Community Opinions On Environmental Action On Isla Porvenir And Whichub Walla In The Guna Yala Comarca, Sofia Houts
Community Opinions On Environmental Action On Isla Porvenir And Whichub Walla In The Guna Yala Comarca, Sofia Houts
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Guna Yala Comarca is the autonomous, self-governed territory of the Guna people, one of seven Indigenous groups in Panama. The Comarca is located on Panama’s eastern Caribbean coast and includes 365 coral islands. Forty nine Guna communities and roughly 32,000 individuals live in the territory. The Guna General Congress is the highest authority, and each community has a local congress. As a low-lying coastal region, Guna Yala is especially vulnerable to climate change and is already impacted by sea level rise, biodiversity loss, and changing precipitation patterns. Sub-national, national, and international forms of governance and environmental action are crucial …

Vascular Epiphyte Population Dynamics Within Human-Modified Landscapes Of Guadalupe, Cerro Punta, Chiriquí, Panamá, Lucine Tashjian
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Epiphytes are plants that grow on other plants non-parasitically, and globally, epiphytes compose a very large and diverse group. They are especially abundant and species-rich in the tropics- particularly, in tropical montane forest ecosystems. Human population growth in the tropics, however, has resulted in significant declines in forest cover with land being converted largely for agricultural purposes. Studies on epiphytes have traditionally been undertaken in pristine, undisturbed forest ecosystems, yet terrestrial land conversion has increased the need to understand the value of human-modified ecosystems for epiphytic populations and biodiversity conservation. This study sought to understand the relationship between human modification …

Stains Of Emotion: Stories Carved By The Sun, Lucy Umland
Stains Of Emotion: Stories Carved By The Sun, Lucy Umland
Montserrat Annual Writing Prize
This work consists of a series of creation myths crafted in the style of Eduardo Galeano's Genesis from the Memory of Fire Trilogy, Part 1. The myths delve into the origins of freckles, wrinkles, laughter, and tears. Each tale uses symbolism, anthropomorphism, and fragmented, nonlinear timelines reminiscent of Galeano's work. Through poetic language and metaphor, the myths explore themes of love, loss, gender roles, cultural diversity, and unity. Analysis reveals the stylistic choices inspired by Galeano's writing. Themes are interwoven throughout the myths, portraying the shared human experience across diverse cultures while emphasizing the enduring nature of storytelling.

Management Faculty Research and Publications
Over the past several years, there has been ongoing dialog within our academic journals and the profession regarding the value of examining extreme, unconventional, or unsettling contexts in management research. These conversations have highlighted that perhaps more than ever, we as a society are facing unprecedented grand and perplexing challenges, and conducting research in unconventional or extreme settings can reveal complex dynamics or relationships that we may not understand otherwise. Less discussed, however, are methodological considerations for conducting research in unique contexts. As such, we aim to extend the explicit discussion of effective strategies for scholars who consider the perspectives …

An Alignment Of Financial Signaling And Stock Return Synchronicity, Tarek Eldomiaty, Islam Azzam, Karim Tarek Hamed Afifi, Mohamed Hashim Rashwan
Faculty Journal Articles
Financial signaling and stock return synchronicity may not be at crossroads. This paper optimizes the signaling effect of firms’ financial indicators on stock return synchronicity. The ultimate objective is to align firms’ financial signaling and stock return synchronicity, which implies a benefit of hedging against fluctuations in the stock market index. The data cover quarterly periods from June 1992 to March 2022 for the non-financial firms listed in the DJIA30 and NASDAQ100. This paper examines the observed return synchronicity as the dependent variable. The independent variables are classified into six groups namely, Solvency (or Liquidity) ratios, Assets Efficiency ratios, Expense …

The Ultimate How-To Guide: Addressing Sustainability In Fashion, Corinne R. Campbell
The Ultimate How-To Guide: Addressing Sustainability In Fashion, Corinne R. Campbell
Honors Theses
Every year, the pollution in our world increases but few people have addressed this issue. Between the culture of consumerism, little to no recycling, and lack of education, it can feel difficult as a regular person to make a difference. However, it is not impossible. As the consumer, the general public has the ability to enact change. While sustainability in the fashion industry may seem unattainable, making progressive changes in the manufacturing and buying process of clothing will make fashion more eco-friendly over time. With the proper education and guidance, anyone can make more sustainable fashion choices without going outside …

Guna Community Perspectives On Attributes, Changes, And Revitalization Of Nainu Agroecological Practices In Isla Tigre, Guna Yala Comarca, Panama, Neshima Vitale-Penniman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Indigenous agroecological systems are gaining international recognition for their capacity to conserve biodiversity while promoting food security and sovereignty. Nainu is the ancestral agriculture of the Guna people of eastern Panama, and it is characterized by a successional growing system that imitates the regeneration of the tropical forest in which it is practiced. This research aimed to (a) characterize how nainu is practiced by farmers in Isla Tigre, a community in Guna Yala, (b) characterize how nainu practices have changed over time, and (c) describe how farmers and community members in Isla Tigre are envisioning and actualizing the revitalization of …

Addressing The Cultural Mistrust Of The U.S. Healthcare System: Creating And Illustrating A Bilingual Children's Book, Ximena Patino Enriquez
Honors Theses
This thesis delves into the healthcare disparities faced by Latino Spanish-speaking populations in the United States and proposes multifaceted approaches to address these inequities. Drawing on empirical research and critical analysis, the paper explores the roots of cultural mistrust, systemic discrimination, and language barriers that may hinder access to quality healthcare for Latinos. Through a review of literature, the thesis underscores the detrimental health outcomes experienced by these communities, particularly concerning chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it examines the role of children's literature in shaping attitudes towards healthcare from an early age, emphasizing the need for accurate …

