Modeling The Binding Of Tetrodotoxin And Saxitoxin To The Nav1.7 Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel, Isabella G. Fiore, Smrithi Mukund, Laasya Buddharaju

Protein Modeling Reports

Approximately 1.5 billion people suffer from chronic pain, with 68 million people suffering in the U.S alone. Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists longer than 12 weeks despite medication or treatment. Within the U.S, about 5.5 million cancer patients experience chronic pain. Around 20% of these cancer pains have neuropathic origins and develop from radiation therapy. Halneuron, a new drug currently in development, seeks to provide pain relief to those suffering from chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain. This drug includes Tetrodotoxin (TTX), a potent neurotoxin found in most species of pufferfish, as its main active ingredient. Our 3D printed model …

Unpredictable Needs Are Associated With Lower Expectations Of Repayment, Jessica D. Ayers Jan 2023

Unpredictable Needs Are Associated With Lower Expectations Of Repayment, Jessica D. Ayers

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sometimes people help one another expecting to be repaid, while at other times people help without an expectation of repayment. What might underlie this difference in expectations of repayment? We investigate this question in a nationally representative sample of US adults (N = 915), and find that people are more likely to expect repayment when needs are perceived to be more predictable. We then replicate these findings in a new sample of US adults (N = 417), and show that people have higher expectations of repayment when needs are perceived to be more predictable because people assign greater …

2021 Excavations Of The Dearfield General Store And 1930s Dance Pavilion At The Dearfield Townsite And National Register Of Historic Places District, Robert H. Brunswig

Dearfield Archaeological Reports

Historical archaeology, except in cases where physical evidence is missing or destroyed, can often make significant contributions for reconstructing earlier lifestyles, economies, and social, political, and faith histories. The scientific recovery and interpretation of archaeological evidence in the form of artifacts, architecture, and human-organized spatial patterns is essential in understanding and contextualizing documentary, photographic, and memoric (e.g., oral history) evidence. In the case of the early 20th Century Dearfield townsite and its associated African American farming colony, retrieving their surviving archaeological records is both rewarding and challenging. Dearfield the townsite represents the founding seed from which the larger colony community …

Caring In Wonder: A Defense Of The Epistemic And Motivational Value Of Wonder, Tim Lin Jan 2023

Caring In Wonder: A Defense Of The Epistemic And Motivational Value Of Wonder, Tim Lin

Bouwsma Paper Contest

That wonder is somehow highly significant and essential to the human experience is an intuition many seem to share, from Socrates who claimed that the love of wisdom itself “begins in wonder” to the high aesthetic and moral value given to it by Romantics, artists, and poets across traditions. A substantial philosophical conversation has also interpreted wonder not in its colloquial sense as a curious searching for answers prompted by a gap in our understanding and thus antithetical to knowledge, but as itself a ‘way of seeing’ essentially disrupting our ‘ordinary’ experience and meanings and taking us in more direct …

The Impacts Of Role Overload And Role Conflict On Physicians' Technology Adoption, Eun Hee Park, Ghiyoung P. Im, Jing Zhang, Young Hwan Lee, Kyung Hee Chun, Young Soon Park Jan 2023

The Impacts Of Role Overload And Role Conflict On Physicians' Technology Adoption, Eun Hee Park, Ghiyoung P. Im, Jing Zhang, Young Hwan Lee, Kyung Hee Chun, Young Soon Park

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Technology adoption is an important solution for physicians to increase work efficiency, and thus deal with role conflict among their multiple job roles. Prior studies have not investigated how multiple job roles and role conflict influence physicians’ technology adoption intentions. Based on role strain theory and role identity theory, we present a model of physicians’ technology adoption intentions to support their primary (clinical care) versus secondary (teaching or research) job roles. We test the model using surveys with 156 physicians at nine medical schools in Korea. The results of our data analysis largely support our hypotheses. Role overload in each …

Planned Adaptation And Implementation Of The Community Guide Recommendations For Increasing Physical Activity In Rural Community Settings: A Qualitative Study, Julia Meredith Hess, Sally M. Davis

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this paper is to report on the implementation of an evidence-based model, VIVA, which was developed to translate physical activity (PA) recommendations to rural environments and was scaled-up to 12 rural communities across New Mexico. Our longitudinal qualitative research describes processes of planned adaptation in the rural context with an exploration of inner and outer context adaptations that consider important implementation constructs including leadership, partnership and collaboration.

MATERIALS & METHODS: An enhanced version of the RE-AIM framework was used to formulate community-level engagement and process questions essential to implementation science. Qualitative methods, using a thematic approach …

Brain Structural Differences In Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder And Its Subtypes, Theresah Boateng, Kathryn Beauchamp, Faerl Torres, Chaselyn D. Ruffaner-Hanson, John Fl Pinner, Kishore Vakamudi, Cassandra Cerros, Dina E. Hill, Julia M. Stephen Jan 2023

Brain Structural Differences In Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder And Its Subtypes, Theresah Boateng, Kathryn Beauchamp, Faerl Torres, Chaselyn D. Ruffaner-Hanson, John Fl Pinner, Kishore Vakamudi, Cassandra Cerros, Dina E. Hill, Julia M. Stephen

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

INTRODUCTION: The teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have been examined in animal models and humans. The current study extends the prior literature by quantifying differences in brain structure for individuals with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) compared to typically developing controls, as well as examining FASD subtypes. We hypothesized the FASD group would reveal smaller brain volume, reduced cortical thickness, and reduced surface area compared to controls, with the partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS)/fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) subtypes showing the largest effects and the PAE/alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) subtype revealing intermediate effects.

