Intergenerational Technology Codesign In Deprived Coastal Regions, Ray Jones, Rory Baxter, Marius N. Varga, Oksana Hagen, Amir Aly, Dena Bazazian, Alejandro Veliz Reyes, Swen Gaudl

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Many coastal and rural areas in Britain are deprived. This regional aspect multiplies the effect of digital exclusion for older people. Younger people in these regions can also be digitally excluded. Codesigning digital technologies, using the natural and heritage resources of such regions would address this, but is rarely done. We present our methods and preliminary results, half-way through a 30-month project to develop novel technologies in extended reality, underwater telepresence, digital social games, and artificial intelligence voice interfaces and to use these assets to tackle digital exclusion. We are taking an intergenerational approach, working with 35 partner organizations, some …

An Anthropologist Goes Offshore, Or, Creating An Actor-Network Among Finance Elites, Samuel Weeks, Ma, Phd May 2024

An Anthropologist Goes Offshore, Or, Creating An Actor-Network Among Finance Elites, Samuel Weeks, Ma, Phd

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

This article discusses the methodological implications of a recent study on Luxembourg’s offshore financial center. Insight from actor-network theory was essential in undertaking its ethnographic research with elites from the country’s state and financial institutions. My intention in documenting this approach is to provide a template for ethnographers studying other localized contexts of global politico-economic significance, in which elite actors usually seek to curtail the enquiries of investigators. With this actor-network from Luxembourg as an example, I demonstrate how elite and difficult-to-access milieus can be entered via “networking” coupled with outreach via interviews and email correspondence. As I show, by …

Minnesota Public Assistance Program Utilization Frequency Among Jurisdiction Types, Heather Ann Winkleblack May 2024

Minnesota Public Assistance Program Utilization Frequency Among Jurisdiction Types, Heather Ann Winkleblack

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite the 2014 creation of the Minnesota Public Assistance Program (MPAP), no taxpayer program studies covering the 2014-2017 years have been conducted on how the program was distributed for evaluating the communities impacted and determining if there was a difference between years, threshold changes, and jurisdiction type. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of the MPAP for the 2014-2017 years across three different types of jurisdictions: tribal, urban, and rural to assess resource allocation. The study’s theoretical framework was based on Kingdon’s multiple streams theory. A quantitative quasi-experimental approach was used to examine under MPAP (a) …

The Journey In Hisham Matar's The Return: Between Freedom And Confinement, Noha Hanafy May 2024

The Journey In Hisham Matar's The Return: Between Freedom And Confinement, Noha Hanafy

English Language and Literature

Abstract The paper explores Hisham Matar’s journey in his 2016 memoir, The Return: Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between. In the book, Matar undertakes a journey back to his homeland in Libya to uncover the truth of what happened to his father, who was targeted by the Gaddafi regime during the sixties and was subsequently imprisoned for 20 years. While the memoir primarily focuses on the journey "back" to Matar's homeland in Libya, the memoir's depiction of "home" problematizes the concept, raising questions about its limitations beyond being merely geographical. Therefore, home becomes elusive and not necessarily at all …

We discuss three prominent themes—ownership, trust, and relational accountability—and their implications for concrete steps toward implementation of the CARE principles …

Beyond The Human: Crossovers For An Onto-Epistemological Bifurcation, Ester Toribio-Roura May 2024

Beyond The Human: Crossovers For An Onto-Epistemological Bifurcation, Ester Toribio-Roura

Articles

Building upon recent studies in new materialisms and feminist critical posthumanism with a focus on human and more-than-human relationships, this paper examines how the posthuman paradigm, by postulating the queering of identit(ies) via entanglement with the more-than-human (including technology), and by offering a critical examination of diverse modes of existence within a broader ecological context, can foster more inclusive and ethically sound ways of being in the world. Although posthumanism encompasses a wide range of perspectives and theories, including transhumanism, at its core, it challenges traditional notions of humanism, blurring the boundaries between what is human and what is more-than-human, …

Youth Work For People And Planet: Integrating Insights From Ecopedagogy Into Youth Work, Trudi Cooper, Tim Corney, Jamie Gorman May 2024

Youth Work For People And Planet: Integrating Insights From Ecopedagogy Into Youth Work, Trudi Cooper, Tim Corney, Jamie Gorman

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Youth work is not unitary, has a diverse history, and draws upon differing traditions; however, the focus of all major youth work traditions has been anthropocentric. This approach is now challenged by young people themselves through the climate justice movement, and institutionally through the United Nations Agenda 2030 resolution, which has developed integrated Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to “balance” social, environmental, and economic imperatives. This article examines what insights can be gained from ecopedagogy that would enable youth work to fully integrate an ecological perspective alongside traditional anthropological concerns. The discussion focuses on the nexus and tensions between ecopedagogy …

Moralistic Science: Socio-Cultural Norms About Sexuality In Indian Biology Education, Panchami Jose, Sugra Chunawala, Deepa Chari

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper takes the position that the discourses of science and morality are not distinct within biology education; rather, they inform each other to produce, discipline, and regulate human sexuality. Our analysis of the medical and moral discussion on sexuality in a secondary school science textbook (the 12th standard National Council for Educational Research and Training textbook), along with insights from interviews with teachers, reveals that the texts portray a romanticized notion of sex that is limited to a monogamous heterosexual relationship. In the first part of the paper, we analyze how the biology textbook discusses “safer sex” in the …

