Flower Power: Maximizing Natural Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Efficiency, Cheyenne Nelson
Flower Power: Maximizing Natural Dye Sensitized Solar Cell Efficiency, Cheyenne Nelson
Theses & ETDs
In recent years natural Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) have garnered interest as an environmentally friendly and inexpensive source of energy, unfortunately these cells are often low efficiency- generally less than 1%. This study aimed to increase the efficiency of natural Dye Sensitized Solar Cells through manipulating variables like dye selection, pH, selective dye combination, and separation of the most efficient dye. The effectiveness of these cells are closely related to the dye sensitizers chosen, due to the central purpose of a sensitizer being to transform sunlight into electron excitation to provide electrical energy. In this research, dried and ground …
Donald Trump, Social Media, And January 6th: An Analysis Of The "Save America" Speech And Usage Of Social Media In Connection With The January 6th Insurrection, Kp Powell
Theses & ETDs
This study lies at the intersection between politics and performance. I argue that social media is a political communicator and contributed to the January 6th insurrection through Donald Trump’s social media usage. He used his social media platforms to manipulate with misinformation and conspiracy theories. I examine the Save America speech Donald Trump gave on the morning of January 6, 2021, hours before the insurrection at the United States Capitol, as a performance piece and then analyze the words he said to connect his speech to misinformation and conspiracy theories. Along with this, Donald Trump urged his supporters to fight …

Investigating Ishikwaella Symbiont Transcriptome Analysis Concerning The Immune System Of Kudzu Bugs, Erika Calle
Investigating Ishikwaella Symbiont Transcriptome Analysis Concerning The Immune System Of Kudzu Bugs, Erika Calle
Theses & ETDs
This thesis investigated the roles of host-gut symbiotic interactions of Candidatus Ishikawella capsulate and Kudzu bugs in the Southeastern United States. Exploring the host-microbe interactions can provide insight into understanding the overall health of species. While the microbes get a habitat and nourishment from the host, these microbes, in turn, help the host by regulating various host physiological functions, including dietary digestion, and imparting protective immunity against pathogens (Khan et al.,2019). Megacopta cribraria or the Kudzu bug is an invasive species of stink bug from the Kyushu region of Japan that invaded the state of Georgia in 2009 (Eger et …
Estimating The Above Ground Biomass And Carbon In New College Of Florida’S Food Forest, Garcia Frank
Estimating The Above Ground Biomass And Carbon In New College Of Florida’S Food Forest, Garcia Frank
Theses & ETDs
The New College Food Forest and Carbon Farm, as it was originally coined, was a thesis project planned and installed by Jay McWilliams and Orion Morton in 2016. The intention of the food forest was not only to create a space for fruit and food production, but also to replace the existing lawn area and sequester as much carbon as possible. By estimating the amount of biomass stored and carbon that the FF has been able to sequester since its establishment, the ability of this urban food forest system to combat climate change can be quantified. The litter in the …
Scars On An Hourglass, Oceanna Krasny
Scars On An Hourglass, Oceanna Krasny
Theses & ETDs
This collection of experimental lyric poetry titled Scars on an Hourglass and its accompanying Artist’s Statement follow an unnamed female narrator in the aftermath of a fictionalized sexual assault. The structure takes the shape of an hourglass and foregrounds the seasons winter and spring. This collection, inspired by the process of travel, the creation of notebooks featuring collage art and handwritten excerpts, and my experiences within rape culture, is divided into two sections. “Winter,” with short experimental poems uses language to highlight harsh, blue-tinged imagery that conveys themes of identity, assault, and loss. “Spring” places emphasis on images of rebirth …
Homage To The Dungeon: An Attempted Homage To George Orwell’S Homage To Catalonia And The Spanish Civil War, Using Twine Interactive Media, Oscar Vaughn
Theses & ETDs
Homage to the Dungeon is an attempted syncretism of my experiences at New College of Florida-of historical reading and research, of learning syntax and formatting, of discussion and discourse, within the format of the Digital Humanities, along with my general experiences that have touched me as a person-learning of the Spanish Civil War, a desire to create art and a story, alongside my general hobbies. In this twine based choose-your-own-adventure style experience, I attempt to provide an allegorical retelling of the May Days Events, from an excerpt of George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia, similar to Orwell's own allegorical telling of …
Parkinson’S Disease And The Microbiome: Determining A Functional Link Between Microbiota Composition And Pd Pathogenesis, Emily Visiko
Parkinson’S Disease And The Microbiome: Determining A Functional Link Between Microbiota Composition And Pd Pathogenesis, Emily Visiko
Theses & ETDs
