom, both in the vision of formalist legal positivisms in continental Europe and in realist terms, in the United States. Soft law represents the main strategy to subordinate the law to the interests of the economy, elasticizing environmental law, making it favorable to the market, reducing ecology to the simplistic metric of CO2 emissions. The consequence is a retreat of the statist vertical normativity of law which is not replaced by a de facto …

Relocating Lubra Village And Visualizing Himalayan Flood Damages With Remote Sensing, Ronan Wallace, Yungdrung Tsewang Gurung, Ryan Kastner
Journal of Critical Global Issues
As weather patterns change worldwide, isolated communities impacted by climate change go unnoticed and we need community-driven solutions. In Himalayan Mustang, Nepal, indigenous Lubra Village faces threats of increasing flash flooding. After every flood, residual muddy sediment hardens across the riverbed like concrete, causing the riverbed elevation to rise. As elevation increases, sediment encroaches on Lubra’s agricultural fields and homes, magnifying flood vulnerability. In the last monsoon season alone, the Lubra community witnessed floods swallowing several agricultural fields and damaging two homes. One solution considers relocating the village to a new location entirely. However, relocation poses a challenging task, as …

Prioritizing Indigenous Participation And Compensation In Research, Amanda Sabin
Journal of Critical Global Issues
Throughout history, the dynamic between colonial entities and indigenous groups has been characterized by exploitation and power imbalance. Indigenous knowledge has the potential to positively impact the world, through medicinal breakthroughs, radical approaches to sustainability, cultural heritage, systems of learning and adaptation, and more. Particularly in the context of research, fields like anthropology, botany and pharmacology serve to benefit from indigenous knowledge, but these interactions cannot continue to be based on extraction at the cost of indigenous communities. This work will discuss the future of relationships between researchers and indigenous communities; how this power dynamic must be transformed into an …

No. 17: South-South Migration, Pandemic Precarity, And The Informal Food Sector In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The analysis of COVID-19 pandemic precarity in Africa should focus on the ways in which pre-pandemic migrant vulnerabilities were reconfigured in ways that weakened economic resiliency and reinforced disadvantage. This is the first paper to apply the concept of pandemic precarity to the impact of COVID-19 on migrants working in the informal food sector of African cities. The paper develops a new method for measuring pandemic precarity and applies this to data from a 2021 survey of migrant-owned informal food enterprises in the city of Cape Town. The Informal Pandemic Precarity Index (IPPI) and Informal Pandemic Precarity Scale (IPPS) are …

Toxicity And Risk Of Biopesticides To Insect Pollinators In Urban And Agricultural Landscapes, Joshua Chavana, Neelendra K. Joshi
Toxicity And Risk Of Biopesticides To Insect Pollinators In Urban And Agricultural Landscapes, Joshua Chavana, Neelendra K. Joshi
Entomology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Pollinators play important roles in providing pollination services, maintaining biodiversity, and boosting crop production. Even though pollinators are essential to the environment and agriculture, their decline has been noted across multiple studies in the recent past. Both natural and anthropogenic factors have contributed to their decline. Much of the focus has been placed on climate change, habitat loss, pests and pathogens, and synthetic pesticides, but relatively little is known about the effects of biopesticides. Biopesticides are biological control agents derived from living organisms and are classified into three groups: microbial, biochemical, and plant-incorporated protectant-based products. Biopesticides are formulated similarly to …
