The Uncanny Gaze: Nope’S Feminine Hero And Monster, Ryan Juliano
The Uncanny Gaze: Nope’S Feminine Hero And Monster, Ryan Juliano
The Graduate Review
Jordan Peele’s Nope is a recent addition to the horror film genre that is jam packed with symbolism and metaphor, but the main attraction, as with many horror films, is the monster Jean Jacket. Nope is a spoof on the UFO/alien invasion story, with Jean Jacket standing in as the twist; he is an airborne alien monster that has the flat, round shape of a flying saucer, but otherwise mostly resembles a vagina. Nope’s protagonists are set up against and obsessed with Jean Jacket, their main objective over the course of the narrative is to capture him on film. In …
Indecent Bodies In Early Modern Visual Culture: An Introduction, Fabian Jonietz, Mandy Richter, Alison Stewart
Indecent Bodies In Early Modern Visual Culture: An Introduction, Fabian Jonietz, Mandy Richter, Alison Stewart
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
Indecency ‒ the polar opposite of propriety, appropriateness, respectability, decorum ‒ has played a central role in our understanding of Early Modern cultural norms since the beginning of art history as an academic field in the nineteenth century. Accordingly, the concept of indecency was fundamental to historical and contemporary discourses that attempted to balance social limits on indecorous behaviour and images. At the same time, the appeal of such visual imagery, the attraction of graphic depictions of bodies and their actions, resulted in conflicting responses on the part of viewers. Historically, decency and indecency played defining roles in both the …

Better Nature: How Nature Improves Our Health And How We Can Use Nature To Do Better, Alyssa K. Snyder
Theses and Graduate Projects
This research paper outlines the salubrious effects of exposure to green spaces and explores how healthcare providers in urban areas can leverage the benefits of green spaces to combat poor health outcomes from the chronic stress of urbanicity, particularly in disadvantaged populations. Focusing on the metropolitan area of Minnesota, this study acknowledges existing barriers and constraints of populations experiencing health inequities while analyzing data on green space accessibility and seeking solutions for those communities, particularly BIPOC and low-income. This paper synthesizes evidence from various studies that establish the positive associations between health and exposure to green spaces, which can also …

Safety First: Assessing First Aid Educational Needs Of Outdoor Education Participants, Melissa Niemiec
Safety First: Assessing First Aid Educational Needs Of Outdoor Education Participants, Melissa Niemiec
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Much of the general population has a lack of first aid knowledge, despite engaging in activities that might end in needing some level of medical care. Even when first aid education is gained, sometimes it is subpar or less relevant to wilderness excursions. In order to create a high quality wilderness first aid course, it should be interactive and take place in a wilderness setting. Having basic first aid skills increases confidence and reduces anxiety of participants, possibly reducing the rate of injury.
Purpose: This needs assessment sets out to determine the first aid needs and concerns held by …

Theses and Graduate Projects
The growing cultural diversity and universality in the United States calls for the understanding of all members of society. Health care in the 21st century has become a human rights issue, where every member of the society desires to be treated within the specific culture. To Ethiopians, culture is seen as the embodiment of one’s existence, it influences perceptions and views of varying life dimensions. Culture, as seen in through the lens of individuals, is highly dependent on upbringings, traditions, beliefs and lifeways. Individuals from varying cultures perceive health and wellness from a cultural perspective. For Ethiopians, what it means …

Construct An Anaerobic Digester To Treat West Virginia University’S Food Waste, Kevin Omer
Construct An Anaerobic Digester To Treat West Virginia University’S Food Waste, Kevin Omer
Bridge Initiative for Science and Technology Policy, Leadership, and Communications
West Virginia University (WVU) should construct an anaerobic digester to dispose of the approximately 175 tons of food waste generated each year. Today, this waste is transported to a landfill 50 miles away, impacting the environment in a way that is not consistent with WVU’s sustainability policy. A digester, which uses bacteria to turn food waste into biogas, can reduce WVU’s greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. In addition, faculty can use the digester to conduct research and teach sustainable practices that can be used throughout the state once students graduate. Further, prospective students often review a university’s sustainability …

Students’ scores on the reasoning and achievement tests demonstrated significant improvements in comparison to the control group. Students’ Dialysis sketches revealed the progress …
Synthesis Of Putative Microcystin-Lr Degradation Products And Full Macrocyclic Cyanopeptide, Mahesh Kumar Yadab
Synthesis Of Putative Microcystin-Lr Degradation Products And Full Macrocyclic Cyanopeptide, Mahesh Kumar Yadab
Wayne State University Dissertations
This thesis primarily focuses on synthesizing fragments of microcystin-LR, which is a natural product, with the aim of establishing them as analytical standards for investigating the biodegradation pathways of MC-LR. Despite of the substantial interest in synthesizing, isolating, and degrading Microcystins over the past few decades, the availability of high-purity microcystin standards at known concentration for quantitative analysis of using LC-MS/MS remains limited. The synthesis of the proposed MC-LR fragments employs the Fmoc/t-Bu protecting group strategy to prevent isomerization. Additionally, novel methods for the total synthesis of N-Boc-Adda are explored, incorporating atom-economic approaches, cross-metathesis, and oxidative boron Heck reactions. The …