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, however, there has been difficulty in determining the pathogenesis of PD. Recent evidence has supported the hypothesis that the gut microbiota may play a causal role in PD development. This thesis presents findings from human-based and animal-based models of PD that revealed differences in the abundances of PD patients’ gut microbiota when compared to those of healthy controls. Additionally, this review discusses proposed mechanisms and pathways involved in PD pathogenesis, specifically focusing on interactions involving the gut microbiota. The mechanisms and pathways discussed include the propagation and spread of …

Nutrition Insecurity For People Experiencing Homelessness In Sarasota, Florida, Kaylee 'June' Snell
Theses & ETDs
New College of Florida is located near Newtown, one of the nine food deserts in Sarasota, Florida. Food aid is often tailored towards those in poverty with housing. People Experiencing Homelessness (PEH) have difficulties with their health which are exacerbated by barriers to nutritious food. Because of Newtown's proximity to New College, I wanted to analyze how easily food aid resources could be utilized for healthy food assistance. In particular, I wanted to see if the information available online was easy to navigate, what the requirements were to access these resources, what food was being served, how often it was …
Connection Is The Golden Thread: Writing Personal Narratives For Self-Transformation And Radical Change, Jovian Christos
Connection Is The Golden Thread: Writing Personal Narratives For Self-Transformation And Radical Change, Jovian Christos
Theses & ETDs
Connection is the Golden Thread: Personal Narratives as Self-Transformation and Radical Change examines the life-writing genre as grounds for interpersonal connection, self-revelation, and radical social change, and asks how these qualities are amplified through the anthology format. I analyze the non-fiction personal essays of Gloria Anzaldua and Audre Lorde, among other feminists, to identify rhetorical devices often found in women’s personal narrative writing and critically examine their affective qualities. I first argue that women’s personal narrative writing challenges the Western conception of selfhood as “discrete” and “individual” through a recontextualization of the self as relational. By privileging stereotypically “feminine” relational …
Flesh Doll Exploring Sex Dolls And Objectification Of The Female Body, Precious Darling
Flesh Doll Exploring Sex Dolls And Objectification Of The Female Body, Precious Darling
Theses & ETDs
As a woman, I am acutely aware of the historical and societal preconceptions that have shaped the way women experience their own sexuality. Through my art, I seek to challenge these expectations and reclaim agency over my own sexual narrative. Using sculpture, videography, and installation, I explore the physical and cultural dimensions of the female body. This is done in part by juxtaposing live, naked models with inanimate objects and materials traditionally associated with femininity and sexuality, whether busts, fabric, or blow-up dolls. Through these combinations, I aim to question and subvert conventional notions of what it means to be …

Wellbeing In Human-Dog Dyads: An Analysis Of Attachment And Communication, Katherine Abbott
Wellbeing In Human-Dog Dyads: An Analysis Of Attachment And Communication, Katherine Abbott
Theses & ETDs
People love their dogs, and past studies have clearly shown that dogs are attached to their caregivers (Palmer, 2008; Schöberl et al., 2016; Topál et al.;1998; 2005). However previous studies have also indicated that people are often poor at recognizing their dog’s body language cues (Demiurbas et al., 2016; Tami & Gallagher, 2009), thereby potentially negatively affecting their relationships with their dogs. Here we investigated the relationship of dog/human dyads by analyzing each dog’s attachment to their caretaker, and each caretaker’s ability to read their dog’s body language. To measure each dog’s attachment to their caregiver, dog/human dyads engaged in …
Age Of Initiation, Covid-19 Pandemic, And Video Game Genre Preference, Catherine Caruso
Age Of Initiation, Covid-19 Pandemic, And Video Game Genre Preference, Catherine Caruso
Theses & ETDs
Age of initiation has been a variable previously studied with social media but has yet to be studied with video games. This study examined if the age of initiation to video games affected video game genre preference. It was hypothesized that initiated genre preference and current genre preference would not be the same preference. There was also an additional question following previous research regarding the pandemic and genre preference that explored the impact of genre preference from during the pandemic to post-pandemic. Participants were around 18 to 25 years old and took a 20-item online survey that consisted of demographics, …
Elucidation Of Cell Signaling Pathways In The Drosera Capensis Prey Capture Response, Cas Setterberg
Elucidation Of Cell Signaling Pathways In The Drosera Capensis Prey Capture Response, Cas Setterberg
Theses & ETDs
Drosera is a genus of carnivorous plants commonly known as the sundews. Sundews capture insects to supplement nutrient intake in nutrient-poor environments by entrapping prey in sticky mucus secreted by specialized trichomes referred to as tentacles. They exhibit thigmonasty, non-directional movement in response to physical stimuli, in their tentacles and leaves during their prey capture process. There is evidence that carnivory in the Droseraceae evolved from existing plant defense signaling pathways. The goal of this study was to explore the potential of reactive oxygen species (ROS) being involved as signals in prey capture response; of particular interest was singlet oxygen. …
Do We Think Together When We Move Together? The Neural Underpinnings Of Interpersonal Coordination, Tatiana Pillsbury
