Recent expansion of microbiome research has uncovered connections between resident microbial communities and blood parasite risk, establishing the potential for microbial disease treatments such as probiotics in the future. However, this field has largely focused on humans and model organisms, leaving much unknown about how microbial communities might directly or indirectly impact parasite infection in wild populations and non-mammals. To contribute to this knowledge base in wild birds, we collected fecal and blood samples from wild Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus) in the United States to test for associations between blood parasite infection and the gut microbiome. We used a …

Recent Advances In Whiskey Analysis For Authentication, Discrimination, And Quality Control, Chioke A. Okolo, Kieran N. Kilcawley, Christine O'Connor

Articles

In order to safeguard authentic whiskey products from fraudulent or counterfeit practices, high throughput solutions that provide robust, rapid, and reliable solutions are required. The implementation of some analytical strategies is quite challenging or costly in routine analysis. Qualitative screening of whiskey products has been explored, but due to the nonspecificity of the chemical compounds, a more quantitative confirmatory technique is required to validate the result of the whiskey analysis. Hence, combining analytical and chemometric methods has been fundamental in whiskey sample differentiation and classification. A comprehensive update on the most relevant and current analytical techniques, including spectroscopic, chromatographic, and …

Throughout history, life narratives have fueled and supported social movements through testimony and counter-narrative on the part of the author (Schaffer & Smith, 2004) and narrative empathy on the part of the reader (Keen, 2006). Narrative empathy invests individuals in a cause, and can serve as the basis for readers’ later involvement in social movements (Keen, 2006). These concepts of life narrative form an interesting connection with comics theory, which suggests that the form engages readers in unique ways through character identification, subjective reading, and closure. In connecting these ideas, this study explores how the medium of comics can be …

Overexpression Of Abcc1 And Abcg2 Confers Resistance To Bmn-673, A Poly (Adp-Ribose) Polymerase (Parp) Inhibitors, Qiuxu Teng

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer remains a growing public health challenge worldwide. Although the development of chemotherapies has effectively reduced the cancer death rate and improved patients’ prognosis, the frequent occurrence of multi-drug resistance (MDR) in cancer has caused impairments on the efficacy of many structure-unrelated anticancer agents, leading to treatment failure and recurrence. One of the most common causes of MDR is the overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters on cancer cell membranes, which transport anticancer drugs out of cancer cells, thereby reducing the intracellular drug concentration. BMN-673 (talazoparib) is a potent poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor that is approved for BRCA-mutated HER2-negative …

Gating And Pathogenic Mechanism Of Polycystin Ion Channels, Yan Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), one of the most common and life-threatening human genetic diseases, is caused by mutations in PKD1 or PKD2 genes. PKD1 gene encodes PKD1 (also known as polycystin-1 or PC1) protein, which are the founding members of the PKD1 proteins family; while PKD2 encodes TRPP2 (also known as polycystin-2 or PC2) protein, the founding member of the TRPP subfamily. PKD1 family consists of PKD1, PKD1L1, PKD1L2, PKD1L3, and PKDREJ. Whereas the TRPP subfamily includes: TRPP2, TRPP3, and TRPP5. Proteins in PKD1 and TRPP families are collectively called polycystins. TRPP proteins can either form homotetrameric ion …

Mancozeb Exposure Results In Oxidative Stress And Disruption Of Mitochondrial Complexes Iii & Iv In Transformed Human Colon Cells, Amanda Dhaneshwar

Theses and Dissertations

The ethylene bisdithiocarbamate pesticides, a subclass of the dithiocarbamate pesticides, are broad spectrum organometallic fungicides used on a variety of crops. The fungicide Mancozeb is comprised of an ethylene bisdithiocarbamate backbone complexed to the metals manganese and zinc. Ingestion of food containing pesticide residue and occupational exposure are common routes of Mancozeb exposure. Previous work demonstrated that Mancozeb exposure to HT-29 colon cancer cells resulted in cytotoxicity, apoptosis, and disruption of mitochondrial complex I, II, and V activity. The current study investigated the effect of Mancozeb exposure on mitochondrial complex III and IV activity and oxidative stress parameters in the …

Measurement Of Desmosine By Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Its Application To Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Michael Fagiola Jan 2023

Measurement Of Desmosine By Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry And Its Application To Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Michael Fagiola

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanical properties of lung elastic fibers are derived from the specialized features of their core elastin protein, which contains distensible, coiled peptides that store the energy needed to expel air from the lungs. Elastin crosslinks provide structural support for the fibers and play an important role in determining the morphologic features of the lung. Degradation of elastic fibers in lung disease is associated with the release of desmosine, a unique amino acid that can be readily identified and quantified in body fluids and solid tissue using LC–MS-MS. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of desmosine …