What Do People Affected By Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Want From Health Communications? Evidence From The Als Talk Project, Shelagh K. Genuis, Westerly Luth, Tania M. Bubela, Wendy S. Johnston
Office of the Provost
Introduction/aims: Health communication is central to effective, supportive amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) clinical care. Guidance for ALS communication is limited, focuses on diagnosis disclosure, and frequently relies on expert consensus and/or reviews. Patient-based evidence is needed to guide ALS health communication. We investigated how the experiences of ALS patients and family caregivers can inform effective communication practices from diagnosis to end-of-life.
Methods: Data were drawn from the ALS Talk Project, an asynchronous, online focus group study. Seven focus groups and five interviews (105 participants) were conducted. Data were qualitatively analyzed using directed content analysis and the constant-comparative approach.
Results: We …

White Coat Color Of A Black Angus Calf Attributed To An Occurrence Of The Delr217 Variant Of Mitf, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Renae Sieck, David Steffen
White Coat Color Of A Black Angus Calf Attributed To An Occurrence Of The Delr217 Variant Of Mitf, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Renae Sieck, David Steffen
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
A white calf, with minimal pigmented markings, was born to two registered Black Angus parents. Given the possibility of an unknown recessive or de novo dominant mutation, whole-genome sequencing was conducted on the trio of individuals. A 3-bp in-frame deletion in MITF was identified; this mutation was unique to the calf but identical to the delR217 variant reported in both humans and murine models of Waardenburg syndrome type 2A and Tietz syndrome. Given the coat color phenotype and identity of the mutation, our data support that this calf represents the first instance of this recurring MITF mutation in cattle.
Our Federalism And Our Democracy: Complements Or Foes?, Aziz Huq
Our Federalism And Our Democracy: Complements Or Foes?, Aziz Huq
Articles
This Essay reflects on the relationship between “federalism” and “national democracy.” More specifically, it considers the way in which the operation of formal state institutions can change the quality of national bodies necessary to democratic politics. State-level action can reduce the quality of national democracy even if it is motivated by national partisan forces. For example, state-level instruments can influence the possibility that national institutions either do or do not experience capture by minority factions, and are instead capable of roughly tracking the ebb and flow of majoritarian preferences over time. Without state institutions, national actors would lack instruments to …
Private Enforcement In The States, Austin Peters, Diego Zambrano, Neel Guha, Jeffrey Xia
Private Enforcement In The States, Austin Peters, Diego Zambrano, Neel Guha, Jeffrey Xia
Articles
Scholarship on U.S. litigation and civil procedure has scarcely studied the role of private enforcement in the states. Over the past two decades, scholars have established that, almost uniquely in the world, the U.S. often relies on private parties rather than administrative agencies to enforce important statutory provisions. Take your pick of any area in American governance, and you will find private rights of action: environmental law, civil rights, employment discrimination, antitrust, consumer protection, business competition, securities fraud, and so on. In each of these areas, Congress has deliberately empowered private plaintiffs instead of, or in addition to, government agencies. …
Nonparty Interests In Contract Law, Omri Ben-Shahar, David Hoffman, Cathy Hwang
Nonparty Interests In Contract Law, Omri Ben-Shahar, David Hoffman, Cathy Hwang
Articles
Contract law has one overarching goal: to advance the legitimate interests of the contracting parties. For the most part, scholars, judges, and parties embrace this party primacy norm, recognizing only a few exceptions, such as mandatory rules that bar enforcement of agreements that harm others. This Article describes a distinct species of previously unnoticed contract law rules that advance nonparty interests, which it calls “nonparty defaults.”
In doing so, this Article makes three contributions to the contract law literature. First, it identifies nonparty defaults as a judicial technique. It shows how courts deviate from the party primacy norm with surprising …

Utilizing Data Analytics On Single-Phase Ac Arc Flash Testing And Model Development, Po-Chen Chen
Utilizing Data Analytics On Single-Phase Ac Arc Flash Testing And Model Development, Po-Chen Chen
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Arc flash events could result in injuries, fatalities, and lead to severe medical expenses, equipment replacement cost, and even litigation, fines, and loss of business. Such events could also tremendously traumatize the personnel psychosocially and neurologically. Therefore, it is critical to accurately understand the potential arc flash hazards from all the real applications. Yet, due to the random complex nature of arc flash events and great number of uncertain variables involved, there are challenges to provide mathematical models for equipment designers in determining the arc-flash fault current and the incident energy of various types of events. The early arc flash …

Student Privacy And Learning Analytics: Investigating The Application Of Privacy Within A Student Success Information System In Higher Education, Mary Francis
Dissertations and Theses
Learning analytics are starting to become standardized in higher education as institutions use the techniques of Big Data analytics to make decisions to help them reach their goals. The widespread use of student information brings forth ethical concerns primarily in relation to privacy. While the overarching ethical issues related to learning analytics are discussed in the literature, there has been a call for more studies to examine how they are put into practice. This case study used interviews and other data resources to determine how privacy is addressed within a student success information system at a public institution of higher …