Do We Think Together When We Move Together? The Neural Underpinnings Of Interpersonal Coordination, Tatiana Pillsbury
Theses & ETDs
Cooperation is necessary to succeed in numerous settings, including sports, business, and the creative arts. Essential to cooperation between two people is effectively coordinating motor movements. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the neural activation patterns of interpersonal coordination and its connection to task performance outcomes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the neural foundation of interpersonal coordinated movement between individuals and associated interpersonal brain synchronization (IBS) by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning techniques to measure the level of brain activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the right temporal parietal junction (rTPJ) region. …
Fantasy And Faith: Analyzing The Authentic Farmers Market Experience, Mia Sweetland
Fantasy And Faith: Analyzing The Authentic Farmers Market Experience, Mia Sweetland
Theses & ETDs
This is an analysis of the role of aesthetics within contemporary food systems and their relationship with environmental values and beliefs. I use an agrarian philosophy to examine the relationships between customers and farmers, landscape values, economic influence, non-dual value systems, and the cultural influence of design and aesthetics. I use data from semi-structured interviews, taken over a four month period. I look at the perception of morality and design in alternative and conventional food systems and environmental ethics. I argue that the connection between farmers and customers has eroded over time with industrial food systems, but farmers markets re-establish …
The Connection Between Creativity And Implicit Racial Bias, Michael Troy Mitchum
The Connection Between Creativity And Implicit Racial Bias, Michael Troy Mitchum
Theses & ETDs
In an attempt to combat racism, bias reduction programs focus on aspects of various cognitive processes to reduce implicit racial bias with only moderate effectiveness. However, no research has looked at the connection between creativity and implicit racial bias, despite their strong and inverse conceptual linkage through underlying cognitive rigidity. The current study measured creativity with the Alternate Uses Task (AUT) and implicit racial bias toward black individuals by using the Implicit Association Test (IAT). Functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to examine brain activity in frontal-parietal cortical areas associated with creative divergent thinking during the AUT and in …
Opportunistic Ospreys: A Geotemporal Systematic Review Of Osprey (Pandion Haliaetus) Use Of Nesting Structures From 1970-2020, Avery Myers
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I explore gaps in the narrative history of American osprey (Pandion haliaetus carolinensis) populations, focusing on increased human-wildlife conflicts following the recovery of the species. I conducted a systematic review of osprey literature to model the total number of occupied nests, number of occupied nests on artificial structures, and proportion of occupied nests on artificial structures in the United States from 1970 to 2020. The systematic review yielded 30 usable sources. The reported difference in proportion of nests on artificial structures before and after 1995 was -0.502 (-0.520, -0.483), indicating an increase in the use of artificial …

Aflatoxin: Global Health Impacts And Methods For Removal And Mitigation, Destin Huebner
Aflatoxin: Global Health Impacts And Methods For Removal And Mitigation, Destin Huebner
Theses & ETDs
Aflatoxin is classified as a class 1 carcinogen by the International Cancer Research Institute and is synthesized by fungi of the genus Aspergillus, but more specifically A. flavus. While being exposed to significant amounts of aflatoxin can lead to death in acute cases, long term exposure can proceed to conditions such as malnutrition, developmental delays, and immunosuppression; this is accomplished through various aflatoxin metabolites, some of which concentrate in specific parts of the body. Although it is known how aflatoxin impacts the integrity of crops, industries such as those that produce Korean rice wine remain uncertain as to how this …
Brain Connectivity And Mechanoreception In Marine Mammals, Alexis Mingos
Brain Connectivity And Mechanoreception In Marine Mammals, Alexis Mingos
Theses & ETDs
Marine mammals returned to the water through several temporally separated lineages, each species adapting somatosensory mechanisms that allow them to locate and consume food. The species in this study have adapted to underwater environments through different modalities. Manatees, harbor seals, and sea otters all utilize mystacial vibrissae, while manatees also possess lightly scattered thin vibrissae over the entire body, and sea otters employ their sensitive paws for active touch. These sensory differences provide an interesting opportunity to compare and examine the neuroanatomy of mechanoreception in differentially adapted marine species. The brain reflects these adaptations, creating “pathways” formed by neuronal connectivity, …
Investigating The Intersection Of Autism And Visual Perception: Can The Eye Contact Intimidation Factor Be Lessened In Presence Of Animated Stimuli?, Erin Niehaus
Theses & ETDs