The Influence Of Race: College Students’ Sense Of Belonging At Their Predominantly White University, Jaelyn Barker
Honors Theses
Racism, underrepresentation, and anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity (DEI) movements are current, ongoing battles on college campuses across the nation, specifically at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) and universities. This study will examine the influence of race and other relevant factors on undergraduate students’ sense of belonging on their college campuses by understanding how students define and use race to shape and change their lives. The researcher created and distributed an original survey to undergraduate students at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), collecting a total of 466 responses. The study found that race, divided by white and nonwhite categorizations, did not have a …
Environmental Justice: Assessing The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Drinking Water Quality In Kentucky, Morgann K. Rowe
Environmental Justice: Assessing The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status On Drinking Water Quality In Kentucky, Morgann K. Rowe
Honors Theses
Poor water quality can lead to adverse health effects, and having access to clean water is essential to overall health. There are many possible sources of water contamination, and it is important to properly maintain water to ensure that it is up to standard. Socioeconomic status (SES) may influence drinking water quality, and marginalized populations may be the victims of disparities. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets drinking water standards through the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), and violations can be issued if water standards are not met. Previous research suggests low-income non-white populations may experience higher water violations. Rural …

Aesthetic Exclusion Within American Capitalist Culture: Lgbtq Students At Gettysburg College And The Creative Reappropriation Of Clothing To Forge Personal And Communal Identity, James M. Mikulski
Student Publications
For LGBTQ individuals whose identity expression transgresses heteronormative aesthetic values, mass production and its prioritization of a heteronormative consumer base for profit create feelings of otherness and ostracism. Previous anthropological theory on mass production and advertising recognizes the transference of meaning onto material culture through marketing and identifies the generic symbolic meaning that carbon-copy, mass-produced products hold. Theory and research surrounding colonial encounters attest to power imbalances wherein material culture is imposed on a powerless group, and marginalized individuals react through rejection or creative reappropriation of the material culture, which provides a basis for examining the power imbalance between corporations …

Unveiling Motivations Behind First-Generation Farming, Lucas D. Kisiel
Senior Honors Projects
In the contemporary era, traditional farming practices have
faded as industrialization reshaped agricultural landscapes.
However, a noteworthy phenomenon has emerged: individuals
willingly embrace farming, even without familial legacy. This
project aims to delve into the personal incentives driving
individuals towards farming careers. Specifically, it seeks to
shed light on the challenges encountered during farm
establishment and subsequent endeavors. By focusing on first-
generation farmers, this study explores personal motivations
that influence career choices in farming without the pressures
of familial tradition. For some, it's a quest for fulfillment, a
departure from the monotony of office work to engage in
something …

Limb Stiffness Increases With Hopping Frequency And Sprinting Speed In Elite Sprinters, Laurent Dorvilier
Limb Stiffness Increases With Hopping Frequency And Sprinting Speed In Elite Sprinters, Laurent Dorvilier
ALL - Honors Theses
During sprinting and hopping, the lower limbs act as a mechanical spring as it compresses and recoils to store and release elastic potential energy during each step. This is important because for individuals such as high performing sprinters, the stiffer the spring acting limb is, the more efficient it will be for the sprinter to maintain maximal velocity and optimal performance. The basis of this experiment lies in the fact that the mechanics of the lower limbs are modeled using to the mechanics of a spring, therefore, to calculate an approximate limb stiffness, Hooke’s Law can be used. Hooke’s Law …

Mission As Life Awakening In Africa And Beyond: Revisiting The Theology Of Life Of Engelbert Mveng (1930-1995), Mondohong Mouzou
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
The study aims to reimagine the Christian mission in sub-Saharan Africa through the lens of Engelbert Mveng's theology of life. Faced with deplorable conditions and threats to life in sub-Saharan Africa, the study navigates between critical analysis, comparative theology, constructive theology, and interpretive analyses of Mveng's artistic works to develop a new way of doing mission. lt shapes what could be labeled Mission as Life Awakening, which seeks to break with life-diminishing narratives, structures, and mortal spaces and reconstruct new arenas where life can be nurtured and affirmed spiritually and actively in all dimensions.
The critical analysis begins by examining …
Visio Divina With The Art Of Fra Angelico As Mental Pilgrimage: A Way Of Beauty And Perfection, John Paul (Frank) Puschautz
Visio Divina With The Art Of Fra Angelico As Mental Pilgrimage: A Way Of Beauty And Perfection, John Paul (Frank) Puschautz
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Throughout Church history, artists have created beautiful works of sacred art that attracted Christians to contemplate the Supreme Beauty who is God himself. Scripture has inspired visual artists to translate these revealed words of God into images that help to enter prayer. This study explores how the steps of lectio divina, a divine reading of scripture, can be applied to visio divina, a divine gazing on sacred art. To my knowledge, this study is the first attempt at an academic and systematic presentation of visio divina based on the traditional steps of lectio divina.
Although this visio divina can be …

Old Nagpra-New Rules: The Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act In Context, Nicholas S. Kennedy
Honors Thesis
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act is a federal law that provides a legal avenue for repatriation among federally recognized tribes. Although NAGPRA was passed with support from American Indian Tribal Nations, there has often been disagreements about how NAGPRA is intended to benefit American Indians and Anthropological Scholars. This thesis will explore some of the themes present in the NAGPRA discourse starting after the Archaeological Resource Protection Act was passed, up until the second decade of the 21st century.