Theses and Dissertations

Animal studies is a growing field in the Humanities and, in particular, Literature studies. This dissertation, The Unstoppable Anthropocene Engine, focuses on canonical literature of the fin de siècle and Modernist eras that utilize animals in their narratives. Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles, H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, and Djuna Barnes’ Nightwood are the literary texts examined throughout the dissertation to discuss the importance of looking at specific animals that represent particular groups. Through these novels and poem, readers will see that when we …

The Monsters And Their Racial Identities In Frankenstein And The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, Sara N. Rodia Jan 2023

The Monsters And Their Racial Identities In Frankenstein And The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde, Sara N. Rodia

Theses and Dissertations

By examining the monsters through a racial lens in Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, this thesis aims to show how the creature and Hyde can be reflective of the racial stereotypes in Britain in the 19th century. This thesis maps out how the monsters in the novels embody nonwhite races and how the narrative can either keep them in the category of monster, or humanize them. The creature represents nonwhite races, and Shelley critiques racist ideologies of the early 19th century through the creature’s narration in the novel. Further, Shelley demonstrates the monstrous nature …

Gender, Sex, And The Body In Medieval Armenia, Ashley Bozian Jan 2023

Gender, Sex, And The Body In Medieval Armenia, Ashley Bozian

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates textual representation of the body, gender, and sexuality in Armenian chronicles produced between the fifth and eleventh centuries CE. In so doing, it reconstructs the development of Armenian somatology between Zoroastrian and Islamic suzerainties. Specifically, the dissertation examines the modalities by which the body functioned to medieval Armenian cognition as the locus of identity and alterity through the deployment of such devices as the following, to each of which is devoted a chapter: masculinity, femininity, archetypes of sexual morality, legislation of sexual conduct, sexual experientiality (in both temporal and eschatological dimensions), anatomy, and violence. As such, the …

Environmental Surveillance For Blacklegged Ticks (Ixodes Scapularis) Across An Urban-Rural Gradient In West Michigan, William L. Miller, Sophia M. Bieri, An Vu, Audrey Luce, Erica Boldenow, Meghan May, Jean Tsao

Summer Research

The blacklegged tick is an emerging species of ticks (Family: Ixodidae) in Michigan and is the primary vector for Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. The range of the blacklegged tick has increased in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan over the past 20 years, expanding northward along the lakeshore and inland in southern portions of the state. The number of human cases has increased 5-fold over the same timeframe, facilitated by the expansion of blacklegged tick populations.

Faculty Research 2023

Cattle are among the most important domesticated bovid species in the world, of which Ethiopia possesses large populations adapted to different agro-ecologies and production systems. Though several molecular population genetic studies have been done on Ethiopian indigenous cattle, genomic diversity and selection signatures pertinent to adaptation to the different local environments have yet to be comprehensively characterized. Here, the whole genome sequences of 151 samples from 14 Ethiopian indigenous cattle populations were analyzed to assess genomic diversity and differentiation as well as signatures of positive selection (using Hp, iHS, FST, and XP-CLR) in comparison to Sudanese zebu, Asian zebu, Ankole, …

Faculty Research 2023

The molecular mechanisms underlying the acquisition of addiction/dependence on morphine may result from the ability of the opioid to diminish the transport of L-cysteine into neurons via inhibition of excitatory amino acid transporter 3 (EAA3). The objective of this study was to determine whether the co-administration of the cell-penetrant L-thiol ester, L-cysteine ethyl ester (L-CYSee), would reduce physical dependence on morphine in male Sprague Dawley rats. Injection of the opioid-receptor antagonist, naloxone HCl (NLX; 1.5 mg/kg, IP), elicited pronounced withdrawal phenomena in rats which received a subcutaneous depot of morphine (150 mg/kg) for 36 h and were receiving a continuous …

Cortical Demyelination And Depression-Like Behavior Are Associated With Histaminergic Dysregulation In A Mouse Model Of Peripheral Inflammation, Danielle Germundson-Hermanson

Biomedical Sciences Posters and Presentations

▪ Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system are increasing in prevalence world-wide1,2 and manifest as motor, behavioral, and/or cognitive defects3 . The etiology and pathophysiology of demyelinating diseases remain unclear.

▪ We have previously observed cortical demyelination in our mouse model of non-anaphylactic cow’s milk allergy4 . The demyelination was associated with depression-like behaviors and region-specific increases in brain histamine and H3 receptor (H3R) levels4,5 .

❖ The brain’s central histaminergic system is tightly controlled and regulates many behaviors. Additionally, signaling through H3R plays a crucial role in oligodendrocyte differentiation, and thus, demyelination and remyelination6 .