The present study investigated the intersection between autism spectrum disorder (ASD), animated figures and eye contact. Additionally, the data collection attempted to measure differences in visual perception between autistic and allistic populations. There were a total of 14 autistic participants and 13 allistic participants. All participants were tested with eye tracking technology in the presence of animated and realistic figures. It was hypothesized that the autistic participants would view the eyes of both faces less in comparison to the allistic population. Autistic participants were predicted to be more likely to engage in eye contact with animated faces compared to realistic …

Theses & ETDs
This thesis project examines the relationship between the social–material philosophy of anarchism and the spiritual–ecological philosophy of animism in terms of their commonalities and points of disagreement, the existing state of their connections, and the possibility of their further integration. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the general traditions and perspectives of anarchist and animist philosophy, and attends to the state of their connections. Chapter 2 examines the core texts of Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed and Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, whose conversation evokes certain concepts, most notably the idea of the “property-relation,” which provide a possible foundation …
Effects Of Visitor Disturbance On The Flushing Behaviors Of American Alligators (Alligator Mississippiensis) In Myakka River State Park, Zane Cullinane Walsh
Effects Of Visitor Disturbance On The Flushing Behaviors Of American Alligators (Alligator Mississippiensis) In Myakka River State Park, Zane Cullinane Walsh
Theses & ETDs
Anthropogenic presences and influence spread into wildlife spaces and can negatively affect species living in areas that were previously less disturbed. In this thesis, a study was conducted in which the flight initiation distances and flushing behaviors of American alligators in a wild-living congregation within the Myakka River State Park Wilderness Preserve, an area within a state park in Southern Florida, were measured and analyzed. Flight initiation distances in reptiles are an important component of population risk assessment, which influences wildlife management decisions, that often goes understudied in these species. Potential negative effects of an increased human presence in wild …
Water Distribution Networks In Indonesia: A Comparative Case Analysis, Brianna Weier
Water Distribution Networks In Indonesia: A Comparative Case Analysis, Brianna Weier
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the distribution of water as an invaluable resource in the context of two case studies taking place within Indonesia. I first lay fundamental understandings of the international community’s water and sanitation prerogatives which are expanded by Elinor Ostrom’s contributions to the understanding of how and why resources are managed. The core of this thesis describes the history of water networks in Jakarta and its neighboring foil of Bali. Jakarta’s colonial history offers insights into how centuries of resource mismanagement can create a dire and almost impossibly damaged resource management system. Alternatively, Bali’s fields of rice paddy irrigation, …
Identifying Biomarkers Of Brevetoxin Exposure In The Northern Quahog Metabolome With 1h Nmr Spectroscopy, David Ponce
Identifying Biomarkers Of Brevetoxin Exposure In The Northern Quahog Metabolome With 1h Nmr Spectroscopy, David Ponce
Theses & ETDs
The northern quahog (Mercenaria mercenaria Linnaeus, 1758) is heavily valued for its ability to filter excess nutrients from marine ecosystems, and as a delicacy in the shellfish aquaculture industry. However, humans may contract Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning from consuming northern quahogs that have accumulated toxins from the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis in their tissues, and current methods of toxin analysis are notoriously slow and inefficient. This study used 1H NMR spectroscopy to identify gill metabolites that may serve as immediate biomarkers of brevetoxin exposure in afflicted northern quahogs. A total of 70 adult northern quahogs were exposed to brevetoxin PbTx-2 for 24 …

Theses & ETDs
Single-use products are detrimental to the environment due to the consequences of plastic pollution and the linear path of goods. However, Zero-waste is leading the environmental movement to denaturalize waste. Refill shops cut plastic waste at the source through reuse projects. Therefore, this pilot project operated a bulk bar on the New College of Florida campus for one month. Forty-three students completed surveys designed to assess the awareness, performance, barriers, and improvements to their Bulk Bar experience a week after the pilot concluded. The responses indicated that this service succeeded in educating college students about alternative purchase options and waste …
Diurnal Cortisol, Mood, And Hormonal Contraceptives: An Examination Of The Differences In Diurnal Cortisol Patterns And Mood Between Hormonal Contraceptive Users And Non-Users, Irene Hanabergh
Theses & ETDs
Cortisol is a steroid hormone that plays a role in the physiological response to stress. One standard pattern of cortisol change is the diurnal rhythm which peaks in the morning and declines throughout the day. Disruptions in this pattern are linked to chronic stress and poorer mental health outcomes. Previous research has found blunted cortisol responses as well as increased stress and depressive scores in hormonal contraceptive (HC) users compared to non-users. Yet little is known about the effect of HC use on average diurnal cortisol patterns. The goal of this study is to examine differences in diurnal cortisol pattern …