Feeling Otherwise: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Queer And Trans Youth Of Color Who Create And Embody Fursonas, Hazel Ali Zaman

Dissertations and Theses

Queer and trans youth of color are often the target of surveillance, bullying, discrimination, and abuse. However, in an attempt to navigate such violent and discriminatory circumstances, the queer and trans youth of color in this dissertation found refuge in furry art and performances, both online and offline, where they were able to express themselves freely and thus acquire a sense of belonging among others with similar experiences. In this dissertation, "a furry" is used to refer to an individual who self-identifies as one who has an affinity for anthropomorphic animal characters. A common practice among furries is creating a …

The record of past human adaptations provides crucial lessons for guiding responses to crises in the future1–3. To date, there have been no systematic global comparisons of humans’ ability to absorb and recover from disturbances through time4,5. Here we synthesized resilience across a broad sample of prehistoric population time–frequency data, spanning 30,000 years of human history. Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses of population decline show that frequent disturbances enhance a population’s capacity to resist and recover from later downturns. Land-use patterns are important mediators of the strength of this positive association: farming and herding societies are more …

Bones and teeth represent a common finding in ancient DNA studies and in forensic casework, even after a long burial. Genetic typing is the gold standard for the personal identification of skeletal remains, but there are two main factors involved in the successful DNA typing of such samples: (1) the set-up of an efficient DNA extraction method; (2) the identification of the most suitable skeletal element for the downstream genetic analyses. In this paper, a protocol based on the processing of 0.5 g of bone powder decalcified using Na2EDTA proved to be suitable for a semi-automated DNA extraction workflow using …

The Perpetual Progression In The Schleswig-Holstein Duchy: History, Politics, And Religion, 1460-1864, Christian Anthony Ahlers

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

German nationalism in the Schleswig and Holstein duchies that predates the German Unification Wars of the Nineteenth Century continuously transformed in response to Danish encroachment, civic disputes regarding treaty legitimacy, and war. The Germans in the duchies fought to retain their ancestral homelands and, in doing so, embraced a pan-Germanic consciousness that is the foundation for early modern nationalism. This consciousness dates back hundreds of years. This case study examines the Germans of Schleswig and Holstein and their experiences with the consistent and pressing Danish encroachment. Despite the encroachment, the Germans remained connected with their culture, traditions, religion, and their …

Focusing the study on the 42 girls from the same cultural group, who had the shared experience of attending Carlisle allows for an in-depth analysis of how gender, race, age, and culture influenced the experienced assimilation tactics used in education, land, and legal systems. Historian David Wallace Adams states that the reformers thought the “Indian problem” could be solved through “education, land, and law.” This thesis examines the Omaha girls who …

The Communal Table: A Wholistic Perspective On Food And Social Development, Sarah Cook May 2024

The Communal Table: A Wholistic Perspective On Food And Social Development, Sarah Cook

Masters Theses

In order to address issues of isolation in the wake of a global pandemic, this thesis examines the nature of the connection between food and community through commensality. “Commensality” is defined as the practice of eating together, which has demonstrable health benefits on personal, interpersonal, and psychological levels. Research reveals that, while commensality has been a foundational tenet of society since civilization’s beginnings, instances of commensality appear to be at an all time low for modern Americans. The results are diminished mental health, undeveloped support networks, and missed opportunities for emotional connection. All of these may be thought of as …

Pedagogical Influences Of Ethnic Percussion Among Virginia Middle And High School Band Directors, Chad W. Brooks

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Traditional wind band and Western art classics are standard repertoire in the instrumental curriculum, as ethnic percussion is rarely incorporated. The inclusion of ethnic percussion can emerge as an alternative to concert programming, rehearsal techniques, and applications, enhancing the learning and aesthetic experience. This mixed-method study examined the inclusion of ethnic percussion pedagogy in the instrumental music curriculum. The research findings did indicate that the use of ethnic percussion is present within instrumental music programs in Virginia. A large percentage of directors were unsure of the aesthetic influences such as cultural awareness and peer interaction. This study also discussed methodologies, …

A Phenomenological Study: Experiences Of The Church Of God In Christ Women And The Power Of Resilience, Debra Wylene Martin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This phenomenological study explored the perceived experiences of Black women in the Church of God In Christ (COGIC), who hold senior leadership missionary roles, and the power of resilience they appear to possess. Previous studies (Starr-Parker, 2012) regarding women in the COGIC discuss barriers for women in leadership; however, there is a gap in the literature that explores the perceived tenacity of women who hold senior leadership missionary roles. The researcher did not aim to criticize the Church of God In Christ doctrine but to examine the perceived experiences of Black women in that church who hold senior leadership missionary …

Social media allows for content containing stereotypes about Black women and beauty criteria that do not include them at unprecedented rates. This narrative qualitative study aimed to examine how social media content used by …

Pronomian Paradigm: A Pro-Torah, Christocentric Method Of Theology And Apologetics, Gregory Scott Mckenzie

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation sets out to demonstrate the continued validity of the Torah for all believers today. As such, this dissertation attempts to show that discontinuity of the Mosaic Covenant is scripturally, theologically, and philosophically untenable. The thesis of this dissertation is that Pronomianism is the paradigm that most cohesively melds theology and apologetics, through its interpretation of Paul’s words and deeds at the second Jerusalem council, which unveils the Torah’s centrality in New Testament theology, and that Pronomian moral apologetics reveal the Law of God as the only foundation for objective, biblical morality, and the guide to righteous living. This …