▪ We hypothesized …

Accent Services: Considering The Perspectives Of Non-Native Speakers Of English For A Culturally Affirming Practice, Kristopher Kilgallon

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Accent “modification” is a type of service offered by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) that is intended to, among other things, help speakers improve their intelligibility in a target second language. This area of practice has been, and continues to be, a controversial topic amongst scholars and practitioners. To explore and understand the perspectives of non-native speakers of English regarding their participation in accent services, the present study employed a qualitative research design using individual, semi-structured interviews. Ten adult non-native speakers of English (female: n = 7; male: n = 3), with ages between 28 and 47 years old (M = …

No. 58: Wild Foods, The Nutrition Transition And Urban Food Security In Northern Namibia, Ndeyapo Nickanor, Lawrence Kazembe, Jonathan Crush

Hungry Cities Partnership

Rapid urbanization and food system transformation in Africa have been accompanied by growing food insecurity, reduced dietary diversity and an epidemic of non-communicable disease. While the contribution of wild and indigenous foods (WIF) to the quality of rural household diets has been of longstanding attention, research on their consumption and role amongst urban households is much more recent. This paper focuses on the consumption of WIF in three towns in northern Namibia with close ties to the surrounding rural agricultural areas. Based on data from a household survey of food sourcing and consumption patterns in 2018, the paper shows that …

(How) Is Prison Philosophy Public?, Shannon Fyfe, Amy Mckiernan, Elizabeth Lanphier

Scholarly Articles

In this essay we reflect on our shared experiences participating in a prison philosophy program, to consider just how our philosophical activities inside prison, and our related work outside, were—or were not—“public.” Some may also wonder if all the activities we describe are instances of “philosophy.” We take it that they are, insofar as they all engage teaching or reflecting on philosophy, deploying philosophical skills (including critical thinking, writing, and argumentation), or rely on philosophical concepts, including from feminist and critical race theory and praxis. However, we also suggest ways in which this work highlights the need to further refine …

Prenatal Buprenorphine Exposure Reduces Expression Of Myelin Proteins In Neonatal Longs-Evans Rat, Christopher James Grahe Jan 2023

Prenatal Buprenorphine Exposure Reduces Expression Of Myelin Proteins In Neonatal Longs-Evans Rat, Christopher James Grahe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In the USA and especially in WV, there has been a surge in the rise of opioid use disorder (OUD), and with it a rise in neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). What makes this rise in NAS so unfortunate is that the Medications for OUD (MOUD) do not prevent the development of NAS. Although the relationship between MOUD and NAS is still unclear, it is thought that buprenorphine, one of the main substances used to treat OUD in pregnant women, may feed into the development of NAS, which may affect mental and physiological development and cause other health problems. Via understanding …

An Important New Study Of Freemasonry And The Latter-Day Saints: What's Good, What's Questionable, And What's Missing In Method Infinte, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw Jan 2023

An Important New Study Of Freemasonry And The Latter-Day Saints: What's Good, What's Questionable, And What's Missing In Method Infinte, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

There is much to celebrate in this important new study of Freemasonry and the Latter-day Saints. To their credit, the authors have succeeded in creating a work that is richer than earlier studies of the subject, probing many previously unexplored hints of Masonic influence on Latter- day Saint life and thought from the beginning of the Restoration through the end of the nineteenth century. That said, the book’s dauntingly broad survey suffers from uneven quality on some of the many topics it ambitiously tackles. While recognizing the study’s considerable merits, its shortcomings must also be considered. For this reason, I’ve …

Nephi’S Eight Years In The “Wilderness”: Reconsidering Definitions And Details, Godfrey J. Ellis Jan 2023

Nephi’S Eight Years In The “Wilderness”: Reconsidering Definitions And Details, Godfrey J. Ellis

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

A traditional reading of Nephi’s chronicle of the trek through Arabia relies heavily on two verses in 1 Nephi 17. In verse 4, Nephi states that they “did sojourn for the space of many years, yea, even eight years in the wilderness.” In verse 5, he reports that “we did come to the land which we called Bountiful.” The almost universal interpretation of these verses is that of sequential events: eight years traversing the arid desert of Western Arabia following which the Lehites entered the lush Bountiful for an unspecified time to build the ship. A question with the traditional …

The Mystery Of The Missing Megafauna, Maggie Colangelo, Bernard Means Jan 2023

The Mystery Of The Missing Megafauna, Maggie Colangelo, Bernard Means

Virtual Curation Lab's Comic Publications

The creative team behind Founding Monsters and Founding Monsters Tales have created a new comic that takes a more scientific and less historic approach to the giant mammals that once roamed North America. The Mystery of the Missing Megafauna explores how changing climate impacted biodiversity and megafauna populations in North America at the end of the last Ice Age. Particular attention is placed on the extinction of mastodons, mammoths, giant ground sloths and other megafauna whose fossils are found at Saltville in southwestern Virginia. This comic draws a connection to contemporary climate change and the major extinctions happening today. The …