METHODS: The sample consisted of …

Jibu Customer Carbon Savings In Rwanda, Lauren Kelley, Lia Kraaijvanger Jan 2023

Jibu Customer Carbon Savings In Rwanda, Lauren Kelley, Lia Kraaijvanger

Miller Center Fellowship

Jibu Inc. is a social enterprise in Rwanda that addresses the essential service need for clean drinking water. The following report aims to understand Jibu’s potential for acquiring a carbon credit certification by investigating customers’ water treatment methods before becoming Jibu customers. Data was collected on Jibu customers by way of a quantitative survey that uncovered customer profiles and carbon savings. Our analysis reveals that before purchasing Jibu water, many current customers treated water at home using carbon-emitting practices such as boiling water with charcoal or gas. Jibu customers are now reducing carbon emissions since they are no longer boiling …

Liberation Through Likhá, Melanie Eng, Jules Holland

Miller Center Fellowship

Likha is a social enterprise based in the Philippines whose mission is to empower Filipino artisan families to overcome poverty by reimagining time-honored local craft for the global market. Our research endeavored to both quantify the environmental impact of Likha’s products and production processes, as well as determine Likha’s readiness for certifications such as B Corp that signal their social and environmental performance. To accomplish this, we conducted semi-structured, in-person interviews with artisans concerning their raw materials and production processes. We found that while many of Likha’s raw materials were inherently sustainable, it was a lack of formal certification and …

This collection of riddles began in Ixil as a way to share the playfulness that Ixilspeaking members of the team of authors enjoy in their language. We have paid careful attention to how language and culture work together in creating meaning and a sense of playfulness. Like all poetic and playful forms, riddles can never be the same in translation. They work because of the way that forms of the language interact with expected or unexpected cultural meanings. We have tried to choose riddles that can be understood in all three languages, but the fullest meanings are available only in …

Future Of Great Salt Lake Survey, Lisa W. Welsh, Joanna Endter-Wada, Karin M. Kettenring, Anna Mcentire

Reports

The Future of Great Salt Lake Survey was conducted in fall 2022 when state and global attention on Great Salt Lake was ramping up, following record lows of the elevation of lake water levels. In the survey, we asked Utahns their opinions on securing water for Great Salt Lake and focused on strategies that individuals, local communities, and the state of Utah could pursue. When it comes to how water is used and managed in Utah, there are multiple actors and institutions who all make decisions and have authority or ability to take different actions. While the state of …

Archival Enterprise Across Early Modern Europe: A Review Essay, Kristen J. Nyitray Jan 2023

Archival Enterprise Across Early Modern Europe: A Review Essay, Kristen J. Nyitray

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In the early modern era, archives were a conduit for information transfer across Europe. Historians have increasingly centered archives and archivists as actors in scholarship of Early Modern European (c. 1450-1800) historical concerns. In particular, two linked areas of inquiry have been emphasized: the impact of archives on forming European identities, and the influence of European archivists on shaping archives. Studies of archives are rich sources that tease out ideological shifts in early modern times. This essay discusses recent literature and seminal writings contributing to understandings of emergent archives and archival practices across Early Modern Europe. Exploring the concept of …

The Healthcare Experiences Of African Americans With A Dual Diagnosis Of Hiv/Aids And A Nutrition-Related Chronic Disease: A Pilot Study, Meena Mahadevan, Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha, Valerie Kwong Jan 2023

The Healthcare Experiences Of African Americans With A Dual Diagnosis Of Hiv/Aids And A Nutrition-Related Chronic Disease: A Pilot Study, Meena Mahadevan, Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha, Valerie Kwong

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

For HIV-positive African Americans, the mistrust of medical providers due to anticipation of unequal treatment care, prejudice, and bias can become a major deterrent to medication and treatment adherence. Although programs and services incorporate strategies to improve patient–provider relationships, a deeper understanding of their healthcare experiences, especially among those with a dual diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and a nutrition-related chronic disease, is lacking. This qualitative study aimed to address this gap by conducting focus groups with participants who identified themselves as being African American, and having a dual diagnosis of HIV/AIDS, and a chronic disease. Content analysis generated several major themes, …

Radiation Oncology Articles

Gene therapy manipulates or modifies a gene that provides a new cellular function to treat or correct a pathological condition, such as cancer. The approach of using gene manipulation to modify patient's cells to improve cancer therapy and potentially find a cure is gaining popularity. Currently, there are 12 gene therapy products approved by US-FDA, EMA and CFDA for cancer management, these include Rexin-G, Gendicine, Oncorine, Provange among other. The Radiation Biology Research group at Henry Ford Health has been actively developing gene therapy approaches for improving clinical outcome in cancer patients. The team was the first to test a …

Lumbar Specialization And The Evolution Of Swimming Modes In Cetaceans, Caedmon Morgret, Ryan Bebej Jan 2023

Lumbar Specialization And The Evolution Of Swimming Modes In Cetaceans, Caedmon Morgret, Ryan Bebej

Summer Research

Locomotion describes how an animal moves through its environment. The driving force behind locomotion in cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) is the vertebral column and its associated muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Lumbar vertebrae represent one of several vertebral regions in the column (Fig. 1) that dictate cetacean swimming mode1 . Ancient cetaceans had four limbs and were able to move around on land, with swimming capabilities similar to modern terrestrial/semiaquatic mammals2 . Over time, as cetaceans became more aquatic, they transitioned from using limb-dominated swimming to taildominated swimming, which required drastic functional changes in the lumbar region. Prior work demonstrates …
